32 Gage, S.R. FORGOTTEN PLACES IN THE NORTH.
Mosaic, (Oakville, Ontario, 2001).
166 pp, 8vo, soft cover. B&w photos. "Across the broad expanse of Canada's North there are few physical reminders of the rich history of the land and its people. (This book) examines three rare cases where heritage structures have withstood the ravages of time and an unforgiving climate. York Factory was the key staging area of the Hudson's Bay Company for over two hundred years. From its construction in 1830, the 'Depot' warehouse held a wealth of trade goods that lured the trappers of the Northwest. Herschel Island, off the north coast of the Yukon, became the unlikely winter home to hundreds of Yankee whalers in the 1890s. The buildings of this abandoned settlement still remain. The Mid-Canada Line was an electronic Cold War bastion that stretched the length of Canada's 55th parallel. This national project stood against American ambition to the south and the Soviet threat from the north." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor rubbing to covers, tiny stain to fore-edge of textblock with slight migration into margin of a few pages, spine flat and uncreased. VG

34 Halberstadt, Hans. MARINE MUSCLE: HORNET AND HARRIER. WINGS NO.5.
London Windrow & Greene 1993 1872004474 / 9781872004471 First Edition Soft Cover Near Fine
96 pp, 10 3/16" H. Profusely illustrated with colour photographs. "The McDonnell Douglas/Northrop F/A-18 Hornet and McDonnell Douglas AV-8B Harrier II provide the 'muscle' of the US Marine Corps' air element. Dedicated to just one mission - supporting the Marine rifleman down there in the dirt, at whatever cost - they form a versatile, hard-hitting, highly motivated element of the Corps' overall ability to project American power overseas. Neither is particularly fast: but each is perfectly suited to its special roles. The Hornet, famous for its agility and accurate delivery of a wide range of ordnance, is the perfect fighter/bomber combination. The remarkable V/STOL Harrier can get airborne within minutes from just about any hard surface in the newly captured beachhead, to put 'a world of hurt' on the enemy's front line. Between them they can clear the skies over the beachhead of enemy aircraft; respond instantly to the call for close air support at the forward edge of battle; and carry out interdiction bombing along the enemy's rear lines. (This book) presents a fascinating close-up look at both these battle-proven aircraft and their missions." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - clean and bright.

Bilingual French/English Introduction / Location of Documents / List of Persons / Captions to Illustrations / Indexes. Main text English only. This volume "deals with the evolution of Canadian policy during the middle years of the war, from the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, until the end of 1943. During those years, attention shifted from working out the bases of Canada's participation, as 'a belligerent second only to Britain as a Commonwealth military power', to an attempt to define this country's place in an Allied war effort dominated by much larger nations. That effort was important not only because Canadians were concerned about the conduct of the war itself but also because precedents were being established which would profoundly affect their interests once peace returned. It was a time of testing Canada's sovereignty and for determining the recognition which the country might expect for its contribution to victory." Chapter headings: Conduct of External Relations; Conduct of War; Post-War Planning; United Nations Organizations and Conferences; Other International Organizations and Conferences; Commonwealth Relations; Relations with the United States; Relations with France; Bilateral Relations; Appendices. Tiny bump at top of front hinge, light shelf soiling on bottom of text block, minor soiling on top of text block.

38 Hind, Henry Youle. Introduction to the new edition by Roy St. George Stubbs. NARRATIVE OF THE CANADIAN RED RIVER EXPLORING EXPEDITION OF 1857 AND OF THE ASSINNIBOINE AND SASKATCHEWAN EXPLORING EXPEDITION OF 1858. TWO VOLUMES IN ONE.
Charles E. Tuttle, Rutland, Vermont, 1971, new edition.
494 pp + 472 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover (bright red cloth with black title block and gold lettering on spine), in dust jacket. ISBN 0804810095 Color plates, b&w engravings, maps (some fold-out) - collated. "As late as 1857, the vast territory of the Canadian northwest was unknown to all but a handful of fur traders. Yet the determination of the Hudson's Bay Company to maintain its enormous fur preserve was being challenged by the persistant advance of settlement. Anticipatin g t h e t e r m ination of the Company's license in 1859 and curious about the suitability of the territory for general settlement, both the Imperial and the Canadian governments commissioned expeditions in 1857 to explore and report on the area. A n I ri sh - bo rn a rm y officer, Captain John Palliser, headed the British expedition; the moving spirit of the Canadian party was Henry Youle Hind. Hind's energy and zeal for the project lead his expedition on a thorough exploration of the R ed Ri ver an d l at er, of th e A ssiniboine and Saskatchewan Rivers as well. First hand observation of the success of even limited farming in these areas convinced Hind that the prairies were capable of absorbing many thousands of settlers and of pro vidi ng t hem wit h a good liv ing. He wrote enthusiastically of the potentialities of western agriculture, envisaging a transportation system, either wagon road or railroad, from Lake of the Woods to the Rockies that would enjoy the advan tag e of bein g fed by an a gric ultur al po pulat ion from one extremity to the other. Substantail parts of this work made their first appearance as parliamentary papers in 1857. Hind's optimistic reports outweighed the less enthusiastic findin gs o f Pal liser and ul tima tely influ enced the Im perial government to refuse the renewal of the Hudson's Bay Company's license two years later. Hind's 'Narrative', factual and objective, yet enlivened by incidents of personal experience, is fo remos t a do cument of ext raord inary visio n and foresig ht and remains today a minor classic." Previous owners small stamp on front pastedown, very light soiling and a few scattered tiny foxing marks on edges of textblock, slight darkening to edges of boar ds. Dus t jacket is pr ice cl ipped, has ve ry light edge w ear, light edge wrinkling, moderate rubbing on rear panel, 1/2" scuff mark at bottom of spine causing color loss. Very Good/Very Good-
