VERCORS CAVES. CLASSIC FRENCH CAVING - VOL. 1., Marshall, Des. Photographs by P.R. Deakin.
203 Marshall, Des. Photographs by P.R. Deakin. VERCORS CAVES. CLASSIC FRENCH CAVING - VOL. 1.
Cordee, Leicester, 1993.
100 pp, small 8vo (7 3/4" H), soft cover. ISBN 1871890713 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs and maps. "The Vercors is a spectacular limestone area just to the south west of Grenoble with a large diversity of scenery. Beneath its rugged mountains huge areas of bare lapiaz (limestone pavements) are host to some of the most dramatic caving in France. The Antre de Damnes, for example, descends to 720m including a fine 205m pitch whereas Scialet de Pot 2 is one of the deepest shafts i n France at 319m. The mountain sides are covered in fine conifers that give way to deciduous woods in which there are wonderful displays of wild flowers the further one descends. Here a huge variety of caves are found. Large undergound r i v e r s , l i ke the one in the Grotte de Gournier, can be explored for a great distance. Massive resurgence caves are found in the valleys of which Grotte de Bournillon and the Grotte de la Luire are perhaps the most well known. The Gouffre Be rg er i s pr ob a bl y the world's most famous cave which was the first to go below the magical 1000m depth during 1956. The guide has something for everyone, whether you like big shafts, underground rivers, multi-day trips or perhaps just a pleas ant af ter no on' s j au nt as an introduction to foreign caving. The guide does not pretend to be definitive, purely a personal selection of some of the best caves in the region with details of how to find them as well as ideas about accommodati on, equi pmen t, weat her, et c. A section on how to work out the map references will be very useful to many." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very light rubbing. Very Good+

OVER TO TUNIS: THE COMPLETE STORY OF THE NORTH AFRICAN CAMPAIGN., Marshall, Howard.
204 Marshall, Howard. OVER TO TUNIS: THE COMPLETE STORY OF THE NORTH AFRICAN CAMPAIGN.
London Eyre & Spottiswoode 1943 First Edition Hard Cover Good Fair Maps by L. Potter.
168 pp, 8 3/4" H. Map endpapers + 14 additional b&w maps. "It was Howard Marshall's job to broadcast the Tunisian campaign to the world. No other eye-witness not an actual protagonist has so complete a knowledge of the facts, and in this book he is able to give what could obviously not be given in a broadcast commentary - a balanced, comprehensive and outspoken account of both the military and political sides. The book opens with the first landings in November, 1942, and the failure of the first bid for Tunis. It then traces the development of the small original landing force into a magnificent army, and moves in a crescendo towards the final pulverising attack. The author analyses the reasons for the Allied success and the lessons to be derived from it. He deals at length with the political situation: the plots and counterplots of French political parties; the appointment and assassination of Darlan; the problems of General Giraud's administration; the whole confused background of intrigue and conspiracy in Algiers. The author also discusses the problems of broadcasting from a theatre of war, and describes the special complications of the work of a radio reporter." Some tiny light foxing marks on endpapers, darkening and three scratch marks to top of text block, light browning to edges of text block, book is slightly cocked, small bump to top edge of boards, minor soiling, small light stain on spine. Dust jacket has soiling, large piece missing from top of spine and part of rear panel, several small edge chips and tears, small piece missing from middle of spine, light edge wrinkling, moderate edge wear on spine.

University of Tennessee Press, Knoxville, 1983.
215 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0870493965 B&w photographs, maps. "On a November afternoon in 1864, the weary Gen. John Bell Hood surveyed the army waiting to attack the Federals at Franklin, Tennessee. He gave the signal almost at dusk, and the Confederates rushed forward to utter devastation. This book describes the events and causes of the five-hour battle in gripping detail, particularly focusing on the reasons for such slaughter at a time when the outcom e of the war had already been decided. The genesis of the senseless tragedy, according to (the authors), lay in the appointment of Hood to command the Army of Tennessee. It was his decision to throw a total force of some 20,000 men into an i l l - a d v ised frontal assault against the Union troops. The Confederates made their approach, without substantial artillery support, on a level of some two miles. Why did Hood select such a catastrophic strategy? The authors analyze his reas on in g in f ul l. Their vivid and moving narrative, with statements from eyewitnesses to the battle, make compelling reading for all Civil War buffs and historians." 282 pp, 9 1/4" H. Tables, map. "From the letters and fragmentary accounts of Robert Dugard of Rouen, Professor Miquelon has brought to life the history of an eighteenth-century trading company. Robert Dugard and his associates were men who came of age at the right moment to capitalize on the political and financial stability of France during the thirty years after Utrecht, and on the widening opportunities of colonial trade. Their Societe du Canada was founded in 1729 to handle the Quebec trade, but soon they were also testing the sugar island trade. By 1742 their business with the West Indies was more profitable than their Canadian trade. But catastrophe trod upon the heels of success: between 1744 and 1748 most of their fleet was lost to shipwreck and war. Of the three remaining ships one was broken up, another relegated to the fishery, and the third given over to sugar hauling. At Quebec, Dugard's factors, Havy and Lefebvre, had remained and prospered in the fur trade, Labrador sealing, and the trade with France. Professor Miquelon describes their activities, which continued until their business was completely destroyed by the Conquest of Canada." Bump to top of spine, three corners have tiny or small bump. Dust jacket has light to moderate rubbing, light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

"(The) definitive account of a tragic and awe-inspiring story: the rise of the Zulu nation in southern Africa under the great ruler Shaka , and its fall under Cetshwayo in the Zulu War of 1879. For more than a century after the European landing at Capetown in the seventeenth century, the Boers had advanced unopposed into the vast interior of Africa. It was not until 1824 that E u r o p e ans came face to face with another expanding and imperial power, the Zulus - the most formidable nation in black Africa. That confrontation eventually culminated in a bitter war betwen the Zulu warriors and Victoria's British Army. It wa s th e la st despairing effort of Africans to stem the tide of white civilization.
