FIGHTER SQUADRON AT GUADALCANAL., Brand, Max.
43 Brand, Max. FIGHTER SQUADRON AT GUADALCANAL.
Naval Institute Press, Annapolis, 1996.
231 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1557500886 B&w photographs, maps. "(A)fter more than fifty years and a string of fortunate coincidences, Brand's stirring account of the 212th Marine Fighter Squadron's operations at Guadalc anal in 1942 has been set in print. Once of the very first examples of oral history, this treasure trove of personal and historical detail was the result of hundreds of hours of interviews with the pilots and ground crew of the 212th, as wel l a s w i th Marine infantrymen and Navy personnel, conducted soon after the events took place. Stories of thrilling, yet deadly, air-to-air combat are recounted in the words of the men who were there - who also share their innermost thoughts abo ut fe ar , c ou rage, and their resolve to defeat the Japanese. Lost when Brand was killed while covering the Italian campaign for Harper's magazine, this unique and important find wuld never have appeared in print except for a meeting of squadro n v e ter ans a nd the author's daughter. Graced with the poetic spirit and descriptive powers of his well-loved novels, Brand's account deserves a place among the classics of World War II literature for both its literary merit and its rich legac y of p erso nal ins igh ts i nto one of the pivotal campaigns of the Pacific War. In addition to being a revealing and informative historical bonanza, this work serves as a dramatic, inspirational testament to the men of an outstanding squadron wh o tri ump hed u nder dur ess, and to their legendary squadron commander, Lt. Col. Harold (Joe) Bauer, who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor." Dust jacket has light rubbing. Very Good+/Very Good+

316 pp, 8 3/8" H. B&w photographs. "(T)he powerful and often thrilling story of a man who daily enters that lonely region beyond the speed of sound. A narrative of needle-nosed ships flying at blistering speeds, it is also the moving testament of a man risking his life to push back the frontiers of scientific knowledge. Like St.-Exupery, Bridgeman is capable of describing the vastness and beauty of the skies. But as America's foremost experimental test pilot, he is constantly aware of the multitude of technical information which he is called upon to use at any given moment. After the war, Bill Bridgeman left the Navy a restless man. Seeking action, he joined Douglas Aircraft as an engineering test pilot. Soon he was asked to take over the final stages of the Skyrocket testing program. The Skyrocket, a javelin-shaped experimental ship, was a challenge to Bridgeman. The story of his day-by-day life with the plane is the substance of (this book)." Albatros, Berkhamsted, 1994.
36 pp, 11 5/8" H, soft cover (stapled in wraps). ISBN 0948414618 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, technical drawings/plans, colour profiles. "The Sopwith Snipe is firmly lodged in the minds of most WWI aeroplane enthusiasts due to the epic one-sided combat fought by Major William Barker on October 27 1918 in which he brought down four Fokker D.VIIs, an action that resulted in a well-earned Victoria Cross for the Canadian pilot. The Snipe had few other opportunities for glory; No .43 Squadron was the first unit to be equipped and made its first Snipe patrol on September 23 1918. Within five weeks nearly 100 Snipes were in France and No.208's Camels were in the process of being replaced by Snipes as the Armistice was dec l a r e d. In the immediate post-war period Snipes served with a dozen RAF Squadrons, 532 being recorded on charge by 1921, and the type soldiered on until 1928 when it was officially declared obsolete. Despite its necessarily limited role in the fi rs t ai r war the Snipe has been a popular choice for modellers and subject of at least two previous monographs and a nubmer of magazine articles. The 46th DATAFILE, however, offers the most comprehensive selection of illustrations on the type y et pub li she d in one volume and contains a great deal of information hitherto unrecorded." Rogers, who made the first transcontinental flight, surviving a dozen crashes, a broken arm and collarbone, and a score of wounds caused by the metal fragments of an exploded engine - and many others. 262 pp, small 4to (10 13/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1855326817 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps, technical drawings, color plates. "Designed at the height of the Cold War to be the ultimate surveillance platform, the SR-71 was operated exclusively by the USAF's 9th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing. In this new edition of Paul Crickmore's best-selling history, the fruits of an alliance between NASA and the Lockheed project (which began when NASA engineers lent a ha nd at Edwards AFB way back in 1967) are reviewed, as the 'space men' use the SR-71 for experiments on the outer edge of the atmosphere. Also new is a complete list of USAF missions flown out of Kadena, detailing duration, pilots, Reconnais s a n c e S y s tems Officers, altitude, etc. It is a fascinating addition to the history of operational flights over North Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, North Korea, Yemen, the Lebanon, Libya, Egypt, Syria, Iran and Cuba....Also revealed are details o f fl ig ht s c on du ct ed from Beale AFB, in California and RAF Mildenhall, Suffolk, England, into the Arctic Circle and over the Baltic to monitor the movements of Soviet nuclear submarines. With more than 250 illustrations, and full appendices p ro vid ing te ch ni cal sp eci fications and performance data, there is no more definitive work on this extraordinary aircraft." Osprey, (Reading, Berkshire, 1972).
207 pp, small 4to (10" H), hard cover in dust jacket. 250 b&w photographs. "This detailed account of the Polish Air Force - its birth in revolution, its brief but heroic period as the air arm of an independent nation, and its present status as one of the principal weapons in the armoury of the Soviet bloc - fills a serious gap in published aviation history. It is the first complete coverage of the subject to appear anywhere in the world...extensive appendices list data on aircraft supplies and equipment strength, operational records, commanders, bases, and losses and air victories in the two world wars...Based on much information new to the West, exhaustively documented, and written with admirable objectivity, it amounts to more than a history of an air force. The author has taken such trouble to explain the historical, social and economic background that it becomes an important contribution to the history of Poland itself, and a commentary on the socio-political problems of air technology which are just as applicable today." "Drawing on the mastery of technical detail he displayed so brilliantly in 'Bomber' (the s tory of an RAF bombing raid), (Deighton) gives us an altogether factual and comprehensive picture of the men, the machines, the strategies (and the blunders), and the events on both sides. He shows us the British squandering precious fighter pl a n e s in a futile effort to halt the German blitzkrieg in France, and the Germans refusing to believe in the effectiveness of British radar. He compares the fire power, combat tactics, and ground control, analyzing the performance of both the pl an es ( th e Messerschmitt broke up in mid-air more often than the Spitfire) and the pilots (men such as the fabled Douglas Bader, who flew better with two artificial legs than other men with two real ones; or 'Onkel Theo' Osterkamp, a WWI German a ce who be cam e an ace in WWII as well, until he was finally ordered off combat flying at the age of forty-eight). We see the British General Staff divided against itself (after the Battle, the man most responsible for the British victory - Sir Hu gh Dowd ing , C om mander in Chief, Fighter Command - was dismissed); the German High Command, unsure of its objectives; exaggerated British claims (and an almost fatal shortage of pilots); and German technical superiority that was continually und erc ut by Nazi in c ompetence." 60 Dezarrois, Andre, editor. Translated from the French by Philip John Stead. (Rene Mouchotte.) THE MOUCHOTTE DIARIES, 1940-1943.
London Staples Press 1956 First British Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Fair
221 pp, 8 3/4" H. Frontispiece. "This is the famous Rene who was transformed by three years of war from an unknown pilot of the Reserve into one of the great leaders of Free France in the air, Pierre Clostermann's hero and commanding officer. In 1940 Rene made his daring escape from Oran in an unserviceable plane seized from under the very noses of the authorities. This was a flight not away from danger, but into the thick of the Battle of Britain. He fought with the R.A.F. in Hurricanes and Spitfires, attacking enemy shipping, sweeping over France, giving air-cover to the Dieppe landing, duelling with the Luftwaffe. His exceptional courage and integrity, his powers of leadership and skill as an aerial tactician quickly won the admiration of his superiors. Rene's airborne career culminated at Biggin Hill where he commanded the fighter wing and it was he who shot down the 1,000th German plane recorded by the fighter group there shortly before his death. In the end, his greatest wish was granted, for he had written in his diary: 'If I am not to survive the war, let me at least have the satisfaction of falling to the enemy's fire'.
