FLYING COLORS. FEATURING OVER 1300 MILITARY AIRCRAFT MARKINGS AND COLOR SCHEMES., Green, William and Swanborough, Gordon, compilers.
302 Green, William and Swanborough, Gordon, compilers. FLYING COLORS. FEATURING OVER 1300 MILITARY AIRCRAFT MARKINGS AND COLOR SCHEMES.
London Salamander 1997 086101944X / 9780861019441 Hard Cover Fine Very Good John Weal, Richard Caruana and Brian Knight.
207 pp, 4to (12" H). Profusely illustrated in colour. "Military aircraft have been variously daubed, cunningly camouflaged, boastfully personalized or otherwise extravagantly colored since they first took to the air more than 80 years ago. From the time that the identity of aircraft was established with national insignia, the markings of aircraft has become a science, and their decoration an art form. At times of tension, trends have been toward camouflage colors for concealment as international relationships deteriorated. Yet, in peace and war, there have also been 'anti-camouflage' color schemes applied specifically to render aircraft more conspicuous for training, rescue and other purposes. 'Flying Colors' is a superb survey of this fascinating scene, depicting more than 100 different aircraft types, from the World War I Spads to the modern swing-wing Tornado, in more than 1300 spectacular illustrations. Splendid use is made of finely detailed profile drawings, top and bottom, head-on and 'scrap' views, together with emblem and other detail enlargements, all in full-color and each extensively researched by the compilers and artists who have striven for accuracy and interest. Each first-class drawing is described, with identification of squadron, unit, theater and period, and often even the pilot's name and rank too! Recognized as a major landmark in aviation publishing, this volume will especially delight aircraft modelmakers and all enthusiasts of the dramatic history of warplanes." Dust jacket has moderate creasing at top of spine - very light wrinkling at top/bottom of flap-folds and at bottom of spine.

New York D. Appleton 1885 Hard Cover Very Good- No Jacket

These two volumes form the second part of 'The Greville Memoirs' which began with the reigns of George IV and William IV, but are complete in themselves, being numbered Vol. I and Vol. II. "(T)he present publication embraces a period of fourteen years, extending from the accession of Her Majesty Queen Victoria in 1837 to the coup d'etat of Napoleon III in 1851. The occurrences which took place after the close of 1851, the subsequent establishment of the Imperial power in France, the formation of the Cabinet of Lord Aberdeen, followed in 1853 by the Crimean War, mark an important epoch in the history of this country and Europe. I have therefore thought that this date is the appropriate conclusion of this portion of the work. Mr. Greville continued his Journal for nine years more, until the close of 1860, though in his later years he was less conversant with public affairs than he had been in the more active period of his life." Vol. I has a small bump to bottom corner of approx. first 50 pages, small finger print on verso of front free endpaper, small bump to bottom corner of rear board, small light stain at top fore-edge of textblock - scattered tiny faint foxing marks on lower fore-edge, small line scuff on front board. THE STORY OF CANADIAN ROADS., Guillet, Edwin C.
309 Guillet, Edwin C. THE STORY OF CANADIAN ROADS.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1968 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
246 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions, maps, drawings. "From portage trails snaking their way through the wilderness to superhighways carrying the raw materials and produce of an industrial nation, Canada's roads have had a romantic but long-neglected history. The problems which Canada has faced in seeking to connect two oceans by road would have been formidable even in a land more densely populated. Early builders found their way blocked by forest and swamp, rivers, rocks, vast areas of grassland, mountains, and muskeg. Their gradual success is recounted from the woodland trail cleared by Champlain in Acadia on through the early construction by corvee in New France; the Temiscouta Trail between the Atlantic Provinces and the Canadas; the infamous corduroy roads and bridges which jolted passengers unmercifully and lamed their horses; the plank roads, Canada's first contribution to road-building science; the cart tracks cut into the virgin prairies by Metis buffalo hunters; the Cariboo Road, build through sheer canyons and over mountain passes to the gold fields fo the Upper Fraser; and the vehicles which travelled these routes - the wonderul assortment of sleighs, caleches, buckboards, Red River carts, wagons, and stage-coaches of the nineteenth century. Then came the automobile, and with it an unprecedented personal mobility. Today Canada's roads are one of her principal resources. The Trans-Canada Highway, a dream for most of a century, has forged a new tie of asphalt and concrete, unifying the country." Dust jacket has very light edge wear, tiny dent on front hinge.

These include the struggle over control of the Fleet Air Arm, the Jutland Controversy, the Invergordon Mutiny and its aftermath, and both the Washington Naval Conference and the Lausanne Conference. There are interesting lett ers to Keyes from friends describing the situation in the Baltic, 1919-20, and China in the 1920s. Of particular interest is an interview with President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1934; an account of a naval exercise in the Mediterranean si m u l a t i n g t he reinforcement of Singapore in the event of war with Japan; and a contingency plan for forcing the Dardenelles in the event of war with Turkey over the Mosul question. There are discussions of the writing of the official histor ie s of t he w ar , l et ters from a former Austrian naval officer on Adriatic matters and, of course, lots of revealing comments on the personalities (and feuds) of leaders of the time: Churchill, Trenchard, Beatty, Jellicoe, Chatfield and others . 352 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w plates, maps/battle plans. "This important study of the cause and effects of Napoleon's removal from power tracks the significant events in his illustrious career through to his downfall and, while doing so, charts the clandestine diplomatic intrigues linking Britain, Austria, Russia and Prussia in the quest for the Emperor's demise. Using substantial new research, (the author) questions many of the established views in Napoleonic literature to date. By disclosing hitherto secret terrorist organizations, uncovering the attempts to assassinate Napoleon, highlighting unbridled political duplicity, and demonstrating a host of previously misinterpreted signals and actions, he instigates a fresh assessment of the fall of Napoleon, new reasons to consider how much it was self-inflicted and how much it became inevitable given the combined forces - 'friend' and well as 'foe' - ranged against him. However great his military campaigns, how often he was victorious on the battle-field, Napoleon was destined to be deposed by political connivance and personal betrayal." New York E.P. Dutton 1987 0525242104 / 9780525242109 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
373 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs, map. "The time, January-November 1963. The place: Saigon. The circumstances: a fledgling nation being subverted from inside and out, and a set of treacherous Vietnamese generals and arrogant, blundering high officials of the Kennedy administration. The result: the assassination of South Vietnamese President Ngo Dinh Diem and his brother Ngo Dinh Nhu in a military coup that turned the Vietnam War in to an American war and set in motion an ever-widening tragedy. This riveting inside chronicle of a single year is not only an awesome task of research but a cautionary tale for all Americans. Dr. Hammer, who visited the embattled nation many time s during the period and interviewed key characters in the drama, cuts away layer after layer of double-talk to expose the cancer of incomprehension and mistrust that killed all hopes of preserving the independence of South Vietnam. Without ever calling names or placing blame the author is everywhere, probing, digging, uncovering - letting history render its own verdict. When November 1963 was over, both the Vietnamese and American presidents had died at the hands of assassins. No one but ( the author) could have summoned up the ghost of Ngo Dinh Diem with such power or demonstrated so poignantly its significance for our larger involvement in Vietnam." 224 pp, small 4to (10 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 155278102X Profusely illustration in colour and b&w with photograph, reproductions, maps/battle plans. "This brilliant account, full of unique insights into the warfare of Ancient Gre ece, covers a millenium of war: from the development of the Greek city-state, to the Persian Wars; from the Peloponnesian War of the late fifth century BC, to the military revolution of the fourth century BC and the end of the citizen militia u n d e r Philip, to the rise of Alexander the Great and the Hellenization of the western world. Throughout, (the author) places the reader in the thick of the battle - transforming the distant figures of survey and atlas to real people who killed a nd d ie d. With wonderfully descriptive illustrations of battle scenes and explanatory maps, this study brings a much needed reality to military scholarship. (He) brings vividly to life the reality of hoplite fighting and the gruelling challe nge of a cul tur e in which battle was an expected and regular part of life. A man's contribution on the battlefield was tremendously important: for his own epitaph Aeschylus wrote of having fought at Marathon, but made no mention at all of havi ng w ritt en the monu me ntal triology, th 'Oresteia'. The list of notable Greeks at war contains name after famous name - philosophers, playwrights, poets, historians - all of whom, at one time or other, had killed in hand-to-hand fighting. Sopho cles, Socr ate s, D emost hen es - each fought in battle armed only with spear and shield. War formed the backdrop of centuries of Greek civilization. The unique practice of Ancient Greek warfare explains how the rise of western civilization and many o f its inst ituti ons we re o riginally an integral part of the conduct of war." Hodder and Stoughton, London, 1980.
271 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 034024299X B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "(The author), in this long, close and hard look at one of the events which shaped the course of the war, cogently argues that if the ful l truth had been known at the time, the nation's exultation at its deliverance would have been greatly dimmed; and that the Dunkirk spirit, which helped to sustain the British people through five more hard years of war was to a considerable e x t e n t b ased on myth; necessary myth, which was eagerly embraced by a nation under the spell of Churchill's oratory. For while the soldiers, or most of them, displayed fortitude, there was deception and trickery, conflict and contradictory ord er s at t he po litical and high command level. It can be argued that in war it is sometimes necessary to deceive allies as well as enemies. The reader will be able to judge for himself the morality of actions taken by desperate men as catastrop he lo ome d e ver nea rer. Nicholas Harman scrutinises the Dunkirk affair at all its levels. He sees it through the eyes of Cabinet ministers and military commanders; from the naval angle and from the viewpoint of those who manned the 'little shi ps' ; a nd h e ha s re s earc hed a wealth of revealing anecdote about the confused, exhausted soldiers who made the long retreat to the port, and who, on arrival in Britain, were welcomed as if they had been conquerors." "Set against a background of intrigue, oriental dissimulation and downright treachery, the story of Plassey has all the ingredients of fiction - Anglo-French rivalry for domination of trade in the vastly rich subcontinent; the 'atrocity' of the Black Hole of Calcutta; a fog-enshrouded march through the very middle of a Bengali army; and finally a battle won by will-power and nerve against enormous odds. Peter Harrington prefaces his colourful account with the story of the siege of Arcot, during which Clive won his spurs." "The Osprey Campaign Series presents concise, authoritative accounts of the great conflicts of history. Each volume begins with an assessment of each commander's campaign strategy, then recounts the progress of the fighting, blow-by-blow. More than 90 illustrations, including maps, charts and colour plates accompany the text, and a series of three-dimensional battle maps mark the critical stages of the campaign. Each volume concludes with a brief guide to the battlefield today, and detailed notes for wargamers." Interior - very faint cigarette odor, otherwise clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor soiling on bottom of textblock, light yellowing to covers and edges of textblock, light waviness to top of textblock, flat uncreased spine. VG
