THE TOM THOMSON MYSTERY., Little, William T. Foreword by W.J. Eastaugh.
42 Little, William T. Foreword by W.J. Eastaugh. THE TOM THOMSON MYSTERY.
Toronto McGraw-Hill 1970 0070926557 / 9780070926554 Hard Cover Good+ Good+
239 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w photographs, reproductions, map. "In 1956, nearly forty years after the death of Canadian artist, Tom Thomson, William T. Little and three companions set themselves to a macabre task. Ever since July 16, 1917, when the artist's badly decomposed body was found floating in the waters of Canoe Lake, controversy and conjecture hovered over the matter of how Tom Thomson really met his death. It was as a result of this prolonged uncertainty that the four men began digging in the little cemetery in Algonquin Park where Thomson was supposedly buried. They were determined to solve, if only for themselves, part of the mystery that surrounded the name of Tom Thomson. What they discovered only confirmed their suspicion that the full story of Thomson's untimely death was not in fact as history had recorded it. The lack of sound and conclusive evidence from earlier investigations set William Little into action. Meticulously he pieced together everything that had ever been written, documented, speculated, or theorized about Thomson during the artist's lengthy periods in Algonquin Park - with special emphasis on those strange events which occurred prior to and after his 'accidental death by drowning'. On the one hand William Little has been able to give us a fuller understanding of both Thomson's personality and his instincts as a painter. On the other, he has amassed considerable evidence that suggests a murder, a suspect, and a motive." Large diagonal creasing on page leaf xiii/xiv, small light stain on fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has light browning at edges and on spine/flap-folds, several very small edge tears and one small 'v' tear on front hinge - all archivally taped, light rubbing/soiling, large corner crease on front flap.

MABON AND THE MYSTERIES OF BRITAIN: AN EXPLORATION OF THE MABINOGION., Matthews, Caitlin.
46 Matthews, Caitlin. MABON AND THE MYSTERIES OF BRITAIN: AN EXPLORATION OF THE MABINOGION.
London Arkana 1987 1850630526 / 9781850630524 First Edition Soft Cover Very Good Chesca Potter.
205 pp, small 8vo (7 3/4" H). B&w illustrations. "On one level (this) is a literary guide and deals with the mythological patterns which underlie the Mabinogion. On another, it is a deep exploration of the Western Mysteries as they emerge from the tales of the Four Branches, of Colhwch and Olwen and Taliesin. Within these stories lie the identities of two major figures of the native tradition: Mabon, the Wondrous Youth who is lost and found, and Modron, his mother, the Great Goddess herself. Here the initiatory pattern of Britain's inner guardians is revealed in the Succession of the Pendragons; the release of Mabon is affected with the help of the Totem Beasts, before the birth of time; while the cosmic harp of the Wondrous Youth ushers in the Aquarian Age. Drawing on this first exploration of the Mabinogion, the reader can trace for himself the archetypes and mythological themes from which these medieval stories, themselves descendants of proto-Celtic oral tradition, are derived." Exterior - minor edge wear, soft crease at top part of front hinge, light browning to edges of text block, small soft corner crease on rear cover, spine flat and uncreased, ISBN label on rear cover.

"Every years the youngest Singing Boy had brought a swarm of the Cathedral bees to be blessed, so that their beeswax would furnish good candles throughout the coming year. When John Owen became Beekeeper, all this was long ago in the past; but the tradition had been kept up, and the Beekeeper still sang an introit before the Bishop once a year - though few people remembered why. John Owen wriggled out of being Beekeeper because he hated the idea of the solo in the Cathedral; but he soon found that he was thought to have shirked his duty. And about the same time, helping Dr Sutherland and the organist with 'his' bees, he found that he was quite good as a real beekeeper, if not a singing one; and then he and Trevithic discovered a forgotten passage high up in one of the Cathedral towers - ." "Built to astonish and to celebrate the magnificence of the most powerful families in the world, royal palaces and houses are the consequences of an age in which the splendor and opulence of a prince or a people could be measured by the decor of a salon, by the grandeur of a building or the originality of a fountain. Suspended between the sky and the earth, as occurred in the Far East, or solidly rooted to the ground, as was the norm in Europe, the house of the monarch has alwys been the meeting point of two minds: that of the master, who saw in his house the expression of his power and creativity, and that of the architect a n d t e a m s of craftsmen who built it for him, often creating a noble monument rather than a place to live....This book tells of the mysteries and legends of the buildings and the official and secret versions of the history of their occupants. 51 Neillands, Robin. THE WARS OF THE ROSES.
London Brockhampton 1999 1860199976 / 9781860199974 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
223 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, maps, genealogical table. "The vicious wars between the English noble houses of York and Lancaster marked the end of medieval England and the birth of the Renaissance. The end of that thirty-year period of strife and bloodshed, which succeeding generations have called the Wars of the Roses, saw the collapse of the great Plantagenet dynasty, rulers of all England and much of France for over three hundred years, and the rise of the Tudors, destined to dominate English political life during the next century, following the triumph of Henry Tudor over Richard III at Bosworth Field. Robin Neillands tells this tale in clear and uncomplicated language, unravelling a fascinating and complex story to bring this period in England's history vividly to life. He also investigates the mysteries concerning the sudden marriage of Edward IV, the seizure of Edward's throne by his brother Richard of Gloucester and the murder of Richard's nephews, the Princes in the Tower."

256 pp, 8vo (8" H). Greenhill Books' Vintage Crime Classics series. "Near six foot tall, lithe and powerful, November Joe is a Canadian woodsman who would sooner hunt deer than man any day. In these stories of detection, set in the wilderness far away from city streets, November Joe shows that he is not only the product but also the master of his environment. The author was a sportsman and naturalist who spent much of his life travelling and hunting, and used his own experiences and wilderness lore as background for this book. First published before the outbreak of World War One (during which Prichard organized a corps of sharp-shooters), these stories capture the clear, crisp outdoor atmosphere of the North-American backwoods. 'November Joe' is recommended in 'Queen's Quorum' as one of the 106 most important detective-crime story books published." Philadelphia Triangle Books 1946 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
354 pp, small 8vo (7 5/8" H). Pale orange/buff cloth with black lettering on spine, black lettering and decoration on front board. "Marco was sitting in his chair in the little private beach on rocky Spanish Cape, and he was quite dead. The dashing, handsome despoiler of women seemed to be musing no doubt on the hold he had over the frantic, desperate women in the house above him. For there was a faint smile on his strong and mocking face. But around his neck was an ugly line of red. The really startling thing about Marco's corpse was that he was naked. Under the long opera cloak draped about his virile figure, he was without coat, trousers or shirt - completely nude! Yet of all the people gathered at the house of Walter Godfrey, eccentric millionaire, on remote Spanish Cape, Marco's was the only face that did not wear the tense mask of dread. It was fortunate indeed that Ellery Queen, that amiable maestro of murder, happened to be vacationing nearby. He it is that solves the brutal and baffling case of the murdered philanderer, to the mingled horror and delight of the most hardened reader." Light browning to pages, a few pages with wrinkle at top part of page, minor edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling and a few tiny tears at top/bottom of spine, minor darkening at top/bottom edges of flaps, protected in a mylar sleeve.
