203 Davies, Russell. (Ronald Searle.) RONALD SEARLE: A BIOGRAPHY.
London Sinclair-Stevenson 1990 1856190048 / 9781856190046 First Edition Very Good Very Good Ronald Searle.
192 pp, 4to (11 1/8" H). Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with photographs and reproductions. "Born in 1920 in Cambridge, (Ronald Searle) became a regular contributor to the Cambridge Daily News in 1935, financed his own night-school studies in drawing and won an art-school scholarship. The war shattered the university-town idyll. In 1942 Searle was captured by the Japanese at Singapore and later put to work on the terrible 'Death Railway' from Siam to Burma. His remarkable eye-witness drawings, achieved with very scant materials, constitute a uniquely important documentary record of the horrors of those times. The post-war years found him in London. As creator of St Trinian's and delineator of Nigel Molesworth, he was a feted London celebrity in the Fifties. His tremendous appetite for work did not, however, save him from involvement in some peculiar situations. Searle's participation in the 1956 Suez Affair, detailed here for the first time, is one of the book's many surprises. In 1961, (he) abandoned the life he had built, moved to France and started again. Living with his second wife in a remote village in Haute-Provence, he has continued to delight and disturb the world with a stream of images that mocks with the best intentions: to make people laugh, and to entice them, through their laughter, to share his own critical vision of the world. Ronald Searle allowed Russell Davies special access to his archive, and has approved the selection of his work that helps to tell his story." 1" split in cloth at bottom of front hinge, very small bump at top corner of boards. Dust jacket has some very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor browning at top edge.

206 Davis, Kenneth S. DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER: SOLDIER OF DEMOCRACY.
New York Konecky & Konecky 156852059X / 9781568520599 Reprint Very Good+ Very Good+
566 pp, 9 1/2" H. Undated reprint of the 1945 edition, c1999. A volume in the "Leaders of Our Time" series. "On June 6, 1944, a decisive day in the history of the Western World, the radio had been blaring reports of the progress of American troops on the Normandy beachhead since long before dawn. The man whose portrait is examined in this book had reached the supreme moment of his career. This work is a first hand account of Dwight D. Eisenhower from his early years in Texas through his military service in World War II. It documents his training at West Point, his tour of duty in WWI and then his meteoric rise as war leader and stateman in World War II. Extensive interviews that the author conducted with Eisenhower in London in the days leading up to the Normandy invasion shed new light on the strategic thinking that lay behind the momentous plans that were then being formulated. They also provide an intimate look at Eisenhower the man and the deeply held sense of values that would see him through the war and then later inform his tenure as president of the United States." Minor browning at top edge of spine, very light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very small dent on front hinge.

541 pp, 8 1/2" H. "The city of Newford could be any contemporary North American city - except that magic lurks in its music, in its art, in the shadows of its grittiest streets, where mythic beings walk disguised. And its people are like you and me, each looking for a bit of magic to shape their lives and transform their fate. Now, in this latest volue, we meet a bluesman hiding from the Devil; a Buffalo Man at the edge of death; a murderous ghost looking for revenge; a wolf man on his first blind date; and many more. We're reunited with Jilly, Geordie, Sophie, the Crow Girls, and other characters whose lives have become part of the great Newford myth. And de Lint takes us beyond Newford's streets to the pastoral hills north of the city, where magic and music have a flavour different but powerful still." London Windrow & Greene 1992 Very Good
66 pp, 10 1/8" H. Profusely illustrated with colour photographs. "In this second instalment of his photo-essay on the 'while kepis', author Yves Debay gives an exhaustive coverage of all Legion units, based in France and overseas, and describes their missions and equipment in detail. Legionnaires from other elite services are not neglected, and this second volume also delves into the activities of 2e REP paratroopers, specialists in swift intervention in Africa; 1er REC cavalrymen, the 'mailed fist' of the Rapid Action Force; and 6e REG sappers, the unsung heroes who, even in peacetime, tirelessly carry out their obscure but vital missions." FIGHTER: THE TRUE STORY OF THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN., Deighton, Len. Introduction by A.J.P. Taylor.
212 Deighton, Len. Introduction by A.J.P. Taylor. FIGHTER: THE TRUE STORY OF THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN.
Edison, NJ Castle 2000 0785812083 / 9780785812081 Reprint. Very Good+ Very Good+
261 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps/battle plans, cartoons, drawings. "Drawing on the mastery of technical detail he displayed so brilliantly in 'Bomber' (the story of an RAF bombing raid), (Deighton) gives us an altogether factual and comprehensive picture of the men, the machines, the strategies (and the blunders), and the events on both sides. He shows us the British squandering precious fighter planes in a futile effort to halt the German blitzkrieg in France, and the Germans refusing to believe in the effectiveness of British radar. He compares the fire power, combat tactics, and ground control, analyzing the performance of both the planes (the Messerschmitt broke up in mid-air more often than the Spitfire) and the pilots (men such as the fabled Douglas Bader, who flew better with two artificial legs than other men with two real ones; or 'Onkel Theo' Osterkamp, a WWI German ace who became an ace in WWII as well, until he was finally ordered off combat flying at the age of forty-eight). We see the British General Staff divided against itself (after the Battle, the man most responsible for the British victory - Sir Hugh Dowding, Commander in Chief, Fighter Command - was dismissed); the German High Command, unsure of its objectives; exaggerated British claims (and an almost fatal shortage of pilots); and German technical superiority that was continually undercut by Nazi incompetence." Small Christmas gift inscription on half-title page, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny stain on fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, minor rubbing.

Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Western Producer Prairie Books 1982 0888330901 / 9780888330901 Very Good Very Good-
177 pp, 11 1/4" H. "Saskatoon began as a vision of the Temperance Colonization Society. Its members formulated a scheme for a colony in the West where a way of life free from the evils of alcohol might be fostered. Early in the spring of 1882, an advance party travelled by rail and wagon to examine their grant of land and to choose the administrative site for the settlement. By the beginning of the twentieth century, the temperance ideals had become secondary to boosterism. By 1905 discussions were underway to amalgamate the original Nutana settlement with 'Saskatoon' and Riversdale on the west side of the river. Their combined population of 4,500 allowed Saskatoon a charter under city status in 1906. By 1908 the city was served by three railway companies and the 'Hub City' station was one of the busiest in the West. (This book) brings the story of the city to life through nearly 300 photographs. It registers changes through two world wars, during the periods of prosperity and recession, into the optimism of the fifties and sixties and the more speculative expansion of the seventies." Christmas gift inscription in ink on front free endpaper, book is lightly cocked, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor glue residue at top edge of rear endpapers. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear - mainly at top/bottom of spine ans flap-folds, light rubbing including faint scratches, 2" edge tear with old tape on inside, two tiny edge tears.

220 Dezarrois, Andre, editor. Translated from the French by Philip John Stead. (Rene Mouchotte.) THE MOUCHOTTE DIARIES, 1940-1943.
London Staples Press 1956 First British Edition Very Good - Fair
221 pp, 8 3/4" H. Frontispiece. "This is the famous Rene who was transformed by three years of war from an unknown pilot of the Reserve into one of the great leaders of Free France in the air, Pierre Clostermann's hero and commanding officer. In 1940 Rene made his daring escape from Oran in an unserviceable plane seized from under the very noses of the authorities. This was a flight not away from danger, but into the thick of the Battle of Britain. He fought with the R.A.F. in Hurricanes and Spitfires, attacking enemy shipping, sweeping over France, giving air-cover to the Dieppe landing, duelling with the Luftwaffe. His exceptional courage and integrity, his powers of leadership and skill as an aerial tactician quickly won the admiration of his superiors. Rene's airborne career culminated at Biggin Hill where he commanded the fighter wing and it was he who shot down the 1,000th German plane recorded by the fighter group there shortly before his death. In the end, his greatest wish was granted, for he had written in his diary: 'If I am not to survive the war, let me at least have the satisfaction of falling to the enemy's fire'.
