263 Harclerode, Peter. Foreword by General Sir John Hackett. ARNHEM: A TRAGEDY OF ERRORS.
London Caxton 2000 1840671467 / 9781840671469 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
192 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H). B&w photographs, maps. "Operation 'Market Garden' remains one of the most spectacular and controversial battles of the Second World War. It was a bold plan, aimed at shortening the course of the war dramatically. Key bridges in Holland seized in advance by a daring airborne 'coup de main' would be the means to a surprise thrust into the German industrial heartland. On the fiftieth anniversary of the operation, (the author) has pieced together an important new view of what was a considerable failure. Existing accounts direct most of the blame at XXX Corps, and two divisions in particular, for failing to push the ground advance forward. This new work sets out to provide an objective and realistic appraisal of why things went wrong - and who in truth should have borne the responsibility. Why, for example, were demands for proper signals equipment for the airborne troops ignored, with predictable consequences? Why was intelligence pointing towards the fatal presence of the 9th and 10th SS Panzer Divisions ignored before the operation? And why, with Allied air forces in a position to dominate the skies above the battlefield, was air support so lacking and ineffectual? While some of the questions needed for a definitive judgement can never be answered, this book represents an important step towards redressing the balance of criticism and allowing a new view of the bloody battles for Arnhem and Oosterbeek." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, very small hole in rear flap fold.

Seconded home in Aug./1944, he was attached to 168 Sqdn. RCAF in Ottawa, flying Canadian Forces mail across the Atlantic and up to the front lines. DUNKIRK: THE NECESSARY MYTH., Harman, Nicholas.
265 Harman, Nicholas. DUNKIRK: THE NECESSARY MYTH.
Hodder and Stoughton, London, 1980.
271 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 034024299X B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "(The author), in this long, close and hard look at one of the events which shaped the course of the war, cogently argues that if the ful l truth had been known at the time, the nation's exultation at its deliverance would have been greatly dimmed; and that the Dunkirk spirit, which helped to sustain the British people through five more hard years of war was to a considerable e x t e n t b ased on myth; necessary myth, which was eagerly embraced by a nation under the spell of Churchill's oratory. For while the soldiers, or most of them, displayed fortitude, there was deception and trickery, conflict and contradictory ord er s at t he po litical and high command level. It can be argued that in war it is sometimes necessary to deceive allies as well as enemies. The reader will be able to judge for himself the morality of actions taken by desperate men as catastrop he lo ome d e ver nea rer. Nicholas Harman scrutinises the Dunkirk affair at all its levels. He sees it through the eyes of Cabinet ministers and military commanders; from the naval angle and from the viewpoint of those who manned the 'little shi ps' ; a nd h e ha s re s earc hed a wealth of revealing anecdote about the confused, exhausted soldiers who made the long retreat to the port, and who, on arrival in Britain, were welcomed as if they had been conquerors." David & Charles, Newton Abbot, 1980.
160 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0715378570 B&w photographs. "Packed with authentic atmosphere, the retreat and the desperate lifting of the weary soldiers is seen in its tragic entirety, often through first-hand reco llections of the men who were there. The story of Dunkirk is a dramatic epic of courage and confusion, resulting in a successful and often heroic evacuation....(Harris) describes in vivid detail how the evacuation developed, on a day-by-d a y b a s i s , and destroys more than one of the myths that have come to be associated with Dunkirk. However, the spirit, humour and drama that epitomised what came to be known as the 'spirit of Dunkirk' was, and is, undeniable. Illustrated wit h ma n y co nt em po ra r y photographs, this book provides a complete historical account of the lifting of the British expeditionary force in the first week of June 1940...." 271 Harvey, J. Douglas. BOYS, BOMBS AND BRUSSELS SPROUTS: A KNEES-UP, WHEELS-UP CHRONICLE OF WWII.
Toronto McClelland and Stewart 1982 0771040482 / 9780771040481 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good-
210 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). "They called them the 'Brylcreem boys' - the young flyers who streamed into England from the first declaration of war, the kids with the jaunty grins and the willingness to take terrible risks. Among them were thousands of young Canadians, many barely out of high school, all delighted to leave behind humdrum lives in dusty, post-Depression Canada for the irresistible chance to learn to fly and help beat the Germans. Doug Harvey was one of them - a nineteen-year-old from Toronto who joined the RCAF, and in 1942 found himself a pilot in the elite Canadian No. 6 Bomber Group. (Here) is the fresh, frank, and often hilarious account of Harvey's experiences overseas. It is an unexpurgated description of what really happened to the group of young Canadian men who suddenly found themselves billeted in freezing Nissen huts in the lush English countryside - surround-ed by an unfamiliar people, whose customs puzzled and delighted them - and charged with the job of bombing Gemany into ruins. It is the chilling story of crews flying through the silent night skies, their lumbering Lancasters loaded with bombs, headed for unseen desinations hundreds of miles away. It is the jubilant story of the boys who made it safely home, mission accomplished, and the heart-breaking story of the thousands who didn't." Faint erased pencil narks at top corner of free front endpaper, light edge wear, book is slightly cocked, tiny foxing marks on top/bottom of text block. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, two edge tears archivally taped, light foxing on inside of spine, slight darkening to spine and some edges, tiny closed tear on front hinge, light rubbing and soiling.

273 Hatsuho Naito. Foreword by James Michener. Preface by Hachiro Hosokawa. Introduction by Boye De Mente. THUNDER GODS: THE KAMIKAZE PILOTS TELL THEIR STORY.
New York Kodansha 1989 0870119095 / 9780870119095 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
215 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). Map endpapers, b&w photographs, map. "(T)he compelling first-hand account of the pilots who pledged themselves to die for their emperor in the closing days of the Pacific War. Known to the world as kamikaze - divine wind - their suicide attacks on American naval forces caused panic and disruption, but they were born out of the desperation of the Imperial Command, determined to avoid the shame of surrender at any cost. Using as a rationale the loudly proclaimed belief that suicide attacks by Japanese pilots attested to the spiritual righteousness of Japan's struggle, the Command's exhortations convinced legions of young men of the virtue of volunteering for the Ohka program, in which flying bombs were constructed whose only guiding mechanism was their human cargo. The pilots are the thunder gods of the title, and this is the first time they have told their own story. (C)ombines military history, technical innovation, and the personal stories of men of whom something extraordinary was asked, men who died in futility or survived to reflect on their experiences with mixed feelings of pride, poignance and cynicism. These pilots were not fanatics or automatons, but sacrificial victims to the excesses of war. 'Thunder Gods' tells their story, and returns to them their humanity." Minor soiling on fore edge of text block. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has minor edge wrinkling .

"The real-life quest to free WWII planes (6 P-38 Lightnings and 2 B-17 Flying Fortress bombers), entombed within a Greenland glacier. They had become an Arctic legend. Tales of an entire squadron of war-birds from 1942 still sitting on the ice in Greenland were passed from one pilot to another. On a jaunt to the far north in 1980, two pilots from Atlanta, Georgia, heard the story and decided to look for the lost planes. What began as casual curiosity soon became a twelve-year adventure and a multimillion-dollar obsession. Here is the gripping, true story of how perseverance triumphed over seemingly impossible odds in pursuit of a dream." Slight bump at top of spine, very light wrinkling at bottom of spine. HITLER & GELI., Hayman, Ronald.
279 Hayman, Ronald. HITLER & GELI.
Bloomsbury, London, 1997, first edition.
240 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0747527237 B&w photographs, family tree. "Few people know about the affair Adolf Hitler had with his niece, Geli Raubal. It started in 1927, when he was thirty-eight and she was nine teen. Already leader of the National Socialist German Workers' Party, he had been imprisoned after the unsuccessful putsch of 1923, released at the end of 1924 and had been banned from speaking in public. It was then that he decided to rent a h o u s e in Obersaltzberg, an small alpine village close to the Austrian border. Geli came to live with him there, together with her mother, Angela Raubal, his widowed half-sister, but the ban was lifted before the Raubals moved in. Hitler could r e la x wi th his niece as he never had before with anyone else, and enjoyed her constant availability. He adored her and they could talk to each other uninhibitedly. The couple shared a strangely intense, passionate relationship, but it was al way s dog ge d b y H itler's intolerance, his chauvinistic attitude to womanhood and his possessive jealousy. A GREAT FLEET OF SHIPS: THE CANADIAN FORTS & PARKS., Heal, S.C.
280 Heal, S.C. A GREAT FLEET OF SHIPS: THE CANADIAN FORTS & PARKS.
Vanwell, St Catharines, Ontario, 1999, first edition.
312 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1551250233 B&w photographs, drawings, plus large fold-out plan: "General Arrangement Standard Steamer" in pocket at rear. "The era of the Canadian Forts and Parks has long since passed into history. While it lasted, it engaged a great deal of effort and capital on a scale never seen before in our country; from the men and women in the shipyards, to the crews who manned the ships, and the industrial leaders who transformed the s h i p y a r ds from very small-scale producers into world-scale shipbuilders for their day. By 1941 Canada's small shipbuilders had begun to turn out a fleet of 10,000- and 4,700-ton merchant ships which in every way were the equal of those from Br it is h an d Am erican shipyards. At the height of this great effort the Canadian yards were delivering one new ship every three days. Not only did we send to sea a large fleet of Park ships under the Canadian flag, manned by Canadian crews and ma nag ed by Ca na dia n managers, but we also bare-boat-chartered a similar size fleet of Fort sister ships for British management and operation. These Fort and Park ships were to be found in every theatre of war from 1942 on, at all times willi ng w orkh ors es of t he ocea ns, unheralded, unsung and later, like their crews, usually ignored by historians and government alike. While the postwar survivors of this fleet sailed under many flags, they did constitute an important element in reb uildi ng th e pe ace that fo llowe d. And now that Canada is no longer an owner of deep sea ships under the Canadian flag, it is timely that we remember our achievement of over fifty years ago. It was a unique undertaking that will never be repe ated i n a wo rld n ow s o diff eren t." M oderate bump at top of spine/rear hinge area.
