WELLINGTON WINGS: AN RAF INTELLIGENCE OFFICER IN THE WESTERN DESERT., Chappell, F.R. Foreword by Air Commodore C.J. Mount.
41 Chappell, F.R. Foreword by Air Commodore C.J. Mount. WELLINGTON WINGS: AN RAF INTELLIGENCE OFFICER IN THE WESTERN DESERT.
Somerton, Somerset Crecy 1992 0947554270 / 9780947554279 Hard Cover Fine Near Fine
282 pp, lg 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs, maps. "The author was a squadron and wing intelligence officer and kept long and detailed diaries of the day to day life in the Desert Group, and on these the book is largely based. The result is a vivid and realistic picture of the Desert atmosphere; he communicates the tenseness during the nights when the Wellingtons were away on missions, the crashes, the accidents, the debriefings, and the dreaded sandstorms. He recaptures the excitement of the perilous operations, some of which he flew on himself, as well as the lighter moments during stand downs and leave periods. This is an outstanding contribution to aviation history, conveying as it does not only individual heroisms but the corporateness of a squadron in wartime." Book is Fine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

THE TRADITIONAL HISTORY AND CHARACTERISTIC SKETCHES OF THE OJIBWAY NATION., Copway, G. (George), or, Kah-ge-ga-gah-bowh, Chief of the Ojibway Nation.
45 Copway, G. (George), or, Kah-ge-ga-gah-bowh, Chief of the Ojibway Nation. THE TRADITIONAL HISTORY AND CHARACTERISTIC SKETCHES OF THE OJIBWAY NATION.
Toronto Prospero 2001 1552671801 / 9781552671801 Facsimile Reprint. Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
298 pp, 8vo (8 7/8" H). "Numerically the largest group of Native North Americans, the Ojibway were the first to have a history written by one of their own people. Published in 1850, its author, George Copway, or Kah-ge-g a-gah-bowh, had already achieved a certain amount of fame delivering passionate lectures in North America and Europe. Attired in traditional Ojibway dress, Copway held up the virtues of tribal life while promoting mid-nineteenth-century ideas on education. Arguing for a separate Native North American state, Copway garnered considerable support from both Natives and non-Natives. (This), Copway's finest book, is in many ways a summation of his lectures. Written primarily for a non- Native audience, Copway viewed the book as an attempt to 'awaken a deeper feeling' toward the people of the First Nations. Much more than a history, the work in an exploration of Ojibway culture through which Copway had sought to induce the British and American governments to greater efforts in improving their relationships with Native North Americans." Thorlakson - 'Doctor Thor' as he is affectionately known. There are of course many whose contributions in particular spheres were unsurpassed, but none whose vision was broader; none whose grasp of the import of social developments for medical practice was firmer; none whose ability to transform grand designs into reality was greater. The story of the life and career of Dr. Thor reveals much of the drive, tenacity and dynamism that animated this remarkable man; but for each of us whose life has been touched in some special way by him (this book) will bring to mind many personal recollections of the force of this personality'." "In the spectacular expanse of wind, water, rock and sky that is Georgian Bay, there is only one Cognashene . Historically rich, geographically gorgeous, shaped by colourful characters and events, Cognashene's allure is as powerful today as it was for the first hardy souls to arrive at its scenic shores. (This book) celebrates the uniquely Canadian island community and traces its dramatic journey from its native roots, through its industrial development to its days of pioneer settlement. In these pages you'll meet Champlain and his young protege, Etienne Brule. You'll find out what it took to be a success - or a failure! - in the lumber days. You can settle in for a visit at Longuissa, Whalen's or Blarney Castle, or, if it's Sunday - and you're so inclined - stop by the Church on the Rocks. And you'll discover throughout the breathtaking beauty that has captivated countless artists, including A.Y. Jackson and other members of the Group of Seven. Part historical document, part warm-hearted slice-of-cottage-life, (it) reveals a distinctive and winning personality. It is, quite simply, the essence of Cognashene." 49 Delve, Ken. D-DAY: THE AIR BATTLE.
Ramsbury Crowood Press 2004 1861267045 / 9781861267047 Revised and Enlarged Edition. Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
192 pp, 10" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions, maps/plans. "6 June 1944 saw the Allied invasion of occupied Europe - one of the riskiest military operations of World War Two. The part played by air power in the success of the operation was crucial. This was the greatest concentration of striking power ever seen: 12,000 combat aircraft. Fighter-bombers such as the P-47 Thunderbolt and Hawker Typhoon bombed, strafed and rocketed tactical targets with great accuracy, while strategic bombers, escorted by hundreds of fighters, targeted bridges, marshalling yards, coastal guns and military stores. Other aircraft flew sophisticated decoy operations and hundreds of transports dropped paratroops or released gliders. In this, the only full-length book on the subject, Ken Delve examines the air campaign from the pre-invasion bombing strategy that prepared the battlefield to the massive air effort that accompanied the actual assault and the air umbrella during the vital weeks following the landings. Originally published in 1994, (it) has been substantially enlarged, re-illustrated and completely reset (providing) comprehensive coverage of this vital air campaign." 50 Devins, Joseph H., Jr. THE VAAGSO RAID: THE COMMANDO ATTACK THAT CHANGED THE COURSE OF WORLD WAR II.
Chilton, Philadelphia, 1968.
222 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, maps. "In the dark, early morning hours of Saturday, December 27, 1941, a small force of British warships escorting two camouflaged excursion steamers slipped past a German lookou t station and sailed boldly into one of the great fjords of occupied Norway. Aboard the two steamers a tense group of British and Norwegian commandos rechecked their weapons and waited for the reaction of the nearby German coastal batteries . T h e t arget: Vaagso Island. Earlier thrusts by British raiding parties had deliberately avoided heavily defended sectors of the enemy coast. This was to be the first raid of the war on a fortified postion, a demonstration that the offensive sp i ri t wa s s trong in Britain despite the Nazi conquest of the Continent and the humiliation of Dunkerque. But the consequences of this sortie would reach far beyond the snow-covered mountains which reverberated that Saturday with the thud of ex pl o sio ns an d the snarl and rattle of sub-machine guns. The British gained vital experience in inter-service cooperation and information that would prove invaluable in subsequent raids on Dieppe and St. Nazaire. But in Berlin, Hitler was asto nis he d at th e da ri ng a nd apparent readiness of the British to hurl their forces into the teeth of a well prepared defense. As a result, he made decisions of major strategic importance. This is the story of a group of courageous men, of how they de velop ed a new typ e of fighting force, how they fought, how they died, and how they altered the course of the war." One tiny corner bump, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light edge wear, two small light soiling marks at bott om of rear pas tedown , lig ht da mpne ss ma rks at top/bottom of front board. 51 Dezarrois, Andre, editor. Translated from the French by Philip John Stead. (Rene Mouchotte.) THE MOUCHOTTE DIARIES, 1940-1943.
London Staples Press 1956 First British Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Fair
221 pp, 8 3/4" H. Frontispiece. "This is the famous Rene who was transformed by three years of war from an unknown pilot of the Reserve into one of the great leaders of Free France in the air, Pierre Clostermann's hero and commanding officer. In 1940 Rene made his daring escape from Oran in an unserviceable plane seized from under the very noses of the authorities. This was a flight not away from danger, but into the thick of the Battle of Britain. He fought with the R.A.F. in Hurricanes and Spitfires, attacking enemy shipping, sweeping over France, giving air-cover to the Dieppe landing, duelling with the Luftwaffe. His exceptional courage and integrity, his powers of leadership and skill as an aerial tactician quickly won the admiration of his superiors. Rene's airborne career culminated at Biggin Hill where he commanded the fighter wing and it was he who shot down the 1,000th German plane recorded by the fighter group there shortly before his death. In the end, his greatest wish was granted, for he had written in his diary: 'If I am not to survive the war, let me at least have the satisfaction of falling to the enemy's fire'. The personal magnetism and sincerity of 'Commandant Rene' make (this) an original and valuable contribution to the literature of the war in the air." CANADIAN IMPRESSIONISM., Duval, Paul.
57 Duval, Paul. CANADIAN IMPRESSIONISM.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1990 0771029650 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good
166 pp, square 4to (11 3/4" H). "This beautiful volume, full of the light and colour that characterize most Impressionist art, is a thoroughly enjoyable guide to Canadian Impressionist painting from roughly 1885 to 1920. It brings together, for the first time in book form, the Canadian representatives of the world's most popular and accessible school of painting, offering a totally fresh look at a now-vanished society, and presenting a strong contrast to the isolated, unpopulated vision of the country usually portrayed by the Group of Seven - although members of that group are represented in their earlier, more intimate styles. 'Canadian Impressionism' conveys a vivid cross-section of the subject, including many paintings that have never before been reproduced. The work of neglected artists such as Helen McNicoll, Frank Armington, John S. Gordon, John Russell, and William Clapp is featured among the seventy full-colour plates, alongside the more familiar talents of J.W. Morrice, Paul Peel, Lawren Harris, Maurice Cullen, and A.Y. Jackson. (A) revelation and a delight, showing as it does a charming side of Canadian art that has not, until now, received the attention that it deserves." Light toning to edges of pages/text block, waviness to top/bottom edges of text block, several very small dents at bottom edge of boards, a few small shallow dents on fore-edge of boards, several very light stains on boards. Dust jacket has minor waviness at top/bottom edges, very light toning at top/bottom inside edges, sharp crease down rear hinge

Is it a grotesque mistake, a sinister plot, or just the strategic equivalent of a highway pileup?
