IN FOR A PENNY, IN FOR A POUND: THE ADVENTURES AND MISADVENTURE OF A WIRELESS OPERATOR IN BOMBER COMMAND., Hewer, Howard. Foreword by Group Captain Kenneth McDonald. Introduction by Flight Lieutenant William H. Dixon.
21 Hewer, Howard. Foreword by Group Captain Kenneth McDonald. Introduction by Flight Lieutenant William H. Dixon. IN FOR A PENNY, IN FOR A POUND: THE ADVENTURES AND MISADVENTURE OF A WIRELESS OPERATOR IN BOMBER COMMAND.
Stoddart, Toronto, 2000.
272 pp, large 8vo (9 5/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 077373273X B&w photographs, maps. "In 1940, 19-year-old Howard Hewer dreamed of being the next Billy Bishop, of piloting Spitfires or Hurricanes over Europe. His dream was shattered when he was selected instead for a career as a wireless operator. But his thirst for adventure would certainly be satisfied. He was not to be a pilot, but he would play a vital role in air operations in World War II over Europe and the Mediterrane an. Hewer's life in Bomber Command was never dull, and almost always bittersweet. During training, he fell out of a Fairey Battle, and held on by only one foot high over Lake Erie. In London, he survived a run-in with the infamous 'Piccad i l l y C o m mandos', then dug for victims of an air raid in the rubble of a dance hall. But Hewer found life in the belly of Wellington, or 'Wimpy', bombers the most hazardous of all. He and his crew of 218 and 148 Squadrons flew important nigh t op er at i on s ov er Germany and North Africa, dropping their deadly payloads while dodging enemy flak. All the while, Hewer was busy at the radio controls identifying his Wimpy's position and detecting false codes from Axis operators, who were al way s o n t he pr ow l t o lure unsuspecting Allied bombers into landing on enemy airfields. On perhaps his bravest mission of the war, as a driver for the RAF in North Africa, Hewer drove deep behind enemy lines, where he exchanged fire with I tal ian troo ps. An othe r t ime, in Suez, he became bored while on medical leave, and joined on as a wireless operator on another operation. Soon after takeoff, the plane took flak and crash landed on the desert floor. Hewer was trapped, his le gs c rush ed ag ains t hi s rad io, the e ngines of the plane threatening to explode. At times comical, at others tragic, Howard Hewer's stirring story will leave a lasting imprint on the memory of its readers." Dust jacket has minor rubbing. Nea r Fin e/Nea r Fine

CAPTAIN BLIGH & MR CHRISTIAN: THE MEN AND THE MUTINY., Hough, Richard.
23 Hough, Richard. CAPTAIN BLIGH & MR CHRISTIAN: THE MEN AND THE MUTINY.
E.P. Dutton, New York, 1973, first edition.
320 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers, b&w plates, drawings, maps. "The main outline of the mutiny is widely known and usually seen in strong blacks and whites. It is only through the author's painstaking scholars hip and reinterpretation of the major characters that the classical quality of this saga takes on a new meaning. Mr. Hough's research took him on prolongued journeys from Christian's birthplace to the other side of the world where Christian' s d e a t h and Bligh's miraculous open-boat escape occurred. For the first time Christian is seen as a troubled and guilty man, proud but soft beneath the skin. Bligh, who had been Captain Cook's brilliant navigator and inadvertent assassin, em er g es a s a co urageous but uncertain leader out of touch with the needs of his men....(This book) throws new light on the relations between Bligh and Christian, on Bligh's voyages to the Pacific, and his incredible journey to New South Wales." STRIKE FROM THE SEA: A SURVEY OF BRITISH NAVAL AIR OPERATIONS, 1909-69., Jackson, Robert.
25 Jackson, Robert. STRIKE FROM THE SEA: A SURVEY OF BRITISH NAVAL AIR OPERATIONS, 1909-69.
Arthur Barker, London, 1970.
234 pp, 8vo 8 3/4" H, hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. "On 19 July 1918, six Sopwith Camels took off from the flight deck of the aircraft carrier 'Furious' off the Schleswig coast. Their mission - to bomb the German Zeppelin sheds at Tondern. It was the first time in history that a force of aircraft had been launched against an enemy objective from an aircraft carrier: the first ever strike from the sea. In the half century that has elapsed since that historic day, the Royal Navy's airmen have carved out a reputation of courage and skill that is second to none. This is their story - a story of men and courage, of crews, aircraft and ships often hurled into battle against hopeless odds. The author has covered every major operation involving the Fleet Air Arm and its predecessor, the RNAS, including Korea, Suez, Malaya and forgotten 'backyard wars' such as the British naval operations against the Bolsheviks in the Baltic in 1919, when the Navy's airmen bombed the Red Fleet in Kronstadt. The Second World War is covered in detail, from the hunt for the 'Graf Spee' to the final assault on Japan and Kamikaze attacks on the carriers of the British Pacific Fleet." Water mark on top corner of text block with some small areas of dye migration into top corner of a few pages, minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has very light edge wear/wrinkling, light browning on spine, two small edge tears with old tape. Good+/Good+

26 Jenson, Latham B. Foreword by W.A.B. Douglas. TIN HATS, OILSKINS & SEABOOTS: A NAVAL JOURNEY, 1938-1945.
Robin Brass Studio, Toronto, 2000, reprint.
312 pp, oblong 8vo (8" H x 9" D), soft cover. ISBN 1896941141 B&w drawings by the author/artist. "As a boy growing up on the Prairies in the Depression, (the author) dreamed of going to sea, became a sea cadet at HMS Undaunted in Calgary, and in 1938 joined the Royal Canadian Navy as an officer cadet, training with the Royal Navy in Britain until 1941. His wartime service began on HMS Renown in the South Atlantic, searching for the Graf Spee, and off Norway engaging the battleships Scharnh orst and Gneisenau. He lost all his possessions when Renown was damaged by shellfire. He served on HMS Matabele and HMS Hood, leaving that ship weeks before she was sunk with all hands in battle with the Bismarck. Returning to Canada in la t e 1 9 4 1 , he was appointed to HMCS Ottawa, a destroyer on convoy escort duty in the North Atlantic. A year later she was sunk with great loss of life in a battle with German submarines. Jenson was among the lucky ones plucked from the Atlant ic b y a B ri ti sh corvette. He joined HMCS Niagara as executive officer, and in late 1943 briefly commanded the corvette Long Branch before going on to the destroyer Algonquin as executive officer, taking part in raids on German ships, includi ng the T irp itz , a nd being one of the ships to open fire on the shore defences in the invasion of Normandy. Algonquin completed the war raiding German shipping and escorting Allied convoys to Murmansk. The book is illustrated with L.B. Jenson' s l umin ous lin e dr awin gs, as well as sketches and diagrams illustrating uniforms, insignia and so on. His book is a valuable record not only of how ships fought the battles of the Atlantic, but of life on board, where men had to live under d iffi cult cond ition s for week s on end - all seen through the eyes of an energetic and engaging young officer." "On the 20th August 1959 the prototype Victor Mark 2 bomber disappeared during flight trials over the Irish Sea. The captain of a coa ster bound from the Mersey to the Thames noticed a splash some eight miles away, when off the Pembrokeshire coast, reported it to Ilfracombe Radio Station and made a brief entry in the ship's log. From then on Operation Victor Search was und e r w a y . Controlled by H.M.S. Harrier it involved more than 40 ships and 4,000 men and women and was officially described as 'probably the greatest salvage operation of its type ever undertaken'. Those at sea toiled for long and arduous hours , of t en i n th e most atrocious weather, throughout a wild winter and much of the following year. When the final signal, 'Return to harbour - search complete' went out, the trawlers, backed by salvage vessels, had carried out more than 12,000 ha ul s a nd ne arl y 600 ,000 pieced of the missing Victor had been recovered. This represented 70 per cent of the aircraft and gave the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough, enough information for them to be 'reasonably satisfied' that they kn ew the cau se o f th e acci dent." Barrie & Jenkins, London, 1989, reprint.
240 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0712620036 "1942: The Mediterranean Operation Stonehenge gets under way - a convoy laden with desperately needed fuel, food and ammunition for the besieged island of Malta sets sail. C aptain Robert Thurston commands the cruiser HMS Marathon, one of the escort vessels, on this Malta run. Thurston is a career officer with a record of conspicuous gallantry under fire, from Jutland to the North Atlantic convoys. But he is al s o a m a n under stress - in the last three years he has seen one ship go to the bottom, leaving pitifully few survivors; he has seen his closest friends and shipmates killed and maimed; he has carried the impossibly heavy burden of responsibilit y fo r h i s me n's welfare in the bloody destruction of war at sea. And soon another cause for concern is added to his worries - Marathon is crippled by enemy action and forced to limp towards Alexandria, a constant target for attack by sea and a ir , v ul ner ab le to the weather and to the enemy alike. Men and machines are stretched to their limit - but the most deadly threat to Thurston's own life and career is yet to be faced. (This) marks the debut of a superb storyteller in A.E. La ngs ford , a nov eli st to i nvite comparison with Patrick O'Brian and Nicholas Monsarrat." Very light browning to top of edge block. 286 pp, 8 3/4" H. Military fiction. "During the Second World War, the losses of ships and men in Allied convoys rose to such proportions that sinkings often far outpaced replacements. As the toll of ships mounted, the escort carrier was born. She had the hull of an uncompleted merchant ship, but had a flight deck and upperworks of a conventional carrier. These makeshift vessels, single-screwed and with only wooden flight-decks to protect them from dive-bombers, performed miracles in every theatre of war. This is the story of one of them, HMS Growler, seen through the eyes of Tim Rowan, a naval pilot - a story which takes Growler through the long drawn out misery of Russian convoys to the terrifying onslaught of Japanese Kamikaze in the Indian Ocean."
