Patrick Stephens, Cambridge, 1976, first edition.

"The thrilling story of night fighters and night fighter operations from World War 1 to the present day, has never before been told. Thi s dramatic book, which will appeal to the interested layman as well as the serious aviation historian, relates the problems underlying the development of effective airborne radars; of specialised night fighting aircraft such as the famous Mosqui t o a nd Ju 88; of night fighting tactics and of specialised weapons. Although technically detailed, it is also a vivid narrative which really puts the reader 'into the cockpit' and conveys all the confusion and downright terror of aerial combat i n th e d ark." SPITFIRE SQUADRON. STORIES OF THE SPITFIRE PILOTS OF WORLD WAR II., Guthrie, David, editor.
382 Guthrie, David, editor. SPITFIRE SQUADRON. STORIES OF THE SPITFIRE PILOTS OF WORLD WAR II.
Robert Hale, London, 1978, reprint.
160 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0709167334 "These are the stories of the young men who flew the Spitfires of World War II. Written in spare moments between missions, they are first-hand accounts telling of the mingled fear and exhilaration of the dog-fight, the strain of waiting and the sudden frenzy of action at the 'scramble' signal; accounts full of audacity and innocence, courage and wry humour. The writers were not famous heroes, there were thousands l i k e t h e m with similar tales to tell. But these are the stories of Matthew, Derek and the rest of the men of Buster Squadron. The editor has appended to each story a short indication of the sort of man each pilot was: his background, his look s, h is te mp er am e nt, and in far too many cases his fate. But the men speak for themselves, and vividly recreate Britain's finest hour." Cigarette odor, minor edge wear to boards, book is lsightly cocked. F.S.P. - AN N.C.O.'s DESCRIPTION OF HIS AND OTHERS' FIRST SIX MONTHS OF WAR, JANUARY 1st - JUNE 1st 1940. (FIELD SECURITY PERSONNEL.), Gwynn-Browne, Arthur.
383 Gwynn-Browne, Arthur. F.S.P. - AN N.C.O.'s DESCRIPTION OF HIS AND OTHERS' FIRST SIX MONTHS OF WAR, JANUARY 1st - JUNE 1st 1940. (FIELD SECURITY PERSONNEL.)
London Chatto & Windus 1942 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Fair
159 pp, 7 1/2" H. "Sergeant Gwynn-Browne is in Field Security Personnel. He joined up 1939. Being a soldier is a new experience for him. 'F.S.P.' begins on a parade ground; it ends on Dunkirk beaches; in between it says a lot that has not been said before. Sergeant Gwynn-Browne is a character - (and) he is subtly and devastatingly and unexpectedly funny. The solemn and ceremonious business of standing in a line being counted is funny; so is the dubious pleasure of living on a Flemish farm with a 'very premeating little pig' as a co-billettee. Routine, discomfort, uncertainty, danger - they are all funny as Sergeant Gwynn-Browne sees them. But there is another side to the picture. There is Dunkirk with the soldiers waiting patiently on the beaches as the town blazes and the bombs fall. There is the 'honour and humanity' we are fighting for, and the new world we hope for. Indeed there is as much seriousness as of laughter in this book; and every reader will find himself in the company not only of a lively jester, but also of an original and thoughtful personality." Several small creases at bottom corner of title page - some indentation on a few subsequent pages, page leaf 13/14 has bee roughly trimmed at bottom edge, small shallow bump on front edge of spine, light edge wear, wrinkling at bottom and top of spine, light browning to edges of text block - small faint stain on top . Dust jacket is price-clipped, has a piece missing at bottom of front panel, several edge tears (one with old tape on inside) and edge chips light browning - a little more at edges and on spine, protected in a mylar sleeve.

ARNHEM LIFT - AND THE GERMAN VERSION. (NEW AND EXPANDED EDITION)., Hagen, Louis. Foreword by Lieutenant-General Sir Frederick A.M. Browning. (Winrich Behr.)
387 Hagen, Louis. Foreword by Lieutenant-General Sir Frederick A.M. Browning. (Winrich Behr.) ARNHEM LIFT - AND THE GERMAN VERSION. (NEW AND EXPANDED EDITION).
Leo Cooper, London, 1993, new, expanded and revised edition.
118 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850523753 B&w photographs, maps. "The airborne troops who landed at Arnhem in September 1944 suffered appalling casualties in the course of the nine-day battle; of some 10,000 men who went into action, 1,400 were killed and more than 6,000 - about a thrid of them wounded - were captured. British accounts have almost invariably praised the Germans' humane treatment of these prisoners. Had the young Sergeant 'Lewis Haig' b e e n c a ptured, however, his fate would have been markedly different, for the Nazis would have reacted with characteristic savagery to a German of Jewish extraction fighting against them as a member of the elite Glider Pilot Regiment. But 'Hai g' - L ou i s Ha gen - was one of the few who got back, to write the first and, as is widely accepted, one of the very best personal accounts of the battle....Forty-five years after the battle, at a dinner party in Germany, the author found himsel f n ext to a ma n of about his own age, the former Major Winrich Behr who had been Adjutant to Field-Marshal Model during the Arnhem battle. The two men became friends. Louis Hagen's interest in the battle was rekindled and Behr told him his own sid e of the st ory , whi ch is included here. Here, too, are balanced assessments of the planning and strategy of the operation, of the remarkable German reaction to the airborne incursion, and of the reasons for its failure." Just four years later its courageous young RAF pilots became the heroes of the Battle of Britain as they repelled the Luftwaffe attack. 176 pp, 12 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs, drawings, reproductions. "(B)egins with the earliest pieces of Western artillery that were little more than iron tubes firing stone shot. Over the next few centuries the guns became more mobile and more powerful, influencing the course of the battles in which they were involved. Muzzle loaders reached their apogee in the Napoleonic wars and the American Civil War during the nineteenth century. By the outbreak of World War I in 1914, breech-loaded guns were the standard, and weapons of such large calibres were being constructed that they needed to be mounted on rail wagons to give them any form of mobility. Artillery played a significant role in shaping how that conflict was fought, and it was to play an equally signifi-cant role in World War II. Only now, in the twenty-first century, is the supremacy of artillery on the battlefield being challenged by air-dropped precision-guided weapons, but the arm is fighting back with sophisticated new munitions becoming available which will ensure that artillery has a part to play on the modern battlefield for the forseeable future." 272 pp, 10" H. B&w photographs. "Compared to the well-published achievements of the Navy, Army and Air Force, an ocean of silence surrounds the long-gone Canadian Merchant Navy. And yet, Canada operated the wartime world's fourth largest Merchant Navy, almost all of it built in Canadian shipyards. Robert Halford provides an in-depth look at the Merchant Navy from its glorious beginnings to its unceremonious dissolution. During wartime, the merchant seamen were the heroes of the 1939-1945 war, the fourth arm of the Services. By 1948 they had undergone a quick image change, transformed from heroes to anonymous troublemakers hindering the shipping industry. 'The Unknown Navy' endeavours to throw light on the Merchant Navy's important contribution to the Allied cause during World War II." Dust jacket has a tiny scuff/dent on the front panel.

London Caxton 2000 1840671467 / 9781840671469 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
192 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H). B&w photographs, maps. "Operation 'Market Garden' remains one of the most spectacular and controversial battles of the Second World War. It was a bold plan, aimed at shortening the course of the war dramatically. Key bridges in Holland seized in advance by a daring airborne 'coup de main' would be the means to a surprise thrust into the German industrial heartland. On the fiftieth anniversary of the operation, (the author) has pieced together an important new view of what was a considerable failure. Existing accounts direct most of the blame at XXX Corps, and two divisions in particular, for failing to push the ground advance forward. This new work sets out to provide an objective and realistic appraisal of why things went wrong - and who in truth should have borne the responsibility. Why, for example, were demands for proper signals equipment for the airborne troops ignored, with predictable consequences? Why was intelligence pointing towards the fatal presence of the 9th and 10th SS Panzer Divisions ignored before the operation? And why, with Allied air forces in a position to dominate the skies above the battlefield, was air support so lacking and ineffectual? While some of the questions needed for a definitive judgement can never be answered, this book represents an important step towards redressing the balance of criticism and allowing a new view of the bloody battles for Arnhem and Oosterbeek." PARA! FIFTY YEARS OF THE PARACHUTE REGIMENT., Harclerode, Peter. Foreword by Lieutenant General Sir Michael Gray.
398 Harclerode, Peter. Foreword by Lieutenant General Sir Michael Gray. PARA! FIFTY YEARS OF THE PARACHUTE REGIMENT.
Brockhampton, London, 1999.
415 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1860199127 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "The catalyst for the formation of British airborne forces came with the spectacular display of the capabilities of airborne assault by the German forces in the blitzkrieg against the west in 1940. Impressed by the daring and courage of the fallschirmjager, Churchill sought to create a similar arm for the British Army. Initially airborne operations were carried out by volunteers from all regiments and corps. While Britain was on the defensive, the newly formed parachute units took part in two airborne raids, carrying the war to the enemy in Italy and France. Of these, the most famous is the raid on Bruneval in 1942, duri ng which German rad ar technology was captured. By the time the Allies were ready to invade 'Fortress Europe' in 1944, The Parachute Regiment, which had been formed in 1942, comprised a large number of well equipped and highly trained battali o n s . Those of the 6th Air borne Division were given the task of holding the vital left flank of the Normandy invasion beaches to block German reinforcements and ensure swift Allied breakout over the strategically vital bridges. The Regiment's m os t fa mo u s hour was again an e xcellent example of the nature of the warfare it had been conceived to conduct: the ill-fated combined airborne/ground assault in Holland in September 1944 depended entirely on a surprise airborne assault to open a c or rid or in t o Germany along which the British Second Army was to pour into the heart of Hitler's Reich. Although the plan failed, it firmly established The Parachute Regiment as an elite force: tough, well-trained and capable of undertaking haza rdo us o per ati on s deep in enemy territ ory. This tradition is no less true now, fifty years on, with the post-war period having seen many further stirring examples of the Regiment's skill and valour throughout the world: from Suez and the jungl es o f Mal aya to t he mountains of the Radfan , the Falkland Islands and duties in Northern Ireland."
