DESPERATE SIEGE: THE BATTLE OF HONG KONG., Ferguson, Ted.
302 Ferguson, Ted. DESPERATE SIEGE: THE BATTLE OF HONG KONG.
Toronto Doubleday Canada 1980 0385146949 / 9780385146944 Hard Cover Very Good Good
252 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w photographs, maps. "On Christmas Day 1941, Hong Kong, 'the Gibraltar of the Orient', crumbled under the massive onslaught of crack Japanese invasion troops. The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the Royal Rifles of Canada, ill equipped and unblooded, fought side by side with four other British Commonwealth units to defend the Crown colony. For eighteen days, the heavily outnumbered soldiers surpassed all expectations, winning lasting honour on the battlefield before being marched off to spend four and a half years in Japanese prison camps. They had endured constant air strikes, artillery barrages, vicious assaults, and hand-to-hand combat. Their heroic sacrifice is made all the more tragic when one realizes that, from the start, they were considered expendable. Base on interviews with survivors of the battle and the POW cages, (this) is a powerful tale of human courage in the face of impossible odds." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has light to moderate edge wear at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, several small tears archivally taped, light water marks on lower inside of flap-folds, light fading to spine colour.

308 Finley, Gerald. GEORGE HERIOT: POSTMASTER-PAINTER OF THE CANADAS.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1983 0802055842 / 9780802055842 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good George Heriot.
310 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w reproductions. "George Heriot (1759-1839), a Scot, is best known as a skilled landscape watercolourist and as the contentious deputy postmaster general of British North America from 1800 to 1816. He was also a travel writer and a poet. In this volume, a combination of biography and art history, Gerald Finaly presents, for the first time, a rounded picture of Heriot, revealing his motives and ideals while also illuminating the texture of life in Canada during the early years of settlement. In describing Heriot's several roles as artist, administrator, patriot, spy, Fnley presents a portrait of an eighteenth-century gentleman whose superficial desires were for an active public life but whose deeper yearnings were for a life of contemplation. This volume serves to recognize Heriot's artistic achievement and to accord him the place he deserves in the history of Canadian art and the country itself." LONG KNIVES AND SHORT MEMORIES: THE SPANDAU PRISON STORY., Fishman, Jack.
311 Fishman, Jack. LONG KNIVES AND SHORT MEMORIES: THE SPANDAU PRISON STORY.

474 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 09319334200 B&w photographs. "In 1945 seven men, once among the most powerful on earth, were locked away in a vast prison built to hold more than 600 inmates, surrounded by every conce ivable escape-proof precaution. Tried and convicted for attempting to enslave the world, they were the last of what Winston Churchill had called 'the Hitler gang'. Their sentences, meted out by the court at Nuremberg, represented a gigantic s t e p f orward in the recognition of international justice. They stood condemned for their part in a campaign of organized cruelty such as history had never seen before. (This book) is the outcome of years of dedicated research. It examines t h e se ve n m en themselves - their private lives, their motivation, their machinations inside Sapdau, their relationships with each other and their attitudes to their crimes. Built up from conversations with their families, lawyers, friends and e ne mi es, an d, i n s ome cases, the men themselves, from visits to Berlin made with their wives, from letters written in prison, both authorized and smuggled, and from authentic conversations between the prisoners, this aspect of the book is in i tse lf a gr ippi ng stu dy o f human corruption. Equally extraordinary are the book's revelations about the hitherto secret diplomatic and political infighting that went on between the four Powers over the welfare and fate of the seven prisoners. The eve nts a nd in tri gues surr ounding the jail are as spellbinding as those that occurred inside." Very minor foxing on top of text block. TANKS AND TRENCHES: FIRST HAND ACCOUNTS OF TANK WARFARE IN THE FIRST WORLD WAR., Fletcher, David, editor.
312 Fletcher, David, editor. TANKS AND TRENCHES: FIRST HAND ACCOUNTS OF TANK WARFARE IN THE FIRST WORLD WAR.
Grange, London, 1996, reprint.
214 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1856279065 B&w photographs. "These echoes from the early days of tank warfare give an idea of the crucial role that tanks played in breaking the murderous stalemate on the Western Fron t. This influence was acknowledged by friend and foe alike and, while not decisive, it certainly hastened the end of that dreadful conflict, saving thousands of Allied lives and ushering in a new era of mechanised warfare. (The editor) d r a w s h i s m aterial exclusively from the archives of the world famous Tank Museum at Bovington Camp, Dorset. His linking narrative guides us through the war, battle by battle, from 15 September 1916 to the Armistice, using firsthand accounts of t he t a nk a ct i on s, extracts from unit war diaries and other primary sources. Many of these accounts are previously unpublished or have had limited circulation, providing us with a fresh and vivid insight into the early days of tank warf are . A w eal th of or igi na l p hotographs showing the tanks and their crews both in action and at rest support these vivid accounts. Their relevance is further enhanced by a selection of contemporary aerial reconnaissance photographs revealing the t opog raph y o f th e la ndsc ape ove r which many of the battles were fought." Book lightly cracked at pages 116/117 and slightly at pages 52/53. Very Good/Fine

Baton Press, Tunbridge Wells, 1984, first edition.
135 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0859361551 B&w photographs, drawings, reproductions, plans. "....deals with the storming of Badajoz, an epic action of the Peninsular War, which involved Wellington's infantry in some of the most savage hand-to-hand fighting of the whole Peninsular period. At appalling cost, in a nightmare battle which lasted throughout the night of the 6th April 1812, they hacked their way over the bodies of their dead and through the forbiddin g medieval walls, which were held with great courage and skill by a brave French and German garrison. Having successfully stormed the breaches, the battle-crazed army went berserk and the horrors of the sacking which followed, as much as t h e s u b l i m e courage of the attackers, have passed into legend. This account, drawn wholly from the vivid descriptions of the officers and common soldiers who fought at Badajoz, is the first to be written exclusively about the siege, the st or mi ng , a nd t he s ho cking events which followed." Yale University Press, New Haven, 2001, first edition.
492 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 030090625 B&w photographs, reproductions. "(T)he first history of what was once viewed as the heart of the American city. It tells the fascinating story of how downtown - and the way Americans thought about downtown - changed over time. By showing how businessmen and property owners worked to promote the well-being of downtown, even at the expense of other parts of the city, it also gives a riveting account of spatial politics in urban America. Drawing on a wide array of contemporary sources, (the author) brings downtown to life, first as 'the' business district, then as the central business district. His book vividly recreates the long-forgotten battles over subways an d skyscrapers in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. And it provides a fresh, often startling perspective on elevated highways, parking bans, urban redevelopment, and other controversial issues. This groundbreaking book will b e a r e velation to scholars, city planners, policymakers, and general readers interested in American cities and American history." 246 pp, 9 3/8" H. Dark blue boards with lighter blue and white lettering on spine and front board - no dust jacket (as issued). Map. "(T)he first full account of a major social and political movement of the interwar years in Canada: the campaign for 'Maritime Rights' which erupted in the Atlantic provinces after World War I. (T)races the history of the movement from its origins in the decline in relative status and influence of the Maritimes that accompanied the rise of the West and the growing dominance of the Central Canadian metropolises. Maritimers saw their political influence reduced, the underpinnings of their economy - especially in the critical areas of tariffs, freight rates, and subsidies - whittled away, and Canada defined in terms that seemed to exclude them. Adopting a strategy characteristic of the progressive movements of the period, they attempted through organization and agitation to restore their position. Farmers, fishermen, manufacturers, and organized labour articulated their demands, through the provincial press, boards of trade, union locals, educational conferences, and mass delegations to Ottawa. Although their efforts were largely defeated by the conflicting interests of stronger regions, and by the King government's adroitness in defusing protest through a policy of study and delay, the author believes that the aroused Maritimers had succeeded in establishing their difficulties in the public's mind as a national problem." 256 pp, large 8vo, (9 3/8" H). B&w maps, photographs. "History's overriding view of the Dieppe raid in 1942 is that of a catastrophic disaster, with thousands of Canadian and British troops killed or captured. Often overlooked is No 4 Commando's successful supporting element of the raid to disable the heavy German guns that threatened the supporting ships at sea. No 4 Commando's training and preparation for their part in the raid was an excellent example of operational planning, its leadership was superb and its luck held. Quite apart from this first use of Commando's, this raid was also the first instance in which US troops fired shots at their European enemy in WWII.
