LIBERATION MISSION OF THE SOVIET ARMED FORCES IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR., Grechko, A.A., edited and with preface by.
261 Grechko, A.A., edited and with preface by. LIBERATION MISSION OF THE SOVIET ARMED FORCES IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR.
Progress Publishers, Moscow, (1979), 2nd printing.
446 pp, 8vo (8 1/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photos. "This is a book about the Soviet Armed Forces which fought heroically to defend the gains of the October Revolution and to save the Soviet people from being enslaved by nazism. They suffered enormous losses but conscientiously fulfilled their duty. During the war the Soviet Army fought gallantly for the freedom of other peoples. It rendered great assistance to many nations who had been suffering under nazi rule in deciding their destinies, and played the major part in routing nazi Germany and militarist Japan. The last chapter is devoted to the comradeship-in-arms of the armies of socialist countires and follows the development of their military alliance up to this da y. " Minor area of pencil erasure soiling on free front endpaper, excess cloth at bottom edge of front board - from manufacturing process, light wrinkle at top of spine. Dust jacket is price clipped, light soiling light browning - moderate on spine, a few tiny chips and tears, light edge wrinkling. VG-/G+

FLYING COLORS. FEATURING OVER 1300 MILITARY AIRCRAFT MARKINGS AND COLOR SCHEMES., Green, William and Swanborough, Gordon, compilers.
262 Green, William and Swanborough, Gordon, compilers. FLYING COLORS. FEATURING OVER 1300 MILITARY AIRCRAFT MARKINGS AND COLOR SCHEMES.
London Salamander 1997 086101944X / 9780861019441 Fine Very Good John Weal, Richard Caruana and Brian Knight.
207 pp, 4to (12" H). Profusely illustrated in colour. "Military aircraft have been variously daubed, cunningly camouflaged, boastfully personalized or otherwise extravagantly colored since they first took to the air more than 80 years ago. From the time that the identity of aircraft was established with national insignia, the markings of aircraft has become a science, and their decoration an art form. At times of tension, trends have been toward camouflage colors for concealment as international relationships deteriorated. Yet, in peace and war, there have also been 'anti-camouflage' color schemes applied specifically to render aircraft more conspicuous for training, rescue and other purposes. 'Flying Colors' is a superb survey of this fascinating scene, depicting more than 100 different aircraft types, from the World War I Spads to the modern swing-wing Tornado, in more than 1300 spectacular illustrations. Splendid use is made of finely detailed profile drawings, top and bottom, head-on and 'scrap' views, together with emblem and other detail enlargements, all in full-color and each extensively researched by the compilers and artists who have striven for accuracy and interest. Each first-class drawing is described, with identification of squadron, unit, theater and period, and often even the pilot's name and rank too! Recognized as a major landmark in aviation publishing, this volume will especially delight aircraft modelmakers and all enthusiasts of the dramatic history of warplanes." Dust jacket has moderate creasing at top of spine - very light wrinkling at top/bottom of flap-folds and at bottom of spine.

London Macdonald 1962 First Edition Very Good Very Good Peter Endsleigh Castle.
132 pp, 10" H. "(Describes) the deveopment and careers of the last of the fighting biplanes, the little Gloster Gladiator, which carried something of the First World War into that second epic struggle; that indomitable trio of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps fighters, the Wildcat, Hellcat and Corsair, which destroyed the myth of Japanese aerial invincibility founded by the Zero-Sen; the fighter versions of the Junkers Ju 88 whose nocturnal depredations in the R.A.F.'s bomber stream over the Third Reich were so impressive at one period of the War that the abandoning of large-scale night attacks on German targets was seriously considered; the highly manoeuvrable Macchi C.202 Folgore with its beautifully co-ordianted controls - a pilot's aeroplane in every respect; the Japanese Army's equivalent of the Zero-Sen, the Nakamima Ki.43 Hayabusa, and its successor, the Ki.84 Hayate which could out-climb and out-manoeuvre the most advanced versions of the Mustang and Thunderbolt; Heinkel's superlative He 219 night fighter which, but for ministerial muddle and confusion, would have provided the Allies with some serious headaches. These and many other fighters, both successful and unsuccessful, but all 'famous', are surveyed with hundreds of rare photographs, highly detailed full-page tone drawings by Peter Endsleigh Castle, and comparative side views of the many variants of each aircraft by Dennis I. Punnett." Very small bump at top of spine, very small dent/tear on spine near rear hinge, areas of minor browning on endpapers. SPITFIRE SQUADRON. STORIES OF THE SPITFIRE PILOTS OF WORLD WAR II., Guthrie, David, editor.

London Robert Hale 1978 0709167334 / 9780709167334 Reprint Very Good Very Good-
160 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). "These are the stories of the young men who flew the Spitfires of World War II. Written in spare moments between missions, they are first-hand accounts telling of the mingled fear and exhilaration of the dog-fight, the strain of waiting and the sudden frenzy of action at the 'scramble' signal; accounts full of audacity and innocence, courage and wry humour. The writers were not famous heroes, there were thousands like them with similar tales to tell. But these are the stories of Matthew, Derek and the rest of the men of Buster Squadron. The editor has appended to each story a short indication of the sort of man each pilot was: his background, his looks, his temperament, and in far too many cases his fate. But the men speak for themselves, and vividly recreate Britain's finest hour." Cigarette odour, minor edge wear to boards, book is slightly cocked. Dust jacket is price clipped, has very light browning/discoloration on spine, light browning at top edge, minor browning on rear panel, light edge wrinkling, very light rubbing - 2" line indentation on front panel.

F.S.P. - AN N.C.O.'s DESCRIPTION OF HIS AND OTHERS' FIRST SIX MONTHS OF WAR, JANUARY 1st - JUNE 1st 1940. (FIELD SECURITY PERSONNEL.), Gwynn-Browne, Arthur.
275 Gwynn-Browne, Arthur. F.S.P. - AN N.C.O.'s DESCRIPTION OF HIS AND OTHERS' FIRST SIX MONTHS OF WAR, JANUARY 1st - JUNE 1st 1940. (FIELD SECURITY PERSONNEL.)
London Chatto & Windus 1942 First Edition Very Good - Fair
159 pp, 7 1/2" H. "Sergeant Gwynn-Browne is in Field Security Personnel. He joined up 1939. Being a soldier is a new experience for him. 'F.S.P.' begins on a parade ground; it ends on Dunkirk beaches; in between it says a lot that has not been said before. Sergeant Gwynn-Browne is a character - (and) he is subtly and devastatingly and unexpectedly funny. The solemn and ceremonious business of standing in a line being counted is funny; so is the dubious pleasure of living on a Flemish farm with a 'very premeating little pig' as a co-billettee. Routine, discomfort, uncertainty, danger - they are all funny as Sergeant Gwynn-Browne sees them. But there is another side to the picture. There is Dunkirk with the soldiers waiting patiently on the beaches as the town blazes and the bombs fall. There is the 'honour and humanity' we are fighting for, and the new world we hope for. Indeed there is as much seriousness as of laughter in this book; and every reader will find himself in the company not only of a lively jester, but also of an original and thoughtful personality." Several small creases at bottom corner of title page - some indentation on a few subsequent pages, page leaf 13/14 has bee roughly trimmed at bottom edge, small shallow bump on front edge of spine, light edge wear, wrinkling at bottom and top of spine, light browning to edges of text block - small faint stain on top . Dust jacket is price-clipped, has a piece missing at bottom of front panel, several edge tears (one with old tape on inside) and edge chips light browning - a little more at edges and on spine, protected in a mylar sleeve.

ARNHEM LIFT - AND THE GERMAN VERSION. (NEW AND EXPANDED EDITION)., Hagen, Louis. Foreword by Lieutenant-General Sir Frederick A.M. Browning. (Winrich Behr.)
277 Hagen, Louis. Foreword by Lieutenant-General Sir Frederick A.M. Browning. (Winrich Behr.) ARNHEM LIFT - AND THE GERMAN VERSION. (NEW AND EXPANDED EDITION).
London Leo Cooper 1993 0850523753 / 9780850523751 New, Expanded and Revised Edition. Near Fine Very Good+
118 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs, maps. "The airborne troops who landed at Arnhem in September 1944 suffered appalling casualties in the course of the nine-day battle; of some 10,000 men who went into action, 1,400 were killed and more than 6,000 - about a thrid of them wounded - were captured. British accounts have almost invariably praised the Germans' humane treatment of these prisoners. Had the young Sergeant 'Lewis Haig' been captured, however, his fate would have been markedly different, for the Nazis would have reacted with characteristic savagery to a German of Jewish extraction fighting against them as a member of the elite Glider Pilot Regiment. But 'Haig' - Louis Hagen - was one of the few who got back, to write the first and, as is widely accepted, one of the very best personal accounts of the battle. Forty-five years after the battle, at a dinner party in Germany, the author found himself next to a man of about his own age, the former Major Winrich Behr who had been Adjutant to Field-Marshal Model during the Arnhem battle. The two men became friends. Louis Hagen's interest in the battle was rekindled and Behr told him his own side of the story, which is included here. Here, too, are balanced assessments of the planning and strategy of the operation, of the remarkable German reaction to the airborne incursion, and of the reasons for its failure." Very slight bump at bottom of rear hinge. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top of spine, minor rubbing.

160 pp, 7 3/4" H. B&w illustrations. "On 6 March 1936 was born one of the most famous and best-loved aeroplanes the world has ever known, the Spitfire. Just four years later its courageous young RAF pilots became the heroes of the Battle of Britain as they repelled the Luftwaffe attack. When, at the height of the conflict, supplies of metal for new Spitfires ran short, thousands of people donated old pots and pans for the sake of the gallant fighter. Today the Spitfire is still remembered with affection by all who flew in her. This tribute brings together a fascinating collection of writings by men who flew or admired her, from the top Allied flying ace of the Second World War, Air Vice Marshal 'Johnnie' Johnson, to his German counterpart, General Major Adolf Galland, and from such illustrious names as H.E. Bates, Richard Hillary, Lord Beaverbrook and Richard Dimbleby. As well as thrilling accounts of aerial combat the book includes a Battle of Britain chronology, a list of the twenty Spitfire squadrons and their bases, the plane's specifications, the story of its creation and a list of museums where Spitfires can now be seen." Hoo, Kent Grange 2002 184013478X / 9781840134780 First Edition Fine Very Good+
176 pp, 12 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs, drawings, reproductions. "(B)egins with the earliest pieces of Western artillery that were little more than iron tubes firing stone shot. Over the next few centuries the guns became more mobile and more powerful, influencing the course of the battles in which they were involved. Muzzle loaders reached their apogee in the Napoleonic wars and the American Civil War during the nineteenth century. By the outbreak of World War I in 1914, breech-loaded guns were the standard, and weapons of such large calibres were being constructed that they needed to be mounted on rail wagons to give them any form of mobility. Artillery played a significant role in shaping how that conflict was fought, and it was to play an equally signifi-cant role in World War II. Only now, in the twenty-first century, is the supremacy of artillery on the battlefield being challenged by air-dropped precision-guided weapons, but the arm is fighting back with sophisticated new munitions becoming available which will ensure that artillery has a part to play on the modern battlefield for the forseeable future." Chapter headings: Sighting Shots; The American Civil War; Storm of Steel, 1900-1935; Master of the Battlefield, 1936-1945; Cold War Killers; Glossary; Index. Book is fine. St Catharines, Ontario Vanwell 1995 1551250160 / 9781551250168 First Edition Fine Very Good
272 pp, 10" H. B&w photographs. "Compared to the well-published achievements of the Navy, Army and Air Force, an ocean of silence surrounds the long-gone Canadian Merchant Navy. And yet, Canada operated the wartime world's fourth largest Merchant Navy, almost all of it built in Canadian shipyards. Robert Halford provides an in-depth look at the Merchant Navy from its glorious beginnings to its unceremonious dissolution. During wartime, the merchant seamen were the heroes of the 1939-1945 war, the fourth arm of the Services. By 1948 they had undergone a quick image change, transformed from heroes to anonymous troublemakers hindering the shipping industry.
