HOPE IS THE THING WITH FEATHERS: A PERSONAL CHRONICLE OF VANISHED BIRDS., Cokinos, Christopher.
42 Cokinos, Christopher. HOPE IS THE THING WITH FEATHERS: A PERSONAL CHRONICLE OF VANISHED BIRDS.
New York Jeremy P. Tarcher / Putnam 2000 1585420069 / 9781585420063 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
359 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "There was a time when massive flocks of Passenger Pigeons blotted out the sun, and bright green Carolina Parakeets were so numerous that they looked, according to an early American pioneer, 'like an atmosphere of gems.' But these birds - as well as the Labrador Duck, the Ivory-billed Woodpecker, the Heath Hen, and the Great Auk - now live only as tantalizing but hazy legends. Driven by a desire to understand how and why this came to be, (the author) embarked on ten years of extraordinary detective work. Traveling from Bird Rock in the Gulf of St. Lawrence to Louisiana's tangled bayous in search of those who stalked these birds and those who tried to save them, he discovered strange stories and glorious quests, tales of scientific heroism and political stupidity, of inconceivable apathy and equally astonishing personal devotion. A compelling blend of science, history, politics, and memoir, (this) is a richly detailed and ultimately uplifting narrative of dedication, discovery, and wonder." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkle at top of rear panel.

43 Collard, Elizabeth. THE POTTERS' VIEW OF CANADA: CANADIAN SCENES ON NINETEENTH-CENTURY EARTHENWARE.
Kingston McGill-Queen's University Press 1983 0773504214 / 9780773504219 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
194 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4" H). B&w photographs, reproductions, marks. "This is the first book to be devoted exclusively to potters' views of Canada. The potters' views of Canada have a many-sided appeal, linking the world of artists, printmakers, and photographers to the ceramics industry. Covering the period from the beginning of the nineteenth century to the end of Queen Victoria's reign, this volume focuses chiefly on wares made for the dinner table or the washstand. All are earthenware, decorated by transfer printing, and produced by British potters. The scenes they depict range from the awesome falls at Niagara to early steamboats on the St Lawrence, from igloos in the Arctic to a governor's residence in New Brunswick. Elizabeth Collard traces the evolution of these wares, placing them in their historical setting and identifying the sources from which many of the views were derived. She also provides much detail on the English and Scottish potters and on the artists whose work they adapted to their own use." Very minor edge wear at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light rubbing to glossy surface.

THE BROKEN PLUME: A PLATOON COMMANDER'S STORY, 1940-45., Craig, Norman.
46 Craig, Norman. THE BROKEN PLUME: A PLATOON COMMANDER'S STORY, 1940-45.
London Imperial War Museum 1982 0901627224 / 9780901627223 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+ Charles Freeman drawings.
191 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). Monotone drawings by Charles Freeman, b&w photographs, maps. "The author's experiences as a platoon commander in the Second World War were shared by many others but few published accounts capture so faithfully the particular flavour of that conflict or the impact of battle on the individual soldier. Norman Craig was a conscript, commissioned after a year in the ranks. He served in three infantry regiments: the Welch in the United Kingdom; the Royal Sussex in the Western Desert, and Iraq and Persia; and the East Surreys in Italy. He saw action at El Alamein and in northern Italy where, only a fortnight before the end of the war in Europe, he was wounded. Between these spells of fighting he was concerned with the routine of soldiering - training, parades, courses, inspections and regimental chores - which occupied the greater part of of a subaltern's time. Norman Craig writes perceptively and with unusual candour about his war service. His book is both a personal record of considerable human interest and a significant addition to the literature of the Second World War." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling, minor soiling on front flap.

Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Western Producer Prairie Books 1982 0888330901 / 9780888330901 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
177 pp, 11 1/4" H. "Saskatoon began as a vision of the Temperance Colonization Society. Its members formulated a scheme for a colony in the West where a way of life free from the evils of alcohol might be fostered. Early in the spring of 1882, an advance party travelled by rail and wagon to examine their grant of land and to choose the administrative site for the settlement. By the beginning of the twentieth century, the temperance ideals had become secondary to boosterism. By 1905 discussions were underway to amalgamate the original Nutana settlement with 'Saskatoon' and Riversdale on the west side of the river. Their combined population of 4,500 allowed Saskatoon a charter under city status in 1906. By 1908 the city was served by three railway companies and the 'Hub City' station was one of the busiest in the West. (This book) brings the story of the city to life through nearly 300 photographs. It registers changes through two world wars, during the periods of prosperity and recession, into the optimism of the fifties and sixties and the more speculative expansion of the seventies." Christmas gift inscription in ink on front free endpaper, book is lightly cocked, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor glue residue at top edge of rear endpapers. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear - mainly at top/bottom of spine ans flap-folds, light rubbing including faint scratches, 2" edge tear with old tape on inside, two tiny edge tears.

"(A) stunning exhibition of the city's mag-nificent art treasures. Compiled by the directors of Prague's National Museum and National Gallery, this important and eye-filling work is a rich cornucopia which art historians, students of central Europe, and travelers to the historic city may sample with profit and pleasure. Itself an art treasure with its ancient buildings, historic monuments, and panoramic views, 'the city of a hundred towers' is home to notable collections of paintings, drawings, sculpture, and objects d'art dating from Charles IV and even earlier. Reflecting Prague's position at the heart of Europe along centuries-old trade routes, these collections encompass the continent's many schools of art, architecture, and handicrafts and repre-sent a distillation of Prague's turbulent thousand-year history. Modern scholarship, including some extraordinary scholarly detective work on the Prague Castle Gallery collection, has uncovered, restored, and made available to experts and public alike many little-known treasures. Equally impressive are collections of early art, coins, astronomical instruments, and Bohemian and modern Czechoslovak glass and porcelain. History of church and state can be glimpsed in the art of stone-cutters, goldsmith and silversmiths, weavers and embroiderers, and masters of illuminated manu-scripts."
