Dutton, New York, 2002, first edition.
400 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 052596640 B&w photographs, reproductions. "(T)he incredible story of an extraordinary group of American artists, designers, and engineering wizards who became America's unsung heroes o f the Second World War....The men of the 23d Headquarters Special Troops were recruited to become phantom warriors in a ghost army to help win the Battle of Europe. They fought in more campaigns, from D-Day to the Rhine River, with more All i e d a r m i es, than any other unit in the European Theater of Operations - yet not even their fellow American soldiers were aware of their presence. After Douglas Fairbanks Jr., USNR, completed a tour of England and its special forces installat io ns , t he H ol ly wood star convinced the Navy brass to train an elite unit that eventually evolved into the only Army force of its kind - a top-secret band of unknown heroes. These elite soldiers counted among their number designer Bill Blass and pa in te r E lls wor th Kelly, and were inspired by Hilton Howell Railey, the 'P.T. Barnum of Deception'. The Special Troops' mission was twofold: to deceive the German army into believing that the Allies possessed more troops and materiel tha n th ey a ctu all y di d an d, e ven more heroically, to draw enemy fire on their position to allow other units to advance free of lethal resistance. Through the art of camouflage, sonic deception, and illusion this extraordinary troops of brave, ingen ious men save d cou ntles s Ame rica n lives - while sometimes losing their own. From the use of inflatable rubber tanks and howitzers to elaborate sound effects, fake radio transmissions, special effects artillery fire, and other elements of stage craft , th ese s hadow soldie rs put thei r lives on the line for their brother soldiers and for their country - only to disappear from history and memory." 28 Gray, Edward. MANCHESTER SHIP CANAL. SUTTON'S PHOTOGRAPHIC HISTORY OF TRANSPORT SERIES.
Stroud, Gloucestershire Sutton 1997 0750914599 / 9780750914598 Soft Cover Very Good+
126 pp, 9 9/16" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "The building of the Manchester Ship Canal was hailed as the greatest engineering achievement of Victorian times. The dissatisfaction of Manchester merchants with high railway rates and excessive port dues charged on imports and exports passing through Liverpool led to a movement to excavate a waterway as wide and as deep as the Suez Canal, so that ocean-going steamships would be able to load and discharge in the heartland of the south-east Lancashire industrial area. The opening of the canal in 1894 dramatically reduced transport costs for industrialists and transformed an inland city into a major port. This history of its construction and operation is divided into themes. A selection of over 200 photographs covers the whole 36-mile length of the canal, from the Mersey Estuary, through Ellesmere Port and Runcorn, to the terminal docks in Salford. Included are sections on the construction period 1887-94, the early operating practices, major shipping companies, tug-boats, canal railways, special features, and the centenary. The vast majority of illustrations are previously unpublished photographs, many from official sources, charting the progress and development of the canal since its inception. The final chapter bring the story up to date with current plans as the canal moves into its second century of operation. This book will be of interest to local historians, industrial archaeologists, waterway enthusiasts, and ship-lovers everywhere." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - light waviness to book, minor rubbing.

CHIEF ENGINEER: LIFE OF A NATION BUILDER - SANFORD FLEMING., Green, Lorne.
29 Green, Lorne. CHIEF ENGINEER: LIFE OF A NATION BUILDER - SANFORD FLEMING.
Dundurn, Toronto, 1993.
191 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1550021958 B&w photographs. "(T)he story of one of the most creative, adventurous, and yet too-often overlooked giants of the Industrial Age - Canada's Sandford Fleming. His influence spanned the North American continent and beyond. As chief engineer of the Intercolonial and Canadian Pacific railways, he shaped and steered the greatest engineering challenge of his day: the laying of the ribbons of railway steel that bound together a fledgling country. He can be credited as well with the telegraph cables that began to criss-cross the globe. Few are aware that it was Fleming who gave us the system of universal time. He also designed the first Canadian adhesive postage stamp, which was issued in 1851. Sandford Fleming's triumphs are all the greater considering the natural and human adversities obstructing every step of his way. Jealousies, back-stabbing, pork-barrel politics, and bureaucratic ineptitude were as intrinsic to mega-projects then as they are now. Fleming's life story constitutes a compelling and universal drama." Previous owner's name/date in ink on free front endpaper. Dust jacket has corner crease on front flap. Very Good+/Very Good +

THE STORY OF CANADIAN ROADS., Guillet, Edwin C.
30 Guillet, Edwin C. THE STORY OF CANADIAN ROADS.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1968 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
246 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions, maps, drawings. "From portage trails snaking their way through the wilderness to superhighways carrying the raw materials and produce of an industrial nation, Canada's roads have had a romantic but long-neglected history. The problems which Canada has faced in seeking to connect two oceans by road would have been formidable even in a land more densely populated. Early builders found their way blocked by forest and swamp, rivers, rocks, vast areas of grassland, mountains, and muskeg. Their gradual success is recounted from the woodland trail cleared by Champlain in Acadia on through the early construction by corvee in New France; the Temiscouta Trail between the Atlantic Provinces and the Canadas; the infamous corduroy roads and bridges which jolted passengers unmercifully and lamed their horses; the plank roads, Canada's first contribution to road-building science; the cart tracks cut into the virgin prairies by Metis buffalo hunters; the Cariboo Road, build through sheer canyons and over mountain passes to the gold fields fo the Upper Fraser; and the vehicles which travelled these routes - the wonderul assortment of sleighs, caleches, buckboards, Red River carts, wagons, and stage-coaches of the nineteenth century. Then came the automobile, and with it an unprecedented personal mobility. Today Canada's roads are one of her principal resources. The Trans-Canada Highway, a dream for most of a century, has forged a new tie of asphalt and concrete, unifying the country." Dust jacket has very light edge wear, tiny dent on front hinge.

THE UNKNOWN NAVY: CANADA'S WORLD WAR II MERCHANT NAVY., Halford, Robert G.

St Catharines, Ontario Vanwell 1995 1551250160 / 9781551250168 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good
272 pp, 10" H. B&w photographs. "Compared to the well-published achievements of the Navy, Army and Air Force, an ocean of silence surrounds the long-gone Canadian Merchant Navy. And yet, Canada operated the wartime world's fourth largest Merchant Navy, almost all of it built in Canadian shipyards. Robert Halford provides an in-depth look at the Merchant Navy from its glorious beginnings to its unceremonious dissolution. During wartime, the merchant seamen were the heroes of the 1939-1945 war, the fourth arm of the Services. By 1948 they had undergone a quick image change, transformed from heroes to anonymous troublemakers hindering the shipping industry. 'The Unknown Navy' endeavours to throw light on the Merchant Navy's important contribution to the Allied cause during World War II." Dust jacket has a tiny scuff/dent on the front panel.
