LONG KNIVES AND SHORT MEMORIES: THE SPANDAU PRISON STORY., Fishman, Jack.
203 Fishman, Jack. LONG KNIVES AND SHORT MEMORIES: THE SPANDAU PRISON STORY.
New York Richardson & Steirman 1987 09319334200 First American Edition Near Fine Very Good
474 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs. "In 1945 seven men, once among the most powerful on earth, were locked away in a vast prison built to hold more than 600 inmates, surrounded by every conceivable escape-proof precaution. Tried and convicted for attempting to enslave the world, they were the last of what Winston Churchill had called 'the Hitler gang'. Their sentences, meted out by the court at Nuremberg, represented a gigantic step forward in the recognition of international justice. They stood condemned for their part in a campaign of organized cruelty such as history had never seen before. (This book) is the outcome of years of dedicated research. It examines the seven men themselves - their private lives, their motivation, their machinations inside Spandau, their relationships with each other and their attitudes to their crimes. Built up from conversations with their families, lawyers, friends and enemies, and, in some cases, the men themselves, from visits to Berlin made with their wives, from letters written in prison, both authorized and smuggled, and from authentic conversations between the prisoners, this aspect of the book is in itself a gripping study of human corruption. Equally extraordinary are the book's revelations about the hitherto secret diplomatic and political infighting that went on between the four Powers over the welfare and fate of the seven prisoners. The events and intrigues surrounding the jail are as spellbinding as those that occurred inside." Very minor foxing on top of text block. Dust jacket has light rubbing, tiny foxing marks at top inside edge, light browning at top of flaps, one 1" tear at bottom of rear flap-fold - archivally taped.

208 Ford, Ken. Illustrated by Howard Gerrard. General editor David G. Chandler. ST NAZAIRE 1942: THE GREAT COMMANDO RAID. OSPREY CAMPAIGN SERIES 92.
(Osprey, Oxford, 2001), Ist edition.
96 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4" H), soft cover. Profusely illustrated in b&w and color with photos, maps, battle plans, drawings. "The raid on the port of St Naziare in March 1942 by a sea-borne task force from British Combined Operations, remains one of the most daring actions of the Second World War. The port lies at the mouth of the River Loire and in 1942, as well as a U-boat base, contained the massive 'Normandie' dock, the only facility on the Atlantic coast large enough to accommodate the German battleship 'Tirpitz'. This book tells the story of the raid on St Nazaire that denied the use of the dock to the 'Tirpitz', the sister ship of the 'Bismarck', and constituted a crucial victory in the Battle of the Atlantic." As the lads come home, the beaches are cleared of barbed wire and mines. Bomb sites become playgrounds, and blitzed gardens the occasion for a filched apple or potato. Foreman recalls the ongoing rationing, prefab houses, and baths in tin tubs; movies with Roy Rogers, Hopalong Cassidy, and Robin Hood with an American accent; newspaper routes and soccer madness; school days and his discovery of the opposite sex. He also describes his development as an artist; the magical revelation of 'Treasure Island', first read aloud by a teacher; postwar comic books; his early drawing lessons; and the art school where his hobby started to become a vocation. Foreman's evocative color illustrations depict the detail of daily life and include period documents. (This book) recreates an enchanting world - a time of innocence, wonder, and the simple pleasures, illuminated by the artist's vivid memory. Here is a marvelous achievement and an enduring memoir for all ages."

256 pp, large 8vo, (9 3/8" H). B&w maps, photographs. "History's overriding view of the Dieppe raid in 1942 is that of a catastrophic disaster, with thousands of Canadian and British troops killed or captured. Often overlooked is No 4 Commando's successful supporting element of the raid to disable the heavy German guns that threatened the supporting ships at sea. No 4 Commando's training and preparation for their part in the raid was an excellent example of operational planning, its leadership was superb and its luck held. Quite apart from this first use of Commando's, this raid was also the first instance in which US troops fired shots at their European enemy in WWII. Will Fowler has been able to interview surviving members of No 4 Commando, and with extensive research of official records has pieced together a terrific blow by blow account of one of the most daring early Commando raids of the Second World War." "Joining the RAF at the beginning of the war, (Neville Duke) found himself, aged 19, as a young fighter pilot with the crack 92 Squadron at RAF Biggin Hill, in 1941. That spring and summer he survived the air battles over Northern France with the Biggin Hill Wing, often flying as wingman to the legendary 'Sailor' Malan - Fighter Command's top-scoring pilot at that time. In those months he learnt the fighter pilot's trade, lessons that were to prove invaluable when, in November, he was posted to a very different war in the Western Desert. Flying the famous 'Shark-Mouthed' P40B Tomahawk fighters with 112 Sqn, he quickly established himself as one of the most successful pilots in North Africa, winning the DFC and bar. By 1943 he was flight commander with his old 92 Squadron which had also become part of the Desert Air Force. Again flying Spitfires, he had scored twenty-one by the end of the Tunisian Campaign, was a warded the DSO, then given command of 145 Spitfire Squadron in Italy. Leading this unit in the summer of 1944 he brought his score to twenty-eight, returning home in late 1944 as the highest scoring pilot in the Mediterranean Theatre..." 179 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, Spitfire profiles. "Robert 'Buck' McNair came from Nova Scotia, the second of three sons born of a mix of Scottish and German parents. As a young man he became interested in flight, and was lucky enough to be able to fly floatplanes off the Canadian lakes. When war came, he went through flight training in Canada, sailed to England, and in the summer of 1941 found himself in the newly formed 411 Squadron RCAF. Eventually this unit began flying sweeps over Northern France and he saw his first combat actions during that autumn. An aggressive fighter pilot, he was chosen by his Canadian CO to accompany him to the besieged island of Malta in the spring of 1942, to coincide with the arrival on that island of the first Spitfires." McNair went on to win three DFCs and a DSO among other awards and although he was twice wounded, his score of victories reached 16, "with others probably destroyed and damaged. This is a remarkable story of courage and heroism by one of the Second World War's top-scoring fighter pilots who inspired his men and fellow pilots in actions above the skies of France and Malta, and who, despite being almost blind in one eye, continued to lead and spur his men onto greater actions." One very tiny corner bump to front board. Dust jacket has very minor edge wear/wrinkling, minor rubbing.

179 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H).
