WELCOME TO FLANDERS FIELDS. THE FIRST CANADIAN BATTLE OF THE GREAT WAR: YPRES, 1915., Dancocks, Daniel G.
41 Dancocks, Daniel G. WELCOME TO FLANDERS FIELDS. THE FIRST CANADIAN BATTLE OF THE GREAT WAR: YPRES, 1915.

292 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Map endpapers, b&w photographs. "The second battle of Ypres provided the First Canadian Division with its baptism of fire, and it could not have been worse. They were holding a salient, jutting out so that they were targets from three sides. The Germans, for the first time ever, used chlorine gas, which turned the Canadians' bayonets green and destroyed their lungs. Then they discovered that in combat conditions their Ross rifles jammed, as the waves of Germans hit their trenches. At the end John McCrae looked across the battleground where so many hundreds of his countrymen had fallen, and wrote 'In Flanders Fields'. Back in Canada, the war began in earnest the day the casualty lists were posted. " Small notation, place, date and initials in ink on half-title page; light wrinkling at bottom of spine; small bump at bottom corner of boards; slight waviness to edges of text block. Dust jacket has light wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing, faint line indentation on front panel.

48 pp, oblong (8 1/4" H x 11" D), stapled in wraps. B&w and color photographs, b&w drawings. "(The Luftwaffe looked) into the possibility of producing inexpensive aircraft which, however, would have enough power to quickly engage the enemy formations. Consequently, the machines which were created were predominantly made of wood, a raw material not important to the war effort. Assembly and construction were kept as simple as possible. In this way these machines could be completed without affecting the already overloaded industry. The rocket motor was a natural choice for a power plant due to its high performance. The take-off and landing procedures were kept simple to avoid long training periods for pilots. Take-off was accomplished via a tow or the vertical take-off. Landing was made on skids or the fighter abandoned and the pilot and important components (e.g. motor, weapons systems) recovered by parachute. What follows is the history of t he development of these technically highly-interesting aircraft." Inside - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor wear at top/bottom of spine.

THROUGH GERMAN EYES: THE BRITISH AND THE SOMME 1916., Duffy, Christopher.
48 Duffy, Christopher. THROUGH GERMAN EYES: THE BRITISH AND THE SOMME 1916.
London Weidenfeld & Nicolson 2006 0297846892 / 9780297846895 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
383 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, maps, drawings. ""The Battle of the Somme has an enduring legacy, the image of 'lions led by donkeys' established by Alan Clark; of brave British soldiers sent to their deaths by incompetent generals. but, as Duffy reveals in this groundbreaking study, this was never the German view; indeed, the Germans had great respect for the British forces. The evidence for this is both copious and unfamiliar, discovered in archived official papers, histories, memoirs and letters, and most revealingly of all in the results of the interrogation of British prisoners of war. The picture that emerges is a far cry from 'Blackadder'. The questioning by German intelligence officers was more systematic and detailed than that employed by their British counterparts. It was also more open-ended, encouraging those captured to speak freely and at length whilst still in shock from combat and capture. Their recollections are of unique interest because of their immediacy, separated from the event by a matter of hours or a few days at most, rather than being contaminated by the passing of time and outside opinion. This is not another of the number of comprehensive histories of the Battle of the Somme. Instead it looks at aspects of the battle from the German point of view, showing in particular the Germans' perception of the British performance and mentality in the course of that long struggle. From the German point of view, the battle was a disaster. And the fact that every British soldier taken prisoner still believed Britian would win the war gave German intelligence teams a fair indication that their empire would go down to defeat." Minor cigarette odor, very light browning to edges of textblock, faint thumb print at fore-edge of free front endpaper. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of spine.

SILVER CENTRE (THE STORY OF AN ONTARIO MINING CAMP)., Fancy, Peter.
52 Fancy, Peter. SILVER CENTRE (THE STORY OF AN ONTARIO MINING CAMP).
Cobalt, Ontario Highway Book Shop 1985 0889543062 / 9780889543065 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good Signed by Author
145 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps, diagrams. SIGNED BY AUTHOR ON TITLE PAGE. "Silver Centre was one of Canada's celebrated mining camps. It discovered millions of dollars in silver ore (when silver's price averaged 50 cents an ounce) and probably has as much mineral wealth today in its unexamined Keewatin ground for some future economic development. But most importantly, in terms of Ontario's social history , this Silver Centre story represents the way of life for many of the people living in northern Ontario during the early years of (the twenieth) century. The story follows in detail the mining prospectors of 1907 - their silver discoveries; the early mines - their success and failures; the depressing World War I years; then rebirth with the mother lode discovery in 1920 and its climactic decade of phenomenal silver treasure; finally, the inevitable exhaustion of known deposits. Falling metal prices discourage continued searches. Mines close - sudden abandonment. This particular drama of prospectors and developers struggling with the Precambrian rocks is a constant, unifying theme. (This) is the story of a mining community and its people, of fellowship and stubborn pleasure." Very light edge wear, previous owner's name/date in ink on free front endpaper and embossed blind stamp on half-title page. A previous owner has amended the map of Silver Centre, 1924, adding the location of two rinks and a ball park, extending the left side of the map to show the rail yard, railway station and loading ramp, and filling in some squares indicating the location of buildings with red ink. Very light browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has a few small tears (archivally taped) and chips; moderate wrinkling along top edge; light browning - moderate on spine; light soiling and rubbing; small light stain, partial cup mark on front panel; small area of tiny perforations on rear panel; book color offset on inside surface; now in a mylar sleeve.

195 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w photographs, maps. "(The) first Battle of Ypres (1914) is sometimes considered to have ended as a costly stalemate, but, in fact, the British Army's act of suicide in this battle resulted in victory; the Germans, in failing a breakthrough to Calais, lost forever any prospects of the outright victory they had expected to win in France. Brigadier Farrar-Hockely's skillful account of this decisive encounter, which includes a brilliant use of contemporary sources, not least among them the dramatic diaries of British soldiers, caused the 'Oxford Times' to comment: 'his book is not only a fine piece of military history; it is as exciting as a thriller'." San Francisco Harper & Row 1980 0062503405 / 9780062503404 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good - Lorinda Bryan Cauley.
315 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w drawings, maps. "A complete, illustrated guide to the themes, characters, and events of C.S. Lewis's imaginary world." "Beginning anywhere - with a character, an object, an overview, a theme - readers can pursue a thread of inquiry as far as they wish with this simple-to-use, comprehensive system of cross-references. No matter how familiar you may be with the saga of Narnia, this magical 'Companion' will lead you to a fuller understanding and appreciation of the treasures - hidden as well as overt - enriching these now-classic tales. Paul Ford brings careful scholarship and contagious enthusiasm to his research. He examines classical, scriptural, and literary references; unearths the origins of crucial terms and concepts; and provides insight into the symbolic and thematic threads that amplify and unify the series. Ford is also able to shed light on the influence of events in C.S. Lewis's life upon the composition of the 'Chronicles' - for example, the curious matter of the 'disappearance' of the Dark Island in the differing British and American editions of 'Voyage of the Dawn Treader'. The thoughtful, informative, lively entries invite casual perusal while affording the serious student a refreshing and satisfying key to what has been termed 'the allusive subtext' of the seven books - that valuable substrata of psychological, philosophical, and spiritual ideas that inform and enhance these stories." Very small stain on fore-edge of text block, small bump at top edge of spine, very small remainder mark (red star) and very tiny dent on bottom of text block. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has edge wear at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds - very light edge wear elsewhere, one very small edge tear with crease, protected in a paper-backed mylar sleeve.
