THE TRUE 'INTREPID': SIR WILLIAM STEPHENSON AND THE UNKNOWN AGENTS., Macdonald, Bill.
381 Macdonald, Bill. THE TRUE 'INTREPID': SIR WILLIAM STEPHENSON AND THE UNKNOWN AGENTS.
Surrey, British Columbia Timberholme 1998 1894254015 / 9781894254014 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
429 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w illustrations. "The true story of Winnipeg born William Stephenson (known as 'Intrepid'), his career, and the secret World War II espionage organization, British Security Coordination, which he established in the heart of New York City. Stephenson staffed BSC with hundreds of Canadians recruited from across the country. Bill Macdonald documents Stephenson's clouded early life and unravels layers of misinformation from previous books and secret papers to reveal the astonishing details of the man who said: 'Nothing deceives like a document'. - Included in this volume are many interviews with former members of BSC: secretaries, cipher clerks, covert operatives and with former BSC agent, British author, Roald Dahl. Of special historic significance are the revelations of the Allies' communications genius, the late Benjamin de Forest Bayly, who had previously never discussed his war work. His electronic wizardry helped guard the Allies' top secrets, and win the Battle of the Atlantic. (This book) weaves its way through deception, treachery, war, espionage and a search for the 'real' James Bond." Slight waviness to edges of text block, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, previous owner's place, date and signature along with small blanked-out notation on title page. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very light rubbing.

383 Macintyre, Donald. THE BATTLE OF THE ATLANTIC. BRITISH BATTLE SERIES.
London B. T. Batsford 1961 First Edition Hard Cover Good+ Good-
208 pp, 8vo (8 15/16" H). "The momentous nature of the Battle of the Atlantic, a struggle whose outcome was in the balance for over three years, cannot be exaggerated. Had the Germans succeeded in establishing a decisive mastery in the Atlantic, Britain would have been deprived of the essential American supplies - above all, arms and food - on which she depended for the continuance of the war abroad and for her own day-to-day survival; nor, later could the Americans have given their vital support. The story of how, instead, the Germans were defeated in the Atlantic, is a complicated and exciting one which Captain Donald Macintyre, a naval historian who himself played an active part in the battle, is well qualified to tell. Not only does he analyse the strategic issues, above all the importance of the convoy system and of continuous air-cover, he also describes the battle from the viewpoint of the participants themselves. The long drawn-out duel between escort and U-boat is made vivid by quotations from the log-books of some of the ablest escort-commanders, such as Captain Walker and Lieutenant-Commander Gretton, and from the combat-reports of the German U-boat 'aces', Prien, Kretschmer and Schepke. Complementing these eyewitness accounts, nearly 50 unfamiliar photographs, drawn from German as well as British sources, make the courage and endurance of all those who fought in the Atlantic the more immediate; the strategic and tactical aspects of the battle are likewise clarified by the specially prepared maps and diagrams." Light to moderate edge wear to boards, very light browning to edges of boards, very small light stain on title page, very soft corner crease on first few pages, light erasure mark on rear pastedown. Dust jacket is price clipped, has light to moderate edge wear - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap folds, a few small scratches and scuffs, a few small edge tears with old tape repair, small waterstain on inside of spine, browning at edges, a few brown stains on inside.

227 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, maps. "(Macksey's) detailed research, in England and in America, into the development of Amphibious Raiding Forces, presents a fascinating and unrevealed insight into the extraordinarily haphazard way in which this form of irregular warfare evolved on both sides of the Atlantic. In the background stand the politicians, who show little consistency of purpose or harmony of intent; nearer the foreground senior officers reveal inter-Service rivalry and no little degree of personal animosity, as much in London as in Washington. Between them, and the brave men to whom this book is a tribute, and whose exploits are retold in their after-action reports, stood innumerable problems which the author examines in detail: inadequate supplies, lack of information about weather, beaches and tides and, most vitally, about the opposition likely to be encountered, which caused many planned raids to be stillborn and many others to end in disaster." Large wrinkle/crease at top corner of front board - board is still sound, very light wrinkling at top/ bottom of spine, remainder dot on bottom of textblock/rear board, minor rubbing and soiling. Dust jacket has Stoddart as publisher's name, has light edge wrinkling, minor edge wear, light rubbing, tiny dint on rear hinge, soft crease at bottom of front hinge.

386 Maclaren, Roy. CANADIANS BEHIND ENEMY LINES, 1939-1945.
University of British Columbia Press, Vancouver, (1981), Ist edition.
330 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "During the Second World War, Canadians found themselves behind enemy lines in Europe and Asia. Many were airmen who had been shot down, but almost one hundred Canadians volunteered to go on hazardous assignments amidst the enemy. Two secret British services requested Canadian volunteers who could pass as natives in an occupied country, and who were ready to risk their lives in assisting local resistance groups in sabotage and ambush or in smuggling Allied airmen out of occupied Europe and Asia. Operating in disguise in France, Italy, Yugoslavia, Hungary, Burma, Malaya, and Sarawak, these Canadians helped to make the brutal and unrelenting warfare of the und erground a potent weapon in the Allied arsenal. Their unique contribution to ultimate victory has seldom been recognized." Light edge to boards, light rubbing, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, spine is light cocked, front board is slightly raised from textblock, scattered tiny foxing marks on top of textblock. Dust jacket has minor edge wear, light edge wrinkling/creasing, light rubbing, very light browning at edge. Good+/Very Good

Toronto Samuel Stevens, Hakkert, 1975 0888665660 / 9780888665669 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
116 pp, large 8vo (9 5/8" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "Canada provided the third largest allied navy in the Second World War. The Royal Canadian Navy, born amidst controversy over its very existence just before the First World War grew from small beginnings with the acquisition of the cruisers Rainbow and Niobe to radical expansion in the 1940's to fight the battle of the Atlantic. The RCN has always been a wartime service: its first submarines were bought, not by Ottawa, but by British Columbia, in the tumultuous days immediately preceding the outbreak of war in 1914. Its last aircraft carrier, the Bonaventure, left commission despite a costly refit as the tensions of the Cold War receded. (This) is the story of the ships of the RCN giving a brief history of their active service and presenting a visual account of Canada's Navy in dramatic pictures of Canada's own ships." Slight browning in margins of pages, light browning to edges of text block, light waviness to top/bottom edges of text block. THE VOLGA RISES IN EUROPE., Malaparte, Curzio. Translated by David Moore.
392 Malaparte, Curzio. Translated by David Moore. THE VOLGA RISES IN EUROPE.
Edinburgh Birlinn 0739419307 / 9780739419304 Book Club Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
281 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "During the summer of 1941, the Italian journalist and novelist Curzio Malaparte was the only front-line war correspondent in the whole of Russia. His account of events there is not unique for this reason alone: his astonishing eye for detail and intimate knowledge of the country lend his record a depth of understanding rarely found in other war reporting, and his attention to the human dimension of the conflict reveals him to be a man of humanity and compassion. In (this book he) provides a peerless illustration of the human dimension of the Eastern Front. His ability to spot details is uncanny; his ability to build upon them to express the horror and absurdity of war is astonishing. Here you get a complete panorama of the front, with views of civilians in their war-ravaged homes; soldiers readying themselves for battle; and graphic descriptions of the most furious combat of WWII. Expelled from the southern war zone on the orders of Goebbels in September 1941, Malaparte spent four months under house arrest before being sent to cover events in Finland. From there he reported the Siege of Leningrad - one of the seminal events played out on the Eastern Front. This dense, all-encompassing, often poetic chronicle leaves you speechless. It's literally one of a kind." Small wrinkle at top of spine, light browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling.

318 pp, 9 3/4" H. B&w photographs, map. "In 1944, when this book begins, Richard Malone had been transferred from the Italian front back to England to take part in the Normandy landings. Trained before the war both as a soldier and a journalist, Malone had been seconded in 1940 from his regiment Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry as Staff Secretary to Col. J.L. Ralston, Canada's Minister of Defence. (Now) poised for D-Day, he held staff appointments at both Canadian Army and British 21st Army Group Headquarters and he was given charge of all Canadian Army Press and Psychological Warfare service in the field. The Canadians accounted for nearly a third of the forces landed on D-Day and Malone's description of the invasion, the battles of Normandy, the liberation of Paris and Brussels make fascinating reading. Also from his unique perspective Malone has much of interest to say about the great controversial issues of the times: Montgomery's leadership, Patton's gap, the rivalry between the British and American high commands, the Battle of the Bulge, Arnheim and the reason for its failure and others. In 1944 when the battle for Europe was clearly won, Malone was chosen to go out to the Pacific and establish relations with General MacArthur. He witnessed the Japanese surrender on the USS Missouri and was the first Canadian in Japan. He was in charge of the liberation of Canadian prisoners in Japan, China and Manchuria. His talks with Churchill, Alanbrooke, Montgomery, MacArthur, Beaverbrook, Ralston and other after the war add to our understanding of the part that Canada played in the Second World War." WILD MARY: THE LIFE OF MARY WESLEY., Marnham, Patrick. (Mary Wesley).

London Chatto & Windus 2006 0701179910 / 9780701179915 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
289 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w plates. "She was born Mary Farmar, related to the Duke of Wellington, and grew up a rebel who believed that she was her mother's least favourite child. Like many girls of her background, she married for escape. In the late 1930s, she began a fascination with Heinz Ziegler, a Czech university professor and wartime air gunner; his brother, Paul, later a Benedictine monk, also fell under her spell. At the outbreak of the Second World War she was, as she put it, 'roped into Intelligence', where she worked on breaking codes. MI5 and her rackety life during the Blitz eventually inspired her novels ('Jumping the Queue', 'The Camomile Lawn', 'Not That Sort of Girl', 'A Sensible Life', etc.), many of which were concerned with multiple wartime love affairs. She wrote about the atmosphere of the home front and how the imminence of death loosened inhibitions - her fiction was as sexy and as candid as she was herself. She drew on her eccentric friends and her love of Cornwall and the West Country, while the darkness of her novels was illuminated by a caustic sense of the ridiculous. Her style has been described as arsenic without the old lace. (This) is a remarkable book about a woman who was courageous, sensual, talented and ruthless. Readers will enjoy her story not only for its witty anecdotes and devastating one-liners, but also for the intimate portrait it builds of a multi-layered personality in which much was hidden." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, previous owner's place, date and signature on half-title page; light browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has light wrinkling and wear at top.bottom of spine and flap-folds, some edge wrinkling - mainly along top edge.

OVER TO TUNIS: THE COMPLETE STORY OF THE NORTH AFRICAN CAMPAIGN., Marshall, Howard.
397 Marshall, Howard. OVER TO TUNIS: THE COMPLETE STORY OF THE NORTH AFRICAN CAMPAIGN.
London Eyre & Spottiswoode 1943 First Edition Hard Cover Good Fair Maps by L. Potter.
168 pp, 8 3/4" H. Map endpapers + 14 additional b&w maps. "It was Howard Marshall's job to broadcast the Tunisian campaign to the world. No other eye-witness not an actual protagonist has so complete a knowledge of the facts, and in this book he is able to give what could obviously not be given in a broadcast commentary - a balanced, comprehensive and outspoken account of both the military and political sides. The book opens with the first landings in November, 1942, and the failure of the first bid for Tunis. It then traces the development of the small original landing force into a magnificent army, and moves in a crescendo towards the final pulverising attack. The author analyses the reasons for the Allied success and the lessons to be derived from it. He deals at length with the political situation: the plots and counterplots of French political parties; the appointment and assassination of Darlan; the problems of General Giraud's administration; the whole confused background of intrigue and conspiracy in Algiers. The author also discusses the problems of broadcasting from a theatre of war, and describes the special complications of the work of a radio reporter." Some tiny light foxing marks on endpapers, darkening and three scratch marks to top of text block, light browning to edges of text block, book is slightly cocked, small bump to top edge of boards, minor soiling, small light stain on spine. Dust jacket has soiling, large piece missing from top of spine and part of rear panel, several small edge chips and tears, small piece missing from middle of spine, light edge wrinkling, moderate edge wear on spine.
