22 Hopkins, Andrea. THE BOOK OF GUINEVERE, LEGENDARY QUEEN OF CAMELOT.
Prospero 1998 0886653584 / 9780886653583 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
96 pp, 9 1/4" H. Pictorial endpapers, many b&w and colour reproductions, decorations. "The enigma of Guinevere, a beautiful and courageous queen or a disgraced adulteress, has received less attention than the achievements of King Arthur, the adventures of noble Sir Lancelot and other knights, the magic of Merlin, or the sorcery of Morgan Le Fay. A key figure in the life of Camelot, this remarkable woman is seen variously as a scholar, seductress, warrior and gentle beauty by the countless artists and writers who have depicted her. Who, then, was Guinevere? (This) is an elegant anthology of poetry and prose, literature and legend, with commentary by Arthurian scholar Andrea Hopkins, accompanied by beautiful illustrations from medieval manuscript illumination to pre-Raphaelite masterpieces. An enlightening introduction describes the contradictory traditions of Celtic oral sources and the blending of these strands by medieval writers into the complex legend we know know. Guinevere's roles - as educated scribe to the court, hapless victim of circumstances, wise counsellor, devoted wife of King Arthur, and lover of Sir Lancelot - are explored through writings through the centuries by detractors and admirers alike." Very light edge wear, Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, light fading to spine color.

THE GRAIL LEGEND., Jung, Emma & Von Franz, Marie-Louise. Translator: Andrea Dykes.
29 Jung, Emma & Von Franz, Marie-Louise. Translator: Andrea Dykes. THE GRAIL LEGEND.
Boston Sigo Press 1986 093843408X / 9780938434085 Second Edition Soft Cover Very Good
452 pp, 9" H. B&w illustrations. "The Holy Grail and its quest is a legend which has had a powerful impact on our civilization and culture. The Grail itself is an ancient Celtic symbol of plenty as well as a Christian symbol of redemption and eternal life, the chalice which caught the blood of the crucified Christ. The story of the Grail sheds profound light on man's search for the supreme value of life, for that which makes life most meaningful. Writing in a clear and readable style, two leading women of the Jungian school of psychology present this legend as a living myth that is meaningful to modern life. We encounter such universal figures as the Fool (the naive young Perceval), the Wise Old Man (the Hermit Gornemanz), the Virgin Maiden (Blancheflor), the Loathly Damsel, and such important themes as the Waste Land, the Trinity, and the vessel of the Grail. Weaving together narrative and interpretation, the authors show us how the legend reflects not only fundamental human problems but also the dramatic psychic events which form the background of our Christian culture." Interior - one tiny corner crease, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - minor soiling on bottom of text block, tiny dent at top of spine, very faint creases on spine, one tiny corner crease.

30 Katz, Michael B. THE PEOPLE OF HAMILTON, CANADA WEST: FAMILY AND CLASS IN A MID-NINETEENTH-CENTURY CITY.
Cambridge Harvard University Press 1975 0674661257 / 9780674661257 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good-
381 pp, 9 1/2" H. Tables, graphs. "(R)econstructs the social structure, life cycle, and domestic relations within a mid-nineteenth century Canadian city. (Katz's) analysis draws on the records of the entire population found on the manuscript census, assessment rolls, city directories, newspapers, and other sources. (He) has explored the relationships between inequality, ethnicity, sex, mobility, transiency, household structure, and coming-of-age during a period of profound social change. At one level, the book describes in great detail the nature of family and society in a commercial city. Simul-taneously, it uses the patterns uncovered in Hamilton, which the author compares to those other historians have found elsewhere, to speculate about broad questions in social history and social theory. Finally, the book is an exploratory exercise in the application of quantitative techniques to social history; as such its interest lies in its method as well as its substance. The author contents that two themes - structural rigidity and individual transiencey - characterized life in the commercial city. Despite the massive flow of people into and out of the city, its basic structures remained virtually unaltered, thought the identity of its occupants changed dramatically. In part, the history of the family reflected these two themes; but the family had an independent existence as well. For, despite some structural parallells, the family served somewhat different purposes than its modern counterpart, especially the sheltering of young people during a period Katz calls 'semi-autonomy', a phase of the life cycle that virtually has disappeared." Bump and tiny tear at bottom of spine - light wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has heavy creasing and small tear archivally taped at bottom of spine, very light wrinkling at top edge, light rubbing and soiling on rear panel.

University of Iowa Press, Iowa City, 1989.
544 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0877452652 "(The) story of the men who spent their youth designing and building England's first flying-machines: the men who pioneered the British aircraft industry. Some of their airc raft have achieved immortality - the legendary Pup, Camel, Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster. But of the men who designed and built them, men like Frederick Handley Page, Tommy Sopwith, George Holt Thomas and Geoffrey de Havilland, perhaps o n l y R o l ls and Royce are still household names. These pioneers of aviation development began to build their empires during Worl;d War I, although several of them crashed during the bleak period that followed. World War II revived their fortun es , as so me ho w they met the challenge of enormously increased production and helped save England from invasion. They tested the early jets and speedily built the first post-war jet airliner. But already they were making errors which would res ult i n b a nkr upt cie s, forced mergers and foreign takeovers. Peter King describes the knight in all their glamour, skill, idiosyncrasy, greed, flair and desire for power. Quotations from previously unpublished papers, from colleagues and cont empo rar ies, a nd f rom cust omers (governments, the British Air Force, commercial airlines) for the first time describe how wilful they could be, as well as how brilliantly enterprising and entertaining." 356 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "When the Edmonton Oilers won their first Stanley Cup in 1984, Albertans rejoiced. They had waited 91 years for just this moment. When they won it again in 1985, a new era in hockey was born: The Edmonton Era. Just six years after being incorporated into the National Hockey League, the Oilers had won back-to-back Stanley Cups and rewritten half the record book. In these few years they had grown from a cocky, immature team into a championship team with character and charisma. Kevin Lowe describes all of this and more. In particular, he talks about his teammates - the magnificent Mark Messier, the Flying Finns, the unbeatable Grant Fuhr, Boy Wonder Wayne Gretzky and, of course, the controversial Glen Sather. (This) is the complete, dynamic chronicle of the team that Gretzky helped to propel to greatness, told from the point of view of (his) roommate and teammate Kevin Lowe." 98 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated in color. "Since his professinal debut nearly 20 years ago, artist Don Maitz has been giving form to the fantastic in a way that has won him widespread recognition by both his professional peers and an enthusiastic public. Following up on the success of 'First Maitz', this volume is a lavishly produced collection of some of Maitz's most popular works, as well as some never-before-published paintings. Exhibiting a fanatical attention to detail, the paintings apply surrealist technique to surreal situations. Maitz likes to mix modern imagery with medieval icons and his pictures frequently display a keen sense of wit. (He) has designed more than 250 book covers for some of today's leading authors of cutting-edge science fiction, including Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury, Piers Anthony, Stephen King, Raymond E. Feist, C.J. Cherryh, Janny Wurts and Gene Wolfe. His visceral and adventurous visions have also attracted commercial clients for national advertising: Eastman Kodak, NBC, and Captain Morgan Spiced Rum. (He) has received the Silver Medallion from the American Society of Illustrators, the Hugo Award and the Howard Award for Best Artist at the Sixth World Fantasy Convention." 37 Matthews, John. KING ARTHUR AND THE GRAIL QUEST: MYTH AND VISION FROM CELTIC TIMES TO THE PRESENT.
London Brockhampton 1998 1860198635 / 9781860198632 Hard Cover Fine Near Fine Steven Brown.
159 pp, 10" H. B&w and colour illustrations - photographs, reproductions, maps. "Two great narrative themes, which link the sacred and the secular, have been passed down to us from the Dark Ages. These are the stories of the heroic, godlike Arthur and of a mystic object of quest, the Holy Grail. John Matthews has created an easily understood survey of the origins and merging of these epic themes and stories It is a richly woven tapestry of myth and legend, and of love and desire - both sacred and profane. It covers city and temple, knights and monks, and ranges far and wide, from Camelot to Carbonek. In gathering together the strands that make up the stories, the author has examined many of the hundred or so extant texts. He has selected from these - some still untranslated and obscure - to show how the two great themes changed and developed down the centuries as they became inextricably joined. (This book) provides a fascinating survey as well as including five of the traditional stories, retold by the author. In addition, there is a full summary of all sources and an extensive bibliography."

BRASSEY'S BOOK OF THE CRUSADES., Miller, David.
40 Miller, David. BRASSEY'S BOOK OF THE CRUSADES.
Washington, D.C. Brassey's 2001 1574882929 / 9781574882926 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
128 pp, 11 1/4" H. "The crusades, of which there were several, conducted by many forcees from different nations, were ultimately unsuccessful, the last crusaders being forced out of the Holy Land in 1291. However, as this fascinating history shows, they did serve to advance many military concepts. Notable among these were the logistics involved in moving thousands of combined forces across frequently hostile regions; fortifications and siege warfare; and armour and weapons. There were heroes and villians, too - again on both sides - and examples of great generalship, military ineptitude, magnamity, and atrocity. The most notable leaders during these conflicts were Richard I, Lionheart, King of England, and the saracen commander, Saladin. While they never met, each had a justifiable respect for the other. This handsome volume encapsulates all the intriguing contrasts between the combatant forces, outlining the formation of the Christian Military Orders - such as the Knights Hospitallers - and the ferocious saracen armies. It describes the major weapons, such as siege machines, as well as personal arms and armour, and the important battles. Liberally illustrated with maps and diagrams, plus contemporary and other illustrations of the people, places and warfare, (this book) is a highly readable military history of a period and events that have an enduring fascination for military enthusiast and general reader alike." Minor edge wear. Dust jacket has some small areas of very light edge wrinkling.
