THE STORY OF THE ROYAL TOURNAMENT., Binns, P.L., Lieutenant-Colonel.
201 Binns, P.L., Lieutenant-Colonel. THE STORY OF THE ROYAL TOURNAMENT.
Gale & Polden, Aldershot, 1952, Ist edition.
156 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Results of 1952 Royal Tournament laid-in. B&w photos, reproductions. "Fifty-three Tournaments have passed since the first 'Grand Assault-at-Arms' at Islington for the benefit of the volunteers of London and any Regular troops stationed 'within convenient range'. In 1883 the declared object was simply the promotion of skill-at-arms, but gradually the charitable side asserted itself until both aspects were recognized as being of equal importance. Both objects have been successfully achieved. This story tells of those early days when the sword, lance and bayonet were the main weapons of the Queen's soldiers, and describes the means by which the Tournament encouraged their skilful use. It traces the gradual decline of these weapons from the appearance of the early Maxim and Gatling guns which were diplayed in mimic warfare in the presence of enthusiastic audiences at Islington. In addition to showing development in arms and warfare, the Tournament has year by year demonstrated the progress made in the art of training the Service man in his profession..." Small surface scuff on half-title page near gutter, light wrinkle at top/bottom of spine, one tiny corner bump, very small dent to top edge of both boards, minor edge wear. Dust jacket is price clipped, has small chips and tears with creases, light edge wear/wrinkling, light to moderate rubbing/soiling on rear panel. VG -/G-

"(B)rings together for the first time the photographs and journal of Benjamin Baltzly from his trip through British Columbia in 1871. Baltzly was a talented photographer working in the Montreal studio of William Notman. His trip to British Columbia was made with a party sent out by the Geological Survey of Canada to examine the geology along one of the proposed routes for the Canadian Pacific Railway - the North Thompson River through the Yellowhead Pass. Although a few of Baltzly's photographs have appeared in print, they have never been examined as a body. His journal, which appeared in 'The Gazette' of Montreal in 1872, is one of the very few written records left by Canadian photographers of the (19th) century. The photographs are probably the earliest taken of the rugged British Columbia interior." Two very small ink smudges on title page, tiny ink mark at bottom edge of rear pastedown. SUPERMARINE ATTACKER, SWIFT AND SCIMITAR. POSTWAR MILITARY AIRCRAFT: 7., Birtles, Philip.
205 Birtles, Philip. SUPERMARINE ATTACKER, SWIFT AND SCIMITAR. POSTWAR MILITARY AIRCRAFT: 7.
Ian Allan, Shepperton, Surrey, 1992, first edition.
112 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0711020345 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, drawings/diagrams. "The name Supermarine is universally associated with the Spitfire, an aircraft which helped to defeat the Luft waffe during the Battle of Britain; the company's fundamental role in the development of Britain's military jet aircraft is less well known. Although now overshadowed by the success of the Hawker Hunter and of the BAC Lightning, the Supermari n e A t t acker, Swift and Scimitar were among the most influential of Britain's post-war military aircraft. The Attacker, first flown in 1946, was the first jet fighter to be standardised on for squadron service with the Fleet Air Arm. The Attac ke r w as f ol lowed by the Swift. The first of this type of jet interceptor flew in 1951 and was introduced to squadron service in February 1954; it thus gained the distinction of being the first swept-wing jet fighter to enter service with the R oya l Ai r F orc e, beating the Hawker Hunter by several months. The teething problems apparent with the Swift, however, ensured that it was the Hunter that was to go on to great success. Further success was to come to the Supermarine company with the S cim itar . A gai n destined for the Fleet Air Arm, the Scimitar holds the distinction of being the first swept-wing single-seat jet fighter in service with the FAA as well as being the first FAA aircraft to be equipped to carry atomic weapo ns. (Th e au thor) narr ates the often dramatic history of these influential, but now unfairly ignored, aircraft. Forty years after the event the book will enable the aviation historian to appreciate better the importance of Supermarine's role in the dev elopm ent of Brita in's military jet aircraft." THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS SOCIAL HISTORY OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR., Bishop, James. Foreword by Lord Blake.
213 Bishop, James. Foreword by Lord Blake. THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS SOCIAL HISTORY OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR.
London Angus & Robertson 1982 0207148260 / 9780207148262 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
144 pp, 10 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w reproductions of photographs, drawings, advertisements. "The First World War, which claimed the lives of so many men on the battlefields of the Western Front, also profoundly affected the character and everyday life of the nation at home. It was the first 'total war' and the whole country contributed to the war effort. The unrelenting demands of the trenches eventually forced the Government to introduce conscription while, for those left behind, the state intervened more and more in the lives of its citizens. Hardships increased: food and fuel were in very short supply and rationing had to be imposed in 1916. The civilian population was also directly involved in the hostilities with the bombing raids of zeppelins and aeroplanes. But the war did bring some changes for the better. The salaried classes grew, working conditions improved and the war also helped liberate women who replaced men in factories and public services, and joined the armed forces. When the armistice finally came, in November 1918, Lloyd George promised 'a fit country for heroes to live in' - though the reality proved to be less Utopian. The Illustrated London News continued to publish throughout the First World War and was supplemented by The Illustrated War News. These magazines provided a vivid pictorial chronicle of contemporary events and enable us, today, to enter into the spirit of a bygone era. (The author) has written a fascinating and fully-documented account of these momentous years, complemented by over 200 pictures from the original issues." Light edge wear to boards. Dust jacket has one tiny edge tear, light foxing at top & bottom inside edges, very light edge wrinkling, a few tiny dents and faint line indentations on front panel.

ISBN 0434074101 "Nearly twenty years after the present wave of conflict began in Northern Ireland, the Provisional IRA is still an active destabilising force within the United Kingdom. Yet despite the huge loss of life and the consequent political distortions and upheavals it has created, remarkably little is known about it. This authoritiative new book, the first full-length study to be undertaken since the Troubles began i n 1 9 6 9 , examines the IRA in depth, analysing its leaders, its objectives and structure. Aided by numerous, unusually frank interviews with the men who run the organisation and key figures in the Security Forces, the authors trace the IRA's pr og r es si on f ro m disarray in the early 1960s to powerful political force in the late 1980s. They explore the movement's inner workings, explaining the commitment and life of its participants and shedding new light on some of the recent lan dma rks i n t he oft en blo od y history of Republicanism; internment, the hunger strikes, the mainland bombing campaign, the development of the IRA's dual strategy of 'armalite and ballotbox'....a uniquely informative and thought-provoking book, o ne w hich wi ll i tse lf p rov e a lan dmark in the study of Irish history." As Napoleon exclaimed, 'Qu'ils sont terribles, ces chevaux gris', and he spoke from the heart: he was referring to t h e R o y a l Scots Greys. As it was at Waterloo, so it was at Balaclava where the Greys, as part of the Heavy Brigade, went through the Russians like a knife through butter; in South Africa, where they scattered the Boers like grass in the path of a sc yt he . T h e grey horses gave way to tanks in 1941 but the spirit of Sergeant Ewart lived on in the Second World War, and in no 'Grey' more so than Lt.-Col. Geoffrey Keyes, posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his daring raid on R omm el' s He adq uar te rs in North Africa. The story of the Royal Scots Greys - whether they are charging French, Russians or Germans as cavalry, or fighting in North Africa, Italy or North-West Europe in tanks - will stir the blood of every man who has e ver sold iere d a nd man y civilians besides."
