41 Cremony, John C. LIFE AMONG THE APACHES.
New York Indian Head Books 1991 0880296526 / 9780880296526 Facsimile Reprint. Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
322 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). Facsimile reprint of 1868 edition. From the Introduction: "We have never striven to make ourselves intelligently acquainted with (the various tribes occupying the vast region which extends from the Colorado river on the west, to the settlements of Texas on the east, and from Taos in New Mexico to Durango in the Mexican Republic). Nearly all that relates to them is quite as uncertain and indefinite to our comprehension as that which obtains in the center of Africa. Those who were best informed on the matter, and had given it the closest attention, were, at the time - most unfortunately - the least capable of imparting their information; while those who were ignorant of the subject have been the most forward to give the results of their fragmentary gleanings. If this volume shall have the effect of bettering our present deplorable Indian policy, by letting in some light, it will accomplish the author's object." The author was "Interpreter to the U.S. Boundary Commission, under the Hon. John R. Bartlett, in 1849, '50 and '51, and late Major of California Volunteer Cavalry, operating in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Western Arkansas." Dust jacket has a few areas of very minor edge wrinkling.

45 Davis, Richard C., editor. (Sir John Franklin.) SIR JOHN FRANKLIN'S JOURNALS AND CORRESPONDENCE: THE FIRST ARCTIC LAND EXPEDITION, 1819-1822.
Toronto Champlain Society 1995 0969342543 / 9780969342540 Limited Edition Hard Cover Near Fine

B&w illustrations, 3 maps (2 double-page). "This volume contains nearly complete transcriptions of the extant journals kept by John Franklin during his expedition to the unknown northern coast of the North American continent in the years 1819 to 1822. Only a few abstracts and tables of observations from the extant journal books have been excluded, and they, for the most part, are available in the appendices to Franklin's published 'Narrative of a Journey to the Shores of the Polar Sea in the Years 1819, 20, 21, and 22'. The present volume also includes transcriptions of a selection of correspondence written during the preparation for and execution of Franklin's first expedition. While most of the letters included here were written by Franklin, some were written by other correspondents to Franklin. A few highly selective pieces were neither written nor recieved by Franklin, but bear special relevance to letters that Franklin wrote. The Introduction provides short biographies of some of the men involved, and then establishes an historical context in which to situate the 1819-22 expedition. The sources of the various documents are next identified, followed by an attempt to understand what brought about the deaths of 11 out of 20 men under Franklin's leadership." Some minor wrinkling to fore-edge of some pages.

Toronto The Champlain Society 1980 Limited Edition Hard Cover Very Good+
229 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4" H) - red cloth with gilt lettering/crest on spine. No. 844 of Twelve Hundred and Fifty Copies of this Volume prnted for the Champlain Society. B&w photographs, maps, reproductions. "John Prince was undoubtedly one of the most colourful individuals to reside in Upper Canada during the half century that preceded Confederation. (The mythology that had grown up around his memory in southwestern Ontario identified him as the product of an illegal marriage between George IV and Maria Anne Fitzherbert.) His eventful career as an attorney, politician, soldier, entrepreneur, and jurist caused him to become a legend in his own lifetime both in Essex County, where he resided at Sandwich from his arrival in 1833 until 1860, and in Sault Ste Marie where he spent the last ten years of his life as Judge of the Algoma District. In the legislature his independence and erratic individualism soon earned him the reputation of a political maverick. Business interests and entrepreneurial instincts attracted him to railway and banking ventures as early as the 1830s. Individualist and eccentric though he was, John Prince was still very much a man of his age." Minor wear at corners.

"(The author provides atmosphere and reality to this history) by focusing attention upon the people and the everyday happenings at the Fortress of Louisbourg and gives a colorful re-creation of land and sea battles. Downey describes this vital bastion as 'The strongest fortress in America, a walled city without a peer in the New World'. Louisbourg was guardian of the approaches to the S t . L awrence River, gateway to the heart of French Canada, and the key to a continent. In North America, the grasp of France was beginning to loosen. Its territories were shrinking, due to England's relentless drive. But total possession was im po ss i bl e so long as the great fortress Louisbourg stood fast. Then in 1744, war was declared between France and England and General William Pepperrell and American Colonial troops with the English navy laid siege to Louisbourg which fell in 174 5. En gl and 's possession lasted only three years, as Louisbourg was restored to the French by the Treaty of Aix la-Chapelle. The Seven Years War brough still another siege (1758) by the British who defeated the French. When the struggle be t ween th e tw o g reat powers ended, the fort was demolished and its people dispersed." DONITZ AND THE WOLF PACKS., Edwards, Bernard.
54 Edwards, Bernard. DONITZ AND THE WOLF PACKS.
London Brockhampton 1999 1860199275 / 9781860199271 Reprint. Hard Cover Very Good+ Near Fine
240 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "The U-boat, the submarine of the German Navy, was a hidden predator, which would steal up on its prey out of sight beneath the waves. The tactics were much like the wild wolf of the forest, whose grey camouflage would keep it out of sight until it chose to attack. Just as the wolf was even more effective when it roamed in groups, cornering its quarry before catching it, so Admiral Karl Donitz chose to use the grey hulls of his submarines in packs - 'wolf packs'. This simple yet stunningly successful tactic came very close to winning the Battle of the Atlantic and inflicted huge losses of Allied merchant and naval vessels and their crews. With the packs dispersing after an attack as quickly as they had gathered for it, defence against the strategy was fraught with difficulty and only the U-boats' inability to wage their warfare without surfacing gave the Allies a chance of fighting back. In this empathetic and deeply researched volume, (the author) delves beneath the myths and legends of submarinal action and convoy protection to discuss the realities of wolf pack deployment. He explains what caused Donitz to employ the plan and how close his scheme came to destroying Allied resistance. It is an account of a remarkable naval tactic, cunningly used with great brutality by men who themselves withstood awesome deprivation, securing the adulation of their nation." Edge crease at top corner of last two pages, minor rubbing. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling.

239 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs, reproductions, maps. "In 1872, Irish-born, seventeen-year-old Henry Ross Halpin arrived in Fort Garry, Manitoba, to take up a position with the Hudson's Bay Company. His career took him from the shores of Hudson Bay, across the plains, and to the headwaters of the Mackenzie River. Throughout his life, he immersed himself in learning the traditions and culture of Canada's Native Peoples and ultimately became an Indian agent. At his death in 1930, he was described as 'one of the best acquainted with Indian tradition and legend in the west'. Halpin was catapulted onto the historical stage in 1885, being captured by rebel Cree and serving as a secretary/negotiator for Big Bear, the non-rebel Cree chief at the siege of Fort Pitt. Born into a family of journalists, he was a great storyteller and astute observer. His memoirs of his life in the fur trade and of his captivity, combined with his correspondence and annual reports to the Department of Indian Affairs, offer a rare glimpse of life during these turbulent times of change in the West."
