"There has never been another theatre-building boom like the one occasioned by the explosive success of t he movies in the 1910s and 1920s. In Montreal alone, dozens of new theatres were built, not plain shoeboxes like modern cinemas, but huge and ornate halls with great domes glowing on distant ceilings and dizzying decorative schemes on the w a l l s . T hey were dream palaces, where ordinary people (for the mere price of a ticket) could sit amidst splendour and watch great dramas and romances unreel on the silver screen. This is the story of Montreal's movie palaces, as great and or na te a s an y o n the continent, of the businessmen and architects and craftsmen who built them, the masses who flocked to them, of the glory days they knew in their glamorous reign and the hard times they faced with the rise of TV. Dane Lanken spe nt twe nt y y ea rs st udying Montreal's movie palaces, interviewing the people who were there, searching for rare and previously unpublished archival photographs, and commissioning new views - while the theatres still stood - from leading arch itec tur al p hot ogra phe rs B ria n Merrett and Julie Greto. The result is a comprehensive and richly illustrated social, artistic, architectural and corporate history of an exuberant and little known era in Montreal's history." T.E. LAWRENCE TO HIS BIOGRAPHERS, ROBERT GRAVES AND LIDDELL HART., Lawrence, T.E.
208 Lawrence, T.E. T.E. LAWRENCE TO HIS BIOGRAPHERS, ROBERT GRAVES AND LIDDELL HART.
London Cassell 1963 Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good -
260 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w frontispiece. "Robert Graves and Basil Liddell Hart wrote the only two authorized biographies of T.E. Lawrence during his lifetime. Both knew the man well and at the time of his death on May 11th, 1935, their association with him had grown into understanding based on sympathetic knowledge and respect Yet the two had never met; Lawrence kept his friendships sealed off from one another as far as he was able. While engaged on their biographies, both wrote frequent letters asking him for elucidation of particular events and sent typescripts for his comments and corrections. Liddell Hart met him frequently for informal talks. After Lawrence's death, both made selections from the material in their possession which they thought best illustrated his character and qualities, and in 1939 published them in two companion volumes as a limited edition. Now, twenty-four years later, it is possible to republish these selections in a single volume. (T)hey throw a searching light upon a man who was twice a legend, once in his own lifetime, and now again after his death. Of particular interest is the way Lawrence showed different facets of his chameleon-like character to each of his friends. He said himself that he was more a legion than a man - an oblique reference to the demoniac of Gerasa in the Gospel - and here, placed side by side, is the evidence of two synonymous relationships of remarkably different character. His letters to Liddel Hart are businesslike, graphic, factual: to Graves they are more concerned with self-analysis, but cast a deliberate veil over the inner man, only rarely twitched aside. The total impression is a most persuasive defence against such as Adlington's attempts to explode the Arabian 'legend'. They build up a strong impression of Lawrence's particular talents, his remarkable achievements, his enigmatic personality." Previous owner's name stamp at top of both pastedown end papers, small store label at bottom of front pastedown, light patches of liquid staining on top of text block, minor soiling on bottom of text block, minor edge wear. An ex-library copy with the only library markings being a security tag on the rear endpaper and four lines of identification on the top right corner of the front free endpaper, crossed out with black felt pen. Dust jacket labels have been removed cleanly and shows no residue. Volume 2 of 'The L.M. Montgomery Reader' "narrates the development of L.M. Montgomery's critical reputation in the seventy years since her death in 1942. (It) traces milestones and turning points such as adaptations for stage and screen, posthumous publications, and the development of Montgomery Studies as a scholarly field. Lefebvre's introduction also considers Montgomery's publishing history in Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom at a time when her work remained in print not because it was considered part of a university canon of literature, but simply due to the continued interest of readers. The twenty samples of Montgomery scholarship included in this volume broach topics such as gender and genre, narrative strategies in fiction and life writing, translation, and Montgomery's archival papers. They reflect shifts in Montgomery's critical reputation decade by decade: the 1960s, when a milestone chapter on Montgomery coincided with a second wave of texts seeking to create a canon of Canadian literature; the 1970s, in the midst of a sustained reassessment of popular fiction and of literature by women; the 1980s, when the publication of Montgomery's life writing, which coincided with the broadcast of critically acclaimed television productions adapted from her fiction, radically altered how readers perceived her and her work; the 1990s, when a conference series on Montgomery began to generate a sustained amount of scholarship; and the opening years of the twenty-first century, when the field of Montgomery Studies became both international and interdisciplinary. This is the first book to consider the posthumous life of one of Canada's most eduringly popular authors." Very minor wear on bottom edge of boards, a small crease at top corner of half-title page, a progressively smaller light bump at top corner of pages 1 thru 80. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top edge, minor surface rubbing, two partial pieces of cello-tape on inside surface, a tiny dent on rear hinge.

These essays and interviews are augmented by additional pieces that discuss her work's literary and cultural value in relation to an emerging canon of Canadian literature. THE STAR SEEKERS. A SCIENCE FICTION NOVEL., Lesser, Milton.
215 Lesser, Milton. THE STAR SEEKERS. A SCIENCE FICTION NOVEL.
Philadelphia John C. Winston 1953 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good- Good- Paul Calle, dust jacket design. Endpaper design by Alex Schomburg.
212 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "When man tackles the first really long journey - across twenty-six trillion miles of uncharted space - to the nearest star, it will take him two hundred years to complete the flight. Not until the sixth generation nears maturity will the starship reach its destination. Around this fascinating theme, Milton Lesser has woven a tale of the first starship's final days of flight. He pictures the ship as a hollowed-out meteorite composed of four concentric circles - a world in which civilization has deteriorated and superstition risen to a high pitch, making those within unaware of the fact that they are traveling through space or that their journey is destined to end. All Mikal knew when he embarked on the 'Journey of the Four Circles' was that every eighteen-year-old from Astrosphere, the outermost circle, must visit each of the other circles if he hoped to become an Engineer. But before he completed his trip, he unearthed startling truths that threw the four circles into a state of chaos. Gradually Mikal discovered that unless the people of the four circles took immediate action the ship was doomed to crash. Mikal's desperate efforts to unite the four circles in order to save their world is a story of rising tension and clashing interests. Not only is this a tale of man's triumph over the barriers of space, but a fabulously exciting epic of civilization's victory over superstition and complacency. With subtle satire the author has written one of the most realistic and unforgettable stories ever to appear in the science fiction field." Light edge wear, a few very small light stains on fore-edge of text block, a few small and tiny light stains on pages 64 & 65, slight mark on copyright page, scattered color loss on both outside hinges, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. THE TOM THOMSON MYSTERY., Little, William T. Foreword by W.J. Eastaugh.
220 Little, William T. Foreword by W.J. Eastaugh. THE TOM THOMSON MYSTERY.
Toronto McGraw-Hill 1970 0070926557 / 9780070926554 Hard Cover Good+ Good+
239 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w photographs, reproductions, map. "In 1956, nearly forty years after the death of Canadian artist, Tom Thomson, William T. Little and three companions set themselves to a macabre task. Ever since July 16, 1917, when the artist's badly decomposed body was found floating in the waters of Canoe Lake, controversy and conjecture hovered over the matter of how Tom Thomson really met his death. It was as a result of this prolonged uncertainty that the four men began digging in the little cemetery in Algonquin Park where Thomson was supposedly buried. They were determined to solve, if only for themselves, part of the mystery that surrounded the name of Tom Thomson. What they discovered only confirmed their suspicion that the full story of Thomson's untimely death was not in fact as history had recorded it. The lack of sound and conclusive evidence from earlier investigations set William Little into action. Meticulously he pieced together everything that had ever been written, documented, speculated, or theorized about Thomson during the artist's lengthy periods in Algonquin Park - with special emphasis on those strange events which occurred prior to and after his 'accidental death by drowning'. On the one hand William Little has been able to give us a fuller understanding of both Thomson's personality and his instincts as a painter. On the other, he has amassed considerable evidence that suggests a murder, a suspect, and a motive." Large diagonal creasing on page leaf xiii/xiv, small light stain on fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has light browning at edges and on spine/flap-folds, several very small edge tears and one small 'v' tear on front hinge - all archivally taped, light rubbing/soiling, large corner crease on front flap.
