STORIES OF KING ARTHUR AND HIS KNIGHTS., Crowlesmith, J., Rev.
263 Crowlesmith, J., Rev. STORIES OF KING ARTHUR AND HIS KNIGHTS.

172 pp, 7 1/2" H. Red boards with black lettering/illustration on spine and front board. Colour frontispiece, b&w illustrations. No date, but Xmas greetings on free front endpaper dated 1936. "The stories that follow are taken from Sir Thomas Malory's 'Morte D'Arthur', the great collection of romances about King Arthur which was written in the fifteenth century, and printed first of all by Caxton. Scholars say that Arthur was a British hero, one of the leaders of the Britons against the English invaders in the sixth century. In course of time legends centred round his name in the memory of the defeated race. To the original stories the Middle Ages added others, some of which belonged to later heroes, and, finally, these were combined with various legends of the Christian Church about the finding of the Holy Grail, the cup from which Christ is said to have drunk at the Last Supper with His disciples. Thus we get the beautiful cycle of romances which shines in the pages of Malory's great book. This version has been written for younger children. As far as possible the old-world style of Malory's narrative has been preserved, while the stories chosen are those which seem to present a message to youth." Contents: Introduction; The Sword in the Stone; King Arthur sees a Strange Knight; The Sword Excalibur; Balin, the Poor Knight; The Invisible Knight; The Battle of the Brothers; The Table Round; The Merciful Knight; The Death of Merlin; King Arthur and Accolon; The Lady of the Lake; The Marvellous Giant; The Two Giants; The Disguised Knight; The Shipwreck of Sir Lamorak; Launcelot and the Dragon; Sir Bors in the Castle Adventurous; Sir Gawaine's Rescue; The Knight with the Ugly Coat; Sir Tristram and King Mark; The Story of Sir Alisander; When Sir Launcelot was Mad; Seeking the Holy Grail; Sir Galahad's Shield; Sir Launcelot and the Holy Grail; Sir Percivale and the Lion; The Holy Grail is Seen; Fed by the Holy Grail; The Death of Sir Galahad; The Poisoned Apple; The Lady of Astolat; End of the Table Round; The Death of Arthur. 292 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Map endpapers, b&w photographs. "The second battle of Ypres provided the First Canadian Division with its baptism of fire, and it could not have been worse. They were holding a salient, jutting out so that they were targets from three sides. The Germans, for the first time ever, used chlorine gas, which turned the Canadians' bayonets green and destroyed their lungs. Then they discovered that in combat conditions their Ross rifles jammed, as the waves of Germans hit their trenches. At the end John McCrae looked across the battleground where so many hundreds of his countrymen had fallen, and wrote 'In Flanders Fields'. Back in Canada, the war began in earnest the day the casualty lists were posted. ARCHITECTURE IN ENGLAND., Daniels, Jeffery. Drawings by Leonora Ison.
270 Daniels, Jeffery. Drawings by Leonora Ison. ARCHITECTURE IN ENGLAND.
Weidenfeld & Nicolson (Educational), London, 1968.
128 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 298762102 B&w drawings, floor plans, elevations. "Illustrated with over 70 line drawings and plans, the text spans over 2,000 years of architecture in England. The account begins with a discussion of the villas, camps and roads of Roman Britain, and shows how this heritage slowly decayed, giving way to the Romanesque imported by the conquering Normans. The soaring Gothic of the middle ages yields in its turn to another E u r o p e a n influence, the Renaissance, which acquires its own English character. The Baroque, Pallandian and Neo-Classic movements are then analysed, and the survey is brought right up to date with the industrial and scientific revolutions of t he n in et ee nt h and twentieth centuries, and their effects on techniques and styles. Dominant architectural styles are fully defined and illustrated, and the many examples given will stimulate a study in depth by means of visits to churches, ho use s, cas tle s, mus eu ms and modern streets and office blocks. The special value of this book for the student of architecture is the care taken by the author to illustrate his text at every point, with examples drawn from every field of arch itec ture - eccl esia sti cal and secular, domestic and institutional." 272 Davies, Russell. (Ronald Searle.) RONALD SEARLE: A BIOGRAPHY.
London Sinclair-Stevenson 1990 1856190048 / 9781856190046 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Ronald Searle.
192 pp, 4to (11 1/8" H). Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with photographs and reproductions. "Born in 1920 in Cambridge, (Ronald Searle) became a regular contributor to the Cambridge Daily News in 1935, financed his own night-school studies in drawing and won an art-school scholarship. The war shattered the university-town idyll. In 1942 Searle was captured by the Japanese at Singapore and later put to work on the terrible 'Death Railway' from Siam to Burma. His remarkable eye-witness drawings, achieved with very scant materials, constitute a uniquely important documentary record of the horrors of those times. The post-war years found him in London. As creator of St Trinian's and delineator of Nigel Molesworth, he was a feted London celebrity in the Fifties. His tremendous appetite for work did not, however, save him from involvement in some peculiar situations. Searle's participation in the 1956 Suez Affair, detailed here for the first time, is one of the book's many surprises. In 1961, (he) abandoned the life he had built, moved to France and started again. Living with his second wife in a remote village in Haute-Provence, he has continued to delight and disturb the world with a stream of images that mocks with the best intentions: to make people laugh, and to entice them, through their laughter, to share his own critical vision of the world. Ronald Searle allowed Russell Davies special access to his archive, and has approved the selection of his work that helps to tell his story." 1" split in cloth at bottom of front hinge, very small bump at top corner of boards. Dust jacket has some very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor browning at top edge.

B&w illustrations, 3 maps (2 double-page). "This volume contains nearly complete transcriptions of the extant journals kept by John Franklin during his expedition to the unknown northern coast of the North American continent in the years 1819 to 1822. Only a few abstracts and tables of observations from the extant journal books have been excluded, and they, for the most part, are available in the appendices to Franklin's published 'Narrative of a Journey to the Shores of the Polar Sea in the Years 1819, 20, 21, and 22'. The present volume also includes transcriptions of a selection of correspondence written during the preparation for and execution of Franklin's first expedition. While most of the letters included here were written by Franklin, some were written by other correspondents to Franklin. A few highly selective pieces were neither written nor recieved by Franklin, but bear special relevance to letters that Franklin wrote. The Introduction provides short biographies of some of the men involved, and then establishes an historical context in which to situate the 1819-22 expedition. The sources of the various documents are next identified, followed by an attempt to understand what brought about the deaths of 11 out of 20 men under Franklin's leadership." Some minor wrinkling to fore-edge of some pages.

261 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0785812083 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps/battle plans, cartoons, drawings. "Drawing on the mastery of technical detail he displayed so brilliantly in 'Bomber' (the s tory of an RAF bombing raid), (Deighton) gives us an altogether factual and comprehensive picture of the men, the machines, the strategies (and the blunders), and the events on both sides. He shows us the British squandering precious fighter pl a n e s in a futile effort to halt the German blitzkrieg in France, and the Germans refusing to believe in the effectiveness of British radar. He compares the fire power, combat tactics, and ground control, analyzing the performance of both the pl an es ( th e Messerschmitt broke up in mid-air more often than the Spitfire) and the pilots (men such as the fabled Douglas Bader, who flew better with two artificial legs than other men with two real ones; or 'Onkel Theo' Osterkamp, a WWI German a ce who be cam e an ace in WWII as well, until he was finally ordered off combat flying at the age of forty-eight). We see the British General Staff divided against itself (after the Battle, the man most responsible for the British victory - Sir Hu gh Dowd ing , C om mander in Chief, Fighter Command - was dismissed); the German High Command, unsure of its objectives; exaggerated British claims (and an almost fatal shortage of pilots); and German technical superiority that was continually und erc ut by Nazi in c ompetence."
