429 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0340270853 B&w photographs, maps. "How the British Army contributed to the Allies' eventual victory against the Axis powers is a remarkable story of apparent defeat turned into ultimat e victory...David Fraser discusses every major campagin fought by the British Army in the Second World War. As a young serving officer during the war, and ultimately reaching the highest reaches of the army, he has been able to bring pers o n a l e x p e rience to his account as well as drawing on many hitherto unpublished sources. The narrative has been enriched by critical and pungent comment..." Slight cigarette odor, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. KNIGHT'S CROSS: A LIFE OF FIELD MARSHAL ERWIN ROMMEL., Fraser, David.
222 Fraser, David. KNIGHT'S CROSS: A LIFE OF FIELD MARSHAL ERWIN ROMMEL.
New York HarperCollins 1993 0060182229 / 9780060182229 Book Club Edition Very Good Very Good
601 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "(S)hows how inspiringly spontaneous and superficially haphazard Rommel's style of leadership could be: 'Rommel believed that war is a reckless, untidy business, and that the habits of mind of a methodical manager are alien to what is required'. Instead, his hallmarks were boldness of manoeuvre, ferocity of attack, and tenacity in pursuit. These were the qualities he displayed in his great battles in the North African desert; they were, David Fraser demonstrates, evident from his earliest battles in the First World War to his last, defending Fortress Europe from the Allied invasion of 1944. Rommel reached a position in which he almost inevitably became embroiled in politics. When he realized that the Allied invasion was going to succeed, he realized also that the only way to save Germany was somehow to negotiate a peace settlement. He tried to present Hitler - to whom he had always been devoted, and who had always shown him a particular respect and affection - with the military realities: he was branded a defeatist and ignored. But his opinions, and his apparent links (meticulously discussed by Fraser) with the Stauffenberg plotters of July 1944 - one of them, under interrogation, mentioned Rommel as a possible head of post-Hilterian Gemany - condemned him is the eyes of the Fuhrer he had served so loyally. He was offered the choice of trial by a People's Court - a sham of course - or suicide, a state funeral and protection for his family. He chose the latter. Rommel is not, to David Fraser, a flawless hero: his failings as well as his genius are recorded here. But he had that instinct for battle and leadership which set him apart from his contemporaries and places him among the great commanders." Light browning at bottom edge of rear board, very light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light rubbing on rear panel, light wrinkling at top/bottom of hinges and flap-folds, tiny tear with wrinkles at bottom edge of rear flap.

225 Fredette, Raymond H. Introduction by Tom D. Crouch. Foreword by Hanson W. Baldwin. Afterword by Marshal of the Royal Air Force Sir John Slessor. THE SKY ON FIRE: THE FIRST BATTLE OF BRITAIN 1917-1918 AND THE BIRTH OF THE ROYAL AIR FORCE.
Washington, D.C. Smithsonian 1991 1560980168 / 9781560980162 Reprint. Very Good
289 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs, maps, reproductions. "World War I in the air is popularly recalled as a romance of dawn patrols and chivalrous duels between Spads and Fokkers over the Western Front. All but forgotten are the day and night raids German airmen carried out against England with large bombers during 1917-1918. Based on firsthand accounts from British and German sources, (this book) explores all aspects of the first systematic strategic air campaign in history, including the impact it had on the strategy and conduct of World War II. The daring airmen who pioneered this new mode of warfare flew twin-engined Gotha and Giant bombers. Their raids on London spurred the British to create the Royal Air Force, the world's first independent air service, and the London Air Defense Area. Except for some technological refinements, notably radar, it was essentially the same air defense system that was to serve Britain so well in World War II." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very light edge wear, very light rubbing with a few tiny scuffs, soft corner creases on front cover, minor soiling.

311 pp, 4to (11 1/6" H). B&w photographs, maps, color profiles. "Charting the remarkable record of the 8th Air Force from its creation in 1942, through its fundamental role in taking the battle to Hitler's Germany when it became the largest air unit ever committed to battle, to its departure from the United Kingdom after victory had been achieved, this comprehensive history explains the formation strategies and aircraft deployed and does so with extensive use of the reminiscences of veterans of 'The Eighth'. Historians are united in acknowledging the vital part played by the 8th Air Force in securing the Allied success and, as the heroic events of the conflict are commemorated half a century later, this book which first coined the admirable, and now universally accepted, prefix 'MIGHTY', returns to print to remain the finest tribute to the airmen who knew their task, undertook it with determination, and successfully completed it." BLACK MAY., Gannon, Michael.
233 Gannon, Michael. BLACK MAY.
HarperCollins, New York, 1998, first edition.
492 pp, large 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0060178191 B&w photographs. "In May 1943, Allied sea and air forces won a stunning, dramatic, and vital victory over the largest and most powerful submarine force ever sent to sea, sin king forty-one German U-boats and damaging thirty-seven others. It was the forty-fifth month of World War II, and by the end of May the Germans were forced to acknowledge defeat and recall almost all of their remaining U-boats from the major t r a f f i c lanes of the North Atlantic. At U-Boat Headquarters in Berlin, despondent naval officers spoke of 'Black May'. It was a defeat from which the German U-boat fleet never recovered. 'Black May' is a triumph of scholarship and narrativ e , an i mp or ta nt work of history, and a great sea story. (The author) has done enormous research and produced the most thoroughly documented study ever done of these battles. In his compelling historical saga, the people are as significant as t he te chn ica l i nfo rmation. Given the strategic importance of the events of May 1943, it is natural to ask, How did Black may happen and why? Who or what was responsible? Were new Allied tactics adopted or new weapons employed? This book ans wer s th ose ques tion s an d many others. Drawing on original documents in German, British, U.S., and Canadian archives, as well as interviews with surviving participants, Gannon describes the exciting sea and air battles, frequently taking th e re ader insi de t he U- boats them selves, aboard British warshps, onto the decks of torpedoed merchant ships, and into the cockpits of British and U.S. aircraft. Throughout, Gannon tells the Black May story from both the German and Allied pers pecti ves, often using the a ctual words of captains and crew. Finally he allows the reader to 'listen in' on secretly recorded conversations of captured U-boat men in POW quarters during the same incredible month, giving intimate and moving acces s to t he th oughts and e motions of se amen t hat is unparalleled in naval literature." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, small slight bump at top edge of front board and at top of rear hinge, minor browning at some edges, short remainder mark on botto m of te xt bloc k. Dust jacket has mi nor edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, three small marks (color pencil) on inside surface. Very Good/Very Good+

LETTERS HOME: THE WARTIME CORRESPONDENCE AND DIARY OF JOHN EDWIN GARDINER RCAF (1919-1942)., Gardiner, John Edwin. Edited by David E. Smith.
236 Gardiner, John Edwin. Edited by David E. Smith. LETTERS HOME: THE WARTIME CORRESPONDENCE AND DIARY OF JOHN EDWIN GARDINER RCAF (1919-1942).
Regina, Saskatchewan University of Regina / Canadian Plains Research Center 2004 088977157X / 9780889771574 Near Fine
197 pp, 8vo (9" H). B&w photographs. "John Edwin Gardiner was the eldest son of James 'Jimmy' Gardiner, the most prominent Liberal politician of his day in western Canada. Edwin was called up by the RCAF in November 1940, received his Wings in October 1941, and travelled to England in early November 1941. On August 18, 1942, on the eve of the Dieppe Raid, Edwin wrote to his father: 'At long last we're going to take part in something big which you will read all about in the papers long before you get this letter'. Edwin Gardiner was killed when his plane went down on the following day. James Gardiner, who had lost two brothers in the First World War, had now lost his son to war. His wife, Violet, found the grief unbearable and took her own life in October 1944, yet another casualty of war. Gardiner kept all of Edwin's letters to the family. He investigated the circumstances of his son's death, visiting the graveyard at St. Aubin Le Cauf on several occasions and writing a thorough record of his findings. To the end of his life, he maintained contact with the family of the Canadian pilot who died at the same time as Edwin and with the French family who cared for their graves. John Edwin Gardiner's voice in 'Letters Home' is engaging, humorous, and intelligent. Like so many others of his generation, he exudes confidence and optimism despite the dangers of his situation. Perhaps most striking, and most touching, however, is the genuine family affection that pervades these letters."

SECRET SOLDIERS: THE STORY OF WORLD WAR II's HEROIC ARMY OF DECEPTION., Gerard, Philip.
237 Gerard, Philip. SECRET SOLDIERS: THE STORY OF WORLD WAR II's HEROIC ARMY OF DECEPTION.
Dutton, New York, 2002, first edition.
400 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 052596640 B&w photographs, reproductions. "(T)he incredible story of an extraordinary group of American artists, designers, and engineering wizards who became America's unsung heroes o f the Second World War....The men of the 23d Headquarters Special Troops were recruited to become phantom warriors in a ghost army to help win the Battle of Europe. They fought in more campaigns, from D-Day to the Rhine River, with more All i e d a r m i es, than any other unit in the European Theater of Operations - yet not even their fellow American soldiers were aware of their presence. After Douglas Fairbanks Jr., USNR, completed a tour of England and its special forces installat io ns , t he H ol ly wood star convinced the Navy brass to train an elite unit that eventually evolved into the only Army force of its kind - a top-secret band of unknown heroes. These elite soldiers counted among their number designer Bill Blass and pa in te r E lls wor th Kelly, and were inspired by Hilton Howell Railey, the 'P.T. Barnum of Deception'. The Special Troops' mission was twofold: to deceive the German army into believing that the Allies possessed more troops and materiel tha n th ey a ctu all y di d an d, e ven more heroically, to draw enemy fire on their position to allow other units to advance free of lethal resistance. Through the art of camouflage, sonic deception, and illusion this extraordinary troops of brave, ingen ious men save d cou ntles s Ame rica n lives - while sometimes losing their own. From the use of inflatable rubber tanks and howitzers to elaborate sound effects, fake radio transmissions, special effects artillery fire, and other elements of stage craft , th ese s hadow soldie rs put thei r lives on the line for their brother soldiers and for their country - only to disappear from history and memory." 224 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). B&w maps, photographs. "(O)ffers snapshots of UK air defences at ten-yearly intervals, detailing how each (new) threat was perceived and what the response to it was, with a critique of that response and subsequent orders of battle to demonstrate how air defence evolved in real terms. In-depth reviews of the major examples over 75 years include the first German raids on Britain and the development of anti-aircraft artillery; the appearance of German Heinkel and Dornier bombers in the 1930s and the design of the Hurricane and Spitfire to defeat this threat; and the defence against Soviet Cold War bombers in the form of the Hunter and Bloodhound. The result is a progressive history that concludes with the state of current defences and thoughts for the future: how will emerging challenges to the UK and NATO be met and countered? Illustrated with a wide range of photographs of the weapons systems deployed through three quarters of a century, this is an usual and perceptive new assessment, with particular value in this anniversary year for the RAF." SURVIVOR'S STORY., Gibbs, Gerald, Air Marshal Sir.
239 Gibbs, Gerald, Air Marshal Sir. SURVIVOR'S STORY.
London Hutchinson 1956 First Edition Good Fair
182 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). B&w photographs, maps. "Distinguished survivor of the early flying days and of many campaigns, (the author) was the last British Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Air Force. This is the story not only of his own long and exciting years of service in many parts of the world, but also of the Air Force itself, from the time of the Flying Corps to the present day. In this book he strikes a new and very readable line among senior Air Force writers for he does not forget to give due place to the lighter and social side. His accounts of those early days, when he served with the R.F.C. at Aboukir, are both inspiring and amusing. After the First World War (he) had a highly eventful spell of service in Iraq, Palestine, and Transjordan, and later, in the early 1930's, he went to Kenya and the Sudan. He has many good big-game stories to tell, and many valuable comments to make, also, upon conditons in these troubled regions. A high-spot of his book is his account of the Battle of Britain, throwing as it does considerable light upon the controversies regarding R.A.F. tactics and control. He had wide personal experience, too, of the war in Burma, and was also present at Singapore when the Japanese surrendered. After the war, before his final appointment in India, he spent three years on United Nations work in the U.S.A., and he writes of America, as of India, with a sympathy born of intimate knowledge". Light scattered foxing on end papers and on edges of text block, very small stain on rear free end paper, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light browning on edges of text block and edges of boards. Dust jacket has edge creasing, several chips and small edge pieces missing, several small and tiny edge tears, light browing, very light tiny foxing marks on rear panel and flap-folds.

240 Gibbs, Patrick, Wing Commander. NOT PEACE BUT A SWORD.
London Grub Street 1993 0948817682 / 9780948817687 Revised Edition Near Fine Very Good+ Chris Thomas, cover art.
256 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs. "After a short spell in a light bomber squadron flying Hawker Harts, (Gibbs) was transferred to the Fleet Air Arm, serving on the aircraft carriers 'Furious' and 'Courageous' , mastering the Shark and Swordfish. Another move took Gibbs to Gosport as a flying instructor, before he eventually joined a torpedo squadron. His readable and entertaining narrative describes a rapid and eventful progression from cadet to Flight Commander of a Beaufort squadron, whilst also giving a clear impression of the society he lived in and the RAF itself, struggling to come to terms with the dramatic changes war wrought upon a once peaceful country. (A)lso illustrates Gibbs' increasing dedication to the airborne torpedo as a means for attacking coastal shipping. His articulate account - the vivid impression of a young airman at war - conveys a clear picture of the evolving tactics of Beaufort squadrons as they adapted swiftly to changing circumstances and demands." Soft crease at top corner of free rear endpaper. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very light rubbing to glossy surfaces.
