Robert Hale, London, 1991, first edition.
202 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0709046049 "The ward settles down for a quiet night. A serene, starched nurse soothes the brow of a grateful patient as the lamplight flickers. Bleep! Cardiac arrest! The crash team lea ps into action, skidding along the corridors, etiquette abandoned in the vital race against time. It is in these frantic seconds that a sister, weighing her responsibilities and priorities, must make efficient, professional decisions - deci s i o n s w h ich could mean the difference between life and death. In her autobiography, Joan Ash contrasts her wartime nursing experiences in India with the National Health Service as she found it on her return in 1973. She shows us the day-to- da y fr us tr a ti on s and joys of nursing, the individuals that people the wards, and the resilient dedication of these latter-day Florence Nightingales." book slightly cocked. Maura and Patrick O'Connell, fifteen- and twelve-year-old Irish peasants, seek to escape a country destroyed by famine and the greed of English landlords. Their emigration is a search for life itself. For Sir Laurence Kirkle, eleven and son of one such English lord, America holds the promise of justice, though he steal s a f o r tune from his fath er to get there. Colorful characters, young and old, pop up everywhere - Mr. Pickler, investigator, actor Horatio Drabble, and Fred No-name and Sergeant Rumpkin of the Lime Street Runners Association. And there are Mr . C le m sp oo l and Toby Grout, the Reverend Bartholomew, Ralph Toggs and the vile Mrs. Sonderbye. Are they helping the children or stealing from them? For Maura, Patrick and Laurence,it is often hard to know until it's too late. Indeed, how th e O' Con ne lls an d young Laurence come to share a common fate in the English city of Liverpool - embarkation port for America - makes for an adventure alive with ironic coincidence and surprise. Inspired by the Victorian novels published in seri al fo rm, whi ch w ith ev ery installment pres ented new and diverting answers to the question 'What will happen next?', (this book) offers more twists and turns of story than a nineteenth-century back alley. (The first volume) ends on a spectacul ar clif f-ha nger . Mo re s usp enseful fun awaits in 'Book Two: Lord Kirkle's Money'." Fine/Fine

"In German-occupied France in 1940, only a few people refused to give up the great ideals of their country - liberty, equality, and fraternity. O ne of these was Raoul Laporterie. Starting right after the fall of France, he supplied false documents, money, transport, and shelter to more than 1,600 people. Those rescued were chiefly Sephardic Jews of Bordeaux, but also included a co v e y o f n uns, some French soldiers evading prison camps, and Allied flyers fleeing captivity. He was assisted by his wife, Laure, and his daughter, Irene, his employees in his clothing stores, and all the residents of the village of Bascons, ne ar t h e bo r de r between Occupied and Vichy France, where he was mayor. Risking death daily, Laporterie managed to outmaneuver and fool the Germans repeatedly. A true Christian, he loved others regardless of the consequences. Today, at ag e 9 4, he ha s rec ei ved m a ny honours from the governments of France and Israel. This is his dramatic story." Minor edge wear, minor browning on bottom front edge. 52 Bahat, Dan. With Chaim T. Rubinstein. Introduction by Eric Meyers. Translated by Shlomo Ketko. THE ILLUSTRATED ATLAS OF JERUSALEM.
Simon and Schuster, New York, 1990.
152 pp, 4to (11 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0134516427 "Lavishly illustrated with more than 400 color illustrations, the Atlas looks at the history of Jerusalem with maps, drawings, and isometric reconstructions, all updated with the latest archaeological evidence. Jerusalem is perhaps the most interesting city on earth. Sacred to Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike, it dates back to at least the third millenium BCE. David made it his capital; Solomon glorified it with his Te mple; it fell to Babylonia in 586 BCE and was rebuilt by Ezra and Nehemiah; it was the city of the Maccabees and of the Herods, and the place where Jesus was tried and crucified. Titus razed its buildings and destroyed the Temple in 70 CE. A f t e r t he revolt of Bar Kochba, the Romans made Jerusalem a pagan shrine. Jerusalem fell to the Crusaders in 1099; in 1187, Muslims, led by Saladin, captured the city and held it almost continuously until the British took control after World Wa r I. Th e B ritish Mandate ended in 1948 when the State of Israel was born. In 1967, Israel reunited the city. Special features in the Atlas include: concise, easy-to-read text; four-color illustrations, maps, drawings, and photos throughout ; de fi nit i ve an d a uthoritative information; selected bibliography of further readings; thorough index; an up-to-date approach, based on the latest findings. For anyone interested in biblical archaeology; geography; Jewish studies, culture, an d his tor y; a nd th e h isto ry and culture of the Middle East, (this book) is certain to be an invaluable resource." Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1998, reprint.
312 pp, 8vo (8 3/8" H), soft cover. ISBN 0521457270 "On 18 March 1314, Jacques de Molay, Grand Master of the Templars, was burned at the stake. For almost two centuries the knights of the Order of the Temple had flourished during the Crusades in Palestine and Syria, and in the West, notably in France. But in 1307, the Templars in France were arrested by King Philip IV's officials in the name of the Inquisition, their property seized and the men charged with serious heresies, including the denial of Christ, homosexuality, and idol worship. Confessions, extracted under torture, were brought before royal and papal tribunals, but in 1310 a number of Templar brothers mounted a defence of their Order, refuelling the controveries which cont inued for a further four years before the final executions. Malcolm Barber's fascinating account, assessing the charges brought against the Order, once again puts the Templars on trial." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownersh i p m a r k s . Exterior - clean and bright.
