42 Nesbitt-Dufort, John, D.S.O. OPEN COCKPIT: FLYING PRE-WAR FIGHTING AND TRAINING AIRCRAFT.
London Speed and Sports 1970 851130402 First Edition Soft Cover Very Good+
77 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "In 1930, when he was eighteen years old, the author was granted a short service commission in the Royal Air Force and after completing the then one year's flying and ground subjects training he was posted to the famous 25(F) Squadron at Hawkinge. It was here, except for a few months in the Fleet Air Arm, that he spent the remainder of his five year commission flying Siskins and Furies, both single-seater fighters. After completing a Central Flying School course he joined the De Havilland School of Flying as an instructor in 1935 and of the 120 odd pupils he taught to fly at Hatfield, at least a couple were destined to become famous Battle of Britain pilots. Now, forty years since he first soloed and after over 10,000 hours flying on 104 different types of aircraft, he seems very well qualified to discuss some of those long forgotten old 'planes that he flew before rejoining as a Flying Officer on the outbreak of World War II." Contents: Introduction; Avro Trainer; Siskin IIIA; The Fury; The Fairey Flycatcher; Hawker Hart; Avro 504; Hawker Tomtit; Fairey IIIF; Gloster Gauntlet; De Havilland 9A; Bristol Fighter; Tiger Moth. Toronto Clarke, Irwin 1959 First Edition Hard Cover Good- Fair
290 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs. "Leslie Roberts begins his history of the RCAF with an account of (the first flight in Canada on Baddeck Bay in 1909). Five and one-half years later the first World War broke out and (he) records the exploits in that conflict of the Canadians who took to the air in such numbers that in 1918 they constituted more than fifty percent of the flying personnel of the RAF. He describes the protracted and painful birth of the RCAF, its struggles for survival during its early days, when to justify its existence a succession of economy-minded governments assigned it such employment as flying fire-spotting patrols, carrying out search-and-rescue and mercy missions in the North, timber cruising for the provinces and photography and mapping tasks in the high Arctic. When a second World War broke out (these airmen) passed on their accumulated knowledge and experience to the young Canadians who, with their colleagues from the other Commonwealth countries, met and turned back the challenge of Hitler's Luftwaffe and shattered the wall of his European Fortress. (Roberts includes an) account of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan; of the RCAF 's participation in the Korean conflict; its contribution to NATO and the United Nations Emergency Force; and its present status as guardian of Canada's three shorelines, and our first line of defence. (A)n excellent record of flight in Canada, and of the dedicated service of the RCAF to its country in the cause of freedom." CONSTANT VIGILANCE: THE RAF REGIMENT IN THE BURMA CAMPAIGN., Warwick, Nigel W. M.
58 Warwick, Nigel W. M. CONSTANT VIGILANCE: THE RAF REGIMENT IN THE BURMA CAMPAIGN.
Barnsley, South Yorkshire Pen & Sword Aviation 2007 1844155005 / 9781844155002 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
302 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). B&w photographs, b&w and colour maps. "A forgotten air force in a forgotten war. This history finally addresses in detail the exploits of the Royal Air Force's youngest Corps, the RAF Regiment, in the campaign in South-East Asia. A dedicated and specialist ground force for active defence of airfields, the Regiment played a vital and significant role in the two major battles for Burma. The struggle at Imphal ranks alongside Stalingrad and Alamein in its significance for the defeat of the Axis. Here, the Regiment patrolled the airstrips and jungle hills and ensured they were clear of Japanese intruders. In March 1945 the Regiment participated in the masterstroke of the Burma campaign; the thrust for, and capture of Meiktila. That the Regiment was able to carry out its tasks so effectively and efficiently despite inadequate numbers, outdated equipment and often with a significant proportion of the unit debilitated with tropical ailments, is a tribute to the diligence, tenacity, persistence and professionalism of its officers and airmen. The book draws on the operations record books, diaries and recollections of the men who served inthe RAF Regiment in South-East Asia Command. It is strongly supported by maps and diagrams and is illustrated with many hitherto unpublished photographs. Small area of very faint line indentations on free front endpaper, small bump at bottom corner of front board. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine, very faint line indentations on front and rear panels.
