Also new is a complete list of USAF missions flown out of Kadena, detailing duration, pilots, Reconnais s a n c e S y s tems Officers, altitude, etc. It is a fascinating addition to the history of operational flights over North Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, North Korea, Yemen, the Lebanon, Libya, Egypt, Syria, Iran and Cuba....Also revealed are details o f fl ig ht s c on du ct ed from Beale AFB, in California and RAF Mildenhall, Suffolk, England, into the Arctic Circle and over the Baltic to monitor the movements of Soviet nuclear submarines. But could he handle the good keen girl whom he b rough home as the Mistress of Blackrange Station? Born under Virgo (his fortunate gemstone was the sardonyx) Kersey Hooper married a Capricorn. It should have been OK, because at their first contact the planets Mars, Uranus and Pluto were a l l w i t h in the orbs of a conjunction in the Twelfth House of the Ingress Map, and the Vernal Equinox was happening at the time. It should have been OK. But what actually happened to Kersey and Faith wasn't in the 'Astrological Almanac' - a n d, w ha t i s mo re , farm-management under the rules of the Zodiac wasn't nearly as easy as it looked...." 230 D'Este, Carlo. FATAL DECISION: ANZIO AND THE BATTLE FOR ROME.
HarperCollins, New York, 1991, book club edition.
566 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "By taking advantage of Allied command of the sea and air to effect complete surprise, infantry and armored forces landing at Anzio on January 22 were expected to secure a beachhead and then push inland to cut the two main highways and railroads supplying the German armies to the south, either trapping and annihilating them or forcing them to withdraw north and opening the way to R o m e . S u c h was the plan. What really happened, brilliantly told by Carlo D'Este, was a near disaster for the Allies and the unfortunate soldiers involved. Doomed by uncertain leadership at the highest levels, including Churchill's pressure an d me dd l in g, G en eral Sir Harold Alexander's lack of firm directives, and General Mark Clark's unwillingness to risk defeat or push a tired General John Lucas, the Anzio beachhead became a death trap, with Allied troops forced to fight for the ir li ves f o r f ive dr ead ful months in a throwback to the trench warfare of World War I. Even the enventual Allied victory, when the Germans finally gave way in May 1944, was tarnished by Clark's ambition to be first in Rome instead of a ttem pti ng t o cu t o ff and des troy or capture fleeing German troops...." 312 pp, 8 5/8" H. Burgundy cloth with black title block, gilt lettering/banding on spine, gilt lettering/banding on front board - one of the Coles Canadian Collection. Fold-out map. A facsimile of the edition published by Cassell and Company, London, 1916. "When Inspector Burton Deane left for Regina in 1883 to join the staff of the headquarters of the Royal North-West Mounted Police, he was told in Ottawa that he would find the Mounties an 'armed mob'. He was not disappointed. The ten-year-old force did not have one standing order or regulation, and it was his responsibility to compose regulations for the force, and to establish Mounted Police law. As adjutant to the commissioner and supervisor of the Regina post, he was responsible for establishing all administrative procedure, and he was always at the nerve-centre of every major development on the Prairies in those years. He administered the white man's dealings with the Indians, and in 1885 the captured Riel was put in his custody. His intimate contact with his prisoner makes fascinating reading. But shortly afterward, conflict with the controversial and difficult new commissioner, Lawrence Herchmer, led to his transfer to Lethbridge, where he was Supervisor for 'fourteen happy years'. His ardent persecution of cattle and horse thieves and smugglers led him to arrest a good friend of a Dominion Cabinet minister, winning him a transfer to the remote and tiny outpost of Maple Creek. There he patrolled a large section of the Canadian Pacific Railway, until friendlier forces in government assigned him to command of the post at Calgary." Faint line indentation across spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, knife cut across spine - archivally taped on inside, very small tear at bottom of rear flap-fold - archivally taped.

DeLeo's single-engine plane encountered turbulence, and he and his two passengers crashed in the mountains. All three survived the accident but sustain e d m u l t i p le injuries. It w as al re ad y wi nt er; he left the limited emergency supplies with the plane's passengers; and he was hampered by his injuries, but DeLeo was determined to get help. He found or improvised shelter at night, carefully warmed himself during the day tim e , d ran k f ro m s mal l pools of melted snow and ice, and slowly but steadily made his way toward civilization. Suffering from exhaustion and on the verge of collapse, he found a hot spring that provided him with temporary warmth and ins ects to ea t. Inju ries , d ehyd rati on, malnutrition, and a two-day blizzard slowed him, and a rockslide nearly killed him just as he glimpsed the valley and highway that he so desperately sought, but De Leo's courage saw him through....Peter DeL eo te lls his re marka ble s tory in g rippi ng detail.
