202 Halberstadt, Hans. MARINE MUSCLE: HORNET AND HARRIER. WINGS NO.5.
London Windrow & Greene 1993 1872004474 / 9781872004471 First Edition Soft Cover Near Fine
96 pp, 10 3/16" H. Profusely illustrated with colour photographs. "The McDonnell Douglas/Northrop F/A-18 Hornet and McDonnell Douglas AV-8B Harrier II provide the 'muscle' of the US Marine Corps' air element. Dedicated to just one mission - supporting the Marine rifleman down there in the dirt, at whatever cost - they form a versatile, hard-hitting, highly motivated element of the Corps' overall ability to project American power overseas. Neither is particularly fast: but each is perfectly suited to its special roles. The Hornet, famous for its agility and accurate delivery of a wide range of ordnance, is the perfect fighter/bomber combination. The remarkable V/STOL Harrier can get airborne within minutes from just about any hard surface in the newly captured beachhead, to put 'a world of hurt' on the enemy's front line. Between them they can clear the skies over the beachhead of enemy aircraft; respond instantly to the call for close air support at the forward edge of battle; and carry out interdiction bombing along the enemy's rear lines. (This book) presents a fascinating close-up look at both these battle-proven aircraft and their missions." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - clean and bright.

176 pp, 12 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs, drawings, reproductions. "(B)egins with the earliest pieces of Western artillery that were little more than iron tubes firing stone shot. Over the next few centuries the guns became more mobile and more powerful, influencing the course of the battles in which they were involved. Muzzle loaders reached their apogee in the Napoleonic wars and the American Civil War during the nineteenth century. By the outbreak of World War I in 1914, breech-loaded guns were the standard, and weapons of such large calibres were being constructed that they needed to be mounted on rail wagons to give them any form of mobility. Artillery played a significant role in shaping how that conflict was fought, and it was to play an equally signifi-cant role in World War II. Only now, in the twenty-first century, is the supremacy of artillery on the battlefield being challenged by air-dropped precision-guided weapons, but the arm is fighting back with sophisticated new munitions becoming available which will ensure that artillery has a part to play on the modern battlefield for the forseeable future." Chapter headings: Sighting Shots; The American Civil War; Storm of Steel, 1900-1935; Master of the Battlefield, 1936-1945; Cold War Killers; Glossary; Index. Book is fine. Dust jacket minor edge wear/wrinkling, minor rubbing.

CONFEDERATE TIDE RISING: ROBERT E. LEE AND THE MAKING OF SOUTHERN STRATEGY, 1861-1862., Harsh, Joseph L.
209 Harsh, Joseph L. CONFEDERATE TIDE RISING: ROBERT E. LEE AND THE MAKING OF SOUTHERN STRATEGY, 1861-1862.
Kent, Ohio Kent State University Press 1998 0873385802 / 9780873385800 Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
278 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w plates, maps/battle plans. "In this reexamination of Confederate war aims, (the author) anayzes the military policy and grand strategy adopted by Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis in the first two years of the Civil War. Recent critics of Lee have depicted him as a general of tactical brilliance, but one who lacked strategic vision. He has been accused of squandering meager military resources in vain pursuit of decisive victories during his first two years in field command. Critics of Davis claim he went too far in adopting a 'perimeter' policy which attempted to defend every square mile of Southern territory, scattering Confederate resources too thinly. Harsh argues, to the contrary, that Davis and Lee's policies allowed the Confederacy to survive longer than it otherwise could have and were the policies best designed to win Southern independence. The Confederacy needed to retain the resources of the upper South, and wanted to include the border states, so its aims were offensive rather than defensive. For the most part, Davis encouraged his field commanders to undertake aggressive operations, but it was not until Lee took command of the Army of Northern Virginia that Davis found a general with the intelligence and courage to invent and then execute a cogent strategy which gave the South a chance to win the war."

In the books, many people & events we consider fictional are real and vice versa and there are many references to famous literature and authors. 1. The Ivanhoe Gambit - 209 pp, 1984 first printing, ISBN 0441377629 - Sometimes Sergeant Major Lucas Priest wondered why he had enlisted in the U.S. Army Temporal Corps. Fighting in the Time Wars wasn't the easiest way to make a living. But a demented scheme to impersonate the King of England was threatening to change the course of history. Two army teams had already failed to intercept the madman. So Lucas and his men must clock back to the twelfth century to try and prevent an irreversible split in time." 2. The Timekeeper Conspiracy - 215 pp, 1984 second printing, ISBN 0441811361 - "Captain Lucas Priest, a seasoned veteran of the Temporal Corps, was dispatched to seventheenth century France. Someone had to impersonate Blakeney and carry out his task." 4. The Zenda Vendetta - 206 pp, 1985 first printing, ISBN 0441959156 - "In the kingdom of Ruritania, Prince Rudolf is about to be crowned king. Instead, due to the machinations of his half brother, he becomes the 'Prisoner of Zenda'. That was back in the 19th century. But history is about to repeat itself - with a twist. The Timekeepers, the terrorist underground from the 27th century, have traveled backward once again to try to sabotage the course of history." 5. The Nautilus Sanction - 196 pp, 1985 first printing, ISBN 0441565662 - "(T)he Nautilus, a Russian supersub armed with enough nuclear firepower to blow history apart at the seams, has been hijacked from the 27th century. Priest and his commandos clock back to pursue the sub, and come face-to-face with a man whose thirst for revenge is so great he would start the greatest war of all time - everywhere at once! To stop him, the Time Commandos have only the help of the Canadian fisherman, Ned Land, and a middle-aged French writer of voyages extraordinaires named Jules Verne - ." 6. The Khyber Connection - 195 pp, 1986 first printing, ISBN 04414375257 - "The year was 1897. The Khyber Pass echoed with the sounds of war. Soldiers from Britain, India, and Afghanistan were immersed in a bloody conflict. Enter the Time Commandos. Their mission: To foil a plot that has set timelines on a collision course. The Dracula Caper - 212 pp, 1988 first printing, ISBN 0441166164 - "A plague of vampires and werewolves falls on Victoria's England - but there's nothing supernatural about these creatures. They're genetically engineered monsters from the far future, dropped into the past as a devilish tactic in the Time Wars! It's a mystery more baffling than any penned by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - a cosmic riddle to stagger the imagination of the great H.G. Wells. Soon the creators of Sherlock Holmes and 'The Time Machine' join forces with the Time Commandos to combat an ageless evil which strains the very fabric of the universe!". 10. 214 Hayter, Tony, editor. Viscount Barrington. AN EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY SECRETARY OF WAR: THE PAPERS OF WILLIAM, VISCOUNT BARRINGTON. PUBLICATIONS OF THE ARMY RECORDS SOCIETY VOL. 4.
Bodley Head / Army Records Society, London, 1988, first edition.
418 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0370312279 Color portrait frontispiece. "Viscount Barrington served as Secretary at War under George II and George III from 1755 to 1778, with only a few years' interval during which he held other offices of state. The collection of documents presented in this volume is designed to show how the War Office worked during the incumbency of this unusually conscientious and effective minister, and throws a remarkable light on an i m p o r t a n t area of eighteenth-century history and on the way in which public policy and administration were connected. Why, for example, was the War Office organized and managed in the way it was? Why was its incumbent furnished with a bri ef i n re al it y so i m portant and yet technically so restricted in its public responsibility? Was he really (as he often claimed) without power? Or, if he did have power, of what sort was it? How successfully could any one man deal with a ro le whi ch re qui red h im at ti mes to perform as an official in a department, at others as a courtier and confidential secretary to a monarch, and at others as a spokesman in Parliament, as well as composing quarrels within the army, and between the arm y a nd t he p ubli c? Al tho ugh there can be no complete solution to these problems, either for an eighteenth-century Secretary of War or for a twentieth-century historian, this collection, divided up thematically to illustrate the varie d re spons ibil ites borne by t he War Offi ce, provides material for a better understanding of them." "Thanks to the extraordinary photographs and gardening wisdom in this classic book, the elegant intim acy of the English cottage garden is a practical possibility for amateur gardeners in diverse regions of the United States. Margaret Hensel, whose photographs and articles on garden design have appeared in 'Horticulture' and many other magazine s , h as analyzed the aesthetic and horticultural elements of ten representative cottage gardens - eight in England and two in the United States (including Tasha Tudor's at Corgi Cottage in Vermont). Her spectacular photographs render the look and a tm o sp here of these gardens, while her text focuses on easily grown, readily available plants that are adaptable to a wide variety of climatic and soil conditions. In the back of the book may be found specific horticultural information on a wi de var ie ty of cottage garden plants commonly available in the United States, glossaries of Latin and common names, a list of sources for old rose varieties, and a detailed index. The gardens in this beautiful book are not those of the great estat es of E ngl and , manicured by staffs of professional gardeners. They are, instead, labors of love on the part of individual homeowners, many of whom started with bleak, rubble-strewn lots and went on to create the enchanted settings pictured here. 181 pp, 8"H. "Coin-collecting can be a dangerous hobby in the United States. One important collector has just been killed in a car crash. His niece, who inherits, takes her uncle's valuable collection to her lawyer, Donald Roback, and Roback, a collector himself, realises they are fakes. So when were the genuine coins switched, and by whom? And was the car crash genuinely an accident? When he asks that last question, Roback also begins to wonder whether other recent 'accidents' to collectors were quite what they seemed: one drowned, though a good swimmer; two burned to death in their home. Roback has another hobby: detection. And now he begins to investigate. There are one or two very nasty customers among the dealers: in particular, one Alvin Andred, whose place of business is a fortress, guarded not only by armoured doors and electronic eyes but also by vicious thugs with guns. But Roback most ingeniously outsmarts him; and Andred plans a horrifying revenge; and the action builds up to a cataclysmic climax. This is a fast-paced and very tense mystery, which challenges Roback's intelligence and endangers his life. As a bonus we learn a lot about the world of the numismatist. And the author is a judge, who draws upon his own legal experience as inspiration for his novels, and for their detail." Minor wrinkling and sun fading at top edge of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, a few very small discolored areas on rear flap.
