Part Two studies the psychology of the American fighting man and points out the strange contrasts and contradictions in his mental and emotional make-up. Chancellor, London, 2000, reprint.
194 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0753703629 B&w photographs, reproductions. "During the Second World War a number of daring military actions were carried out by Allied and Axis land, sea and air forces against targets carefully selected for their strategic or propaganda values. These raids were as individual in character as the men who carried them out and equally unique in their objectives. (The author) relates more than twenty such operations mounted b y B r i t ish, German, American, Australian, Italian and Canadian forces. Raiding appealed to British military men's psyche - and on the whole, they were good at it. Therefore, 'Raiders' emphasizes attacks mounted by the British because they we re i n vo lv ed i n more theatres of war than any other combatant. (Laffin) examines the qualities of successful raiders, as well as their selection and training, before looking in detail at individual missions. The exploits recorded here range fro m a B rit ish co mma ndo strike against Rommel's supposed HQ in the North African desert in 1941, to the daring surveys of the Normandy beaches in preparation for Operation 'Overlord'; from the German glider-borne assault on the great Belgian fort ress of Ebe n Em ael in 1 940, to SS Colonel Otto Skorzeny's dramatic mission to snatch Mussolini from imprisonment on an Italian mountaintop in 1943. Here are the Gironde river exploit of the Special Boat Service in 1942 when frogmen comman dos c aused ser ious damag e to four large enemy ships, and Operation 'Jericho' in 1944 when a low-level attack by RAF Mosquito bombers blasted a huge hole in the wall of a Gestapo prison in France." THE LAST DITCH. THE SECRETS OF THE NATIONWIDE BRITISH RESISTANCE ORGANIZATION AND THE NAZI PLANS FOR THE OCCUPATION OF BRITAIN 1940-1944., Lampe, David.
350 Lampe, David. THE LAST DITCH. THE SECRETS OF THE NATIONWIDE BRITISH RESISTANCE ORGANIZATION AND THE NAZI PLANS FOR THE OCCUPATION OF BRITAIN 1940-1944.
London Cassell 1968 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
219 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). B&w photographs, drawings, maps. "(T)he first detailed study of what is known to have been the intentions on both sides (if the Germans had occupied Britian in 1940). Based largely on newly researched material and years of persistent detective work, it investigates the German plans for Occupied Britain and, much more startling, the British answer. It would have been a harsh occupation, harsher perhaps than the Nazi rule in Eastern Europe, as the stark content of the German draft orders and decrees show only too plainly. Mass deportation of the able-bodied male population, wholesale appropriations of the country's agriculture, mineral and industrial produce, these and more would have reduced Britain to a starved and barren land. Few could have escaped oppression, and the notorious Gestapo Arrest List for Great Britain, here published in full for the first time since its distribution to senior Gestapo officers in 1940, shows how wide the Nazi net was to be spread. What would Britain have done? Mr. Lampe has been made privy to the secrets of Europe's first and best-trained Resistance movement. All over Britain its members went quietly about their daily jobs, but, by night, they moved in stealth about a darkened Britain, training, practising, testing their ability to sabotage, to spy and to kill. They took 'holidays' at a country house in Berkshire to acquire murderous skills they then taught on their own home ground. Caches of arms and explosives, skilfully constructed hide-outs were established in ever-growing numbers. A Resistance wireless network - never detected by the powerful German monitoring service - was set up and manned. (This) is a story without a climax, for although the vaguely named 'Auxiliary Units' reached an unparalleled peak of efficiency, they never went into action. The important thing is that the Resistance was ready and waiting. It was the last ditch of Britain's defence in 1940, and before it was crossed it meant the Germans to pay dearly." Previous owner's place, date and signature on front free endpaper; very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine - very tiny tear at top of spine; minor dust soiling on edges of text block. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has minor browning, small corner crease on front flap, small soft crease on rear panel, light edge wear with a few very tiny chips, light rubbing.

352 Lapp, Ralph E. Foreword by Stewart Alsop. THE NEW FORCE: THE STORY OF ATOMS AND PEOPLE.
New York Harper & Brothers 1953 Hard Cover Very Good Fair
238 pp, 8 3/8" H. Contents: Foreword; About People and Atomic Energy; The New Force; From Manhattan to Nagasaki; Postwar Development; Destruction Unlimited; The Atomic Impasse; Battlefield A-Weapons; Peacetime Power; Atomic Engines; The Atom - Man's Servant; Secrecy and the Atom; Power for the Future; Index. "The story beings with early atomic experiments in distant laboratories in Italy and Germany and leads swiftly up to Professor Einstein's fateful letter to President Roosevelt, and the overnight mobilization of American science. We see the mammoth plants at Oak Ridge and Hanford thrown up in haste to solve the riddle of separating the U-235 isotope from the U-238, the first controlled chain reaction in the squash courts of a Middlewest university; the crucial work in the laboratories at Los Alamos. (It) brings the military and diplomatic story up to date, detailing the atomic scientists' 'march on Washington', the establishment of the AEC, the Bikini tests, the multiplying of the A-bomb's destructive power; and, within seven short years, the coming of the H-bomb. And there is the story of atomic energy's present and future potential in peace as well as in war - as an instrument for industrial power as well as military; for science, medicine, agriculture as well as (perhaps instead of) strategic and tactical weapons." Osprey, Oxford, 2000.
96 pp, 9 3/4" H, soft cover. ISBN 1841762806 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, colour maps/battle plans, plates. "The first battle of the desert war, Operation Compass was originally envisaged as a spoiling attack, combined with a recon naissance in force to disrupt Italian forces that had advanced into Egypt in September 1940. Lt Gen. Richard O'Connor launched what amounted to a British 'Blitzkrieg'. In less than two months the British forces swept 500 miles along the coa s t o f N orth Africa. 7th Armoured Division raced across the desert to cut off the retreating Italians, and O'Connor's men destroyed nine Italian divisions, and took 130,000 prisoners. This title guides the reader in full detail through the sta ge s o f th e r apid advance, and the hard fighting in an unforgiving environment, as well as examining the consequences of the clash. This victory would lead to the arrival of General Rommel and his Afrikakorps at Tripoli in March 1941." THE UNKNOWN WARRIOR., Leasor, James.
358 Leasor, James. THE UNKNOWN WARRIOR.
Heinemann, London, 1980, first edition.
264 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "Before the D-Day landings in 1944, British and American deception planners sought to convince the German High Command that the Allied invasion would be in the Pas de Calais, north-east of the Se ine, and not in Normandy....But shortly before the D-Day landings some doubts still remained as to whether the German commanders genuinely believed that Calais was the main Allied target. Hitler controlled the panzer divisions, and while h i s c o m m a n ders reached decisions on a basis of fact, the Fuhrer was often ruled by his intuition. In a desperate last-minute attempt to convince Hitler, possibly against his commanders' views, a volunteer was sought to fly to France, carry in g wh a t wo ul d se em unarguable evidence that the main landings were to take place around Calais. This volunteer - The Unknown Warrior - came from X-Troop - or No.3 Troop - No.10 (Inter-Allied) Commando, formed by Lord Louis Mountbatten, from an ti -Na zi G erm ans , Hun gar ians and Austrians. Many were Jews whose families had died in concentration camps. All had volunteered for hazardous tasks where their particular backgrounds or qualifications were of great value. How many who s erve d i n un ifo rm in N orma nd y an d Eu rope after June 6, 1944 and survived - British, American, Canadian, German alike - owe their lives to the courage and resolution of The Unknown Warrior?" Very small red ink mark at bottom of front board, a few ver y tin y fa int foxi ng ma rks on t op of textblock. Dust jacket is price clipped, has light edge wrinkling, light rubbing. VG/VG

998 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Map endpapers. B&w maps. "World War II eventually involved every major power in the world, and before it was over some fifty million people lost their lives. (This) is a complete political and military history of World War II. Written with the pace and sweep of a fine novel, it makes the period, its major leaders, and the events not only comprehensible but also alive and real. Robert Leckie begins his book with the punitive treaty of Versailles and the fumbling efforts of the Western democracies to cope with the rise of Mussolini and Hitler. He draws vivid profiles of the political leaders, generals, and admirals who created and fought the war; describes the battles; analyzes the military strategy; considers the economic and political factors; and tells of the daily lives of those who were engaged on the far-flung fronts and those who endured at home. Churchill, Stalin, Roosevelt, MacArthur, Tojo, Eisenhower, Montgomery, Rommel and many other fascinating individuals become live protagonists on the stage sets of such dramatic sites as Stalingrad, Tobruk, Guadalcanal, Dunkirk, Leningrad, Monte Cassino, Midway, Omaha Beach, and Iwo Jima. Readers of all ages will find Leckie's powerful, action-packed narrative both compelling and comprehensive, and they will gain fascinating insights into one of the greatest and most awful events in human history."
