341 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w photographs. "One of the most compelling figures ever to lace on a pair of skates, Carl Brewer was a gifted skater and stickhandler, renowned for his ability to control the pace of a game and to goad opponents into costly errors. His talents made him an NHL all-star and one of the cornerstones of a Toronto Maple Leaf dynasty. But he was also a loner playing a team game, a free spirit in an era when players were expected not to make waves. Teammates and management alike wrote him off as an eccentric, an enigma. At what should have been the peak of his career, he abandoned the game, embarking on a lifelong search for meaning in his life. Along the way he met Susan Foster, and together they would discover the purpose. (This is) the story of how Carl and Susan successfully battled the hockey establishment over the issue of player pensions. Together they uncovered fraud, corruption and betrayal of trust, ultimately helping bring down the powerful Alan Eagleson." Previous owner's place, date and signature on free front endpaper. THE BATTLE OF BROOKLYN 1776., Gallagher, John J. Foreword by James Dingeman.
28 Gallagher, John J. Foreword by James Dingeman. THE BATTLE OF BROOKLYN 1776.
Sarpedon, New York, 1995.
206 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 188511902X B&w photographs, reproductions, maps/battle plans. "It is not often realized that in Brooklyn, New York, for a few tense hours in 1776, the fate of the entire United States hung by a thread. An American defeat, the Battle of Brooklyn has been all but neglected in our collective memory for what it earned with the blood of its participants - honored status as one of history's great battles. Besides being the largest cl ash of the Revolution, in terms of both troops and casualties, the action at Brooklyn (sometimes called 'The Battle of Long Island') brought the fledgling American republic to the brink of disaster. At the height of the fighting, only the va l i a n t s acrifice of one regiment - the Marylanders - staved off a catastrophe. The British army, meanwhile, executed a three-pronged surprise assault with admirable professionalism. The wilds of Brooklyn became a killing ground for the Britis h an d He ss i an troops who were able to begin the war convinced the colonials would not be able to stand against their onslaught of bullets and steel. While a drama of rare instensity on its surface, the Battle of Brooklyn also holds a larger si gn ifi ca nce : t he Ki ng's men did not invade Brooklyn to face other kings' men; they were sent to fight a population. Rules of engagement were uncertain and passions for and against the rebellion ran high. When the smoke cleared at Brooklyn, i n 1 776, th e mo dern ag e of 'democratic warfare' had begun....The Battle of Brooklyn was a victory for the British Empire. But contained within the triumph was a demonstration of the type of American resolve and courage that would eventually r esul t in inde pende nce f or t he Un ited States." Faint cigarette odor. Dust jacket has minor rubbing, tiny tear at top of spine, crease at top edge of rear flap, barcode label on inside of rear panel. Very Good+/Very Good

The speaker is Bane the Bastard, a Wolfshead living outside the law. Born of treachery, his name a curse, he grew up among the warriors of the Rigante. They valued his skills in war, but they feared the violence in his heart. Seventeen years after his birth, self-exile takes Bane to a rats' nest: the Great City of Stone. Here, where gladiators kill for a living, the Crimson Priests have created a reign of terror by breeding enough malice and hatred to last a hundred lifetimes. Yet here, too, the beleagured Tree Cultists, led by the mysterious Veiled Lady, endeavour to practise their philosophy of love. By now seeking the ultimate vengeance, Bane the Bastard prepares to join battle to destroy the Myth of Stone. The days of blood are drawing near, and this son of an undefeated warrior king - Connovar, the fabled Demonblane - must fight to save his world." 3. Ravenheart - 507 pp, 2002, ISBN 0552146757. In a perilous land, her hopes are pinned on two men: Jaim Grymauch, the giant Rigante fighter, a man haunted by his failure to save the friend he loved from betrayal, and Kaelin Ring, a youth whose deadly talents will earn his the enmity of all Varlish. One will become the Ravenheart, an outlaw leader whose daring exploits will inspire the Rigante. The other will forge a legend and light the fires of rebellion." 211 pp, 9 1/4" H. Inscribed on title page: "Best Wishes Rob / Paul Henderson". B&w photographs. "(Paul Henderson) tells the story of the first Canada-Soviet Union series that kept Canadians riveted to their radios and televisions. Although the 1972 series was the highlight of his career, (he) has a lot more to tell. As a Detroit Red Wing, he played with such greats as Gordie Howe, Alex Delvecchio, and Ted Lindsay and experienced the heartache of being on the losing side in two Stanley Cup finals. Dealt to the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1968, he found himself on the ice with the team that had won the Leaf's last Cup the previous year, skating alongside Dave Keon, Tim Horton, George Armstrong, and Ron Ellis. Participating in one of the game's golden eras, Henderson had the privilege of locking horns with the likes of Phil Esposito, Bobby Orr, and Bobby Hull. And, like Hull, he, too, jumped to the World Hockey Association, where he witnessed the arrival of Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, and a new breed of superstar. Finally, Henderson describes the difficult transition he and all professional athletes must face when retirement inevitably comes." Previous owner's place and signature on front free endpaper, scattered tiny faint foxing marks on top of text block, minor wrinkling at top of spine, tiny dent on bottom edge of front board. O.P.P.: THE HISTORY OF THE ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE FORCE., Higley, Dahn D.
33 Higley, Dahn D. O.P.P.: THE HISTORY OF THE ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE FORCE.
Toronto Queen's Printer 1984 0774389648 / 9780774389648 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
668 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "The OPP came into existence (in 1909) with a total strength of fifty-one men, of whom forty-four were constables deployed across the vast province. By the end of World War I in 1918, only twenty-six constables were still serving with the force, but returning veterans were sought for enlistment with the provincials and the force grew, assuming every-increasing responsibilities for policing the province. Liquor law enforcement during the rumrunning days of the 1920s, and the creation of a highway patrol in 1930 played major parts in the evolution of the provincial police. The story of the OPP includes tales of murder, sabotage, corruption, and political influences. There were relief expeditions to the north in the wake of devastating forest fires, and confrontations with hoboes, harvesters, and loafers. Violent crimes, jail-breaks, war services, and industrial disputes all had to be contended with, and not a few members of the provincial police were killed in the performance of their duties over the years. 'Hepburn's Private Army' and 'Drew's Gestapo' gave rise to much criticism of the provincials, and embarrassing Royal Commissions did little to enhance the image or the morale of Ontario's finest. Despite the challenges to its continued existence, the OPP has emerged today as one of the finest, best equipped, and most brilliantly led police forces in the world." Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top edge..

34 Holmes, John W. THE SHAPING OF PEACE: CANADA AND THE SEARCH FOR WORLD ORDER, 1943-1957. VOLUME 2.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1982 0802055419 / 9780802055415 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
443 pp, 9 1/4" H. "The establishment of the United Nations system at the conclusion of the Second World War was followed by a period of disillusion in the late 40s about the prospects of world order. With the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950 there came a regrouping of forces and revised calculations of what was possible. The first volume of 'The Shaping of Peace' described Canadian attitudes and policies towards international institutions as the Second World War ended. This volume is concerned with the developments in the decade after the war, with the changing Canadian concepts as they were shaped by events and challenges. Although principal attention is paid to the organs of the United Nations, other themes such as the establishment of NATO, the progress of the new Commonwealth, and the changing concepts of the North American relationship are analysed as essential elements in the Canadian search for equilibrium." Minor wrinkling at top of front hinge. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling, very light browning.

35 Howe, Ellic. THE BLACK GAME: BRITISH SUBVERSIVE OPERATIONS AGAINST THE GERMANS DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR.
London Michael Joseph 1982 0718117182 / 9780718117184 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good No Jacket
276 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), black covers with gold lettering on spine. B&w photographs, reproductions. "This book is mainly concerned with certain British propaganda activities during the Second World War which were classified as 'black'. The BBC's broadcasts to Germany and enemy-occupied Europe, also leaflets bearing the imprint of HM Government and dropped by the RAF, were all 'white'. Black operations, however, never indicated their British origin. Various clandestine broadcasting stations, all of them outside the control of the BBC, sought, sometimes with surprising success, to give the impression that they were actually operating inside Germany or elsewhere in Europe. Great pains were taken to disguise the fact that a strangely variegated range of black printed matter had not, in spite of its convincing appearance and, where necessary, bogus imprints, been produced in Germany, France, Belgium, etc. Indeed, it was all manufactered in London. Little of it was disseminated by the RAF since other and far more covert methods were performed." Faint erased pencil marks and small ghost sticker mark on free front endpaper, faint discoloration on top of textblock, tiny stain on fore-edge of textblock, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine.
