42 Black, M.H. Foreword by Geoffrey Cass. CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS, 1584-1984.
Cambridge Cambridge University Press 1984 0521264731 / 9780521264730 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
343 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "In 1984 the Press celebrates four hundred years of continuous printing and publishing, and this history gives a readable and not-too-formal introduction to that unique record. It is the story of the development of the printing and publishing arm of the University of Cambridge, from the medieval system of resident stationers who dealt in manuscripts to the present large printing and publishing house which produces computer software and audio cassette tapes as well as books (mostly now computer-set). The narrative is given its proper setting in the development of the University, which has inevitably determined the history of the Press itself; in the history of the book trade as a whole; and in the intellectual and political history of England which has at times affected the fortunes of the Press. There are anecdotes about powerful personalities, from Richard Bentley to Stanley Morison, which give colour and life to the sober black-and-white history of printing and publishing." Previous owner's name label tipped-in on half-title page, very light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, some light browning on spine, small ghost sticker mark on rear flap.

THE BOY AND THE RIVER. OXFORD CHILDREN'S LIBRARY NO. 46., Bosco, Henri. Translated by Gerard Hopkins.
50 Bosco, Henri. Translated by Gerard Hopkins. THE BOY AND THE RIVER. OXFORD CHILDREN'S LIBRARY NO. 46.
London Oxford University Press 1967 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Lynton Lamb.
119 pp, small 8vo (7 7/8" H). The first edition of this title in the Oxford Children's Library series. B&w illustrations by Lynton Lamb, dust jacket design by Glenys Ambrus. Originally published under the title: "L'Enfant et la Riviere". "This is the story of Pascalet and the river that at first filled him with fear and curiosity and later, when he knew it better, became his friend. It ran beyond the flat French fields that surrounded his home, and though he was forbidden to go to the river, once or twice every year the river came to him. It came when the flood waters ran swiftly over the low fields almost to Pascalet's door; but it came more urgently and mysteriously in the shape of Bargabot, the poacher, whose tempting talk of the joys that awaited those who ventured down to the water's edge filled Pascalet with a longing to escape from the monotony of his quiet home and seek for himself the magic beyond the fields. One fine spring day Pascalet's chance came to explore the river. He found there all the dangers his parents had warned him against, and many beautiful things beside, but chief among all he found Gatzo - a boy of his own age - and together they launched a boat and floated away into a world of enchantment: Pascalet dreaming and fearful, Gatzo sharp and practical and brave." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, one tiny corner bump. Dust jacket has minor wear and light edge wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds. Dust jacket is in the original publisher's removable plastic sleeve.

427 pp, 8vo (9 1/4" H). "Through war, depression, and social upheaval, the first half of the twentieth century was a period of unprecedented turbulence in Canada. In this lively and perhaps contentious survey, (the authors) explore the political and economic forces that shaped this era of change. Beginning at the turn of the century, they consider the status of Canada in the empire and the world, the burgeoning growth of its economy, and the development of social and labour problems, up to the eruption of war in 1914. They discuss the political currents running through Canada during two wars, the interwar economic boom and depression, and the plans for post-war reconstruction, and assess the impact of these and other events on Canada's political, economic, social, and cultural institutions." Illustrated with political cartoons.

OUR INTELLECTUAL STRENGTH AND WEAKNESS / 'ENGLISH-CANADIAN LITERATURE' / 'FRENCH-CANADIAN LITERATURE., Bourinot, John George; Marquis, Thomas Guthrie; Roy, Camille. Introduction by Clara Thomas.
52 Bourinot, John George; Marquis, Thomas Guthrie; Roy, Camille. Introduction by Clara Thomas. OUR INTELLECTUAL STRENGTH AND WEAKNESS / 'ENGLISH-CANADIAN LITERATURE' / 'FRENCH-CANADIAN LITERATURE.
University of Toronto Press, Toronto, 1973.
489 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H), soft cover. "These three works, displaying marked differences in purpose, tone, and effect, are all classics of Canadian literary and cultural criticism. John George Bourinot was a man of letters, an Imperialist, and a bic ulturalist, who was confident of his knowledge of the Canadian identity and felt it to be his public mission to align reality with his own personal vision. Writing in 1893 to the elite represented by the members of the Royal Society, he d e s c r i b e d h is work as 'a monograph on the intellectual development of the Dominion', describing 'the progress of culture in a country still struggling with the difficulties of the material development of half a continent'. Two decades later , Th om as G ut hr ie Ma rquis and Camille Roy wrote what were, in contrast, specialized assignments, contributions to the compendium history, 'Canada and Its Provinces' (1913). Addressing a far larger audience, and treating a vastly enlarged bod y of Can adi an lit era tur e , t heir work comes much closer to contemporary scholarship, with greater clarity, organization, and sheer bulk of information, but with the loss of some of the charm and assurance of Bourinot's wide sweep. In further co ntr ast to B our inot 's d eter mi ned biculturalism and will to unity, Roy and Marquis' essays display vivid differences in the emotional allegiances and convictions of the founding cultures. Marquis starts by asking the question, 'Has Canada a vo ice of h er ow n in lite ratur e dis tin ct f rom that of England?'; Roy treats French-Canadian literature in its Roman Catholic contexts." Interior - one small dog-ear crease, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - l ight to m oderat e bro wning, light brown ing on sp ine and on rear cover, light browning on top of textblock. Very Good-

In the case of the 37th President of the U n i t e d States of America, Richard Nixon, January 20, 1969 to August 9, 1974, the answer seems clear. 54 Bowler, R. Arthur. LOGISTICS AND THE FAILURE OF THE BRITISH ARMY IN AMERICA, 1775-1783.
Princeton University Press, Princeton, New Jersey, (1975).
290 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "....draws on the remarkably complete records of the British government offices concerned with logistics during the Revolutionary War and army service departments such as commissary, quartermaster and barrackmaster generals to provide a full account of the everyday life of the British army and an accurate record of how logistical and administrative problems in America affected the course of the war. His study makes it clear that the British army in America depended almost entirely on Britain for supplies, and that for six years inadequate and sometimes corrupt administration seriously affected the course of operations and the morale of the troops. An organization capable of supplying the army was not developed until 1781, too late to change the outcome of the war." University of Exeter Press, Exeter, 1993, reprint.
109 pp, 8 1/4" H, soft cover. Map, 2 plans. ISBN 0859892042 "The overseas empire which Rome acquired from the third century BC onwards was perhaps the single most important issue in Roman history thereafter, as the Roman city-state became ever mo re like a world-state. The empire had to be administered. This volume shows how, to a large extent, it came to run itself. In his introduction, David Braund examines the essential framework of the empire as it developed throughout the p e r i o d . H e draws attention to the impact of empire upon Rome itself - an impact that was not only social and economic but also political and ideological. Joyce Reynolds utilises neglected sources - particularly inscriptions - to present an a cc ou nt o f th e r ol e of cities in the life of the empire. W.S. Hanson formulates recent advances in archaeology in his discussion of Roman involvement in the creation of towns in non-urban areas of the western empire, most notably Britain. In the fi nal c hap te r , D avi d Braund presents the results of the latest research on the client kings and queens who bore much of the brunt of empire and who became, from Augustus onwards, ever more a part of the empire, obtaining citizenship and eve n se ats in the Rom an Sen ate by the beginning of the second century AD. A substantial bibliography is appended."
