THE FIGHTING COCK: BEING THE HISTORY OF THE 23rd INDIAN DIVISION, 1942-1947., Doulton, A.J.F., Lieut.-Colonel. Foreword by Lieut.-General Sir Reginald Savory.
201 Doulton, A.J.F., Lieut.-Colonel. Foreword by Lieut.-General Sir Reginald Savory. THE FIGHTING COCK: BEING THE HISTORY OF THE 23rd INDIAN DIVISION, 1942-1947.
Aldershot Gale & Polden 1951 First Edition Good+ Good-
318 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). B&w photographs, maps (including 2 fold-outs at rear) - collated. "Here is the story of a famous Indian Division which will be of interest not only to those who wore the 'Fighting Cock' badge but to those who served in the campaigns in Burma which led to the defeat of the Japanese, covering as it does the whole period from 1942 when the Division was formed to the victory in Burma and later in Java. The book contains a particularly vivid picture of the blood-bath in Java and shows how, in this little-known 'war', the Division kept bright its reputation for gallant conduct and high endeavour." Tiny to small stains at bottom of pages 20/21 - migrate slightly into adjacent pages, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny bump at top corner and light cloth fraying at bottom corner of front board, some light wrinkling of cloth on rear board, slight browning of edges. Dust jacket has several small tears and very small chips, general light soiling, slight darkening to spine, light edge wrinkling, light rubbing, browning to inside surface.

THROUGH GERMAN EYES: THE BRITISH AND THE SOMME 1916., Duffy, Christopher.
203 Duffy, Christopher. THROUGH GERMAN EYES: THE BRITISH AND THE SOMME 1916.
London Weidenfeld & Nicolson 2006 0297846892 / 9780297846895 First Edition Very Good Very Good
383 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, maps, drawings. ""The Battle of the Somme has an enduring legacy, the image of 'lions led by donkeys' established by Alan Clark; of brave British soldiers sent to their deaths by incompetent generals. but, as Duffy reveals in this groundbreaking study, this was never the German view; indeed, the Germans had great respect for the British forces. The evidence for this is both copious and unfamiliar, discovered in archived official papers, histories, memoirs and letters, and most revealingly of all in the results of the interrogation of British prisoners of war. The picture that emerges is a far cry from 'Blackadder'. The questioning by German intelligence officers was more systematic and detailed than that employed by their British counterparts. It was also more open-ended, encouraging those captured to speak freely and at length whilst still in shock from combat and capture. Their recollections are of unique interest because of their immediacy, separated from the event by a matter of hours or a few days at most, rather than being contaminated by the passing of time and outside opinion. This is not another of the number of comprehensive histories of the Battle of the Somme. Instead it looks at aspects of the battle from the German point of view, showing in particular the Germans' perception of the British performance and mentality in the course of that long struggle. From the German point of view, the battle was a disaster. And the fact that every British soldier taken prisoner still believed Britian would win the war gave German intelligence teams a fair indication that their empire would go down to defeat." Minor cigarette odor, very light browning to edges of textblock, faint thumb print at fore-edge of free front endpaper. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of spine.

New York Del Rey / Ballantine First printings. Very Good Cover art by Jim Burns. Map by Steve Palmer.
The four volumes of the "A Handful of Men" quartet - 6 7/8" H. 1. The Cutting Edge - 307 pp, 1993 first printing, ISBN 034538167X. "Beautiful Queen Inos married the loyal stableboy Rap and made him her king. Fifteen years went by, Rap and Inos were comfortable, secure, and truly happy, raising their family in the little backwater kingdom of Krasnegar, well removed from the hurly-burly of great affairs. But in far-off Hub, the old Imperor's health - and, some said, his sanity - deteriorated inexorably. The borderlands were seething. Prince Emshandar - or Shandie, as Rap knew him - found himself leading his grandather's armies into terrible battles where victory and justice hung in gravest doubt. And now the end of the millennium was at hand, ushered in by prophecies of cataclysmic upheaval on a scale never before imagined. All across Pandemia, sensible people tried to dismiss a growing sense of unease as superstitious nonsense. Then a God appeared to Rap and warned him that the prophecies spoke the least of the truth. Devastation was a certainty; total destruction loomed. The very fabric of the world was at risk. And it was all Rap's fault. The last thing in the world Rap wanted was another adventure. And it might be the last thing he would ever get - ." 2. Upland Outlaws - 299 pp, 1993 first printing, ISBN 0345384776. "The power-mad dwarf-sorcerer Zinixo had driven Emshandar V from his throne. He had shattered the ancient Protocol that kept tenuous peace among Pandemia's warlocks. And his conquest had only begun. Somehow the deposed Imperor had escaped his clutches - so far - but Shandie would soon be found. Then the Impire would be Zinixo's alone. Outlying countries would fall beneath his fist. And at long last, he would wreak fabulous revenge upon Rap of Krasnegar. For Zinixo wielded the greatest magic ever imagined: an army of slave-sorcerers bound to serve his every whim - to the death." 3. The Stricken Field - 338 pp, 1994 first printing, ISBN 0345388747. "The 'forces' opposing the tyrant (Zinixo) were paltry, their leaders few. Now as armies both magic and mundane swept across the lands, each rebel leader carried the flame of freedom to a different corner of troubled Pandemia. Shandie rode north - into disaster. Raspnex (Zinixo's warlock uncle) disappeared, pursuing his own secret plans. And Rap toiled through fetid, steaming jungles in search of a powerful troll-witch who did not want to be found - all unaware that his loved ones were far from home, and further yet from any prayer of safety." 4. The Living God - 429 pp, 1994 first printing, ISBN 034538878X. "The sorcerer Zinixo had declared himself Almighty, and none could doubt that the end of the era was at hand. Goblin hordes ravished the Impire. Dragons incinerated entire legions in the space of a heartbeat. The slave-sorcerers of the Covin practiced whatever barbarities Zinixo required. Soon would come midsummer, and the Nordland Moot, and the smell of blood upon the air. Soon the mad dwarf-sorcerer would truly reign supreme - unless Rap of Krasnegar could conjure a miracle at the end of the millennium. Rap and his rebels were recruiting any magic-users the Covin had not yet perverted. And when the time came to move against Zinixo - if it came - they would aim one single, killing blow against the tyrant. It wasn't much of a plan. But it was all they had - ." Interiors - Part One has very light browning to pages, Part Four has one page with a small corner crease, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exteriors - Part One has light browning to edges of text block and light wear on front hinge; the other books have very light edge wear.

THE GUARDS: BRITAIN'S HOUSEHOLD DIVISION. EUROPA MILITARIA No. 20., Dunstan, Simon.
208 Dunstan, Simon. THE GUARDS: BRITAIN'S HOUSEHOLD DIVISION. EUROPA MILITARIA No. 20.
Windrow & Greene, (London, 1996).
64 pp, small 4to (10 1/4" H), soft cover. Profusely illustrated with color photographs. "Unlike the household troops of many heads of state, The Guards have combined their role as the personal bodyguard of the Sovereign with an unsurpassed fighting tradition. This tradition is the cement that binds them together within The Household Division, whose motto is Septem Juncta in Uno - Seven Joined in One. Although The Household Division is an adminstrative rather than a fighting formation and although The Guards are most visible today for their central part in London's spectacular occasions of military and State pageantry, the Regiments are first and foremost professional soldiers, ready to exchange their ceremonial uniforms for comb at fatigues at short notice - as they proved most recently in the Falklands and Gulf Wars. Both aspects of their unique character are fully covered in the more than 120 superb colour photos specially taken for this book by a respected military photographer and author." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - clean and bright. Fine.
