41 Dubro, James. MOB MISTRESS,
Toronto Macmillan of Canada 1988 077159917X / 9780771599170 First Edition Very Good Very Good
200 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w photographs. "(Shirley Ryce) tells of her upbringing as the spoiled daughter of a local bookie and card-game organizer, of her early marriage, and of the fateful meeting that turned a bored housewife and mother into a mob mistress. (She) moved in organized crime circles for almost two decades, and had many mob affairs. Although she knew little of the mobsters' 'business', she saw a great deal of the mob at play. Her break with the Papalias (Hamilton, Ontario crime family) and their cohorts, and her co-operation with the police, marked a dramatic change in ther life, and in 'Mob Mistress' she looks back at who and what she was with self-deprecating frankness. At the same time, she and Dubro both give an informed and clear-eyed view of her former 'playmates' - and of the law-enforcement officers who fight them daily." Small bump to bottom corner of both boards. Dust jacket has minor edge wear, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, small corner crease on front flap, very light rubbing.

Bloodlist - 200 pp, 1990 1st printing, ISBN 0441067956 - "I've always had a weak spot for strange ladies. One very beautiful girl had even warned me that she was - get this - a vampire. But did I listen? No. Well, before you know it, I'm being chased by an ugly thug with a gun, and a bullet blasts its way through my back, and - believe it or not - nothing happened. I survived! How? You guessed it. I, Jack Fleming, ace reporter, had been transformed into - a vampire! Which has its advantages. You never die, you never grow old, you sleep all day, and best of all - you can hunt down your own murderer." Book 2. Lifeblood - 202 pp, 1990 5th printing, ISBN 0441847765 - "As nosferatu go, I'm basically a nice guy. Sure, I need a little blood now and then, but I never meant to hurt anyone. Too bad some people don't feel the same about me. Now I've got a bunch of crazy vampire-hunters on my trail, armed with crosses, silver bullets, and sharp wooden stakes. How did they find out about me? Why are they - pardon the expression - out for my blood? I don't know, but I'm going to get some answers even if it kills me - again." Book 3. Bloodcircle - 202 pp, 1990 6th printing, ISBN 0441067174 - "As a vampire, I have a number of handy skills - I can hypnotize mortals, walk through walls, and shrug off bullets like insults. The one thing I haven't been able to manage, so far, is to find the woman who made me what I am. Until now. Her trail has led me to the palatial estate of a wealthy widow - and a two hundred-year-old gigolo with a taste for young blood. He claims not to know where my long-lost lady is - or who is trying to kill me - but then again, you can never trust a vampire." Book 4. Art in the Blood - 195 pp, 1991 1st printing, ISBN 0441859453 - "(W)hen the career of a talented young artist is fatally cut short, I know I won't sleep easy in my coffin until I find the killer. But the world of high art - with its big money, bigger egos, and expensive forgeries - makes even bloodsucking seem simple. And safer. Dead artists can live forever. An undead detective may not be so lucky - ." Book 5. Fire in theBlood - 198 pp, 1991 3rd printing, ISBN 0441859451 - "Even the dead have to work for a living. This time, a priceless heirloom bracelet's been stolen from the wealthy Sebastian Pierece. And guess who's been hired to find it? Pierce has plenty of hard cash, a soft heart - and a hot-blooded daughter named Marian. Marian has big eyes for yours truly - and a very jealous boyfriend. And me? I have a night job I can really sink my teeth into." Book 6. Blood on the Water - 199 pp, 1992 2nd printing, ISBN 044185947X - "There's a new crime boss in town and he's gunning for a vampire. So are the police. Lucky me. What's worse, my thirst for the red stuff is getting out of control. I'm not sure what scares me mroe: the mob - or the darkness gnawing at my gut. When Chicago gets this hot, even a vampire can get burned." Book 7. A Chill in the Blood - 327 pp, 1999 1st PB printing, ISBN 0441006272 - "(B)eing a vampire with morals is no midnight stroll on the streets of post-prohibition Chicago. In the city of sin, the gangs still rule - and they're on the brink of an all-out war. Neither crooks nor cops care how much blood, innocent or otherwise, flows during the fight. But Jack does. Caught between the local hoods and the boys from New York, Jack has to stop the battle before it starts. But how much of his remaining humanity will he have to give up to do it?" Book 9. Lady Crymsyn - 410 pp, 2001 1st PB printing, ISBN 0441008739 - "(Jack) has made a good bit of money cleaning up the streets of post-prohibition Chicago - enough to realize his long-time dream of owning a nightclub where a man can get a legal drink, and where Jack's songbird girlfriend can headline the floor show. But renovations on the speakeasy come to a crashing halt when workmen discover the skeletal remains of a woman's body - clad in a distinctive red dress - walled up in the basement. Jack may have become a creature of the night, but he's still a man with a strong sense of justice. And he won't rest until he finds out who killed the lady in red - even if it means resurrecting secrets the mob would kill to keep buried." Plus: Quincey Morris, Vampire - 336 pp, Baen Publishing 2001 first printing, ISBN 0671319844 - "Rough and ready Texan Quincey Morris thrust his Bowie knife into Dracula's heart, bringing an end to the quintessential battle between the living and the Un-Dead. It also brought an end to Quincey as he bled his life away into the chill earth of Transylvania. Or so he thought. Waking to the night, surrounded by ravenous wolves, he finds himself plunged into his greates adventure yet: life beyond life - as a vampire. To survive, he must quickly adapt to his dark change. At the hands of his savage mentor it's a hard, painful process, but Quincey is determined to escape the wilderness and return to his grieving friends. 50 Gagnon, Georgette and Rath, Dan. NOT WITHOUT CAUSE: DAVID PETERSON'S FALL FROM GRACE.
Toronto HarperCollins 1991 0002158426 / 9780002158428 First Edition Very Good+ Very Good+
408 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "The stunning defeat of David Peterson's powerful Liberal government on September 6, 1990 broke many of the old rules for Canadian elections - and provided the first glimpse of how future elections will be fought. At the center of the story: Liberal leader David Peterson. Young, handsome and rich, he embodied the glory years of the 1980s when Yuppies, BMWs and image politics ruled. His decision to 'go early', to call an election only three years into his mandate, set the wheels in motion. His campaign attracts some of Canada's leading political players: campaign chair Kathy Robinson, whose pivotal position becomes a hotseat as the Liberal slide begins; former Trudeau pollster Martin Goldfarb, anxious to keep a Liberal government in power; David MacNaughton, Goldfarb critic and rival; Bob Nixon, the tough and respected treasurer faced with scuttling his balanced budget in a last-ditch vote-buying attempt; aide Vince Borg, Peterson's long-time friend, who tries to protect the premier from protesters and Liberals alike. These key players and an army of policy experts, strategists, party members, candidates and reporters tangle and clash in the race for power. (The) gripping account of how the Peterson Liberals did not anticipate or prepare for the new trends emerging in Canada's electoral process: the increasing power of special-interest groups, campaign strategies that attack incumbents without offering alternatives, negative advertising, the critical importance of perceptions and the media, an electorate with declining party allegiances and the rise of non-traditional parties. It's also the reavealing tale of how Ontario's New Democratic and Progressive Conservative parties ran campaigns that became a perfect match for the volatile mood of voters." Remainder mark on bottom of text block at spine. Dust jacket has very minor wrinkling at top of spine.

311 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w illustrations. "October 17, 1898, en route to Paris's Gare du Nord station, the Dowager Duchess of Sutherland's jewels were stolen from her train carriage. More than forty pieces, worth nearly 2 million Pounds today, disappeared that night, and the perpetrator along with them. It would become one of the most widely reported heists of the late Victorian era, but what no one knew was that the man who committed this most daring and well-planned theft had already committed nine almost identical crimes. A man who wore bespoke suits and handmade shoes; who used a dozen pseudonyms to dust over his tracks; who belonged to three smart London clubs and lived in the luxury of West End hotels; whose staple diet was champagne and whisky; who was pursued by London's top detectives for five and a half years and - by their own admission - proved smarter than them. A man who fell so much in love with a woman that he would steal and lie for her, only to be betrayed by her." Book is slightly cocked. Dust jacket has some areas of very light edge wrinkling.

223 pp, 11 1/4" H. Map endpapers. "Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer had been in Tibet for seven years when his time in Lhasa came to a swift end. As he fled (from the 1950 Chinese invasion), he brought with him negatives of the pictures he had been taking with left-behind film and borrowed cameras, pictures documenting life in Lhasa, candid images of the people who had made him almost one of their own. His 'Seven Years in Tibet', which has sold three million copies since its publication in 1953, is illustrated with only a few of these photographs. (This book) presents 200 of Harrer's extraordinary images, capturing the luminous, exotic world of Tibet before the invasion. With an intimacy and understanding that only he could impart, the photographs give us a last glimpse of life in and around Lhasa, Tibet's capital city and the locus to which all Tibet gravitated. Arranged thematically and energized by Harrer's detail-rich commentary, these pages are a powerful and moving resurrection of life in Lhasa - from Buddhist ceremonies to family celebrations, from outings in the countryside to men's and women's games of chance, from spirited athletic contests to the sad flight of Harrer's avid pupil, the eighteen-year-old Dalai Lama." Small shalloe dent on fron board. Dust jacket has rubbing on panels (no colour loss), slight colour fading at top of front panel near hinge, heavy colour fading on spine from red to light blue, light fading to colour on hinges, small dent on front panel, minor edge wrinkling.

57 Hempel, Sandra. THE INHERITOR'S POWDER: A TALE OF ARSENIC, MURDER, AND THE NEW FORENSIC SCIENCE.
New York W.W. Norton 2013 0393239713 / 9780393239713 First American Edition Very Good Very Good
278 pp, 9 1/2" H. "In the first half of the nineteenth century, an epidemic swept Europe: arsenic poisoning. Available at any corner shop for a few pence, arsenic was so frequently used by potential beneficiaries of wills that it was nicknamed 'the inheritor's powder'. But it was difficult to prove that a victim had been poisoned, let alone to identify the contaminated food or drink since arsenic was tasteless. Then came a riveting case. (When, after three days of agony) wealthy George Bodle died, (he left) behind several heirs, including a son and grandson - both of whom were not on the best of terms with the family patriarch. The investigation brought together a colorful cast of characters: bickering relatives; a drunken, bumbling policeman; and James Marsh, an unknown but brilliant chemist who, assigned the Bodle case, attempted to create a test that could accurately pinpoint the presence of arsenic. In doing so, however, he would cause as many problems as he solved. Were innocent men and women now going to the gallows? And would George Bodle's killer be found? Incisive and wryly entertaining, science writer Sandra Hempel brings to life a gripping story of domestic infighting, wayward police behavior, a slice of Victorian history, stories of poisonings, and an unforgettable foray into the origins of forensic science." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, small bump at top of rear hinge. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at bottom of spine, very small bump at top of rear hinge.

58 Hennessey, Thomas. A HISTORY OF NORTHERN IRELAND, 1920-1996.
New York St. Martin's Press 1997 0312211120 / 9780312211127 Very Good+ Very Good
347 pp, 8vo (8 13/16" H). Book club edition. "Founded upon the partition of Ireland in 1920, Northern Ireland experienced fifty years of nervous peace under the rule of a devolved government in Belfast. This government was representative only of the majority Protestant unionist community while the Catholic minority sought union with the rest of the island. The Protestant fortress held firm until the emergence of the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Movement in the late 1960s, following which the province subsided into the civil unrest widely known as 'the Troubles'. Hennessey's even-handed history attempts to understand the reasons for the long history of communal division, mutual suspicion, Catholic alienation, and Protestant siege mentality. It traces the sequence of events, decade by decade, in the history of the troubled province. The great value of the book, however, is in providing an overview of events since the outbreak of the Troubles up to and including the present uncertain peace process. It is the first comprehensive history of Northern Ireland for over fifteen years and brings a contemporary perspective to historical events, taking account of the scholarship which has developed in Northern Ireland studies over the last twenty years." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor rubbing, very light edge wrinkling.
