427 pp, 8vo (9 1/4" H). "Through war, depression, and social upheaval, the first half of the twentieth century was a period of unprecedented turbulence in Canada. In this lively and perhaps contentious survey, (the authors) explore the political and economic forces that shaped this era of change. Beginning at the turn of the century, they consider the status of Canada in the empire and the world, the burgeoning growth of its economy, and the development of social and labour problems, up to the eruption of war in 1914. They discuss the political currents running through Canada during two wars, the interwar economic boom and depression, and the plans for post-war reconstruction, and assess the impact of these and other events on Canada's political, economic, social, and cultural institutions." Illustrated with political cartoons.

BELLEVILLE: A POPULAR HISTORY., Boyce, Gerry.
23 Boyce, Gerry. BELLEVILLE: A POPULAR HISTORY.
Toronto Natural Heritage / Dundurn 2008 1550028634 / 9781550028638 First Edition Soft Cover Fine
310 pp, square large 8vo (9" x 9"). B&w photographs, reproductions, maps. "(A) treasure trove of stories - 'glorious and not-so-glorious' - embodying the history of the city of Belleville (Ontario) and its beautiful surroundings. Gerry Boyce, the dean of the area's historians, has done a masterful job of pulling together the best of Belleville's storied past, episode by episode, decade by decade: here one learns about the Native roots of the place, its debatable 'discovery' by Champlain, its hot-headed pre-Confederation politics, its involvement in Spiritualism in the 1850s and the spread of prostitution in the Victorian 1870s. Moving forward from the days of Susanna Moodie and Mackenzie Bowell, it provides an entertaining and probing stroll through the past 110 years, reminding readers of such national events as the sensational 1959 victory by the Belleville MacFarlands over the Russians at the World Amateur Hockey Championship in Prague; and then, less well known, the financially crippling news of secret payments made to the players. Gerry Boyce (reminds) us that our history, be it local or national, is much more lively and intriguing than we often realize." Michael Peterman . FIGHTER SQUADRON AT GUADALCANAL., Brand, Max.
27 Brand, Max. FIGHTER SQUADRON AT GUADALCANAL.
Naval Institute Press, Annapolis, 1996.
231 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1557500886 B&w photographs, maps. "(A)fter more than fifty years and a string of fortunate coincidences, Brand's stirring account of the 212th Marine Fighter Squadron's operations at Guadalc anal in 1942 has been set in print. Once of the very first examples of oral history, this treasure trove of personal and historical detail was the result of hundreds of hours of interviews with the pilots and ground crew of the 212th, as wel l a s w i th Marine infantrymen and Navy personnel, conducted soon after the events took place. Stories of thrilling, yet deadly, air-to-air combat are recounted in the words of the men who were there - who also share their innermost thoughts abo ut fe ar , c ou rage, and their resolve to defeat the Japanese. Lost when Brand was killed while covering the Italian campaign for Harper's magazine, this unique and important find wuld never have appeared in print except for a meeting of squadro n v e ter ans a nd the author's daughter. Graced with the poetic spirit and descriptive powers of his well-loved novels, Brand's account deserves a place among the classics of World War II literature for both its literary merit and its rich legac y of p erso nal ins igh ts i nto one of the pivotal campaigns of the Pacific War. In addition to being a revealing and informative historical bonanza, this work serves as a dramatic, inspirational testament to the men of an outstanding squadron wh o tri ump hed u nder dur ess, and to their legendary squadron commander, Lt. Col. Harold (Joe) Bauer, who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor." Dust jacket has light rubbing. Very Good+/Very Good+

HOW THE IRISH SAVED CIVILIZATION: THE UNTOLD STORY OF IRELAND'S HEROIC ROLE FROM THE FALL OF ROME TO THE RISE OF MEDIEVAL EUROPE., Cahill, Thomas.

246 pp, 8 1/2" H. Colour pictorial endpapers, b&w illustrations. "From the fall of Rome to the rise of Charlemagne - the 'dark ages' - learning, scholarship, and culture disappeared from the European continent. The great heritage of western civilization - from the Greek and Roman classics to Jewish and Christian works - would have been utterly lost were it not for the holy men and women of unconquered Ireland. In this delightful and illuminating look into a crucial but little-known 'hinge' of history, Thomas Cahill takes us to the 'island of saints and scholars', the Ireland of St. Patrick and the Book of Kells. Here, far from the barbarian despoliation of the continent, monks and scribes laboriously, lovingly, even playfully preserved the west's written treasury. With the return of stability in Europe, these Irish scholars were instrumental in spreading learning. Thus the Irish not only were conservators of civilization, but became shapers of the medieval mind, putting their unique stamp on western culture. (T)his pivotal era is brought back to life, its personages portrayed in all their seemingly contemporary humanity, its issues simply and compellingly spelled out." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, slight fading to colour at top/bottom edges of spine/hinge cloth. Dust jacket has minor edge wear and minor rubbing, very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine, three soft vertical creases - one on each panel and on each flap.

206 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs, reproductions, maps. "New Brunswick's enormous timber trade attracted the first wave of Scots in the late 18th century. As economic conditions in Scotland worsened, the flow of emigrants increased, creating distinctive Scottish communities along the province's major timber bays and river frontages. While Scots relied on the timber trade for economic sustenance, their religion offered another form of support, sustaining them in a spiritual and cultural sense. These two themes, the axe and the bible, underpin their story. Using wide-ranging documentary sources, includ-ing passenger lists and newspaper shipping reports, (this book) traces the progress of Scottish colon- ization and its ramifications for the province's early development. Who were these Scots? What factors caused them to select their various locations? What problems did they face? Were they successful pioneers? Why was the Scottish Church so important to them? In tracing the process of emigration, (the author) offers new insights on where Scots settled, their overall impact and the cultural legacy they left behind. 311 pp, 7 5/8" H. B&w illustrations, fold-out map at rear."The incredible journey of William Fitzwilliam, Viscount Milton, and his long-suffering companion, Dr. Walter Butler Cheadle, over the uncharted Yellowhead route in 1862-63 was a highly improbable, miraculously successful expedition, well-seasoned with comic relief though it very nearly ended several times in tragedy. Dr. Cheadle's 'Journal' first appeared in 1931, sixty-six years after publication of 'The North-West Passage by Land', a bestselling account of the expedition supposedly co-authored by the young Lord Milton and his companion. Besides confirming suspicions that the first book was in fact Cheadle's, the 'Journal' is more candid about the two adventurer's motives ('we were a mere party of pleasure'), and a much more precise record of life and travel in the Northwest during the latter days of the fur trade era. Cheadle acknowledges the heavy debt owed by all of the early explorers to the plains Indians, who passed on to the first white men their sophistication in the ways of the wilderness. He also records the gradual demoralization of the native people under the impact of European culture. His own Assiniboine guide was an invaluable support to Cheadle, who had to cope not only with Lord Milton's constant petulance and frequent illness, but with the most obnoxious hitchhiker ever to cross the Rockies." On or two small faint areas of browning on edges of text block. Dust jacket has light edge wear and tiny tears/creases - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds (archivally taped), slight fading to spine color, faint small writing impressions on front panel.
