PROVENCE, 1970: M.F.K. FISHER, JULIA CHILD, JAMES BEARD, AND THE REINVENTION OF AMERICAN TASTE., Barr, Luke.
42 Barr, Luke. PROVENCE, 1970: M.F.K. FISHER, JULIA CHILD, JAMES BEARD, AND THE REINVENTION OF AMERICAN TASTE.
New York Clarkson Potter 2013 0307718344 / 9780307718341 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
309 pp, 8 1/2" H. "In the winter of (1970), more or less coincidentally, six iconic culinary figures, including Julia Child, James Beard, and M.F.K. Fisher, found themselves together in the South of France. They cooked and ate and talked late into the night about the future of food in America, the meaning of taste, and the limits of snobbery. The pioneering food writer M.F.K. Fisher had arrived on an ocean liner, traveling in grand style. The already iconic Julia Child, star of the television show 'The French Chef', was returning to her vacation home, La Pitchoune, wondering just how 'French' she wanted to be. Simone Beck, Child's coauthor of the seminal 'Mastering the Art of French Cooking', was there, too, at her family's estate. James Beard, meanwhile, was working on his most ambitious book, 'American Cookery', while enrolled at a nearby diet clinic. And the reclusive chef Richard Olney, whose first book, 'The French Menu Cookbook', had just been published, was living in Provence and pointing the way to a new kind of culinary bohemianism. Here were America's leading voices in the food world - joined by renowned cookbook editor Judith Jones - all converging in Provence, and yet, incredibly, some were meeting for the first time. Drawing in large part on M.F.K. Fisher's detailed journals and letters, her grandnephew has re-created what is in retrospect a pivotal moment - when the democratization of cooking and taste became part of the national conversation in America. His dramatic retelling of those few weeks in the hills above the Cote d'Azur conjurs conversations and meals, arguments and unspoken rivalries." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, several very small dents on bottom edge of boards. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, patches of very light browning, a few very small light stins on fron panel, faint liquid mark at top 2" of front flap fold.

43 Barris, Ted. BEHIND THE GLORY.
Toronto Macmillan Canada 1992 0771591764 / 9780771591761 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good
358 pp, 9 1/4" H. Map endpapers, "When war broke out in September 1939, the Allied air forces had few combat aircraft and even fewer military pilots ready to fight. It was clear that air superiority would determine the outcome of the war, so in December 1939, Britain, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada created the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. Most of the air crew training took place in Canada. The success of the plan depended on its instructors. At the beginning of the war bush pilots, barnstormers, commercial pilots, crop-dusters, amateur aviators, and First World War veterans were called up to begin the huge task of training. Most of their students went to the front, but some were kept in Canada to instruct the next generation of recruits. At its peak, the plan administered 107 schools and 184 other units at 231 sites across Canada, operated 11,000 aircraft, and employed 104,000 men and women. The BCATP trained 200,000 air crew in less than five years. FDR and Winston Churchill called their work 'the decisive factor' in the war." Book is Near Fine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, two corner creases on front flap.

160 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "Why did the airship R101 crash on her voyage to India? How did the great Australian pioneer aviatior, Charles Kingsford-Smith, leave such a trail of death behind him when he disappared in 'Lady Southern Cross' in 1935? How did the pilots of the Fairey Postal Mono-plane in 1929 know that they were going to die? Why did so many of the first women who tried to emulate Lindbergh's solo flight across the Atlantic disappear in mysterious circumstances? What was the jinx that befell Stratocruiser propellers in the 1950s, and was it a coincidence that two Stratocruiser captains met in mid-Atlantic on Christmas Day 1957? What was the strange link between the Comet take-off accidents and the Comets that exploded in mid-air? Many flying mysteries of the past have since been explained by the advance of technology, but many remain, particularly those connected to time, coincidence and precognition of events. None of the aircraft disasters described in this book, which have taken place this century in uncertain and even mysterious circumstances, have ever been fully eplained." THE HIGH WORLD., Bemelmans, Ludwig.
53 Bemelmans, Ludwig. THE HIGH WORLD.
New York Harper & Brothers 1954 Hard Cover Very Good - Good- Ludwig Bemelmans.
113 pp, 9 1/4" H. Orange/brown cloth with white lettering on spine, blue illustration on front board. Blue & white pictorial endpapers, b&w drawings, colour plates. By the author/illustrator of the Madeline books. "High in the mountains of the Austrian Tyrol lived the Amrainer family. They lived in a cabin wedged in among the boulders, and their life was simple and happy. But one day the Amrainers' peaceful existence was disrupted. They had gone down to the little village to spend Christmas with their relatives, the Maybocks, who kept the inn - but as the two families were sitting down to enjoy their goose dinner, an imposing-looking gentleman arrived and began demanding their attention and ordering them about. Before many days the Amrainers learned why the official had come to the little village and they realized that his mission would destroy the tranquillity of their lives. It took a near catastrophe to make the Oberministerialrat change, but change for the better he did - his heart became warm and even the expression on his face changed - and once a man starts to have love for his fellow creatures and does good, he can but continue to do so." "The incidents revolving around the avalanche in (this book) are true and are based on an account of it told to Mr. Bemelmans by an officer of the Tyrolean Gendarmerie who took part in the rescue." 56 Bergstein, Rachelle. WOMEN FROM THE ANKLE DOWN: THE STORY OF SHOES AND HOW THEY DEFINE US.
New York Harper 2012 0061969613 / 9780061969614 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Nami Matsuo Scott.
284 pp, 9 1/4" H. Small b&w illustrations. "What is it about a pair of shoes that so enchants women of all ages, demographics, political affiliations, and style tribes? Part social history, part fashion record, part pop-culture celebration, (this book) seeks to answer that question as it unfolds the story of shoes in the twentieth century. The tale begins in the rural village of Bonito, Italy, with a visionary young shoe-maker named Salvatore Ferragamo and ends in New York City with a fictional socialite and trend-setter named Carrie Bradshaw. Along the way it stops in Hollywood, where Judy Garland first slipped on her ruby slippers; New Jersey, where Nancy Sinatra heard something special in a song about boots; and the streets of Manhattan, where a transit-worker strike propelled women to step into cutting-edge athletic shoes. Beginnng with the well-heeled suffragettes in the 1910s, women have fought for greater freedom and mobility, a struggle that exploded in the 1960s with the women's liberation move-ment and culminated in the new millenium with our devotion to personal choice. Featuring interviews with designers, historians, and cultural experts, and a cast of real-life characters, from Marilyn Monroe to Jane Fonda, from Gwen Stefani to Manolo Blahnik, (it) is a lively, compelling look at the evolution of modern woman and the fashion that reflects - and has shaped - their lives." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine - also tiny tear at top of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top of hinges, minor rubbing.

" To America's leaders in 1812, an invasion of Canada seemed the best way to bloody John Bull's nose. It would, as Thomas Jefferson confidently predicted, be 'a mere matter of marching'. How could a nation of eight million fail to subdue a struggling colony of 300,000? Yet, when the campaign of 1812 ended on the bloody banks of the River Raisin, the only Americans left on Canadian soil were prisoners of war. Three American armies had been forced to surrender, and the British were in control of all of Michigan Territory and much of Indiana and Ohio. Drawing on personal memoirs and diaries as well as official dispatches, the author has been able to get inside the characters of the men who fought the war - the common soldier as well as the generals. (C)owards and heroes, flawed generals and bumbling bureaucrats, traitors, loyalists, war profiteers, military incompetents and geniuses. (T)he War of 1812, or more properly the myth of the war, served to give the new settlers (of Upper Canada) a sense of community and set them on a different course from that of their neighbours. The Canadian way of life, says Berton, has its roots in the invasion of Canada." Tiny area of glue residue at the edge of the rear board leather. Slipcase has a tiny edge scuff on rear panel, a few very small minor soiling marks on front panel.
