202 pp, 8 1/2" H. "(A) collection written by some of the best writers in Canada. These stories tap into the deep fears in us all. A man's sexual fantasy becomes a frightening, hallucinatory embrace of what seems to him the ghost of his dead wife / While living an apparently 'normal' life, a man descends into a personal hell cohabited by monsters and outcasts / A blackly humorous story of teenage rebellion is also a tale of abandonment and family dysfunction. The stories in this anthology may cause sleepless nights, bad dreams and general unease. You've been warned. Welcome to the Nightmare." 668 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "The OPP came into existence (in 1909) with a total strength of fifty-one men, of whom forty-four were constables deployed across the vast province. By the end of World War I in 1918, only twenty-six constables were still serving with the force, but returning veterans were sought for enlistment with the provincials and the force grew, assuming every-increasing responsibilities for policing the province. Liquor law enforcement during the rumrunning days of the 1920s, and the creation of a highway patrol in 1930 played major parts in the evolution of the provincial police. The story of the OPP includes tales of murder, sabotage, corruption, and political influences. There were relief expeditions to the north in the wake of devastating forest fires, and confrontations with hoboes, harvesters, and loafers. Violent crimes, jail-breaks, war services, and industrial disputes all had to be contended with, and not a few members of the provincial police were killed in the performance of their duties over the years. 'Hepburn's Private Army' and 'Drew's Gestapo' gave rise to much criticism of the provincials, and embarrassing Royal Commissions did little to enhance the image or the morale of Ontario's finest. Despite the challenges to its continued existence, the OPP has emerged today as one of the finest, best equipped, and most brilliantly led police forces in the world." Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top edge..

331 pp, square large 8vo (9 1/4" H x 9 1/4" D). B&w and colour illustrations. "Osgoode Hall is a national monument and one of Canada's architectural treasures. Of the many public buildings erected in pre-Confederation Canada, it best encapsulates the diverse stylistic forces that shaped public buildings of its era. The gated lawns, the grandly Venetian rotunda, the ornate courtroom, the portrait-lined walls, and the stained-glass windows evoke a venerable dignity to which few Canadian institutions can aspire. It has been the seat of the Law Society of Upper Canada since 1832 and of several of the Superior Courts of the province for almost as long. It has become a symbol of the legal tradition, not only in Ontario, but throughout Canada and beyond." Small gift notation on verso of free front endpaper. New York Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers 1998 0689810881 / 9780689810886 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine David Diaz
256 pp, 11" H. Colour illustrations. "This collection of stories reveals the tumultuous relationship between people and God that started four thousand years ago and continues to this day. It begins with Abraham - who was the first to believe in one God and therefore the first to receive His blessing - and spans over 1,500 years as it explores the lives of his descendants. We meet warriors who dole out God's justice, kings anointed by God, and prophets who preach God's word. We see awesome miracles made by God's hand and incredible accomplishments made in God's name. Master storyteller Eric Kimmel draws upon the Bible and the Midrash to create vivid portrayals of favorite heroes like David, Samson, Deborah, and Elijah and of lesser-known ones like Miriam, Hosea, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel. Their human frailties make the tales enduring and timeless, and Kimmel's modern language makes them accessible and riveting. More than just a collection of Bible stories, (this) is a though-provoking epic that brings past, present, and future together in the ongoing love story between God and humanity." Very tiny bump at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine.

58 Lower, Mark Antony. A DICTIONARY OF SURNAMES.
Ware Wordsworth 1988 1853269166 / 9781853269165 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good- Very Good-
443 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "The origins of words are always a fascination, and the origins of our own names can tell us a great deal of our family history. But the twists and turns of dialect and other influences often obscure the meanings, and a good eye and ear, and a wide knowledge of places, crafts, professions and languages, are needed to unravel many family names. A sense of humour helps, too, and here Mark Antony Lower takes his place in the tradition of observers of linguistic drift and foible such as Dr. Johnson, H.W. Fowler, Eric Partridge and Ernest Gowers. The book is full of fascinating anecdote and detail, and the introductory chapters cover American nomenclature, Scots, Irish and Welsh, and tables of statistical distribution. As for Mr. Lower's engaging style and unstuffy approach, one need only look at his entry for surnames beginning with the letter 'X', where he admits to following the example of a Northern naturalist 'who introduced into his work a chapter entitled 'Concerning Owls in Iceland', the chapter itself consisted of the words, 'There are no Owls in Iceland'. Mark Antony Lower's 'Dictionary of Surnames' is a book of endless delight, full of both scholarship and surprises." Light browning to pages, moderate browning to top and fore-edge of textblock, light edge wear, minor wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling, two 3" creases at top of front panel.

Renfrew, Ontario General Store Publishing 2007 1897113412 / 9781897113417 2nd Printing Soft Cover Near Fine
107 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w and colour illustrations, maps. "Beginning with the dramatic conflicts in the aboriginal communities around Lake Ontario before the coming of the Europeans in the early seventeenth century, followed by two centuries of French exploration and settlement, the city's early history will surprise many Torontonians. Simcoe, the founder of the Village of York in 1793, is often presented as a great administrator and military leader. In fact he was a poor manager with no attachment to Canada, and a vigorous advocate of English snobbery and class distinction. His chief concern was to gain preferment in London and to transplant the values of the British class system to the forest frontier. (This book) makes a plausible case that the real founder of Toronto was William Berczy, a remarkably cultured and determined man who led an expedition of German immigrants to Markham in 1794, and who contributed significantly to the early development of the new settlement. Later chapters focus on the people and events that shaped the early years of a struggling frontier community. One of the stories is about the sinking of the Speedy on Lake Ontario, and how it led to the building of The Grange, today one of Toronto's oldest extant buildings and the birthplace of the Art Gallery of Ontario." 289 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w plates. "She was born Mary Farmar, related to the Duke of Wellington, and grew up a rebel who believed that she was her mother's least favourite child. Like many girls of her background, she married for escape. In the late 1930s, she began a fascination with Heinz Ziegler, a Czech university professor and wartime air gunner; his brother, Paul, later a Benedictine monk, also fell under her spell. At the outbreak of the Second World War she was, as she put it, 'roped into Intelligence', where she worked on breaking codes. MI5 and her rackety life during the Blitz eventually inspired her novels ('Jumping the Queue', 'The Camomile Lawn', 'Not That Sort of Girl', 'A Sensible Life', etc.), many of which were concerned with multiple wartime love affairs. She wrote about the atmosphere of the home front and how the imminence of death loosened inhibitions - her fiction was as sexy and as candid as she was herself. She drew on her eccentric friends and her love of Cornwall and the West Country, while the darkness of her novels was illuminated by a caustic sense of the ridiculous. Her style has been described as arsenic without the old lace. (This) is a remarkable book about a woman who was courageous, sensual, talented and ruthless. Readers will enjoy her story not only for its witty anecdotes and devastating one-liners, but also for the intimate portrait it builds of a multi-layered personality in which much was hidden." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, previous owner's place, date and signature on half-title page; light browning to edges of text block.
