THE WOMAN IN FASHION., Moore, Doris Langley.
46 Moore, Doris Langley. THE WOMAN IN FASHION.
London B. T. Batsford 1949 First Edition Hard Cover Good- Fair Felix Fonteyn, photographer.
184 pp, 10" H. B&w photographs, colour fronispiece shows Vanessa Redgrave in pink tafetta dress. "(The author) possesses what is probably the finest private collection of English clothing of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and she is also well known as an authority on the history and psychology of dress. (This book) makes use both of her collection and her expert knowledge, and in a particularly delightful way. The dresses have been photographed by Felix Fonteyn, as they were at the time when they were first made: that is, they are shown on living models and in appropriate settings. Set off by such interesting and distinguished women as Vivien Leigh, Ruth Draper, Margot Fonteyn, Moira Shearer, Beatrice Lillie, Googie Withers, Mai Zetterling, and many others well known on the stage, the films, and in similar spheres, the costumes (of c.1800 to 1926) 'come alive' in a way previously unknown either through old fashion plates or in the ordinary histories of costume. (Moore's) text is no less vivid and revealing than her illustrations. She enjoys the great advantage of writing as a woman, with a more than theoretical experience of feminine dress; and she shows herself to be an author of quite exceptional insight, sympathy, and expertise." Light browning to endpapers - small stain on rear pastedown, soft bump to top corner of pages, small bump at top corner of boards, light wrinkling at bottom of spine, scattered small areas of color fading on front board and on edges of boards, very small liquid stain on front board. 50 Newcomb, Rexford. OLD KENTUCKY ARCHITECTURE. COLONIAL, FEDERAL, GREEK REVIVAL, GOTHIC, AND OTHER TYPES ERECTED PRIOR TO THE WAR BETWEEN THE STATES.
Bonanza, New York, reprint (copyright 1940).
Unpaginated foreword, introductory essay and list of plates plus 130 b&w plates (photographs, plans, drawings) and frontispiece, 4to (12 1/8" H, hard cover in dust jacket. "Forming originally a part of the state of Virginia, Kentucky was peopled la rgely from Virginia and nearby colonies; thus the economic system, the social fabric and the cultural outlook of Kentucky resembles these features of life in the Old Dominion. Bringing with them a love of classic architecture engendered by as s o c i a t ion with the great houses in the valleys of the James and the Potomac, it is no surprise to discover that a definite classic spirit premeates the more formal types of architecture in Kentucky. In the early pioneer period, of necessity, r ec ou rs e wa s had to primitive forms. Beginning with the log cabin with its 'wattle-and-daub' chimney, architectural expression in Kentucky passed through successive improvements, culminating eventually in the great classic-porticoed brick mansio ns whi ch to th is day lend so much charm to the countryside. Architecture in Kentucky parallels the career of architecture upon our Atlantic seaboard. There is this difference, however, that while architecture in Kentucky reflects most of the v ogu es a nd fas hion s o f the seaboard forms, it records these changes somewhat belatedly. That is to say a style or a fashion well known in the maritime states will often not make its appearance in Kentucky for from ten to thirty years. Once acc lima ted, how ever , suc h vo gues are as likely to persist here as in other areas of America." 576 pp, small 4to (10" H). B&w drawings, maps. "David Nicolle, in this second volume of his comprehensive study of military weapons and equipment at the time of the Crusades, examines the arms and armour actually used by Muslim, Orthodox Christian and Mongol armies. Emphasising the evolution of military technology, fashion and science during a period of tumult and change, this definitive study throws light on Eastern Europe and Asia as old empires decayed and the new powers emerged. (It) examines the key elements of arms and equipment for each specific power or ethnic group. Conclusions are then linked to hundreds of superbly detailed line drawings based on archaeological evidence, iconography and contemporary accounts. With chapters on Byzantium and its military decline, Armenia, the growing might of the lands of the Rus, the Eastern Balkans, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Arabia, the Mongol Hordes, as well as China and India, this is an essential study of major and minor powers and their contribution to warfare during the Crusades." 202 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, reproductions."(A) lighthearted but true-to-life account of Canadian home front living during the war years. When teenaged boys put on uniforms and sailed, flew, and marched off to fight in the Second World War, the teenaged girls they left behind them were in uniform too: a Sloppy Joe sweater, a string of pearls, skirt, bobbysox, and saddleshoes. Meet Mary, one of those girls in a Sloppy Joe sweater; her best friend Cath, and their friends; and follow their fortunes through these six significant years in history that paralleled six of the most formative years of their lives. Through Mary you will learn what they were like; how they passed their time as they waited for the boys to come home; their code of manners and mores; what they talked about at their 'hen parties'; the music and radio programs they listened to; the movies they watched; the books and magazines they read; their fashion 'fads'; their humour; and their contribution to the 'war effort'. Accented by newspaper clippings of the time, the reader gets a chronological review of home and war front news. These vignettes of history reflect the reality of life and death of never to be forgotten days and when juxtaposed with the author's highly entertaining text, the whole forms a record of the times as none other has." 56 Phillpotts, Eden. CONNIE WOODLAND.
Hutchinson, London, 1956, first edition.
240 pp, small 8vo (7 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "In one love Connie is unshakeable: that which she feels for the wild countryside of Dartmoor. But when it comes to the young men in her life she is less decided. There is much to be said f or either - for the attractive young master carpenter, Robert Fontaine, of romantic French extraction, and for George Redvers, the honest young labourer, as simple-minded as herself. And if Robert shows less than respect for the country whi c h i s s o dear to Connie, it is true also that George likes to shoot the wild creatures she loves. But it is more momentous matters than these which force Connie to make her choice, and in doing so, to act against her true heart. In this stor y of We st Co un try life the problems of various characters are at least resolved when, with the coming of the 1914 war, each in his own fashion finds that he can serve his fellows. In its wisdom, its wit, and its warmheartedness it is typical o f its aut hor . E den Phillpotts is a veteran storyteller still without rivals in the telling of a country tale." Kew, Richmond National Archives 2004 190336552X / 9781903365526 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
190 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, maps, tables. "Surnames have long provided key links in historical research. This ground-breaking work shows that English christian names are also significant for those researching local communities and family history - and that they are a fascinating topic in their own right. Did you know, for instance, that the names Philip and Thomas were once used for girls? Or that there was a woman called Diot Coke in 1379? When George Redmonds became intrested in christian names, he found that information on his own name in dictionaries was contradicted by local records - and that the standard works' emphasis on etymology only give part of the story. Half a lifetime's research has convinced him that every christian name has a 'pedigree', which can be regional, local or even centred on one family. Here he explores the implications of this for both amateur and academic historians. Drawing on examples from Anne to Zaccheus, he covers a wealth of topics including the stabilisation of first names as surnames; the influence of individuals, parents, godparents and communities on naming; the popularity of names over the last 700 years; and more recent changes in naming practice. He challenges many published assumptions - and offers new insights into the customs and attitudes of our ancestors from the Middle Ages to the present day." Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top of front panel.
