In-depth reviews of the major examples over 75 years include the first German raids on Britain and the development of anti-aircraft arti llery; the appearance of German Heinkel and Dornier bombers in the 1930s and the design of the Hurricane and Spitfire to defeat this threat; and the defence against Soviet Cold War bombers in the form of the Hunter and Bloodhound. The result is a p rogressive history that concludes with the state of current defences and thoughts for the future: how will emerging challenges to the UK and NATO be met and countered? Illustrated with a wide range of photographs of the weapons systems deploy e d t hr ough three quarters of a century, this is an usual and perceptive new assessment, with particular value in this anniversary year for the RAF." 224 pp, 9 1/4" H. "In this anecdotal recounting of his boyhood years, his experiences in medical school, where he met his wife Janet, also a doctor, and his service in the armed forces during World War II and after, Morris Gibson shows what life is like for a doctor at large. He is a man devoted to healing, whether in England, or in a foothills town in Alberta, a western province of Canada. With his family, he makes his way with skill and intuition, curing when he can, listening and learning when he cannot. He recalls simple people in complex situations, the amazing effects of medical break-throughs, tragedy and triumph. And all is told in his original voice, that of a man who learns not only by seeing his patients as individuals as unique as their medical problems, but by applying his skill as a doctor to a changing world." THE HISTORY OF THE SUFFOLK REGIMENT 1946-1959., Godfrey, F.A., Major.
204 Godfrey, F.A., Major. THE HISTORY OF THE SUFFOLK REGIMENT 1946-1959.
Leo Cooper, London, (1988), Ist edition.
276 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photos, maps. "...covers the Regiment in action in Palestine, India, Malaya, Trieste and Cyprus, as well as when soldiering in Egypt, Greece, BAOR and at home. A complete chapter is devoted to the activities of the Suffolk and Cambridgeshire Territorial battalions...Each chapter describes a tour of duty of one battalion in a particular posting and is divided into two parts: the first paints a general picture of the role of the battalion showing why it was there and what it was like to be there with some mention of events of note. The second part of the chapter contains a detailed chonological account of the experiences of the battalion...In Malaya the Regiment won for itself between 1949 and 1953 a reputation unequalled throughout the whole 12-year Emergency there by any other British battalion. While the chapter devoted to Malaya provides the core of the book the other chapters reveal a continous thread of devotion to duty and the author is not exaggerating when he speaks in his preface of 'a quiet, grim determination in the face of extremely hostile conditions' to do a worthwhile job as being characteristic of the Suffolk Regiment until the very end." Phoenix House, London, 1962, revised edition.
264 pp, 8vo (8 9/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Over 150 b&w illustrations (drawings and photographs) showing buildings, floor plans, architectural details. "....(studies the architecture of London and) beyond to Kent, Surrey, Hertfordshire, a nd elsewhere up to a limit of forty miles to introduce and describe the fine houses, churches, abbeys, palaces, and other buildings deserving of public interest in some of the home counties. It could justly be claimed that no major buildi n g o f a r c h itectural merit from Norman to our own time is overlooked, and some of the greater glories of London's stone are the subject of concise yet comprehensive essays, Westminster Abbey, for example, and the peculiarly beautiful Eltham P al ac e , so su rp ri si ngly situated in what is now one of London's populous suburbs. But Mr Godfrey is far from a mere guide. His book brims with profound knowledge and an engaging enthusiasm. He understands that most of his readers are not v ers ed in t he t erm s a nd ref erences of architecture, and these are introduced one by one, and the wonders and excitements of the art of building are revealed in their various beauty. Architectural features and comparative styles, together with pla ns and de tai le d dr awin gs, are included in the 59 text figures, and there are 64 pages of plates containing 104 photographs and rare prints of buildings as they appeared in the past...." 376 pp, 8 5/8" H, hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "....Peter is recognized by students of Russian history as the Tsar who started that country on her leftward course - in Russia his statues still remain. Autocrat and constructive re volutionary, his like did not recur among the later Romanoffs, and it is to Peter that Stalin has been said to turn for a model on which to shape the prerogatives of absolutism. But Stephen Graham does not theorize or make political generali z a t i o n s in this biography. With precision and detachment, he tells us what the Tsar did, and how he behaved from day to day, leaving us to draw our own conclusions as to the motives that inspired this intriguing monarch. M. Evans, New York, 1992, reprint.

"(S)hows how the rise and decline of imperial Rome was intimately connected with the balance of political and military power. The role of the army in the Roman em pire was a formidable one: the emperor depended on the soldiers for his continued existence, as did the empire itself. But an army powerful enought to defend the frontiers and keep the Roman peace also had the power to destroy the emperor. A g a i n s t this ever-present danger the emperors took unceasing precautions, one of their principal methods being to surround themselves with bodyguards, the Praetorian Guard. But what began as a protective measure had wider repercussions, for th e Gu ar d ca me to play an even greater part in the internal politics of the empire...The story of 'The Army of the Caesars' provides a model of how civil strife, focused around the holders of military power inevitably occurs, endangering the pr eca ri ous eq ui lib riu m of large areas of the world." PALACE EXTRAORDINARY: THE STORY OF ST JAMES'S., Graves, Charles.
215 Graves, Charles. PALACE EXTRAORDINARY: THE STORY OF ST JAMES'S.
Cassell, London, 1963, first edition.
245 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "St James's Palace is one of London's most famous landmarks, its Tudor clock-tower familiar to residents and visitors in its dramatic position at the far end of St James's Street. T here is, however, no other building in London of comparable age about which so little is known, since the public is rarely allowed beyond the well-known facade. Ironically enough, the site on which Henry VIII had the palace built for Anne B o l e y n w a s once occupied by a nunnery, but the odour of sanctity seems soon to have dispersed and its history revolves around ladies of a lighter kind. Here lived Prince Henry, the brilliant elder son of James I who, had he survived to inh e ri t th e th ro n e, w ould probably have altered completely the course of history. But on his death his brother Charles took the fatal path which led finally to imprisonment in the Guard Room at St James's, from where he walked across the park to th e sca ff old . In 16 97 the palace was officially designated the Court of St James's and from then until the accession of Victoria was the sovereign's official residence. Here died George III, the record of whose last mad years makes poigna nt read in g in th is p os t-F reud ian age. But was it on him alone that the curse of madness lay? What was behind the ghastly murder of Sellis, the Duke of Cumberland's servant, found dead in bed with his head nearly severed from his body? Th e r iddle of his deat h has ne ver been solv ed but it seems likely that the royal Duke was himself implicated. Although the main flood of history has been diverted to other channels and the palace now lives mostly in the past, there are yet lin ks w ith th e tw entie th ce ntury: if the pala ce gh ost - for there is, of course, a ghost - looks over the shoulder of an official in the Lord Chamberlain's office when plays are being scrutinized before performance, the bawdy situations in t hem w ill har dly c ause h er to raise a n eye brow. Life at St James's was always like that." Samll store label on front pastedown, a few tiny foxing marks on top of textblock. These thirteen characters form the basis of the all-new stories of this anthology. And who better to tell their stories than the authors of the Clan Novels? All of the authors of the original series have contributed to this anthology. With the addition of fine stories by two other authors as well, readers may peer even deeper into the shadows of the World of Darkness and find answers to some of the mysteries not resolved in the series itself." Interiors - "Gangrel" has approx. 1" piece missing from bottom of last page, "Setite" has corner crease on pages 39 to 42, otherwise all books are clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exteriors - very minor edge wear, a few tiny light corner creases on some books - "Anthology" has crease at top corner of rear cover that migrates into the last few pages.
