THE ARROW., Dow, James.
21 Dow, James. THE ARROW.
Toronto James Lorimer 1979 0888622811 Hard Cover Very Good Good+
160 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "The Arrow (supersonic fighter) appeared on Avro's drawing boards in 1952 and was in the air by 1958. Test flights were a great success, and five aircraft had flown by 1959. Then came the dramatic decision whose rationale was not made public at the time, and which even now seems obscure. The Arrow was cancelled, and everything to do with it, including the planes that had already flown, was broken into scrap. Nothing was to remain. To tell the story of the Arrow, James Dow explores the impressive experience of Canada's aircraft industry, created from virtually nothing during the Second World War by C.D. Howe and recruits from the business world. Avro was put together when the government aircraft companies were sold off at the war's end. Avro's first postwar project was the Jetliner, conceived in 1945 for Air Canada (then TCA). It was very nearly the world's first passenger jet, and was first in the air in August 1949 only days behind Britain's Comet. Avro's military experience came with the CF-100 Canuck fighter, which flew first in 1951. There was even an experimental flying saucer, built for the U.S. armed forces. The Arrow was to be the culmination of this experience and this success." Previous owner's place, date and signature in ink on front free endpaper; some light toning to endpapers and to edges of text block, very tiny bump at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light to moderate rubbing, several small tears with creases at top edge, light edge wear, one small edge chip, protectedin a mylar sleeve.

22 Downey, Bob. V BOMBERS. WARBIRDS ILLUSTRATED NO. 35.
Arms and Armour Press, (London, 1985).
72 pp, large 8vo (9 5/8" H), soft cover. Profusely illustrated with b&w and color photos. "Valiant, Victor, Vulcan - names which conjure up visions of strange and graceful white shapes wheeling in the skies over Farnborough or thundering in groups of four from airfields in the east of England. They are listed here in alphabetical order, for, like the nation which ordered, built and operated them, I cannot decide quite which of them was the best. What is clear, with the hindsight bestowed after nearly thirty years of consistent service in the Royal Air Force, is that all three v-bombers were truly multi-role aircraft, capable of adaptation either in initial design or by subsequent reworking..." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - light edge wear, small sticker pull at top of front cover causing surface paper loss. VG-

33 Granatstein, J.L. CANADA 1957-1967: THE YEARS OF UNCERTAINTY AND INNOVATION. THE CANADIAN CENTENARY SERIES NO. 19.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1986 0771035152 / 9780771035159 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good Signed by Author
375 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, political cartoons. Signed by author on title page. "In the tenth decade of Canada's confederation, the expansive and unifying post-war boom gave way to rapid change and conflicting choices. These were the years of John Diefenbaker and Lester Pearson, years when Canada's culture, economy, and politics took new directions and the foundations of today's political and social realities were laid. Beginning with a survey of the country in 1957, poised to grasp Diefenbaker's grand 'Vision', the author vividly describes how the Progressive Conservative promise won the nation - and later could not be fulfilled. In these critical years Canada joined NORAD and scrapped the Avro Arrow jet fighter; the Diefenbaker Cabinet tore itself apart over the nuclear arms question. At the same time, the economic crisis of the early sixties gave the Liberals a much-needed political weapon as the government faced soaring budget deficits, a declining dollar, and a severe recession. Politics mirrored public feelings in the mid-1960s as governments federal and provincial addressed new kinds of problems. Unification of the armed forces, medicare, and bilingualism in the public services, especially in the context of the growing political and cultural ferment in Quebec, proved divisive as well as innovative." Minor wrinkle at bottom of spine. Dust jackat has very small tear and creases at top of spine - archivally taped, some very light edge wear/wrinkling with one tiny tear archivally taped.

MIKOYAN MiG-21. OSPREY AIR COMBAT., Gunston, Bill.
34 Gunston, Bill. MIKOYAN MiG-21. OSPREY AIR COMBAT.
London Osprey 1986 0850456525 / 9780850456523 First Edition Soft Cover Very Good -
200 pp, 10 9/16" H. "Today the MiG-21 is beginning to become a trifle long in the tooth. But the latest version is still in mass-production in India, while almost the first version is not only being manufactured in China but is a new contender in the world market for fighters! Meanwhile, every second or two, MiG-21s thunder aloft wearing the colours of more air forces than any other warplane before or since. Opinions of it vary. 'Fabulous', said an Egyptian. ' A supersonic sports plane' said an Indian (but of a very early version). 'Formidable in the air combat role' said a Frenchman. 'Formidable, simply because of its numbers' said an American general (who called it the Fishbed, the NATO code name). (The author) homes in on the most numerous jet aircraft in history. For the first time we have not just a description of a modern Soviet warplane but a thoughful account of its background (with a wry glance at the confusion its emergence caused in the West), discussion of why it came out as it did, and in particular a detailed look at its many curious design features, developed through more than 20 variants. Even today many Western descriptions have got it wrong. This epoch-making 200-page book will put many misconceptions right. Illustrated with over 160 black and white photographs (many previously unpublished) and 12 photographs in full colour." Light edge wear at top of rear hinge, two soft corner creases on front cover one small and one large, light wear at corners of front cover, light rubbing causing dullness to covers.

Pacifica Military History, Pacifica, California, 1993.

"(The author) brings fresh first-person accounts from thirty-nine U.S. Army Air Corps fighter aces who blasted their way across the skies of North Afr ica, the Mediterranean, and northern and southern Europe in the great crusade against Hitler's vaunted Luftwaffe and the other Axis air forces. Coupled with a clear, concise historical overview of America's brilliant air war against the Axis i n E u r ope and North Africa, Hammel's detailed interviews bring out the most thrilling in-the-cockpit experiences of some of our country's best pilots. Climb aboard a P-38 Lightning as Maj. Bill Leverette fights America's highest-scoring single p er s on al a ir battle against the Luftwaffe. And get into the cockpit of a P-47 Thunderbolt as 15-victory ace Capt. Don Bryan scores his dream kill by outwitting the pilot of a far speedier German jet in the closing days of the war in Europe.. ." ON TARGET., Holmes, John. (pseud. of Raymond Souster)
36 Holmes, John. (pseud. of Raymond Souster) ON TARGET.
Village Book Store Press, Toronto, 1972, first edition.
248 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0919621015 "...until now there has been no fictional account (and very little of anything else) about that superb air force within an air force, the R.C.A.F.'s Six Bomber Group of R.A.F. Bomb er Command. Now....Canadians can get a glimpse of life in a typical Canadian heavy bomber squadron based in Yorkshire, England, as it was in the later turbulent days of the Second World War. The time is March, 1945. For Bill Sutcliffe, ai r b o m b e r from Toronto, and for Walt, Dave, Max and the others of his crew, it seems as though the war will end before they have a chance to prove themselves in action. But suddenly, almost before they know it, they are flying deep into Germa ny ag ai ns t th e enemy. An enemy retreating on the ground, his air force largely destroyed, but still undefeated and fighting deperately on. They soon learn the terrors of murderous flak concentrations, and have thrust at them a new formidable adv e rsa ry as th e f ir st jet fighters rise into the skies over Germany to do battle with them. How the Canadian airmen survive or die, how they spend their few precious, off-duty hours, is really the subject of this novel. But this book cannot avo id bei ng a p art hym n o f praise to that largely unsung work-horse of Bomber Command, the Handley Page Halifax bomber. To "N" for "Nan" and thousands of others like her, Canadian airmen like these in the story owe a debt which has never be en tr uly paid - unti l 'O n Tar get' ." Light browning to edges of text block, light fading to edges of boards and on spine, very light edge wear, previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown, paperclip mark on free front endpaper, faint cigare tte od or. Dust jac ket h as li ght br ownin g at edges and on spine, very light edge wrinkling. Very Good-/Very Good-

London Leo Cooper 1993 0850523168 / 9780850523164 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
164 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs. "Sir Ronald Ivelaw-Chapman was a remarkable man who had the good fortune to be born in an era when his particular talents were allowed to develop to the full. Just old enough to take part in the earliest days of aerial combat in the First World War, he was in uniform until well after the jet engine had taken command of the skies. His son John, who has edited his memoirs, makes clear that Sir Ronald was a typical Edwardian English Gentleman. This, he explains, is vital to the understanding of the man. The moral precepts of the Edwardian era remained with Sir Ronald throughout his life, and if some of them seem stiff and outdated in these more relaxed days, they certainly sustained him throughout a long and adventurous career. The book not only covers the most vital years in the development of the RAF in which Sir Ronald played a significant part but is also packed with drama at high level. Not many Englishmen, let alone future Air Marshals, were ever under sentence of death at the orders of Sir Winston Churchill himself. Sir Ronald has been well served by his editor. His son is never blinded by filial respect and, as he served in the Royal Air Force himself, he is familiar with the Service background. He is also qualified to explain what it was that made his father and the military men of that generation a unique band of Happy Warriors whose loyalty and service to the British Crown is already a fading memory." Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, light rubbing, two tiny scuffs on spine.
