THE WAY TO LIFE: AT THE HEART OF THE TAO TE CHING., Hoff, Benjamin.
21 Hoff, Benjamin. THE WAY TO LIFE: AT THE HEART OF THE TAO TE CHING.
Weatherhill, New York, (1981), Ist edition.
86 pp, oblong 16mo (6 1/4" H x 9 1/8" D), hard cover (blue cloth with silver lettering on spine) in dust jacket. 16 color photographs. "These new and extremely creative versions (of the Tao Te Ching) by Benjamin Hoff, accompanied by an introduction to the basics of Taoist philosophy, bring the words of the sage to life once again. The Tao Te Ching, or Tao Virture Classic, concerns the working of Tao, the way or path to life in harmony with natural laws. The Tao Te Ching cautions us to seek wisdom rather than knowledge: 'Along the way to knowledge, many things are accumulated. Along the way to wisdom, many things are discarded'. In just this manner, Benjamin Hoff has succeeded in dispersing the mysteries surrounding this ancient text and in reducing the Taoist philosophy to a straightforward message, ever intriguing but no longer elusive. Such basic principles of Taoism as the uncarved block, the source, and the wu wei are given lucid definition. And in further accordance with the Taoist belief that words are an insufficient vehicle for conveying the meaning of Tao, sixteen color photographs are juxtaposed to selected passages, reflecting their essential truth..." T.E. LAWRENCE TO HIS BIOGRAPHERS, ROBERT GRAVES AND LIDDELL HART., Lawrence, T.E.
27 Lawrence, T.E. T.E. LAWRENCE TO HIS BIOGRAPHERS, ROBERT GRAVES AND LIDDELL HART.
London Cassell 1963 Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good -
260 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w frontispiece. "Robert Graves and Basil Liddell Hart wrote the only two authorized biographies of T.E. Lawrence during his lifetime. Both knew the man well and at the time of his death on May 11th, 1935, their association with him had grown into understanding based on sympathetic knowledge and respect Yet the two had never met; Lawrence kept his friendships sealed off from one another as far as he was able. While engaged on their biographies, both wrote frequent letters asking him for elucidation of particular events and sent typescripts for his comments and corrections. Liddell Hart met him frequently for informal talks. After Lawrence's death, both made selections from the material in their possession which they thought best illustrated his character and qualities, and in 1939 published them in two companion volumes as a limited edition. Now, twenty-four years later, it is possible to republish these selections in a single volume. (T)hey throw a searching light upon a man who was twice a legend, once in his own lifetime, and now again after his death. Of particular interest is the way Lawrence showed different facets of his chameleon-like character to each of his friends. He said himself that he was more a legion than a man - an oblique reference to the demoniac of Gerasa in the Gospel - and here, placed side by side, is the evidence of two synonymous relationships of remarkably different character. His letters to Liddel Hart are businesslike, graphic, factual: to Graves they are more concerned with self-analysis, but cast a deliberate veil over the inner man, only rarely twitched aside. The total impression is a most persuasive defence against such as Adlington's attempts to explode the Arabian 'legend'. They build up a strong impression of Lawrence's particular talents, his remarkable achievements, his enigmatic personality." Previous owner's name stamp at top of both pastedown end papers, small store label at bottom of front pastedown, light patches of liquid staining on top of text block, minor soiling on bottom of text block, minor edge wear. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, tiny tear at bottom of rear hinge, light rubbing, minor soiling.

These essays and interviews are augmented by additional pieces that discuss her work's literary and cultural value in relation to an emerging canon of Canadian literature. JAINISM AND THE NEW SPIRITUALITY., Parikh, Vastupal.
34 Parikh, Vastupal. JAINISM AND THE NEW SPIRITUALITY.
Peace Publications, Toronto, 2002.
226 pp, large 8vo (9" H), soft cover. ISBN 0968986307 "Jainism is an ancient Indian religion, one with historical wisdom surprisingly relevant for the 21st century. This book is intended for two audiences: for those who want to understand the bas ic ideas and story of Jainism and also for those who seek ethical principles that may help society meet current challenges. The book begins with Professor Parikh's own search for meaning, starting from a career as a scientist where religion a n d r e l ated philosophy were seen as somewhat secondary pursuits. The struggle to understand the many problems of the 20th century led the author to rediscover for himself key Jain teachings. He found that the logic of the Jain worldview, and i ts d o ct ri ne s....would resonate well with the rational mindset of the modern generations, and would, thereby assist them in their struggle to resolve many issues currently facing our planet. The book explains key Jain principles and practic es in a s im ple lu cid language and reconciles these with current topics that might be understood as 'new spirituality' - the widespread attempts to reassert human rights, recognize the interdependence of humans and the environment, and achieve b oth pe rson al fulf illm ent and social justice." 128 pp, 9 15/16" H. Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w. "(T)he great tales, myths and legends of Arthur, Guinevere, Merlin, the Knights of the Round Table and the Quest for the Holy Grail have been vividly recreated in the stunning plates of modern Celtic artwork for which Courtney Davis enjoys a fully justified world reputation. With an accompanying text by Celtic writer Helena Paterson, (this book) begins by retracing Arthur's past life in a series of cameos from the ancient Arthurian saga. Then, mindful of our own New Age of self-discovery and awareness of the continuity of ancient wisdom, the text provides an in-depth analysis of the spiritual nature of Celtic traditions. The combination of superb graphic imagery and a dedicated, sympathetic commentary show how the Arthurian legends remain one of the classic voyages of discovery, symbolically depicting the human struggle for a spiritual evolution through physical deeds. It is a theme as relevant today as it ever was in the past." Light to moderate edge wear on boards, tiny bump at top corners. Dust jacket has minor edge wear, very light edge wrinkling.

CONNIE WOODLAND., Phillpotts, Eden.
36 Phillpotts, Eden. CONNIE WOODLAND.
London Hutchinson 1956 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
240 pp, small 8vo (7 1/2" H). "In one love Connie is unshakeable: that which she feels for the wild countryside of Dartmoor. But when it comes to the young men in her life she is less decided. There is much to be said for either - for the attractive young master carpenter, Robert Fontaine, of romantic French extraction, and for George Redvers, the honest young labourer, as simple-minded as herself. And if Robert shows less than respect for the country which is so dear to Connie, it is true also that George likes to shoot the wild creatures she loves. But it is more momentous matters than these which force Connie to make her choice, and in doing so, to act against her true heart. In this story of West Country life the problems of various characters are at least resolved when, with the coming of the 1914 war, each in his own fashion finds that he can serve his fellows. In its wisdom, its wit, and its warmheartedness it is typical of its author. Eden Phillpotts is a veteran storyteller still without rivals in the telling of a country tale." 254 pp, 9 1/4" H. "From Canada's most outspoken novelist and essayist comes a broadside of outrageous remarks, irreverent wisdom and wickedly accurate criticism. Whether surveying the international literary scene or considering the excesses of pop psychology, Mordecai Richler attacks his diverse subjects with relish and devastating wit. We learn about Richler's opinions on everything from movieland to conspiracy theories, from reincarnation to orgies, and from political wives to male impotence in 14th century France. But there is another side to Richler - a kinder, gentler man who celebrates marriage and friendship, fatherhood and harmony. 40 Shea, Michael. A VIEW FROM THE SIDELINES.
Sutton, Stroud, 2003, first edition.
189 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0750932457 "As a distinguished diplomat and for ten years the Queen's widely respected Press Secretary, Michael Shea had a privileged insight into the lives of the truly famous and powe rful. In this hugely entertaining book, he interweaves personal experience, anecdote and reflection to create a different perspective on recent history and on the celebrated individuals who have 'strutted their stuff on the public stage over t h e l a st forty years'. Taking as his framework diplomatic postings to Berlin, Ghana, Bonn, Bucharest and New York, and later his unexpected secondment to Buckingham Palace, Shea regales us with vivid behind-the-scenes accounts of encounters w i th a we s om e dictators like Nicolae Ceaucescu as well as minor tyrants like media magnate Robert Maxwell; spies and counter-spies in a Cold War Europe straight out of Le Carre; glittering banquets with US presidents and desert potentates; and t he pl eas ure s and p erils of 'minding' the great and the good, from Harold Wilson to Princess Diana, from Margaret Thatcher to the Queen. We remember the famous and the infamous for their great public moments but, as Michael Shea brilliantly de mon stra tes, it is the ti ny incidents, the facial expression or remark caught off camera, that really define the wisdom or weakness of those who have impressed or shocked us." Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top of spine, minor rubbing. Fi ne/V ery G ood+
