21 Fenton, R.S. MERSEY ROVERS: THE COASTAL TRAMP SHIP OWNERS OF LIVERPOOL AND THE MERSEY.
Gravesend, Kent World Ship Society 1997 0905617843 / 9780905617848 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
344 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, b&w profiles on endpapers, colour reproductions of flags & funnels. "In 'Mersey Rovers' will be found many of the owners of bulk-carrying steam and motor coasters which were primarily engaged in, for want of a better word, the tramp trades. All began their shipowning careers at Liverpool or another Mersey port; several migrating from Wales to do this, others succumbing to the lure of Liverpool after a successful start at a minor port on the Mersey. Several important Liverpool owners covered in past or planned World Ship Society publications have been omitted, including the Coe, Kennaugh, Monks and Monroe families. Also left out are owners of craft engaged largely in regular liner services and in river and estuarial trades. As the inclusions and exclusions are likely to become confusing, all the local coastal shipowners of significance have been listed in the Miscellany section. The emphasis in this book is on steam and motor coasters and, for reasons explained in 'Cambrian Coasters', sailing ships will not be found in the fleet lists, although some are referred to in the histories. (I) have attempted to examine common strands in the histories of Mersey coasters and their owners and the Introductory Survey aims to place the ports, trades, owners and ships of the river in an historical and geographical context. Writing this, I have tried to answer the question, 'Why did the Mersey become such a centre for coastal shipowning?'." From the Foreword. Light waviness to edges of text block, book is lightly cocked, slight wrinkle at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, some light wrinkling at top edge.

22 Ferguson, Julie H. THROUGH A CANADIAN PERISCOPE: THE STORY OF THE CANADIAN SUBMARINE SERVICE.
Toronto Dundurn Press 1995 1550022172 / 9781550022179 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
364 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photos, maps. "(O)ffers a colourful and thoroughly researched account of Canada's silent service, from its unexpected inauguration in British Columbia on the first day of the Great War to its uncertain future today. After describing the activities of the submarine service during and after World War I, (the author) details the careers of the Canadians who served with distinction in British submarines in all theatres of World War II. She goes on to examine the modern era, from the rebirth of the service in the 1960s to the present, and provides little-known information about the controversial Conservative initiative for nuclear-powered submarines in 1987. Above all, this vivid account celebrates the individuals who dedicated and in some instances gave their lives to Canada's submarine service." One tiny edge bump. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, minor rubbing, tiny dent on front panel.

256 pp, large 8vo, (9 3/8" H). B&w maps, photographs. "History's overriding view of the Dieppe raid in 1942 is that of a catastrophic disaster, with thousands of Canadian and British troops killed or captured. Often overlooked is No 4 Commando's successful supporting element of the raid to disable the heavy German guns that threatened the supporting ships at sea. No 4 Commando's training and preparation for their part in the raid was an excellent example of operational planning, its leadership was superb and its luck held. Quite apart from this first use of Commando's, this raid was also the first instance in which US troops fired shots at their European enemy in WWII. Will Fowler has been able to interview surviving members of No 4 Commando, and with extensive research of official records has pieced together a terrific blow by blow account of one of the most daring early Commando raids of the Second World War." 28 Frank, Barbara E. MANDE POTTERS & LEATHERWORKERS: ART AND HERITAGE IN WEST AFRICA.
Smithsonian Institution Press, Washington, (1998), Ist printing.
192 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1560987944 Profusely illustrated with b&w and color photos and drawings. "Among the Mande-speaking groups dispersed throughout much of West Africa, certain artists - including potters and l eatherworkers - form a spiritually powerful social class in which gender determines craft specialization. Ceramic water jars and cooking pots are made only by the wives and female relatives of blacksmiths. Leather objects such as knife shea t h s , a m ulet cases, and, more recently, western-style shoes and bags are produced by male leatherworkers. While these objects display features common to those of other West African groups, the manner in which they are produced has remained dis ti nc tl y M an de . Analyzing the work of Mande potters and leatherworkers, (the author) argues that studying craft technologies in addition to object styles is essential to reconstructing the art heritage of an ethnically complex region. Drawing on ar cha eo lo gic al and historical evidence as well as her field research in Mali, she shows how tools and practices such as potters' use of convex molds and leatherworkers' adherence to specific knife blade shapes serve to distinguish the good s ma de b y Ma nde ar tist s f rom those of neighboring groups. She also discusses the pride the potters take in their healing and spiritual knowledge, and the sense of difference between craftsmen who specialize exclusively in leatherworking and those who doubl e as bar ds an d mu sicians. Examining the roles of Mande leatherworkers and potters in the rise and fall of empires, the development of trans-Saharan trade networks, and the spread of Islam, Frank questions the 'one-tribe, one-st yle' i nterp retati ons t hat h ave do minat ed studies of West African art. Focusing on two traditions that have been little studied, (this book) explores the complex, shifting relationships among the identities of Mande craftspeople, the objects they cr eate, and the techn ologie s they use." National Museum of Man, Ottawa, 1980.
168 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0660103478 Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour. "Indian trade silver is a fascinating and little-known part of our cultural heritage - a product of the interaction between two prof oundly different cultures during the European exploration of North America. Originating in the early diplomatic gifts of medals to friendly Indians, the distribution of silver became widespread during the height of the fur trade, 1760 to 18 2 1 . S i l ver ornaments designed specifically for the fur trade included brooches, gorgets, armbands, legbands, earrings, nose-rings, crosses and headbands. A travelling exhibition of over two hundred of these ornaments was organized by the Nati on al M u se um o f Man, Ottawa, and this book was written to accompany it. Previously known only to scholars and collectors, this unusual art form has now become accessible to a much wider public. The silver ornaments created for the fur trade we re pro du c ed by bot h European and colonial silversmiths, but the Iroquois began to make similar pieces for their people after silver ceased to be available through the fur trade. Although the craft died out, it has recently been revived, and the ex hibi tio n inc lud es m any examples of modern Iroquois workmanship. Some pieces are based on traditional trade-silver patterns, but others are of the silversmiths' own design. The book illustrates and describes all the silver chosen for the e xhib ition fro m muse ums in Ca nada and the United States. Paintings and portraits of the period shows the colourful and unexpected ways the Indians wore their silver jewellery." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. THE GATECRASHERS., Fullerton, Alexander. Dust jacket art by Michael Turner.
31 Fullerton, Alexander. Dust jacket art by Michael Turner. THE GATECRASHERS.
Michael Joseph, London, 1984, first edition.
297 pp + postscript, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0718123786 Map endpapers. "Horribly cramped, it lurched sickeningly while being towed and tended to be dripping wet inside. The X-craft midget submarine was hardly the obvious choice of vessel to pitch against the mighty battleship 'Tirpitz' in her Norwegian lair. Like pitching a tadpole against a whale; but in this case, the whale had a soft underbelly and the tadpole a pair of two-ton explosive stings like blisters on its sides. If the sub could survive its nightmarish 1,000-mile haul across the North Sea, Paul Everard would have his chance to gatecrash the fjords - past minefields, patrol craft, shore defences and steel nets - and cripple the ship which Churchi ll had called 'the Beast'. Even if he succeeded, the chances of escaping alive were slim. If he failed, Nick Everard, commanding Arctic convoy PQ19, was in for a pounding. None of his ships could hope to match the firepower of the 'Tirpit z ' o r p i erce her fifteen-inch armour. As 'The Gatecrashers' draws to its thunderous climax, father and son, their lives balancing on a knife-edge, face their final, most searching test. 'The Gatecrashers' is based on the true story of Operat io n S ou rc e : si x X-craft crossed the North Sea in September 1943 to attack the 'Tirpitz, Scharnhorst' and 'Lutzow' in Altenfjord, where they were kept out of bomber range behind formidable defences. Although (this book) stands on its own as a nov el , it is al so th e ninth and last in the Everard series of naval adventures, which started with Nick as a somewhat bloody-minded midshipman at Jutland in 1916. Although fictional, the setting of each story is historically and technically ac cura te. Cap tai n J .E. Moo re, Editor of 'Jane's Fighting Ships', had written: 'I have not found this splendid authenticity in any naval fiction since C.S. Forester's heyday'." Faint cigarette odor. Dutton, New York, 2002, first edition.
400 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 052596640 B&w photographs, reproductions. "(T)he incredible story of an extraordinary group of American artists, designers, and engineering wizards who became America's unsung heroes o f the Second World War....The men of the 23d Headquarters Special Troops were recruited to become phantom warriors in a ghost army to help win the Battle of Europe. They fought in more campaigns, from D-Day to the Rhine River, with more All i e d a r m i es, than any other unit in the European Theater of Operations - yet not even their fellow American soldiers were aware of their presence. After Douglas Fairbanks Jr., USNR, completed a tour of England and its special forces installat io ns , t he H ol ly wood star convinced the Navy brass to train an elite unit that eventually evolved into the only Army force of its kind - a top-secret band of unknown heroes. These elite soldiers counted among their number designer Bill Blass and pa in te r E lls wor th Kelly, and were inspired by Hilton Howell Railey, the 'P.T. Barnum of Deception'. The Special Troops' mission was twofold: to deceive the German army into believing that the Allies possessed more troops and materiel tha n th ey a ctu all y di d an d, e ven more heroically, to draw enemy fire on their position to allow other units to advance free of lethal resistance. Through the art of camouflage, sonic deception, and illusion this extraordinary troops of brave, ingen ious men save d cou ntles s Ame rica n lives - while sometimes losing their own. From the use of inflatable rubber tanks and howitzers to elaborate sound effects, fake radio transmissions, special effects artillery fire, and other elements of stage craft , th ese s hadow soldie rs put thei r lives on the line for their brother soldiers and for their country - only to disappear from history and memory." London Caxton 2002 1840671645 / 9781840671643 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
430 pp, 9 1/2" H. "(A) chronicle of shipping disasters during the last great war of the age of sail, based almost exclusively on the reporting of the time. Listed are some fifteen hundred ships, vessels naval and mercantile, of many nations whose tribulations were covered in the national and local newspapers as well as the specialist press like the 'Naval Chronicle'. These reports run the whole gamut of maritime tragedies - the bizarre, curious and quirky, as well as the familiar - and in all their inconsequential detail. Through the medium of the reporting of the time, what is here presented is a truly contemporary perspective of events, in itself a fascinating revelation of the mores and attitutudes of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Given the sheer number of craft lost at sea, it cannot be entirely exhaustive, but no other book contains so much non-technical information on the maritime disasters of the period 1793-1815." WOLFE AT QUEBEC., Hibbert, Christopher.
35 Hibbert, Christopher. WOLFE AT QUEBEC.
Longmans, Green, London, 1959, first edition.
194 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates, maps. "In the early hours of the morning on 13th September 1759, a British flotilla drifted silently on the ebb tide down the St Lawrence River towards Quebec. A last and desperate at tempt was being made to capture the town before the ice closed over the river and made further operations that season impossible. By dawn over 4,000 men had disembarked from the landing craft and clambered up the steep and slippery slopes on t o t h e Plains of Abraham. The French were taken completely by surprise and the battle that followed was short and dramatic. By noon the fate of Canada had been decided. In describing the events of this day and the bitter and seemingly hopel e ss s i eg e th at preceded it, (the author) has relied entirely upon contemporary sources, some of which were not available when previous accounts were written. For this reason the story which has emerged is in some respects an unfamiliar one an d the in ci den ta l p ortrait of Wolfe, stripped of the sentimental veneer which two centuries of adulation have built around him, is one which will surprise many readers. (This book) provides not only a vivid account of what has been described a s the most im port ant eve nt in the history of the 18th century, but a fascinating portrait of one of its most famous soldiers." "The main body of the text is devoted to a complete and authoritative alphabetical list of all the craftsmen known to have made violins or other stringed instruments as works of art in the German-speaking lands of Central Europe. It incorporates all the researches of earlier authorities, corrects some previous misconceptions, and sheds new light not only on established figures but also on the rising generation of 20th century makers. Each of over 4,000 makers is described in a brief biography, and there are comments on the style, tone and value of their instruments. There are over 800 photographs showing clearly the important points to look for in the work of the chief masters, and illustrating labels known to be authentic as an aid to identification, and there is an introduction outlining the growth of the major German schools...a complete historical survey of the subject, and traces the development of the craft in such famous centres as Markneukirchen, Mittenwald, the Tyrol, Vienna and Stuttgart. It draws a vivid picture of the nature of life and the changing structure of society in Central Europe during the centuries from the time when the violin developed from more primitive instruments right up to the present day." 278 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "Hans-Ulrich Rudel was called 'the Eagle of the Eastern Front'. Just six weeks later the 'Bravest of the Brave', as the soldiers also called him, was flying again despite being forbidden to ---" This is a heavy book and may require extra postage, depending on destination.
