YESTERDAY'S TOWN: WELLINGTON. A DIARY OF A WEST COUNTRY TOWN IN THE 19th CENTURY., Allen, Gillian.
21 Allen, Gillian. YESTERDAY'S TOWN: WELLINGTON. A DIARY OF A WEST COUNTRY TOWN IN THE 19th CENTURY.
Buckingham Barracuda 1987 0860232921 / 9780860232926 Limited Edition Very Good Very Good
124 pp, small 4to (10 7/16" H). Number 368 of a limited edition. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "(I)t is the detail of the 19th century record which attracts us most; the people who lived in specific houses like the Millers, Langleys and Merediths; the controversy about the three posts outside the White Hart Inn; the shops that changed from bank to fishmonger, from watchmaker to cobbler, from Bell Inn to basketmaker; the man who dug a canal in his garden to employ poor people; the ten-year-old who died when her pinny caught fire; the horse that took nine men to the gallows. Here too is the fire brigade whose captain refused entry to his own team as his cottage blazed away; the riots when a cemetery was proposed; the earliest chapels built and closed; Ann Pain, who stole a bullock's heart on St. Valentine's Day; Mr Marks, who lost 50 Pounds at Wellington Fair; elderly Maria Strippling, sentenced to seven days' labour for pinching threepennorth of hay; and the 4,703 tramps who came to Wellington in 1865. Transport changed the town, when the turnpikes, canal, railway and finally motorcar came. The first car owner was heavily fined; the first acceptable motor hit the Town Hall. Taverns prospered, and there were 75 at one time or another. Thirteen survive. The greatest change of all came with the Great War - 'our old world has gone forever' said the local 'rag'. That world is recreated (here) - in a fluent, fascinating and fact-packed narrative and some 200 pictures, many of them rare, and most unique to this book." Book is slightly cocked. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top edge, a few small faint indentations on panels, minor rubbing.

MERE ANARCHY., Allen, Woody.
22 Allen, Woody. MERE ANARCHY.
Random House, New York, 2007, first edition.
160 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 9781400066414 "Here, in his first collection since his three hilarious classics 'Getting Even', 'Without Feathers', and 'Side Effects', Woody Allen has managed to write a book that not only a nswers the most profound questions of human existence but is also the perfect size to place under any short table leg to prevent wobbling. 'I awoke Friday, and because the universe is expanding it took me longer than usual to find my robe,' h e e x p l ains in a piece on physics called 'Strung Out'. In other flights of inspirational sanity we are introduced to a cast of characters only Allen could imagine: Jasper Nutmeat, Flanders Mealworm, and the independent film mogul E. Coli Big g s, j u st t o na me a few. Whether he is writing about art, sex, food, or crime ('Pugh has been a policeman as far back as he can remember. His father was a notorious bank robber, and the only way Pugh could get to spend time with him was to a pp reh end h im' ), he is explosively funny. In 'This Nib for Hire,' a Hollywood bigwig comes across an author's book in a little country store and describes it in a way that aptly captures this magnificent volume: 'Actually,' the producer says, 'I 'd n ever se en a bo ok rema indered in the kindling section before'." Minor rubbing on boards. Near Fine/Fine

24 Anderes, Fred & Agranoff, Ann. ICE PALACES.
Toronto Macmillan of Canada 1983 0771598572 / 9780771598579 First Edition Near Fine Very Good
132 pp, oblong (9 1/8" H x 10 3/4" D). Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w photographs, repro-ductions, architectural drawings. "The magical buildings illustrated in this pioneer study of a virtually unknown architectural phenomenon were truly built of ice, and they were said to shimmer with color and fire reminiscent of sapphire, topaz, and opal. In style they recalled medieval castles, Gothic cathed-rals, Russian palaces, and Art Deco fantasies. Many were huge, reaching as high as a 14 -story building and extending as long as a football field, but, of course, there's no physical trace of them. Nevertheless, the authors have discovered dozens of historic photographs, lithographs, postcards, paintings, and drawings of these fabulous but ephemeral constructions, as well as mementoes of the winter activities and sports surrounding their creation. (They) relate the history of ice castle building and examine about thirty in detail. This type of architectural tour de fource had its beginning in 18th-century Russia, when the eccentric Empress Anna Ivanova built an icy honeymoon cottage for an out-of-favor prince. In North America, ice palaces were created as centrepieces for the winter carnivals that sprang up in northern cities in the late 19th century. Between 1883 and 1942, grand castles were built of blocks of ice in the Canadian cities of Montreal, Quebec, and Ottawa, and also in St. Paul, Minnesota, and Leadville, Colorado. Today the leading centers for construction in ice and snow are at the annual winter festivals held in Quebec, Canada, and Sapporo, Japan. (T)he authors - both architects - examine the theory and practice of building with ice (which under certain conditions has the structural properties of concrete), both for practical and fantastic purposes." Book is clean and bright. Dust jacket has light rubbing - mainly on front panel, minor wrinkling at top of spine.

27 Ansell, Mike, Colonel Sir. Foreword By H.R.H. The Prince Philip. SOLDIER ON: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY.
London Peter Davies 1973 First Edition Very Good - Good+ Inscribed By Author
180 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). **Inscribed on half title page: "G_____ A_____ Best wishes Mike Ansell Oct. 14th 1973". B&w plates. "In June, 1940, when Colonel Mike had just been awarded the D.S.O. and was the youngest Commanding Officer in the Army, disaster struck: he was blinded in a hail of bullets at St Valery. The way he has overcome this handicap, and other more heartbreaking losses, is the inspiring theme of this book. For Colonel Mike has never failed to 'soldier on' in the face of adversities that would have broken lesser men. Whether catching salmon on the Torridge in Devon, creating the beautiful garden at his home near Bideford, planning a new show-jumping course with his specially designed magnetic board, attending St Dunstan's reunions or sitting in his study typing this book, to everything he does Colonel Mike bring his own unique brand of enthusiasm and professionalism - just as he did before the war, when, for example, he organised the famous Trick Ride for his regiment, the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards, and show-jumped for England. Chairman of the British Show-Jumping Association and of the British Horse Society for some twenty-five years and now President of the British Equestrian Federation, he has done more than any other single man to make Britain one of the leading equestrian nations in the world, and to stimulate the ever-growing interest in riding as a competitive and leisure sport." Publishers' promotional material laid-in. Scattered tiny foxing marks on top third of both boards and on edges of text bkock, light wear at corners. Dust jacket has bee price-clipped, heavy creases at top corner of rear flap-fold, tiny foxing marks on top inside edge, some light edge wear/wrinkling, small closed tear on front hinge, small repair at top edge - archivally taped.

29 Arnup, John D. MIDDLETON: THE BELOVED JUDGE.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1988 0771007959 First Edition Very Good Very Good
202 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "(T)he story of one of Ontario's and Canada's greatest judges, William Edward Middleton (1860-1948), who served as a justice of the Supreme Court of Ontario for thirty-three years, twenty-two of them as an appellate judge. At a time when a number of Supreme Court justices were belligerent to counsel and irascible toward their brother judges, Mr. Justice Middleton set a high standard of courtesy and civility that has carried on to the present day. Because (he) never sought attention or encouraged controversy, his contributions have been known heretofore only in legal circles. Yet here is a man whose written judgments are still cited fifty, sixty, even seventy years later, the judge who sat on 'the Great Stork Derby' case of the 1930s, and who decided which of the two litigious Kellogg brothers could sell his corn flakes in Canada. In addition, Middleton was a renowned botanist and legal scholar. The prison inmates of his Bible class knew him better and appreciated his exemplary character far more than the average citizen. (This book) is rich with anecdotage and presents important legal cases in a manner the general reader can understand and appreciate." Minor old tape residue at top/bottom edges of free endpapers, small corner crease on page 7, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, small ink mark on bottomm edge of both boards. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, one or two very tiny edge tears, minor rubbing.

32 Ashe, Geoffrey. FROM CAESAR TO ARTHUR.
London Collins 1960 First Edition Good+ Good-
320 p, 8 1/2" H. "(A) study of the life and career of the historical King Arthur in so far as it can be traced through early documents and remains. (The author) begins with the decay of Roman power and its slow disappearance from Britain, while invasion, anarchy and warring small kingdoms take its place. Then comes a reversal of fortune without parallel in the dissolving Empire, when a western Christian military chieftain stems the Saxon tide and imposes a long truce. In this unique recovery, it is suggested, lies a previously unnoticed clue to the whole development of the British monarchy. The kingdom finally created by Alfred the Great and his successors turns out to have been decisively affected by the earlier achievement of Arthur and the failure of the first Saxon attempt at conquest. Piecing together his fragments of history to form the most vivid possible whole, Mr. Ashe explains how the great tradition of Arthur flowed into the Arthurian Legend, and shows how that legend, fantastic and romantic as it is, nevertheless embodies a profound historical insight." Very light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, moderate browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, a few tiny and small edge tears, a few tiny scuffs on spine, minor edge browning, protected in a mylar sleeve.

IN RUPERT'S LAND: MEMOIRS OF WALTER TRAILL., Atwood, Mae, editor. (Walter Traill.)
33 Atwood, Mae, editor. (Walter Traill.) IN RUPERT'S LAND: MEMOIRS OF WALTER TRAILL.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1970 First Edition Very Good Good
232 pp, 8 3/4" H. Map endpapers. "Here is a lively and informative history of Walter J.S. Traill, youngest son of the famous Canadian pioneer settler, Catharine Parr Traill. Born in 1847, (he) left home - near Lakefield in Canada West - at 19 and set out for Prince Rupert's Land as a clerk with the Hudson's Bay Company, and this book is a collection of authentic writings compiled from his letters and journals by his nephew's wife. He tells of the day-to-day life of the Hudson's Bay clerks, of the hardships, the loneliness. The colonists are often hungry, and he recounts occasions when they ate sled dogs to prevent starvation. Traill presents a picture of the Riel rebellion, as he was for a time, a prisoner of Riel in Fort Garry and only released on condition that he left the territory Being a loyal Hudson's Bay man, he is strongly antagonistic to Louis Riel, but the rest of his writing reveals an objectivity and broadmindedness that is astonishing for the Victorian era." A couple of pages with tiny corner crease, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, some rubbing and soiling - mainly on rear panel, a few tiny edge chips and tears, very light browning at edges and on spine.

"At 6 a.m. on 21 April 1940 John, the 9th Duke of Rutland, and one of Britain's wealthiest men, ended his days, virtually alone, lying on a makeshift bed in a dank, cramped suite of rooms in the servants' quarters of his own home, Belvoir Castle. For weeks, as his health deteriorated, his family, his servants - even the King's doctor - had pleaded with him to come out, but he had refused. After his death, his son and heir, Charles, the 10th Duke of Rutland, ordered that the rooms be locked up and they remained untouched for sixty years. What lay behind this extraordinary set of circumstances? (The author) unravels a complex and compelling tale of love, honour and betrayal, played out in the grand salons of Britain's stately homes at the turn of the twentieth century, and on the battlefields of the Western Front." In addition to the melodies and complete French texts of the songs, Dr. Barbeau has included singable interpretations (not literal translations) in English. Of interest to laymen and folklorists alike are his commentaries on each song - where it was recorded, its history, uses, and versions known in France - as well as a list of references and sources for each." Tiny area of wear at top corner of rear board, tiny pen mark/dint at fore-edge of pages 86-90, small soft wrinkle at fore-edge of allpages up to page 10, diagonal line impression from rear pastedown on last few pages. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling, three tiny closed tears with creases, light fading to spine color, tiny scuff on spine, light rubbing and soiling - mainly on rear panel.
