THE CREATION OF A NATIONAL AIR FORCE. THE OFFICIAL HISTORY OF THE ROYAL CANADIAN AIR FORCE. VOLUME II (2 - TWO)., Douglas, W.A.B.
201 Douglas, W.A.B. THE CREATION OF A NATIONAL AIR FORCE. THE OFFICIAL HISTORY OF THE ROYAL CANADIAN AIR FORCE. VOLUME II (2 - TWO).
University of Toronto Press, Toronto, 1986.
797 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers. ISBN 0802025846 Profusely illustrated with photographs and maps (some fold-out). "From a small militia organization the Canadian air force had grown by 1945 into one of the country's three major autonomous military services. In this second volume of the RCAF's official history, covering the years from 1918 to 1945, W.A.B. Douglas chronicles the force's rapid growth and provides a vivid portrait of the Battle of the At lantic as it was fought from the eastern shores of Canada. Military necessity had brought Canada into the air age. In the peaceful 1920s, civil more than military concerns governed the shape, size, and functions of the RCAF; in the followi n g d e c a d e the rise of international tensions forced the service to concentrate on its military role. During the Second World War the RCAF grew from a few hundred airmen to a force of some eighty squadrons and nearly a quarter of a million pe op le . RC AF s qu adrons, wings, and groups took their place beside other Allied air forces in many theatres of the Second World War, and in the process acquired capabilities in virtually every phase of air warfare. The roots of the RCAF's growi ng rep ut a tio n i n o ver seas theatres, especially in the Northwest Europe campaign, were to be found at home. Responsible for the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan in Canada, the RCAF trained large numbers of other Commonwealth and Allied air men as we ll a s Ca nadi ans. Charged with the air defence of Canada, it built up a big Home War Establishment which fought on the Pacific Coast and also played a significant part in the defeat of enemy attempts to destroy Allied shipping, par ticu larl y i n t he Ba ttle of th e Atl antic. The latter was a crucial role, sustaining Great Britain and the Allied forces in Europe. Directed from headquarters at Halifax, aircraft of Eastern Air Command ranged from the St Lawrence River to mi d-oce an, u ltim atel y thwa rting Germa n U-bo ats that nearly severed the North Atlantic under British Command. Douglas's account is the first to give proper credit to the RCAF for the part it played in these operations. It also incorporates ne w info rmatio n on perso nalitie s, tec hnology , and i ntelligence." A heavy volume which may require extra postage. 131 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs. "(T)he story of a young Anglo-Irish beauty's visit to Delhi for the 1911 Royal Durbar, where a new King, George V, is to be proclaimed Emperor to reinforce the loyalty to the Crown of India's ruling Princes. For a fortnight of relentless ceremony, unheard of extravagance and imposing military spectacle, in the setting of a vast Tented City complete with its own farms, railway, telegraph and post offices, Lilah Wingfield meets many of the most remarkable colonial characters of the day, including some of the foremost Indian Princes, vying to stage the most lavish display to prove their devotion to the Raj. As the tents are dismantled, Lilah travels through India - to the dangerous Khyber Pass on the Afghan border, to Rajasthan, to the gory sites of the Mutiny and to stay with India's only female ruler, the Begum of Bhopal. Her diary shows her deepening awareness of the ambivalence of certain maharajahs towards British Rule even while she is being entertained royally in their lakeside palaces. Her Irish upbringing gives her an instictive feeling for the mixture of their longing for independence and an affection for the mother country." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has a few tiny/small dints on hinges, very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, tiny chip at bottom of spine.

THE ARROW., Dow, James.
203 Dow, James. THE ARROW.
Toronto James Lorimer 1979 0888622811 Hard Cover Very Good Good+
160 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "The Arrow (supersonic fighter) appeared on Avro's drawing boards in 1952 and was in the air by 1958. Test flights were a great success, and five aircraft had flown by 1959. Then came the dramatic decision whose rationale was not made public at the time, and which even now seems obscure. The Arrow was cancelled, and everything to do with it, including the planes that had already flown, was broken into scrap. Nothing was to remain. To tell the story of the Arrow, James Dow explores the impressive experience of Canada's aircraft industry, created from virtually nothing during the Second World War by C.D. Howe and recruits from the business world. Avro was put together when the government aircraft companies were sold off at the war's end. Avro's first postwar project was the Jetliner, conceived in 1945 for Air Canada (then TCA). It was very nearly the world's first passenger jet, and was first in the air in August 1949 only days behind Britain's Comet. Avro's military experience came with the CF-100 Canuck fighter, which flew first in 1951. There was even an experimental flying saucer, built for the U.S. armed forces. The Arrow was to be the culmination of this experience and this success." Previous owner's place, date and signature in ink on front free endpaper; some light toning to endpapers and to edges of text block, very tiny bump at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light to moderate rubbing, several small tears with creases at top edge, light edge wear, one small edge chip, protectedin a mylar sleeve.

Windrow & Greene, (London, 1996).
64 pp, small 4to (10 1/4" H), soft cover. Profusely illustrated with color photographs. "Unlike the household troops of many heads of state, The Guards have combined their role as the personal bodyguard of the Sovereign with an unsurpassed fighting tradition. This tradition is the cement that binds them together within The Household Division, whose motto is Septem Juncta in Uno - Seven Joined in One. Although The Household Division is an adminstrative rather than a fighting formation and although The Guards are most visible today for their central part in London's spectacular occasions of military and State pageantry, the Regiments are first and foremost professional soldiers, ready to exchange their ceremonial uniforms for comb at fatigues at short notice - as they proved most recently in the Falklands and Gulf Wars. Both aspects of their unique character are fully covered in the more than 120 superb colour photos specially taken for this book by a respected military photographer and author." "(T)ells the story of one of the great military elites of the past - the Rifleman. It shows him at his finest moment in the green jacket of the 95th Rifles in the wars against Napoleon. It reveals the way he fought, the weapons and equipment he used, and the tactics he perfected. First-hand accounts are matched by bri lliant colour reconstructions of the Rifleman, bringing the reality of the battle to the reader. The invention of the rifle gave a new twist to warfare. Hunters became soldiers who fought in green and hid behind cover - the days of brightly - u n i f o r med ranks of men exchanging volleys of fire was over. Developed in the forests of North America, the Rifleman revolutionised the art of war. In the campaigns against Napoleon, units of British Riflemen took on French light infantry a rm ed w it h mu sk ets. Trained to act independently and with a respect for his own skills, the Rifleman was an exceptionally intelligent warrior, the forefather of today's combat soldier. His greatest moments in the Peninsular War and at the bat tle of Wa ter lo o a re vividly described in first-hand accounts, but some of the myths of the Rifleman are also punctured." Pantheon, New York, 1976, first American edition.
215 pp, large 8vo (9 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0394496647 B&w photographs, map, diagrams. "(A) masterfully detailed reconstruction of what life was like for millions of men who lived and died in the trenches of World War I. Contin uing his trail-blazing approach to the study of war and militarism, Ellis reveals the physical and spiritual environment of this unique world, the rituals of battle, the habits of daily lfie, and the constant struggle of men to find meaning i n a w o r ld of excruciating boredom and impending death. (He) beings with a description of the physical construction of the trenches, their size and shape, their peculiarities and characteristics. The soldiers' daily life is succinctly portraye d: ho w t he y ate, drank, slept, joked, fought off rats and lice, how their sexual needs were met, and how they endured the marches and patrols. But it is in the ways men sought meaning in their daily lives that Ellis reveals the true nature of war f are . In an al yzing how the habits and regulations so dear to the military mind became entrenched in the organization of the battlefield, (this book) brilliantly depicts the instinctive desire of men in battle to create order out of chaos. Thr ou gh a n expl orat ion of the personal reflections of soldiers and the letters they wrote home, Ellis discovers a literature of compassion, courage, and a capacity to endure which arose from an environment of filth, decay, and death. It capt ures a w orld in whic h men fou ght, for reasons they hardly understood, for a future most had ceased to believe in by the end of the war."
