FLYING COLORS. FEATURING OVER 1300 MILITARY AIRCRAFT MARKINGS AND COLOR SCHEMES., Green, William and Swanborough, Gordon, compilers.
41 Green, William and Swanborough, Gordon, compilers. FLYING COLORS. FEATURING OVER 1300 MILITARY AIRCRAFT MARKINGS AND COLOR SCHEMES.
London Salamander 1997 086101944X / 9780861019441 Hard Cover Fine Very Good John Weal, Richard Caruana and Brian Knight.
207 pp, 4to (12" H). Profusely illustrated in colour. "Military aircraft have been variously daubed, cunningly camouflaged, boastfully personalized or otherwise extravagantly colored since they first took to the air more than 80 years ago. From the time that the identity of aircraft was established with national insignia, the markings of aircraft has become a science, and their decoration an art form. At times of tension, trends have been toward camouflage colors for concealment as international relationships deteriorated. Yet, in peace and war, there have also been 'anti-camouflage' color schemes applied specifically to render aircraft more conspicuous for training, rescue and other purposes. 'Flying Colors' is a superb survey of this fascinating scene, depicting more than 100 different aircraft types, from the World War I Spads to the modern swing-wing Tornado, in more than 1300 spectacular illustrations. Splendid use is made of finely detailed profile drawings, top and bottom, head-on and 'scrap' views, together with emblem and other detail enlargements, all in full-color and each extensively researched by the compilers and artists who have striven for accuracy and interest. Each first-class drawing is described, with identification of squadron, unit, theater and period, and often even the pilot's name and rank too! Recognized as a major landmark in aviation publishing, this volume will especially delight aircraft modelmakers and all enthusiasts of the dramatic history of warplanes." Dust jacket has moderate creasing at top of spine - very light wrinkling at top/bottom of flap-folds and at bottom of spine.

206 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H). B&w photographs. "Charles Pickard joined the Royal Air Force before the outbreak of World War II, and at the beginning of hostilities was posted to No.99 Bomber Squadron and was later to command the Czech 311 Squadron. He took part in the Bruneval raid, and came to the forefront of public attention when he starred as 'F for Freddie' in 'Target for Tonight', a film made to illustrate the operational role of the bomber. His secret missions began when he was posted to RAF Tempsford, the jumping off ground for the SOE operations from where, as a Lysander pilot, his sorties took him deep into enemy territory at night to drop secret agents and supplies. Time after time he demonstrated his extraordinary ability for night flying but, ironically, was killed while taking a prominent part in the famous daylight raid on the prison at Amiens." 47 Hartling, Ernest K. and Kranz, Jo. BLUENOSE MASTER: THE MEMOIRS OF CAPTAIN ERNEST K. HARTLING.
Willowdale, Ontario Hounslow Press 1989 0888821182 / 9780888821188 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+ Gerard Williams.
177 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w drawings by Gerard Williams, plus b&w photographs, maps. "(B)orn on April 30, 1906, (Ernest Hartling) grew up in his grandparents' house, overlooking Spanish Ship Bay, Nova Scotia. Entranced by the sight of the billowing white sails of Grandfather's schooner, he embarked on a lifelong fascination with ships and the sea. As a small boy, when he was allowed to steer his father's ship, he knew he was born to be a sailor. In this book, (he) takes us on a voyage through a life crammed with adventure, colour, and excitement: his eyewitness account of the Great Halifax Explosion; crossing the Atlantic at the age of twelve as an ordinary seaman; striking out alone at fourteen in pursuit of his dream of a seafaring life; but that is just the beginning. He sailed the high seas on numerous ships to countless ports and, while still very young, became master of a ship. In Halifax, during the Second World War, Ernest took on the dangerous job of harbour pilot, guiding convoys safely out to sea. Relishing the challenge, he remained a pilot for twenty-nine years. Illuminating every page is the character of Ernest Hartling, who retired after more than fifty years at sea, only to return to it as master of the 'Bluenose II' - the crowning achievement of his life." Dust jacket has minor rubbing - mainly on rear panel.

ON TARGET., Holmes, John. (pseud. of Raymond Souster)
48 Holmes, John. (pseud. of Raymond Souster) ON TARGET.
Village Book Store Press, Toronto, 1972, first edition.
248 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0919621015 "...until now there has been no fictional account (and very little of anything else) about that superb air force within an air force, the R.C.A.F.'s Six Bomber Group of R.A.F. Bomb er Command. Now....Canadians can get a glimpse of life in a typical Canadian heavy bomber squadron based in Yorkshire, England, as it was in the later turbulent days of the Second World War. The time is March, 1945. For Bill Sutcliffe, ai r b o m b e r from Toronto, and for Walt, Dave, Max and the others of his crew, it seems as though the war will end before they have a chance to prove themselves in action. But suddenly, almost before they know it, they are flying deep into Germa ny ag ai ns t th e enemy. An enemy retreating on the ground, his air force largely destroyed, but still undefeated and fighting deperately on. They soon learn the terrors of murderous flak concentrations, and have thrust at them a new formidable adv e rsa ry as th e f ir st jet fighters rise into the skies over Germany to do battle with them. How the Canadian airmen survive or die, how they spend their few precious, off-duty hours, is really the subject of this novel. But this book cannot avo id bei ng a p art hym n o f praise to that largely unsung work-horse of Bomber Command, the Handley Page Halifax bomber. To "N" for "Nan" and thousands of others like her, Canadian airmen like these in the story owe a debt which has never be en tr uly paid - unti l 'O n Tar get' ." Toronto University of Toronto Press 1977 0802022707 / 9780802022707 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good
342 pp, 10 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "In 1898 a group of scientists, working without pay, often under hazardous conditions with only the most primitive equipment, began a systematic study of the fishes of Canada's inland and marine waters. The team operated under the aegis of a board of management which was later to evolve into the Fisheries Research Board, a scientific organization that has placed Candada among the world's leaders in fishery knowledge. This history of the Fisheries Research Board examines the aims and achievements of its research, its attempts to deal with the often conflicting demands of pure and applied science, and its confrontations with a frequently uncomprehending and dissatisfied government. The people who shaped and sustained the organization figure prominently in the account. In-depth taped interviews with senior members and employees, as well as the Annual Reports and other publications of the Department of Fisheries, have enabled (the author) to produce a rich history of a remarkable scientific organization." 57 Kimber, Stephen. LOYALISTS AND LAYABOUTS. THE RAPID RISE AND FASTER FALL OF SHELBURNE, NOVA SCOTIA: 1783-1792.
Doubleday Canada 2008 038566172X / 9780385661720 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
335 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "The few hundred Loyalists who gathered at Roubalet's Tavern in New York one night in 1782 shared a nightmare of the past and a dream for the future. In the aftermath of the American Revolution, they found themselves abandoned by the king to whom they had promised their loyalty, and unwelcome in the land that had so recently been theirs. On the rocky shores of Roseway Bay on the south coast of Nova Scotia, beside one of the best harbours in the world, they would found a new and improved New York City. It would be cosmopolitan, but more refined, more royal, more loyal and certainly more exclusive than the place they were leaving forever. At first, all seemed to go according to plan. Shelburne, as it was called, quickly became the fourth-largest city in North America. At the time, Nova Scotia Governor John Parr grandly decribed it as 'the most considerable, most flourishing and most expeditious (city) ever -- built in so short a time --'. Within the decade, however, the Loyalists' dream city was well on its way to becoming a ghost town. What went wrong? This extraordinary and yet little-told episode from our nation's past is brought to exciting life. Combining painstaking research and a novelstic flair for narrative, (Kimber) charts Shelburne's 'rapid rise and faster fall' through the intertwined experiences of an eclectic collection of its early settlers, from aristocrats to freed slaves, colonial officers to local entrepreneurs." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, a few tiny edge bumps to boards. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, minor rubbing.
