MEN AT ARNHEM., Angus, Tom.
24 Angus, Tom. MEN AT ARNHEM.
Leo Cooper, London, (1977), reprint.
208 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850522153 B&w maps, organization chart. "Tom Angus sets out to apportion no blame, nor does he seek to analyse the reasons for the failure of the operation. His aim is simply to describe w hat it was like to be a 30-year old company commander during those eight days in hell. For obvious reasons, the characters are not all drawn straight from life. The names are changed and he does not specify the units concerned. But the e v e n t s h e describes did happen just where and when and how he describes them; so if this is not a conventional work of military history nor is it by any means fiction. It is a remarkable and intensely moving account of one of those great mi li ta ry t ra ge d ie s w hich only the British seem able to turn into triumphs, and as a book it certainly triumphs over all conventional accounts of that blood-drenched sacrifice that was the Battle of Arnhem. It is also the finest evocation of an inf ant rym an' s w ar to b e published for many years and will become a classic in its field." Previous owners small stamp on front pastedown, very tiny bump to bottom corners of boards. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top of spine, small gh ost stic ker mark on fro nt f lap . VG+/VG

"With its dramatic landscapes and rugged beauty, Alberta's Bow River valley has inspired generations of artists. (This book) brings together a col lection of works by local and visiting artists from 1845 to 2000 that captures the many moods of the river from its source high in the Rocky Mountains down to the city of Calgary and eastward across the open prairie. (The authors) have select e d f r o m a number of Alberta museums and national collections which depict the Bow River and its valley, representing a broad array of historical periods, artistic styles, and points of view. From European topographers and military artists to p ai nt e rs c om missioned by the Canadian Pacific Railway, from the Group of Seven to modernists and abstractionists, these pictures of the Bow valley tell us much about changing attitudes towards nature and the environment as well as the evolution of an a rti sti c c ommunity in western Canada."Inside - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. RED-TAPE AND PIGEON-HOLE GENERALS: ANDREW A. HUMPHREYS IN THE ARMY OF THE POTOMAC., Arner, Frederick B., commentary. (William H. Armstrong.) Foreword by Charles T. Joyce.
26 Arner, Frederick B., commentary. (William H. Armstrong.) Foreword by Charles T. Joyce. RED-TAPE AND PIGEON-HOLE GENERALS: ANDREW A. HUMPHREYS IN THE ARMY OF THE POTOMAC.
Rockbridge, Charlottesville, Virginia, 1999, first edition.
378 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1883522153 B&w photographs, maps, reproductions. "Regarded as anonymously written fiction when it was originally published in 1864, this rollicking story of the way it was in the Union 's Army of the Potomac is a thinly disguised tale of truth. It is, in fact, a scathing attack on the character and military ability of Gen. Andrew Atkinson Humphreys. The author, Lt. Col. William H. Armstrong of the 129th Pennyslvania Voluntee r I n fantry, risked a libel action to send his message, yet he recognized that abuses within the system could not be addressed without first being exposed. The tale also includes a vivid, firsthand description of the brutal history of the 129th a nd th e Tyler Brigade and poignant stories of its men - Frederick B Arner's perceptive and comprehensive commentary identifies the main players and units and taps primary sources that support Armstrong's point of view - A masterpiece of historic sl eut h ing a nd disciplined research, this volume may change the way some historians view General Humphreys." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very minor rubbing on rear panel. Near Fine/Near Fine

Osprey, Oxford, 1998, first edition.
96 pp, 9 3/4" H, soft cover. ISBN 1855328348 Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w with photographs, reproductions, maps/battle plans. " 'If there is no objection, I will take my Division tomorrow and go to Gettysburg.' With these words Major- General Henry Heth set in train the course of events culminating in the titanic clash around the small Pennsylvania town of Gettysburg. On 1 July two Confederate Corps swept towards this strategic crossroads as Federal troops fought a desper a t e d e l aying action. The men of the Army of Northern Virginia were the best in the Confederacy. Under Robert E. Lee they had whipped every Federal force sent against them, and they were confident this time would be no exception. As the firs t at ta c ks s we pt forward full of confidence they were met by a storm of fire. Judging from the determination of their bluecoated adversaries this was going to be no ordinary fight." "(This series) presents the military enthusiast with a new a ng le on th e m ajo r b attlefields of history. Supported by comprehensive organisation diagrams the forces involved are examined unit-by-unit, including the 'tooth' combat elements and the vital 'tail' support troops. The objectives of the operat ion ar e a nal ysed and thi s 'theory' contrasted with the realities of the battle itself." 96 pp, 9 3/4" H. "Chickamauga - an Indian name meaning 'River of Death' - was one of the bloodiest battles of the American Civil War. Fought in densely wooded terrain just south of Chattanooga, this was to be the greatest western-theatre battle of the conflict, a hard-fought victory for the Confederates that halted the advance of Rosecrans' Union Army of the Cumberland into Tennessee." "Each volume (of the Campaign series) begins with an assessment of each commander's campaign strategy, then recounts the progress of the fighting, blow-by-blow. More than 90 illustrations, including maps, charts and colour plates accompany the text, and a series of three-dimensional battle maps mark the critical stages of the campaign. 29 Ashe, Geoffrey. FROM CAESAR TO ARTHUR.
London Collins 1960 First Edition Hard Cover Good+ Good-
320 p, 8 1/2" H. "(A) study of the life and career of the historical King Arthur in so far as it can be traced through early documents and remains. (The author) begins with the decay of Roman power and its slow disappearance from Britain, while invasion, anarchy and warring small kingdoms take its place. Then comes a reversal of fortune without parallel in the dissolving Empire, when a western Christian military chieftain stems the Saxon tide and imposes a long truce. In this unique recovery, it is suggested, lies a previously unnoticed clue to the whole development of the British monarchy. The kingdom finally created by Alfred the Great and his successors turns out to have been decisively affected by the earlier achievement of Arthur and the failure of the first Saxon attempt at conquest. Piecing together his fragments of history to form the most vivid possible whole, Mr. Ashe explains how the great tradition of Arthur flowed into the Arthurian Legend, and shows how that legend, fantastic and romantic as it is, nevertheless embodies a profound historical insight." Very light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, moderate browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, a few tiny and small edge tears, a few tiny scuffs on spine, minor edge browning, protected in a mylar sleeve.

London PRO Publications 1994 1873162138 / 9781873162132 Soft Cover Very Good+
189 pp, 4to (11 5/8" H). Colour frontispiece, b&w illustrations. "For scholars of British diplomacy and international affairs, the records of the Foreign Office are an indispensible source. But the range of information and the sheer size of the records can be daunting to the first time user and to the increasing numbers of genealogists who attempt to trace individuals in the files of the diplomatic and consular correspondence. This book provides an introduction to the records in all their variety and suggests appropriate classes to start with. It also examines the state papers foreign, the records of foreign policy which pre-date the modern Foreign Office records. These are more closely related to the later papers than the dividing date of 1782 would suggest. This book also gives the would-be researcher practical guidance in using the registry systems created by the Foreign Office in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to locate surviving papers today." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - slight waviness to top/bottom of textblock, very light rubbing on rear cover, minor edge wear at corners.
