176 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0070924295 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "The liberation of the Netherlands in 1944-45 ended five long years of hardship, oppression, and the indignity of armed occupation. The German occupation culminated in the 'Hunger Winter' of 1944-45 when, deprived of food and fuel, thousands in the heavily populated western Netherlands starved to death. Most of the Jewish community had died in Nazi concent r a t i o n c amps and thousands of men had been deported to Germany as forced labour. No wonder the liberation of the Netherlands by Canadian, British, American and Polish troops released a wave of unforgettable joy....Canadian soldiers recall th e ad va nc e ac r os s Belgium and the Netherlands as one of the most arduous and bitterely contested campaigns of the war. Often their tanks and heavy vehicles bogged down in the soggy terrain and the infantry had to advance on foot across the flo od ed pol der s and a lon g muddy dikes against well-defended German positions. To the soldiers, too, the liberation was a release from the terrors of war, and they joined gladly in the celebrations with the Dutch people. To most Canadians in 193 9 t he Neth erla nd s wa s a tin y far-away country about which they knew little. The momentous events of 1944-45 established a solid bond of affection between the two counties, strengthened after the war by the thousands of war brides and emigran ts w ho heade d for Ca nada. Th is al bum of words and pictures is published in a spirit of rememberance and celebration. Not only does it recapture the emotions of the Dutch at regaining their freedom, but it also commemorates a singular and no ble C ana dian a chieve ment ." 309 Howe, Ellic. THE BLACK GAME: BRITISH SUBVERSIVE OPERATIONS AGAINST THE GERMANS DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR.
London Michael Joseph 1982 0718117182 / 9780718117184 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good No Jacket
276 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), black covers with gold lettering on spine. B&w photographs, reproductions. "This book is mainly concerned with certain British propaganda activities during the Second World War which were classified as 'black'. The BBC's broadcasts to Germany and enemy-occupied Europe, also leaflets bearing the imprint of HM Government and dropped by the RAF, were all 'white'. Black operations, however, never indicated their British origin. Various clandestine broadcasting stations, all of them outside the control of the BBC, sought, sometimes with surprising success, to give the impression that they were actually operating inside Germany or elsewhere in Europe. Great pains were taken to disguise the fact that a strangely variegated range of black printed matter had not, in spite of its convincing appearance and, where necessary, bogus imprints, been produced in Germany, France, Belgium, etc. Indeed, it was all manufactered in London. Little of it was disseminated by the RAF since other and far more covert methods were performed." Faint erased pencil marks and small ghost sticker mark on free front endpaper, faint discoloration on top of textblock, tiny stain on fore-edge of textblock, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine.

STALIN: THE HISTORY OF A DICTATOR., Hyde, H. Montgomery. (Stalin.)
316 Hyde, H. Montgomery. (Stalin.) STALIN: THE HISTORY OF A DICTATOR.
London Rupert Hart-Davis 1971 0246640537 / 9780246640536 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+
679 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). Map endpapers, b&w plates. "The son of a drunken and poverty-stricken Georgian cobbler, Stalin was born in a wooden shack in a small town in Transcaucasia in 1879. When he died at his country villa outside Moscow in 1953, he was the absolute ruler of more than two hundred million Soviet subjects whom he had governed from his office in the Kremlin for upwards of a quarter of a century through the most brutal system of police terror. 'Like Peter the Great, Stalin fought barbarism with barbarism', said his henchman Nikita Khruschev, 'but he was a great man'. This book is largely an endorsement of that opinion. But it will also adjust the traditional view in many important respects. For instance, (the author) shows clearly that while working with the Bolshevik group led by Lenin, before being co-opted onto the party central committee in 1912, Stalin was also an informer for the Tsarist secret police. He describes how (Stalin) used his position as General Secretary of the Soviet Communist Party to build up his pattern of dictatorial rule, and eliminate all his opponents, real or supposed, including Trotsky and virtually the whole of the Bolshevik Old Guard. He examines his role as Commander-in-Chief of Soviet forces during the War, and shows that though he constantly interfered with the conduct of operations, he was by no means the military ignoramus portrayed by Kruschev. (Hyde ) traces in detail the means by which Stalin was able to outwit both Churchill and Roosevelt at their various wartime conferences. Finally he describes how Stalin, by now a paranoiac, was prevented only by sudden illness and death from slaughtering all his remaining close colleagues in the Politburo. Using a mass of little-known Russian language sources as well as such important manuscript collections as the Tsarist secret police archives, the Trotsky papers, and the confidential reports from the British Embassy in Moscow, (Hyde) has produced a biography which is not only readable, but likely to prove the definitive study of this most successful dictator of modern times." Previous owner's signature on half -title page, short light ink mark on verso of frontispiece - also tiny mark on title page, very small slub in paper on free front endpaper, large dog-ear crease on page 417, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very light soiling to edges of textblock, light line rub down rear board, slight bump to three corners. 317 Infield, Glenn B. THE POLTAVA AFFAIR. A RUSSIAN WARNING: AN AMERICAN TRAGEDY.
Macmillan, New York, (1973), Ist edition.
265 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photos. "On the night of June 21, 1944, the Luftwaffe attacked the American air base at Poltava. Unchallenged by the Red Air Force (who were to have provided all air defense), the Germans bombed the field for more than an hour, damaging or destroying more than sixty B-17s, along with virtually the entire supply of fuel, ammunition, and material at Poltava. Why did this tragedy occur? Infield has unearthed evidence that it probably happened on orders from the Kremlin. Stalin, he maintains, was looking not toward the immediate goal of defeating the Axis powers, but toward his own long-range plans for world domination: the Soviet dictator saw 'Operation Franti c' a s a wa y of ma ki ng U.S. forces look impotent, while still making possible the continued flow of American military equipment and know-how. As a result, the hard work of many courageous and resourceful men - captured in Infield's astute character sketches and vivid combat narratives - was largely wasted...(Infield also writes that) the Poltava affair was a clear warning of the rigid polarization that would mark the post-war world." Previous owner's name inked out on free front endpaper. Dust jacket is price clipped, light to moderate edge wear, a few small closed tears - some with creases, 1 1/2" x 1/4" chip at top of rear panel, very slight fading to spine, light rubbing, crease down front flap, stain at bottom inside edge of spine. 235 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). B&w photographs. "As Senior Intelligence Officer of 35 Wing, Irving studied and furthered the technical and tactical resources of low level photographic reconnaissance and the prompt distribution of intelligence derived from it. The unacceptable casualties incurred by 35 Wing in supporting the raid on Dieppe were proof of the tardy recognition by Army/Air planning staffs of the need for total co-operation between the Services in action if the liberation of Europe was to be achieved. The theme of this book is the contribution of 35 Wing to the preparation and achievement of Operation Overlord, the reconnoitring of V1 missile sites in France that subsequent bombing rendered inoperable and, above all, its services to 1st Canadian Army throughout the ensuing campaign. This personal record reflects an abiding memory and admiration for the skills, the devotion to duty, the light hearted companionship and dauntless courage of pilots inspired by exemplary and discerning commanding officers." Slight bump to bottom corner of rear board, minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling.
