Bilingual French/English Introduction / Location of Documents / List of Persons / Captions to Illustrations / Indexes. Main text English only. This volume "deals with the evolution of Canadian policy during the middle years of the war, from the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, until the end of 1943. During those years, attention shifted from working out the bases of Canada's participation, as 'a belligerent second only to Britain as a Commonwealth military power', to an attempt to define this country's place in an Allied war effort dominated by much larger nations. That effort was important not only because Canadians were concerned about the conduct of the war itself but also because precedents were being established which would profoundly affect their interests once peace returned. It was a time of testing Canada's sovereignty and for determining the recognition which the country might expect for its contribution to victory." Chapter headings: Conduct of External Relations; Conduct of War; Post-War Planning; United Nations Organizations and Conferences; Other International Organizations and Conferences; Commonwealth Relations; Relations with the United States; Relations with France; Bilateral Relations; Appendices. 286 Hilling, John B. Foreword by Group Captain T.G. 'Hamish' Mahaddie. STRIKE HARD: A BOMBER AIRFIELD AT WAR. RAF DOWNHAM MARKET AND ITS SQUADRONS 1942-46.
Stroud, Gloucestershire Budding / Sutton 1997 1840150017 / 9781840150018 Reprint. Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
141 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4" H). B&w photographs, maps, etc. "This is an account of one small cog in the machinery of the Second World War - the story of the RAF bomber airfield at Downham Market in Norfolk . Every night for three long years young men of RAF Bomber Command flew from this East Anglian airfield in their Stirlings, Lancasters and Mosquitoes to pound into dust the might of Nazi Germany. Their contribution towards winning the war was crucial, but the cost in precious lives and equipment was high: 160 aircraft and nearly 900 airmen were lost on operations. Downham Market was notable in a number of ways, not least for the fact that two posthumous Victoria Crosses were won by its pilots (out of a total of only twenty-one for the whole of Bomber Command), and that it was the second of fifteen airfields in England to be equipped with the life-saving fog dispersal device known as FIDO. It was from Downham Market that the RAF 's last bombing sortie of the European air war was flown on 2/3 May 1945. Between 1942 and 1945 at various times the airfield hosted six bomber squadrons: Nos 214, 218 and 623 were Main Force squadrons in No 3 Group, and then f rom March 1944 Nos 571, 608 and 635 were a part of the RAF's elite No 8 (Pathfinder) Group. 'Strike Hard' is not so much a chronological history, but a microcosm of Bomber Command during the war years. Supported by more than fifty photographs, maps and plans, each chapter focuses on a separate aspect of life on the airfield, and of the bomber operations flown from there. The author has drawn on a number of sources, ranging from official to published and private material, to give a fascinating depiction of a bomber airfield at war." Very small bump at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

ENIGMA: CODEBREAKING AND THE SECOND WORLD WAR., Hoare, Oliver, introduced and selected by.
288 Hoare, Oliver, introduced and selected by. ENIGMA: CODEBREAKING AND THE SECOND WORLD WAR.
Public Record Office, Richmond, 2002.
Collection of 16 facsimile documents in card case - in original publisher's shrinkwrap. ISBN 1903365406 "The story of Allied codebreaking during the Second World War is one of extraordinary complexity, significance and success. The centre of Brit ain's codebreaking operation was at Bletchley Park (the home of 'Station X' during the war), and it was here the codebreakers raced to decipher German military signals, in particular the 'unbreakable' naval Enigma codes. The special intelli g e n c e ( r eferred to as 'Ultra') that they provided had a major influence on the outcome of hostilities, most notably contributing to crucial successes in the Battle for the Atlantic. Despite Churchill's orders at the end of the war that all e vi de nc e re l at in g to codebreaking be destroyed, many papers, including internal histories, summaries, and copies of decrypts, did survive. Key documents from this unique archive - many of which have never been published before - are faithfull y r epr odu ce d i n thi s p ack, providing a fascinating introduction to Britain's cryptographic secrets of the Second World War." 208 pp, large 8vo (9" H). B&w photographs, map. "Like many of his friends, Charlie Hobbs was eager to join up when (WWII) broke out in 1939. Who wanted to take a bank manager's course when you could fly with the RCAF? After qualifying as an airgunner, Charlie sailed for England in 1941 and spent the next two years flying over Europe with the #83 and #207 squadrons. Leaves spent in London and with Aunt Jennie in Scotland provided welcome respites from the terrors of war for Charlie and his chum, Cam, and both looked as if they would be two of the lucky ones. Then Cam was shot down. Six months later, Charlie, too, was shot down in a fiery crash that killed his pilot. Reunited in the same POW camp, Charlie and Cam found themselves forced to plumb depths of resourcefulness they never knew they had, in circumstances they never knew existed. 'Charlie's Story' is all about hope, friendship and the strength of the human spirit." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very minor rubbing.

"The liberation of the Netherlands in 1944-45 ended five long years of hardship, oppression, and the indignity of armed occupation. The German occupation culminated in the 'Hunger Winter' of 1944-45 when, deprived of food and fuel, thousands in the heavily populated western Netherlands starved to death. Most of the Jewish community had died in Nazi concent r a t i o n c amps and thousands of men had been deported to Germany as forced labour. No wonder the liberation of the Netherlands by Canadian, British, American and Polish troops released a wave of unforgettable joy....Canadian soldiers recall th e ad va nc e ac r os s Belgium and the Netherlands as one of the most arduous and bitterely contested campaigns of the war. Often their tanks and heavy vehicles bogged down in the soggy terrain and the infantry had to advance on foot across the flo od ed pol der s and a lon g muddy dikes against well-defended German positions. To the soldiers, too, the liberation was a release from the terrors of war, and they joined gladly in the celebrations with the Dutch people. To most Canadians in 193 9 t he Neth erla nd s wa s a tin y far-away country about which they knew little. The momentous events of 1944-45 established a solid bond of affection between the two counties, strengthened after the war by the thousands of war brides and emigran ts w ho heade d for Ca nada. Th is al bum of words and pictures is published in a spirit of rememberance and celebration. Not only does it recapture the emotions of the Dutch at regaining their freedom, but it also commemorates a singular and no ble C ana dian a chieve ment ." London Michael Joseph 1982 0718117182 / 9780718117184 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good No Jacket
276 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), black covers with gold lettering on spine. B&w photographs, reproductions. "This book is mainly concerned with certain British propaganda activities during the Second World War which were classified as 'black'. The BBC's broadcasts to Germany and enemy-occupied Europe, also leaflets bearing the imprint of HM Government and dropped by the RAF, were all 'white'. Black operations, however, never indicated their British origin. Various clandestine broadcasting stations, all of them outside the control of the BBC, sought, sometimes with surprising success, to give the impression that they were actually operating inside Germany or elsewhere in Europe. Great pains were taken to disguise the fact that a strangely variegated range of black printed matter had not, in spite of its convincing appearance and, where necessary, bogus imprints, been produced in Germany, France, Belgium, etc. Indeed, it was all manufactered in London. Little of it was disseminated by the RAF since other and far more covert methods were performed."
