43 Donegan, Rosemary. Introduction by Rick Salutin. SPADINA AVENUE
Vancouver Douglas & McIntyre 1985 0888944721 / 9780888944726 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
192 pp, 11 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "Spadina has been the starting point for wave after wave of new Canadian immigrants. Once the main focus for Jewish culture and life in Toronto, the street became a centre of commerce and saw intense political activity during the thirties and forties. Now the Jewish garment factories overlook bustling Chinese sidewalk markets. Greek cafes jostle with delicatessens and Szechuan restaurants. Contemporary art and music thrive amidst this colourful ethnic diversity. Studios and alternative galleries crowd abandoned warehouse space above street level, and all along the street, such classic watering holes as Grossman's, the El Macombo, the Paramount and the Silver Dollar dispense entertainment for tastes that run from black and new wave music to strippers. (This book) presents a collection of photographs and related texts ranging from the years when the street was a tree-lined boulevard, right through to today, when the Queen Street art scene and a rapidly expanding Chinatown are transforming Spadina. Drawing on his own Jewish roots and family history, Rick Salutin provides a very personal introduction that demonstrates how and why Spadina is unique, why it has become so important to those whose lives it has intersected. Organized to reflect and even recreate the Spadina experience, (it) takes the reader up the street starting at the lakeshore and ending at Bloor Street." Very tiny bump at top corner of both boards, small slight bump at top of rear hinge. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of spine and flap-folds.

45 Dyhouse, Carol. GIRLS GROWING UP IN LATE VICTORIAN AND EDWARDIAN ENGLAND.
Routledge & Kegan Paul, London, 1981, first edition.
224 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 071000821X "Girls learn about 'femininity' from childhood onwards, first through their relationships with the family, and later from their teachers and peers. Using sources which vary from diaries to Inspector's reports, Carol Dyhouse studies the socialization of middle- and working-class girls in late-Victorian and early-Edwardian England. She traces the ways in which schooling at all social levels at this time tended to r e i n f o r c e lessons in the sexual division of labour and patterns of authority between men and women, which girls had already learned at home. In Elementary Schools, social anxieties about 'National Efficiency', high infant-mortality figures a nd a d ec li ni ng b i rth-rate helped to shape the curriculum offered to working-class girls through the period 1870-1920. The author then focuses on the emergence of a social psychology of adolescent girlhood in the early-twentieth century wit h i ts edu cat ion al imp lic at ions. Finally, she examines the relationship between feminism and girls' education through the period studied." Small faint area of soiling on fornt board. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bott om o f s pine and fla p-f olds , fa din g to spine color - lettering very legible, blank label on front flap, minor rubbing. John Erskine (1879-1951) taught at Columbia University from 1909-1937 and used it as the background for this novel about "the 'new' younger generation", which was made into a film in the year it was published. "What happens when you're a freshman and you want to marry the loveliest girl in the world (also a freshman) but have only $4.21 to last out the month? What Alec does is to take Mimi to breakfast - and put off the wedding for the next check from home. But in time the checks from home stop coming. Alec discovers there is a personal depression. He must pay his way through. By unanimous protest of his fraternity, he is forced to give up the saxophone and he takes on dishwashing for a livelihood. While a substitute waiter he suffers a terrible blow to his pride. Gladys, the college widow, 1934 model, gets him in an awful jam. Tragedy touches him closely in disasters nobly borne by student and faculty friends. Gradually a courage shows through that is more than youthful rebellion, a fineness that is not cocksure. Alec begins to grow up." 50 Evans, A. Margaret and Barker, C.A.V. CENTURY ONE: A HISTORY OF THE ONTARIO VETERINARY ASSOCIATION, 1874-1974.
Guelph, Ontario Self-published 1976 0969069000 Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
516 pp, 9 1/4" H. Pictorial endpapers, b&w photographs. "Few people appreciate the significant contribution made by veterinarians to the economic importance of the livestock industry, the quality of small animals and the control of diseases affecting public health throughout Canada. The increasing value of such work is largely due to the efforts of the profession itself, particularly in the province of Ontario. Human survival still depends on animals and animal products. To that close relationship the veterinarian brings the benefits of modern science; his professional skill and integrity today defend the economic and physical well-being of all citizens. In a fast-flowing but detailed narrative, the authors review the early years of the O.V.A., its emphasis on high ethical and scientific standards and a long struggle for adequate statutory recognition. These advances have been closely linked to the remarkable role of the Ontario Veterinary College throughout the century. The book also traces the rise of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association to its position of national influence. In Canada, the profession is unique in that close collaboration with all levels of government is constantly required. The control and suppression of rabies is only one example - perhaps the best know to the public." Dust jacket has tiny tear/wrinkling at top of front hinge - archivally taped, minor soiling.

55 Firth, Edith G., edited and with introduction by. THE TOWN OF YORK 1793-1815: A COLLECTION OF DOCUMENTS OF EARLY TORONTO.
Toronto Champlain Society for Government of Canada/University of Toronto Press 1966 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
381 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Red cloth with gold lettering/banding on spine. B&w illustrations (1 colour), fold-out map. "The period covered by this book is one of the most important in the history of Toronto. It begins in February, 1815, when news of the end of the War of 1812 reached York, and ends on March 6, 1834, when Toronto became the first incorporated city in Ontario. During this time it had changed from a small, undistinguished village, whose main reason for being was that it was the capital of Upper Canada, to a booming city. Immigration increased the population fourteen-fold, and gave to Toronto the strongly British attitudes it was to maintain for more than a century. Individuals acting alone could no longer accomplish what was needed by the burgeoning community, and the citizens of York combined to provide a more or less efficient system for coping with their problems. Towards the end of the period political animus and the outbreak of cholera complicated its smooth functioning, but nevertheless the prototypes of many of Toronto's present institutions were established at this time." Two faint 1" surface paper scratches/scuffs at top corner of pages xlii & xliii. Dust jacket has very rubbing, very light edge wear at top/bottom of flap-folds.

189 pp, 8vo (9" H). B&w reproductions, maps. "Francis Simcoe was the eldest son of John Graves Simcoe and Elizabeth Gwillim. Letters written by his mother, sisters, and himself reveal his childhood at Eton. At sixteen, he was an ensign in the 27th Inniskilling Regiment. From the beginning of his military career, he kept journals and wrote many letters preserved by the family. His service began in Ireland and ended under Wellington - he died leading a storming party in the Trinidad breach of Badajoz, Spain, a thoroughly bloody, costly battle in the Peninsular war. The army lost a talented young officer. As a warrior, Francis possessed the qualities that had carried his father from ensign to lieutant general. Letters and journals disclose a soldier who was also an intelligent, loving human being. Of special interest are Francis' associates who spent time in Canada - the Duke of Richmond, Edward Littlehales, James Kempt, and Julia Somerville (more than a friend?) who became Mrs. Franics Bond Head four years after young Simcoe's death."
