THE DAY I OWNED THE SKY., Scott, Robert Lee, Jr., Brigadier General, USAF (Retired).
210 Scott, Robert Lee, Jr., Brigadier General, USAF (Retired). THE DAY I OWNED THE SKY.
Bantam, New York, 1988, first edition.
238 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0553052489 B&w photographs. Author of 'God Is My Co-Pilot". "In a richly generous account of his background and career, (the author) writes of his family's patient forbearance with th eir son's determination to become a flyer - including the hair-raising episode of young Robert's first flight in a human-powered glider in a leap off a neighbor's roof, and his much later, absolutely last-ditch battle to get into the fledglin g U . S . Army Air Corps. Concurrent with the grueling training that followed, Scott set himself to pursue - and won - his beloved lady, Kitty Rix. Once officially accepted by the Air Corps, he seized every opportunity to fly, volunteering for a ll ki nd s of extra duties, including danger-filled airmail runs in the dead of winter. By the time World War II broke out, he had built up an astounding number of flying hours, and, desperate to get into combat, was able to talk himself into the Pa c ifi c b om ber command - although he had never actually flown a bomber....But Scott was first and foremost a fighter pilot - and he proved it from his first day in the combat zone of the Burma-China theater. With Chennault's famed Flying Tig ers he ear ned a r eput a tion as a one-man air force, recording twenty-five kills by the time he was removed from that theater of battle. He writes with utter frankness of his bitter fight with one of Chennault's detractors; much of his subsequen t so jou rn in the Pen tagon w as devoted to extraordinary, and certainly extracurricular, maneuvering designed to get adequate weaponry out to the beleaguered command he had had to leave in Burma. Scott's all-out approach to living is the basis not only of hi s lif elong love aff air with flying but of his characteristic commitment to walk the entire length of the Great Wall of China - an ambition achieved at the age of seventy-two, disguised for a good part of the way as an unlikely si x-foo t-thr ee Geor gia-bo rn Chi nese." Du st jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds. Very Good+/Very Good+

Toronto Merritt 1980 092088606X / 9780920886069 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good Andre Bieler.
176 pp, 4to (11 3/4" H). Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w reproductions, b&w photographs. "This study of the life and work of Andre Bieler, one of Canada's most important living artists, spans eighty-three years of his life and art in Europe, the United States and Canada. It studies him against the flowering of twentieth-century Canadian art, a fascinating history in itself. (S)tarts with (his) birth in Switzerland in 1896, tracing his European family roots, his World War I experiences and his traditional artist's apprenticeship in Europe, his arrival in Canada as a young artist and subsequent exploration of the rural 'habitant' way of life in Quebec's L'ile d'Orleans and on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River. Most important, the author shows us the extraordinary creative energy of Andre Bieler, his exuberance and intense love of people and life that, even in his eighties, keep him experimenting in art, traveling across Canada, Europe and Mexico in search of his subject, and which define him as an artist of classic, versatile and sustained talent." Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of hinges and flap-folds, 1" faint line indentation on front panel, tiny dent/closed perforation on rear hinge.

633 SQUADRON: OPERATION VALKYRIE, Smith, Frederick E.
215 Smith, Frederick E. 633 SQUADRON: OPERATION VALKYRIE
Cassell, London, 1978, first edition.
235 pp, 8vo (8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0304300551 "It is now February 1944 and Air Commodore Davies and General Staines of the American 8th Air Force have just received one of Churchill's most feared ACTION THIS DAY directives. A you ng Norwegian officer, Paul Lindstrom, has arrived in England with the news that the Germans are shipping out a large consignment of heavy water in less than two weeks. Once in Germany it will be processed in a bomb-proof installation. The t h r e a t i s overwhelming: the stocks must be destroyed in transit. Davies is visibly shaken. 633 Squadron's cruel sacrifice the previous spring to kill the heavy water threat has left its mark on him, and the thought of having to send his crews b ac k in to No rway subdues his characteristic elan. He and Staines learn that a group of Norwegian freedom fighters led by Captain Haukelid intend trying to sabotage the consignment when it is in transit on the ferryboat 'Hydro'. What Haukelid do es no t k now , ho wever, is that the Germans intend to hedge their bets by sending half the consignment to a cruiser berthed at the head of the Hardanger Fjord. Because of elaborate security precautions, Lindstrom informs S.O.E. that these st ocks ca nno t be sab ot aged in transit: the cruiser itself must be sunk when the stocks are aboard. It sounds simple, but for all kinds of cogent reasons it is in fact an insoluble problem for 633 Squadron - until Frank Adams, the squadron's In telli genc e Of ficer , com es up wi th a bizarre suggestion that will involve Norwegian and American assistance. It will put the squadron in great peril, but with no other option open to Davies, the magnitude of the threat forces him to act. The extrao rdina ry mi ssion that f oll ows, w hich graphically illustrates the scacrifices and tragedies of war, makes a climax as vivid and compelling as anything the author has yet written about this famous Special Service Unit of Mosquitoes." Light cigare tte od or, fa int er ased pe ncil marks on free front end paper, book slightly cracked at title page - pages holding firmly, light browning to pages and edges of text block, slight wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor ed ge wear, soft c reases at top of rear panel , light rubbing, three tiny dints on hinges, light browning at top edge - very light on spine and flap-folds, two small areas of surface paper loss on front panel due to sticker removal. THE ART OF WAR: A NEW TRANSLATION., Sun Tzu. Translation, essays and commentary by the Denma Translation Group.
220 Sun Tzu. Translation, essays and commentary by the Denma Translation Group. THE ART OF WAR: A NEW TRANSLATION.
Shambhala, Boston, 2001, 4th printing.
250 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1570625522 "At the core of the ancient strategy manual known as 'The Art of War' is the understanding that conflict is an inescapable part of human life. Since, as Sun Tzu teaches, agg ression and response in kind can lead only to destruction, we must learn to work with conflict in a more profound and effective way. Crucial to this strategic vision is knowledge - especially self-knowledge - and a view of the whole that see k s t o b ring the conflicting views around to a larger perspective. This new and unusually faithful translation preseves the enigmatic quality of the original - allowing us to discover innumerable insights in its lines millenia after this oral t ra di t io n w as first set down. Line-by-line commentary and three extensive essays reveal the broader implications of Sun Tzu's teachings and how they can be applied to everyday circumstances. As a result, the classic's basic vocabulary takes o n n ew me ani ng . 'W ar' is any situation that demands hard choices about creation and destruction, life or death. The 'state' is the system in which we live - our household, our culture or society, or our own mind. 'Defense' ensures the integri ty o f o ur boun dar ie s an d allows life to flourish within them. And 'victory' lies in bringing others around to embracing a larger view - one that includes their own - without ever going to battle."
