THE DESTRUCTION OF LORD RAGLAN: A TRAGEDY OF THE CRIMEAN WAR 1854-55., Hibbert, Christopher.
341 Hibbert, Christopher. THE DESTRUCTION OF LORD RAGLAN: A TRAGEDY OF THE CRIMEAN WAR 1854-55.
Harmondsworth Viking 1984 0670800007 / 9780670800001 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
337 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w maps, photographs. "In March 1954 an army of 30,000 men sailed from Portsmouth to the Crimea to defend the crumbling Turkish empire against invasion by Russia. Led by Lord Raglan, a veteran of Waterloo but, after forty years, out of touch with the realities of warfare, they embarked for an unknown country to defend a cause few understood or even cared about. Nevertheless enthusiasm and confidence were high among the men of what 'The Times' described as 'the finest army that has ever left these shores'. The euphoria was short-lived and the campaign quickly degenerated into a series of humiliating military disasters caused largely by incompetence at the highest level, bitter personal rivalries among the divisional commanders, and criminal inadequacies of transport, clothing and medical supplies. A scapegoat had to be found if the British Government was to survive, and it was Lord Raglan who bore the brunt of the virulent anti-war campaign mounted by the newspapers. Misunderstood and maligned by his contemporaries, his reputation blackened for posterity, Lord Raglan died a broken man only weeks before the French finally defeated the Russians at Malakoff, with little help from their demoralized British allies. In this fair, scholarly and vividly written account of the confused tragedy of the Crimea, Christopher Hibbert has done much to redeem the reputation of a sensitive and courageous man who simply lacked the necessary qualities of leadership and intellect to extricate his army with honour from an ill-conceived and bloody campaign. Drawing on contemporary letters, papers, reports and diaries, the author strongly suggests that the chaos of the Crimea was the result, not of one man's neglect, but of a whole nation's folly." 2" split at top of gutter between index pages 336/337, one tiny corner bump. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, light rubbing - mainly on rear panel, two wrinkles in laminate down front cover.

Bilingual French/English Introduction / Location of Documents / List of Persons / Captions to Illustrations / Indexes. Main text English only. This volume "deals with the evolution of Canadian policy during the middle years of the war, from the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, until the end of 1943. During those years, attention shifted from working out the bases of Canada's participation, as 'a belligerent second only to Britain as a Commonwealth military power', to an attempt to define this country's place in an Allied war effort dominated by much larger nations. That effort was important not only because Canadians were concerned about the conduct of the war itself but also because precedents were being established which would profoundly affect their interests once peace returned. It was a time of testing Canada's sovereignty and for determining the recognition which the country might expect for its contribution to victory." 345 Hoare, Oliver, introduced and selected by. ENIGMA: CODEBREAKING AND THE SECOND WORLD WAR.
Public Record Office, Richmond, 2002.
Collection of 16 facsimile documents in card case - in original publisher's shrinkwrap. ISBN 1903365406 "The story of Allied codebreaking during the Second World War is one of extraordinary complexity, significance and success. The centre of Brit ain's codebreaking operation was at Bletchley Park (the home of 'Station X' during the war), and it was here the codebreakers raced to decipher German military signals, in particular the 'unbreakable' naval Enigma codes. The special intelli g e n c e ( r eferred to as 'Ultra') that they provided had a major influence on the outcome of hostilities, most notably contributing to crucial successes in the Battle for the Atlantic. Despite Churchill's orders at the end of the war that all e vi de nc e re l at in g to codebreaking be destroyed, many papers, including internal histories, summaries, and copies of decrypts, did survive. Key documents from this unique archive - many of which have never been published before - are faithfull y r epr odu ce d i n thi s p ack, providing a fascinating introduction to Britain's cryptographic secrets of the Second World War." "If the people of Quebec claim a right to sovereignty, Inuit of Quebec argue that their right of self-determination empowers them with the choice to remain part of Quebec, of Canada, or to secede on their own. The James Bay Cree consider Hydro Quebec's 'mad plans to engineer and dam the vast ecosystem' where they have lived for centuries an affront to their own right to control their land. The Labrador Innu are struggling with both the federal and provincial governments to protect their traditional hunting territories from threats imposed by military training flights and mineral exploration. As the Native peoples of Canada are meeting t h e m , asserting their right to make choices for themselves, they stand steadfastly 'on the land' from which flow their inherent rights to self-determination." With an all-metal, stressed-skin design and a cruising speed of 17 0 miles an hour, the 247 marked the end of the slower, flimsy wood-and-dope frame biplanes used by the military and mail service. Though quickly overshadowed by its competitors, the 247 proved to the American public that commercial air travel c o u l d be both safe and efficient. In fact, this innovative airplane determined the direction of aircraft design for nearly the next two decades. (This books) traces the evolution of the 247, describing the technological and social circumstan c es d ur in g and after World War I that led to its development. You'll find fascinating descriptions of William Boeing's struggle to implement his unique designs, the public's reception of the 247, the aircraft's commercial and military uses, an d the 24 7's ul ti mate impact on aviation." "Conventional warfare today can still be a matter of bloody face-to-face fighting but the modern British soldier, a highly-trained, well-equipped speci alist, is a far cry from the ill-clad yeoman of the Middle Ages. In this evocative book Matthew Holden illustrates how this change has come about, starting with the Norman Conquest and setting the narrative in the context of British society a n d d e v elopments in military techniques and strategy. Drawing on vivid eyewitness accounts he describes the British soldier's everyday life through the centuries in terms of pay, conditions, discipline, medical services and other aspects, and h e cr e at es a fascinating picture of changing attitudes, both towards the fighting community and inside it." 224 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1575001470 B&w photographs, reproductions, maps/battle plans. "The Western Front in World War I was the scene of devastating trench warfare and astonishing human loss: nearly 750,000 soldiers perished in the battles fought in France and Belgium from 1914 to 1918. (This book) traces the path those soldiers took, and presents the political, military, and human dilemmas of a bitter and bloody war. (It) takes us through the major and most costly battles of the Western Front, many of which garnered dubious gains at best, and all of which were won only with great human sacrifice. The first battle of Ypres was not only a scene of heavy Allied losses, but was dubbed by the Germ ans the 'Massacre of the Innocents'; Verdun was a scene of astonishing casualties, where the professed goal of the German commander was to bleed the French forces to death; the fighting in the trenches of the Somme - a battle of attrition tha t l a s t e d six months - proved a turning point for the morale of the British Army and 'the muddy grave of the German field Army, and of the confidence in the infallibility of German leadership'; while the long wearing slog toward Passchendaele w as pa ve d wi th inept leadership and mutinies in the French forces before dreadful conditions simply ground the battle to a halt. Portraying the Western Front in stark and moving terms, Holmes draws not only from current scholarship, but also fr om l ett ers w rit ten by the soldiers and the stories of the survivors themselves."
