201 MacInnis, Craig, editor. (Trent Frayne, June Callwood, Hugh MacLennan, Sidney Katz, Andy O'Brien, Dink Carroll, Milt Dunnell, Jack Todd.) REMEMBERING THE ROCKET: A CELEBRATION.
Toronto Stoddart 1998 0773731288 / 9780773731288 First Edition Very Good - Very Good-
128 pp, 7 3/4" H. B&w and colour photographs. "He has been called the 'greatest goal scorer in professional hockey history,' not least for his astonishing feat of notching 50 goals in 50 games. Yet that alone hardly explains his legend. Maurice Richard not only ushered in hockey's modern era with his prolific scoring touch and fiery play, he also came to symbolize the hopes and fears of an entire culture. Quebec in the 1940s and '50s wanted a hero and they found one in Richard - a fierce competitor, a skilful artist and a proud warrior, whose famous temper triggered one of the darkest events in Canadian sporting history - the Montreal riot of 1955. This look back at the greatest player to ever don the red, white and blue includes some of the finest sportswriters of the era, documenting Richard the hero and Richard the villain, Richard the doting family man and Richard the aging hockey legend. Passionate about everything in life, Richard raised the stakes for all of us who understand that hockey has always been more than just a game." Large gift insciption on free front endpaper; previous owner's name, place and date on half-title page; 5" line indentation on rear board. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, 5" line indentatiom on rear panel, two tiny light stains on inside surface.

A CHECKLIST OF TORONTO CABINET AND CHAIR MAKERS, 1800-1865., Mackinnon, Joan.
204 Mackinnon, Joan. A CHECKLIST OF TORONTO CABINET AND CHAIR MAKERS, 1800-1865.
Nationa Museums of Canada, Ottawa, 1975.
199 pp, small 4to (10 15/16" H), soft cover. National Museum of Man Mercury Series, History Division Paper No. 11. B&w illustrations. "This check-list, containing approximately 500 names, attempts to include not only all the autonomous cabinet and chairmakers who began their operations in Toronto before 1865, but also all those who were employed by the larger manufacturers and who may have done nothing more than turn out component parts. (It) gives only the barest details for most of the entries: name, occupation (the way in which the man was identified at the time), working dates to 1890, and dates and places of residence and/or business to 1865. Additional information, including biographical data, types of furniture made, number and names of employees, outside activities, etc., is included where available. The working dates given are the earliest and latest dates for which there is actual proof that the cabinetmaker or chairmaker was working in Toronto. This is so even in cases where there may be reason to believe that the craftsman was active prior to or after the dates noted. Where a cabinetmaker is known to have changed his profession, his later occupation is mentioned, but the final date is always for work as a cabinet or chairmaker. In most instances birth dates are correct only to within a year, as they usually had to be calculated by subtracting the man's stated age from the year of the census or tax assessment roll in which it was given." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very light foxing to top of textblock, very light rubbing/soiling, light soiling to spine, very minor edge wear. VG

205 Macleish, William H. OIL AND WATER: THE STRUGGLE FOR GEORGES BANK.
Boston Atlantic Monthly Press 1985 0871130076 / 9780871130075 First Edition Very Good Very Good-
304 pp, 8 1/2" H. "Georges Bank, 20,000 square miles of turbulent shoal water off Nantucket, is one of the richest fishing grounds in the world, its depths populated by cod, haddock, flatfish, and scallops. Until recently it was a gathering place for immense fishing trawlers of all nations. Then the Bank also became a bone of contention for explorers in oil, pitting the great multinational companies against one another, to say nothing of federal and state governments, jostling for their share of offshore oil revenues. Georges has long been the subject of dispute between the United States and Canada, and in the fall of 1984 the International Court of Justice in the Hague awarded a large portion of the Bank to Canada. Oil-lease sales were scheduled - and cancelled. Fishermen protested to their political representatives, who protested to their governments. Over the storm-lashed and fecund waters of Georges Bank, William MacLeish has travelled many times - by trawler, by helicopter, by scientific research vessel, by airplane, and by scallop boat. His pages bring us the scientists, the fishing people, politicians, lawyers, and oilmen connected with Georges Bank." Book is slightly cocked, has minor soiling on top of text block, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine - bump at top of front hinge. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, a few small light scuff marks, light soiling/rubbing on rear panel.

210 Mahovlich, Ted. (Frank Mahovlich) Signed and Inscribed. Foreword by Red Fisher. THE BIG M: THE FRANK MAHOVLICH STORY.
Toronto HarperCollins 1999 0002000105 / 9780002000109 First Edition Very Good Very Good Inscribed by Subject & Signed by Author.
244 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w and colour photographs. Inscribed on half title page: "To P___ B___ Merry Xmas Frank Mahovlich 27" and signed "Ted Mahovlich". The black marker used in the signing/inscription has bled through the page somewhat. "Hockey fans who saw Frank Mahovlich play will never forget the combination of power and grace that defined the on-ice presence of a hockey superstar. Growing up in Schumacher, Ontario, Frank graduated from the St. Michael's Majors to the Toronto Maple Leafs at age nineteen. In his first year in the National Hockey League, 1957-58, he beat out Chicago sensation Bobby Hull for the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year. And so began a career that spanned twenty-one years in the NHL and World Hockey Association. Rich with anecdotes, 'The Big M' captures the spirit and times of a Hall of Famer career: four Stanley Cups with the great Leafs teams of the '60s'; his bitter struggle with Punch Imlach; the infamous million-dollar deal with the Chicago Blackhawks; the Leafs-Red Wings trade that saw Frank hook up with Alex Delvecchio and Gordie Howe to form the Production Line II; the end of the six-team era; glory years in Montreal and two more Stanley Cups; the 1972 Canada/Russia series; his move to the WHA's Toronto Toros and the wild stories from a league of a different kind; the Senate appointment and personal reflections." Previous owner's place, Christmas notation, date and signature on free front endpaper; light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. 98 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated in color. "Since his professinal debut nearly 20 years ago, artist Don Maitz has been giving form to the fantastic in a way that has won him widespread recognition by both his professional peers and an enthusiastic public. Following up on the success of 'First Maitz', this volume is a lavishly produced collection of some of Maitz's most popular works, as well as some never-before-published paintings. Exhibiting a fanatical attention to detail, the paintings apply surrealist technique to surreal situations. Maitz likes to mix modern imagery with medieval icons and his pictures frequently display a keen sense of wit. (He) has designed more than 250 book covers for some of today's leading authors of cutting-edge science fiction, including Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Piers Anthony, Stephen King, Raymond E. Feist, C.J. Cherryh, Janny Wurts and Gene Wolfe. His visceral and adventurous visions have also attracted commercial clients for national advertising: Eastman Kodak, NBC, and Captain Morgan Spiced Rum. (He) has received the Silver Medallion from the American Society of Illustrators, the Hugo Award and the Howard Award for Best Artist at the Sixth World Fantasy Convention." Soft crease at top corner of first few pages, slight waviness to edges of textblock. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

167 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers, b&w plates. "This book sketches the historical experiences, the cultural and environmental influences which have made national characteristics and form the basis of policies in home and foreign affairs. Fierce patriotism and stubborn loyalties to friends and traditions are perhaps to be expected in a people who have discovered how to live well in their inordinately long country extending far beyond the Arctic Circle a n d s l a s h ed into a crazy pattern by glaciers, mountains and fjords. Democratic institutions, the huge merchant fleet, the midnight sun, the cod fisheries of Lofoten, Hanseatic Bergen, the growing pains of the capital of Oslo, the creation o f a ne w l an gu ag e by Parliamentary decree and especially the long associations with the English across the Northern Sea, form part of the picture. A fascinating folk and a very beautiful country - the two cannot be separated...." "In 1924, Charles Adams of Brookline, Massachusetts, journeyed to Montreal to see the Stanley Cup finals and fell in love with the game. When two new NHL franchises became available that same year, Adams snapped one up for $15,000 and set up shop in Boston. The new team was dubbed the Boston Bruins. The Bruins have been one of the most intimidating and most successful NHL teams ever since. They won their first Stanley Cup in 1928, four short years after their initial game, and have since won another four Cups. Dozens of Hall of Famers and fan favorites have donned the brown, black, and gold, legends like Eddie Shore, Fern Flaman, Dit Clapper, Milt Schmidt, Phil Esposito, Brad Park, Derek Sanderson, Ray Bourque, and the incomparable Bobby Orr. From the lunch bucket teams of the World War I era to Don Cherry's Big Bad Bruins of the 1970s, to the recent Bruin resurgence under Pat Burns and his stable of young stars, the Bruins have endured as one of the more popular of the Original Six teams, and one of the most successful hockey franchises of all time." THE RUIN OF J. ROBERT OPPENHEIMER AND THE BIRTH OF THE MODERN ARMS RACE., McMillan, Priscilla J.
219 McMillan, Priscilla J. THE RUIN OF J. ROBERT OPPENHEIMER AND THE BIRTH OF THE MODERN ARMS RACE.
New York Viking 2005 0670034223 / 9780670034222 First Edition Near Fine Near Fine
373 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs. "On April 12, 1954, the nation was astonished to learn that scientist J. Robert Oppeheimer faced charges of violating national security. The brilliant leader of the Manhattan Project had been cast into disgrace overnight. Was the arrogant genius, the charismatic head of the team that had developed the atomic bomb and ended World War II, really a traitor? In this riveting narrative, (the author) draws on newly declassified documents, unpublished manuscripts, private correspondence, and decades of unique interviews with the major characters in the story to present, at long last, the truth about the downfall of America's most famous - and famously enigmatic - scientist. (The book) focuses a laser on those fraught years from 1949 to 1955, to chronicle the firestorm that surrounded Oppenheimer and the entire atomic enterprise in the years just after the war. These were the years that saw power shift from the scientist who had created the bomb, and were increasingly afraid of it, to the politicians who wanted to use it for their own purposes. A cabal of hard-line Air Force officials, anti-Communist politicians, and rival scientists came together to seize control of U.S. nuclear policy and build ever more deadly weapons aimed at the Soviet Union. One ambitious, relentless man - Edward Teller - used this opportunity to support his own ominous rise to authority, to promote the founding of the Livermore laboratory as a challenge to Los Alamos, and to redirect national resources into development of the controversial hydrogen bomb. He knew that only one man had the vision and abilities to thwart him: the magnetic Oppenheimer, who led a group of like-minded and farsighted liberal scientists advocating arms control. Teller found the perfect allies in Lewis Strauss - a highly partisan Republican banker and businessman, and a key figure in the increasingly polititcized Atomic Energy Commission - and in William Borden, a young congressional assistant. One breathtakingly beautiful Washington spring, in secret hearings in a rundown building off the Mall, as the nation's gaze was focused on the Army-McCarthy hearings, Strauss, Borden and Teller sprang their trap." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.
