St. Catharines, Ontario Vanwell 2002 1551250616 / 9781551250618 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
664 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Map endpapers. B&w photographs, b&w and colour maps, colour plates. "In April 1943, the Royal Canadian Navy assumed responsibility for Canadian Northwest Atlantic Command, the only operational area to be run by a Canadian Commander-in-Chief during the Second World War. (This book) describes the RCN's long, challenging journey from the outbreak of the war in September 1939 to the momentous events of Spring 1943. Based on extensive research in Canadian, British, American and German archives, (it) describes the mobilization of the naval service during the first half of the war, measures its response to the demanding, ever-changing strategic situations that confronted the Allies, and analyses the service of our ships and sailors on the North Atlantic, Pacific and Mediterranean seas as well as the defence of Canadian waters. With the main focus on the Battle of the Atlantic, this important and well-illustrated history demonstrates how Canadian naval forces proved indispensable to victory in that most critical campaign of the Second World War." Minor wrinkle at top of spine; place, date and signature in ink on free front endpaper. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing.

242 Douglas-Hamilton, James. Introduction by Laddie Lucas. THE AIR BATTLE FOR MALTA: THE DIARIES OF A FIGHTER PILOT.
Wrens Park, n.p., 2000, reprint.
150 pp, large 8vo (9 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0905778456 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "For both the Axis and Allied Powers, Malta was a vital key to victory - not only in the Mediterranean, but in North Africa and the Middle East as well. In this new edition of his highly-praised book....(the author) provides one of the most intriguing and realistic accounts of the struggle for possession of the island, a fight to the death which lasted two-and-a-ha l f y e a r s , during which time 14,000 tons of bombs were dropped on a defiant population. The book is largely based on the diaries of Lord David Douglas-Hamiton, the author's uncle, who was sent out to Malta as a Spitfire Squadron Leader at a ti me wh en t he i sl and was sustaining heavier bombing than London at the height of the Blitz, and the Axis forces were preparing for invasion. The author's scrupulous research, combined with his uncle's uniquely authoritative viewpoint, vivid ly rec r eat es the pe rio d, the comradeship and the grimness of life on the beleaguered island. The air battle, which was the second largest of the entire war, involved some of the most famous fighter aces of World War II, including 'Screwball' Beu rlin g and Lad die Luca s. The y all played a vital part in what proved to be one of the greatest defensive and strategic operations of all time, and their exploits, along with those of many others, are recorded here, a reminder of their indomit able spir it in the face of a ppa llin g odds." THE ARROW., Dow, James.
244 Dow, James. THE ARROW.
Toronto James Lorimer 1979 0888622811 Hard Cover Very Good Good+
160 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "The Arrow (supersonic fighter) appeared on Avro's drawing boards in 1952 and was in the air by 1958. Test flights were a great success, and five aircraft had flown by 1959. Then came the dramatic decision whose rationale was not made public at the time, and which even now seems obscure. The Arrow was cancelled, and everything to do with it, including the planes that had already flown, was broken into scrap. Nothing was to remain. To tell the story of the Arrow, James Dow explores the impressive experience of Canada's aircraft industry, created from virtually nothing during the Second World War by C.D. Howe and recruits from the business world. Avro was put together when the government aircraft companies were sold off at the war's end. Avro's first postwar project was the Jetliner, conceived in 1945 for Air Canada (then TCA). It was very nearly the world's first passenger jet, and was first in the air in August 1949 only days behind Britain's Comet. Avro's military experience came with the CF-100 Canuck fighter, which flew first in 1951. There was even an experimental flying saucer, built for the U.S. armed forces. The Arrow was to be the culmination of this experience and this success." Previous owner's place, date and signature in ink on front free endpaper; some light toning to endpapers and to edges of text block, very tiny bump at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light to moderate rubbing, several small tears with creases at top edge, light edge wear, one small edge chip, protectedin a mylar sleeve.

"(The Luftwaffe looked) into the possibility of producing inexpensive aircraft which, however, would have enough power to quickly engage the enemy formations. Consequently, the machines which were created were predominantly made of wood, a raw material not important to the war effort. Assembly and construction were kept as simple as possible. In this way these machines could be completed without affecting the already overloaded industry. The rocket motor was a natural choice for a power plant due to its high performance. The take-off and landing procedures were kept simple to avoid long training periods for pilots. Take-off was accomplished via a tow or the vertical take-off. Landing was made on skids or the fighter abandoned and the pilot and important components (e.g. motor, weapons systems) recovered by parachute. What follows is the history of t he development of these technically highly-interesting aircraft." Inside - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor wear at top/bottom of spine.

McClelland & Stewart, (Toronto, 1999), Ist printing.
342 pp, large 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0771029292 B&w photographs. "It was probably the most important battle of the Second World War. The German attempt to stem the vital trans-Atlantic flow of men and supplies to Britian would cost the Allies more than 2,600 merchant ships, 30,000 merchant seamen's lives, 5,000 aircrew, and about 2,500 aircraft. The battle ranged across the ocean: from the waters of the St. Lawrence, throught the treacherous open sea of the North Atlantic, to the fjords of Norway and the Bay of Biscay. Spencer Dunmore traces the complete history of the Battle of the Atlantic, giving equal time to all aspects of the conflict: in the air, on the water, and below its surface...tells the story from the perspective of both sides, and includes the first-hand accounts of individual participants, both Allied and German..." 257 Easton, Alan. Foreword by Rear-Admiral K.L. Dyer. 50 NORTH: AN ATLANTIC BATTLEGROUND. (CANADA'S ATLANTIC BATTLEGROUND.)
Toronto Ryerson Press 1963 First Edition. Hard Cover Very Good Fair Inscribed By Author
287 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). Inscribed on front free endpaper: "Archie Whelan / This describes a very different / environment in which you / & I worked together, but I / hope you'll like reading about it. / Your old friend / Alan Easton. / March 1963." B&w illustrations. "In this exciting book, Lieutenant-Commander Alan Easton of the Royal Canadian Navy Reserve tells of his experiences during the Second World War. The first ship he commanded was a corvette with faulty engines. His second corvette saw convoy action and battled both German U-boats and bad weather. Then Easton was given command of a destroyer which saw action in the English Channel on the day of the Normandy invasion. Easton gives a thrilling and detailed account of this successful naval engagement. But '50 North' is as much concerned with everyday life on board small warships as it is with the Atlantic battle as a whole. For this reason (it) is the first Canadian book of its kind. Easton is able to portray with vividness the seamen under him, their minor quarrels as well as the more important problems which occasionally develop between the crew and the commanding officers." PAUL NASH: THE MASTER OF THE IMAGE, 1889-1946., Eates, Margot.
258 Eates, Margot. PAUL NASH: THE MASTER OF THE IMAGE, 1889-1946.
John Murray, London, 1973.
156 pp, 4to (11 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w and colour reproductions, b&w photographs. "Paul Nash was always a leading and often a controversial figure in modern English art. His complete integrity of vision, his sturdy individualism and his remarkable ability to evoke the indwelling spirit of his subject - a quiet woodland scene, a menacing prehistoric site, a strange 'objet trouve' or 'monster' bombers on the ground or in the air - set him somewhat apart from his contemporarie s. In its later phases his work was marked by a degree of intuitive vision which may well explain why he never adhered closely to any school or sought to found one himself. Despite this apparent isolation, or perhaps even because of it, his co n t r i bution to the art of the twentieth century was both vital and unique. No full scale study of his life and work has appeared for nearly twenty years and the Paul Nash Trustees felt that the time had come for a reappraisal of his achievement. Th ey a ccordingly invited Margot Eates, who had edited the 'Paul Nash Memorial Volume' and knew him well towards the end of his life to undertake this new, fully illustrated monograph. In it she traces Paul Nash's artistic development in relatio n to hi s b ackground and personality, and in a long appendix has attempted the difficult task of producing a workable chronology covering over one thousand of his recorded paintings and drawings." Slight musty odor to pages, small light dust mar k on b otto m of text block, a few tiny light marks on top of textblock, small heavy dent on front board - migrates lightly into first few pages. Dust jacket has light wrinkling on spine and parts of rear panel, small closed perforation on front p an el, l ight edge wrinkling at top edge, light wear/wrinkling with tiny tears/chips at top of hinges and flap-folds, rear panel color has light to moderate fading, slight browning and soiling. 259 Edmond, Lauris. BONFIRES IN THE RAIN.
Bridget Williams, (Wellington, 1991).
241 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), soft cover. B&w photographs. The second volume of New Zealand poet Lauris Edmond's autobiography. "For Lauris Edmond this was married life in its time of greatest fulfilment, with six children in a small New Zealand country town in the fifties. They were rich years, full of laughter and friendship and solidity - the way, she supposed, women's lives were meant to be. But dreams and expectations change, the experiences of loss and uncertainty impinge, and as the sixties became the seventies the world shifted on its axis. Women everywhere were questioning the old, familiar loyalties; for Lauris there was no ignoring the promptings of a talent - and a way of being - too long supressed...the remarkable account of a woman's journey from conformity to a tentative and painful independence; of the growth and death of a marriage, and the questioning and discovery of self. Eloquent and assured, this is autobiography at its most revealing, and confirms Lauris Edmonds as an outstanding prose writer." Interior - slight waviness to top of approx. pages 170 - 225, previous owners name on inside of front cover, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - minor edge wear, two soft creases on front cover, book slightly cocked, spine uncreased. VG-
